Holy Days of Obligation
Questions often arise
concerning Holy Days of
Obligation in the Church.
People will come into the
confessional agonizing over
whether or not they have missed a Holy Day of
Obligation since the last time they came to the
sacrament! Holy Days are really quite simple to
understand. I hope to help out the faithful with a
few reminders.

our Varsity (7th-8th Grade) girls, who won the City
Championship for the 3rd year in a row!

It’s a F-A-C-T: SHJ School has it all!
Faith-Academics-Character-Tradition
T stands for TRADITION —
Sacred Heart of Jesus School is proud of longstanding
traditions that engage students, teachers and parents.
Consistent with tenets of the Catholic faith, first-rate
academic offerings and personal character-building,
traditions at SHJ touch all aspects of student life.
Sports: Mention Sacred Heart of Jesus School
around Boulder and you’ll hear stories about SHJ
sports dating from the 1950s. Renowned far and wide,
our school’s athletic program teaches students to play
fair, respect all participants, win and lose graciously,
build skills at all ability levels and develop a lifetime
interest in physical activity. It has also helped several
graduates earn college athletic scholarships.
Basketball, baseball and volleyball have been played
since the get-go. Softball and track were added over
the years and two years ago cross country joined the
competitive sports program. Students in grades 3
through 8 may participate; there is no fee. A hallmark
of SHJ sports: No Tryouts. Every student who wants to
participate is on a team.
One tradition is the No Slam Basketball Tournament,
now in its 29th year as a fundraiser for SHJ School.
Alumni and friends of the school make up teams for
the 3-day tournament -- March 18, 19 & 20 this year.
Players, spectators and volunteers are welcome.

Student Activities: In-school and extra-curricular
activities are for every student. Opportunities include
choirs, art, field trips near and far, science fairs, food
drives twice a year, yearbook, homework club, holiday
programs, assisting at Mass as Altar Servers and
volunteering at SHJ and in Boulder.
Student Council: Not all traditions are old. Now in
its 3rd year, the Student Council is making a positive
impact on the school community. Promoting school
spirit and student leadership, improving student
relations, providing a forum for student expression and
planning special events or projects are some of the
goals. Council members are expected to maintain a
high standard of personal conduct, practice good
citizenship and demonstrate positive examples of
behavior through their words and actions.

FIESTAS DE PRECEPTO

Las preguntas surgen a menudo en relación con fiestas de guardar en la iglesia. La gente va a
entrar en el confesionario agónica sobre si han perdido ó no, un día de precepto desde la última vez que
vinieron al sacramento! Días Santos son realmente muy sencillo de entender. Espero poder ayudar a los
fieles a cabo con algunos recordatorios. En primer lugar, aquí están las fiestas de guardar reconocidos por
la Iglesia de América. Una nota: los Consejos de cada obispo en varios países establece los Días Santos
de su país. En otras palabras, es diferente en Canadá y México desde los Estados Unidos.
1. TODOS LOS DOMINGOS - Cada domingo es un día de precepto.
2. NAVIDAD - 25 de diciembre como es un día móvil es un día de precepto.
3. SOLEMNIDAD DE SANTA MARIA - Fiesta Principal de María es también un día móvil
y un día de precepto. Se observa el 1 de enero.
4. ASUNCIÓN DE LA VIRGEN - Se celebra el 15 de agosto.
5. DIA DE TODOS LOS SANTOS- Se celebra el 1 de noviembre (Fieles Difuntos el 2 de
noviembre no es un día de precepto)
6. INMACULADA CONCEPCIÓN - Se celebra el 8 de diciembre.
Si la fiesta que cae en domingo es también un Día Santo (por ejemplo Pascua, Pentecostés, Corpus
Christi, etc.), y se celebra como la misa dominical. Observe también que la fiesta de la Ascensión no está
en la lista. En 1998, el 80% del país (todos excepto Nueva Inglaterra y Nueva York ) trasladaron la
ascensión desde el jueves hasta el domingo siguiente.
Además, hace unos 15 años, los Obispos de los Estados Unidos decretaron que si un día de
precepto (específicamente Asunción, Solemnidad de Santa María y Todos los Santos) cae sábado ó un
lunes, se dispensa para ese año. Esto es debido a la apretada agenda y complicados horarios de las Misas,
en muchas parroquias para el domingo. Si una fiesta cae en lunes y se celebra una misa ese día la fiesta es
celebrada, pero la obligación de asistir los fieles a misa, se dispensa. La Fiesta de la Inmaculada
Concepción el 8 de diciembre no se dispensa en los Estados Unidos porque se trata de la fiesta "patronal"
de nuestro país.
En la actualidad, casi todos los días en el calendario de la Iglesia es una fiesta: la fiesta de un santo
o de un mártir, etc. Sin embargo, ellos no son obligatorias. Sin embargo, esos días especiales de precepto
se dejan de lado para darnos la oportunidad de crecer en nuestra fe, para aprender más, y conectar
nuestras vidas a Cristo y sus santos de una manera especial. En esto, creo que la palabra "obligación"
siempre ha sido demasiado limitante. Un término mejor es la oportunidad ó privilegio. Espero que esto
ayude a todos a recordar y celebrar!

años que vengo a buscar fruto en esta higuera, y no lo encuentro; córtala; ¿para qué va a cansar la tierra?"
Pero él le respondió: "Señor, déjala por este año todavía y mientras tanto cavaré a su alrededor y echaré
abono, por si da fruto en adelante; y si no da, la cortas."»
