Spain has been busy during the recession, for example, continuing to improving the fantastic road
network. Not only that, since January 2012 Spain has put in 56 new Aires and doubled the number
of LPG Autogas stations. The Portuguese motorhome club CAS has provided us with
comprehensive details about 10 new Aires. In this edition we have moved motorway service areas
with motorhome Service Points from the main listings to a list at the rear totalling 14 Spanish and
five Portuguese areas. Also at the rear of this guide is a list of open-all-year campsites totalling 90
in Spain and 21 in Portugal.

The majority of Aires featured in this edition were inspected during 2012 or 2013 by Meli and Chris,
the editors of this guide and directors of Vicarious Books. They drove all over Spain in 2013
inspecting new Aires or those that had closed, moved, or changed in some way. The remainder of
the Aires were inspected in 2012. Research, updates and customer submissions confirmed that the
information gained in 2012 was still correct, making this guide the most up-to-date, comprehensive
and accurate of its kind.

During the winter months, the majority of motorhome visitors hug the Mediterranean coast and
some adventurers make it as far as the Algarve. Inevitably, the Aires are busy and normally charge
for parking and servicing. The demand for motorhome parking has seen the development of
commercial Aires that resemble simple campsites and many now have a campsite licence. This new
breed of motorhome-centric mini sites have toilet blocks, laundries and a few have plunge pools.
Perhaps the most exciting development has happened along the Atlantic coast west of San
Sebastián where there are several new Aires, some of which are beachside. We recommend that
you visit this area when it is too hot to venture south.
Readers of All the Aires France may remember ‘Operation Evasion’, our attempt to persuade
motorhomers off the beaten trail. The situation is much the same in Spain and Portugal in that Aires
that are conveniently located near to transitory routes are busy. The main difference is that the more
remote Aires are underused and may look a little abandoned, however we were frequently
surprised, when parking overnight, to be joined by Spanish motorhomers between 8-11pm.

Surely there are no motorhomers that have not heard about break-ins at motorway rest areas. Just
in case you think it’s safe to park amongst the trucks or near the fuel station, don’t because Spanish
traffic police on the AP7 confirmed in 2008 and 2012 that motorhomes, trucks and cars were
frequently being broken into on that motorway. In addition, they believed it was a national problem
throughout the motorway network.

What are Aires and what does Aire
mean?

The English translation of ‘Aire’ is ‘area’. Aires are
commonly marked with a sign displaying a
motorhome emptying wastewater. Facilities differ
significantly but normally include a Service Point
for water collection and disposal of waste fluids.
Often there is no instruction about overnight
parking, but it is assumed that 48hrs parking is
tolerated because this is the normal duration
unless local signs or regulations are posted.

Law forbids caravans and tents from using the
municipal Aires in this guide. The law permits
motorhome users to park, cook, eat and sleep
within the confines of their vehicle. This law
actually enabled Aires to develop in the first
place. The law does not permit camping
activities at municipal Aires, such as winding
out awnings or putting out tables and chairs.
Many commercial Aires now have campsite
licenses and camping is allowed. Please check
the rules at commercial Aires when you arrive.

Motorhoming is increasing in Spain and Portugal and many new Aires have opened. Some act as
a control measure, but many more were paid for by the local community in the hope that extra
tourism would help to keep the local shops, restaurants or fuel stations open. Over the past ten
years motorhomes have become much bigger, typically occupying 50 per cent more space. Bear
this in mind when you park during siesta in a sleepy town square or in an empty Aire, because you
are unlikely to remain alone. When parking somewhere for free you should at least try to spend what
you are saving in camping fees. We would all like to see the Aires network continue to grow and this
will happen if motorhomers are perceived as valuable visitors.

Large motorhomes (RVs) >7.5m: Many Aires have been designed to accommodate
motorhomes up to 7m long. The highlighted coach symbols 8 identify Aires where the
inspectors believe it should be possible for motorhomes over 7.5m to access the parking. For
guidance the Pilote motorhomes in some pictures (and on cover) are 6 meters long. In many cases,
parking large motorhomes is only possible when there are few or no other motorhomes. Remember
to put your responsible tourist hat on when you are making parking decisions. During busy periods
Service Point access may not be possible.

Directions: The directions are written to assist you with map navigation. As far as is practical, the
simplest route, that is free of height and weight restrictions, has been selected. Where possible, you
should follow signs and be aware of any obstacles or diversions.

GPS navigation: The GPS coordinates provided in this guide were taken onsite and it should be
possible to drive to the spot where they were taken. This does not mean to say that your navigator
will get you there. Check the directions against your printed map and look at the suggested route
on your navigator.
