We have started our beginning of year assessments and determining
what students have learned and where they still need help. Teachers
have many subjects that they teach and focus on during the day, but I
wanted to focus a little on reading for this letter.
Waco ISD is committed to training teachers in reading. Many of our
teachers attended reading academies during the summer as well as
attended more reading training the week before students came back.
It is our goal to work to help all students to read on grade level. We
know that all students do not learn the same or at the same rate
which is also why we use small group instruction in the classroom to
help reach students at whatever level they are at.
In addition, we are going to be utilizing a program called Leveled
Literacy Intervention (LLI) in many of our grades during an

intervention time to help progress our students from their current
levels. The program help students with learning to sound out words
(phonics) as well as helping them with their comprehension or
understanding what they are reading.
One of the programs for reading that we use at Alta Vista and across
WISD is called iStation. Students have the opportunity to work on this
during the school day on computers as well as they can work on it at
home.

A great way that you can encourage your child to read is to read with
them, ask them about their reading and also model reading in your
home. It can be magazines, books, letters or any other things that you
read around the house or when you are out. This helps show students
how we use reading through-out our lives.

Hemos comenzado nuestras evaluaciones del principio de año y
determinando lo que los estudiantes han aprendido y donde todavía
necesitan ayuda. Los profesores tienen muchos sujetos que enseñan y
se concentran durante el día, pero quise concentrarme un poco en la
lectura para esta carta.
Waco ISD está dedicado a entrenar a las maestras en la lectura.
Muchos de nuestras maestras asistieron a academias de lectura
durante el verano así como asistieron a más entrenamiento de lectura
la semana antes de que los estudiantes volvieran. Es nuestro objetivo
de trabajar para ayudar a todos los estudiantes a leer en el nivel de
estudios. Sabemos que todos los estudiantes no aprenden lo mismo
o a la misma velocidad que otros estudiantes, por eso utilizamos un
grupo pequeño de instrucción en el salon para ayudar a alcanzar a los
estudiantes en cualquier nivel.

Además, vamos a estar utilizando un programa llamado intervención
de alfabetización nivelado (LLI) en muchos de nuestros grados
durante un tiempo de intervención para ayudar a avanzar nuestros
estudiantes de los niveles actuales. El programa ayuda a los
estudiantes aprender a sonar hacia fuera las palabras (fonética), así
como ayudándoles con su comprensión o comprensión de lo que
están leyendo.

Destination Imagination teams will be forming soon. Destination
Imagination is a competition that helps students improve creative
thinking, critical thinking, and collaborative problem solving.
Students work in teams to solve different challenges and compete in a
regional tournament in March. Destination Imagination is open to
students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Teams will work after
school to complete their challenges, and parents are encouraged to
volunteer also! If you are interested in your student participating,
please contact Assistant Principal Lindsey Helton.
Cub Scouts-Free to all Alta Vista Boys in grades 1st-5th grade
Cub Scouts do fun things with other kids! They get to wear a cool
uniform, go places, and see things. They play all kinds of sports and
build things, like race cars and bird houses. Since its beginning, the
Cub Scout program has been a fun and educational experience

concerned with values. Besides providing a positive place where boys
can enjoy safe, wholesome activities, Cub Scouting focuses on
building character, improving physical fitness, teaching practical skills,
and developing a spirit of community service.

Super Science
Science can be hard work, but it is also lots of fun. Fifth grade students
will be tested on the state of Texas STAAR test in science along with
math and reading in May. Fifth graders at Alta Vista Elementary have
been busy already conducting experiments in science. Recently, Ms.
Spark’s class conducted an experiment to see if the temperature of
the water affected how quickly a Skittle dissolved. Ms. Barker’s class is
currently trying to grow rock crystals from different solutions. Check
out the school website frequently for more pictures of students

Vista

Pronto se formará equipos de destino imaginación. Destination
Imagination es un concurso que ayuda a los estudiantes a mejorar el
pensamiento creativo, pensamiento crítico y resolución colaborativa
de problemas. Los estudiantes trabajan en equipos para resolver los
diferentes desafíos y competir en un torneo regional en marzo.
Destination Imagination está abierto a estudiantes de kinder a quinto
grado. Equipos trabajarán después de la escuela para completar sus
retos, y animamos a los padres para ser voluntario también! Si usted

Cub Scouts hacen cosas divertidas
con los niños! Tienen que llevar un
uniforme, ir a varios lugares y ver
diferentes cosas. Tienen todo tipos
de deportes y construyen cosas,
como coches de carreras y jaulas.
Desde sus inicios, el programa de
Cub Scouts ha sido una experiencia
divertida, educativa y de valores.
Además de proporcionar un lugar positivo donde los niños pueden
disfrutar actividades seguros y saludables, Cub Scout se centra en
edificar el carácter, mejorar el estado físico, enseñar habilidades
prácticas, y desarrollar un espíritu de servicio a la comunidad.

Ciencia Súper
La ciencia puede ser trabajo difícil, pero también es muy divertido.
Los estudiantes de quinto grado se pondrán a prueba en el estado de

mayo. Alumnos de quinto grado de la escuela primaria Alta Vista han
estado ocupados realizando experimentos en Ciencias.
Recientemente, la clase de la Sra. Spark realizó un experimento para
ver si la temperatura del agua afecta la rapidez en cual un dulce de
Skittles se disuelve. La clase de la Sra. Barker trata actualmente de

First Grade News
First grade are busy little bees learning about poetry as well as setting
and characters in reading. Students are also learning about nouns
and learning to write simple sentences. For reading, you can help your
child by helping them to read 30 minutes daily, making sure they
know their letters and sounds and practice their sight words.

In math, students are learning about number bonds. Number bonds is
a strategy that students use to create and break apart numbers. This
number bond represents one combination of numbers that add up to
10. Number bonds are great ways to help kids understand the
concept of addition and subtraction.

Noticias de Primer Grado
Los estudiantes de primer grado estan ocupados como las pequeñas
