Dear parish family,
1 Sunday of Lent C
We are now ushered anew into the holy season of Lent. Our spiritual exercises of prayer, fasting and almsgiving can
be helpful as we consider those things that really matter.
This Sunday’s Gospel presents us with an account of the first “Lent,” when we see Jesus in the desert. His
forty days of fasting and prayer present us with a model of faithfulness as opposed to the faithlessness of Israel during
its forty years in the desert. He is the totally committed Son, whose adherence to the Father’s will is absolute.
The temptations that Christ receives help us to see where our own vulnerabilities are. He gives us an example
to fortify us in our own spiritual struggles.
Jesus’ answers to all the temptations revolve around his complete dedication to God. Perhaps we could look
at the individual temptations as symptomatic for different areas of struggle that afflict us all.
“Turn these stones to bread.” Material concerns are in the forefront of many people’s daily lives. After all, if
someone isn’t putting “bread on the table,” hunger will become a real and present danger. But Jesus’ refusal to turn
stones into bread points to authentic human priorities. If we wish to live as Christ did, we must realize that we do not
“live on bread alone.” While our faith provides us with no shortcuts for alleviating material needs, it does keep them from
taking the first place in our lives. If we feed our souls on the word of God and, above all, the Bread of Life, we will ward
off that hunger that is far more dangerous than the physical: spiritual emptiness.
The second temptation is to power. Pride is an enemy that wins many battles over us, but not Christ. His total
love for the Father precludes any rebellion against his will in favor of himself. Our desire for control fans the flames of
our pride and has us grasping for more and more. But Jesus teaches us that our greatest power lies in our submission
to God. It is easy to feel the power of Christ when we give God the place he deserves.
Finally, atop the temple, Jesus refuses to put on a spectacular show of his power. We thrive on celebrity and
vanity. Many of our actions, good ones included, can be contaminated with our desire to be noticed. The more we can
shift the focus instead on ourselves but rather more on Christ, then the more we will be able to live the spirit of Lent.
The ashes that were traced on our foreheads last Wednesday reminded us that we are just dust without God in us. God
must come first!
Blessings to you and have a good week.
Fr. Tony
Querida familia parroquial,
nuestra sumisión a Dios.
Padre Tony

Sunday Morning Bible Study with Deacon Stan & Tracy
Avallone will follow the CCE schedule. Classes this weekend.
The program they use is called “Bringing Faith
Home” (Scheduled @ 8:45am & 11:15am every Sunday).
New Class Starting Today
“A Biblical Walk Through the Mass”
Sun. Feb. 14, 5:15pm & Wed. Feb. 17, 9:00am
In this sturdy, we will walk through the main parts of the
Mass—from the opening Sign of the Cross to the
concluding “Thanks be to God” - and consider then in
light of their scriptural background. Along the way, we will
discover many beautiful spiritual treasures. For the
prayers and rituals of the Mass, when understood
biblically, offer much inspiration, encouragement, and
practical help for our lives as Christians/ As we will see,
the prayers of the Mass challenge us to examine our
consciences, repent of our sins, and experience God’s
loving mercy. They also remind us of God’s presence
with us amid our fears, trials, and sufferings. They can
inspire us to live marriages, family lives, and friendships
with greater love and summon us to entrust more of our
lives to Jesus. Most of all, this study will help us
encounter Our Lord more deeply in the liturgy itself. By
understanding the meaning of what we say and do in the
Mass, we will be better prepared to give ourselves to
Jesus in every prayer and gesture in the liturgy.

Garland of Mercy...
In this Jubilee Year, we are asked to open our eyes
and hearts to see how God is working in our lives
and to more actively spread His mercy out to others. We are creating a Garland of Mercy with our
teen group to bear witness to our efforts to help others.
For the entire year, we are asking each week
when you do works of mercy, to write down one or
more works on the strips of paper in the ends of the
pews. Please put them into the collection basket so
that we offer up, not just our treasure to the Lord,
but our time and talent in a visible way.
Red Strips are for The Corporal Works of Mercy:
feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, visiting the
sick or imprisoned.
White Strips are for The Spiritual Works of Mercy:
Counseling the doubtful, bearing wrongs patiently,
forgiving offences willingly and praying for the living
and the dead.
Gold Ones are for the acts of mercy which we
received from others.
I know that all of you are part of spreading God’s
mercy out into the world. Please take the time to
become more conscious of it and take credit for it
here before the Lord.

Human Dignity
Human dignity is something that can’t be
taken away. Catholic Social Teaching
states that each and every person has
value, are worthy of great respect and must
be free from slavery, manipulation and
exploitation.
“Catholic social teaching believes that human
beings, created in the image and likeness of
God (Genesis 1:26-27), have by their very
existence an inherent value, worth, and
distinction”
Daniel Groody “Globalization, Spirituality

“Dignity of the Human Person”
“How can it be that it is not a news item when
an elderly homeless person dies of exposure,
