Draped in the magic of a Mexican town, 1 Hidalgo
Park (Av. Juárez and Lázaro Cárdenas) is located in the
heart of Tecate. Every day, this park, the city’s social hub,
welcomes locals and visitors alike. They come to rest on

One of the most pleasant ways to visit Tecate is aboard the 3

locomotive from the twentieth century. The tour leaves from
Campo, California in the United States, runs once or twice
a month and lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. The final
stop is the Tecate Brewery, where passengers are received

Tomando la carretera de cuota hacia Mexicali, al este
de Tecate se hallan escenarios donde la naturaleza y la
historia han dejado una impronta de valor patrimonial.
El sitio arqueológico y museo Campo Alaska (Tel. 01
(686) 557 1647, km. 60, Mi-D 10:00 a 16:00 hrs.),
construido en 1916, que fuera casa de gobierno,
cuartel militar y escuela, es un interesante espacio
que exhibe fotografías históricas de la región. Al
tiempo que El Vallecito (Tel. 01 (686) 552 3591, km.
72, Mi-D 8:00 a 17:00 hrs.) le ofrece un paseo entre
pinturas rupestres de hasta 1,500 años de antigüedad.
La más famosa de ellas es “El Diablito”, mágicamente
iluminada cada solsticio de invierno (21 y 22 de
diciembre). Unos minutos más adelante, la escabrosa
cuesta de La Rumorosa recreará sus sentidos con un
paisaje pétreo, posiblemente más fácil de encontrar en
el planeta Marte que en la Tierra.
Taking the tollway towards Mexicali, just east of Tecate, you
will come upon incredible landscapes where nature and
history have left us with a valuable legacy. The archeological
site and Campo Alaska Museum (Tel. 01 (686) 557
1647, at kilometer marker 60; Tues. – Sun. from 10 am
to 4 pm), constructed in 1916, was once a government
building, military barracks and a school. It now serves as
an interesting museum that exhibits historic photographs
from the region. The El Vallecito (Tel. 01 (686) 552 3591,
at kilometer marker 72; Wed. – Sun. from 8 am to 5 pm)
offers visitors a tour among cave paintings, some of which
are up to 1,500 years old. The most famous painting is El
Diablito, which is magically illuminated during the winter
solstice (December 21 and 22) every year. Just a few
minutes away, the rocky hills of La Rumorosa will delight
your senses with their stone-filled landscape, a sight more
often seen on Mars than on Earth.

La ardua labor de los sacerdotes jesuitas, franciscanos y dominicos
que entre los siglos XVII y XIX se lanzaron a la evangelización de
Baja California, perdura en los vetustos muros misionales de piedra y
adobe, aún esparcidos entre la yerma tierra del desierto. La razón de
fundar estos asentamientos fue la de colonizar los nuevos territorios
descubiertos por la Corona Española, a la vez de integrar a los
indígenas, por medio del catecismo y la enseñanza del trabajo de la
tierra, al nuevo sistema religioso y económico.
Courageous Jesuit, Franciscan and Dominican priests took on the task
of evangelizing Baja California between the seventeenth and nineteenth
centuries. Reminders of their heroic efforts can still be seen in the stone and
adobe walls of historic missions dotting the expansive deserts of the state. These
denominations of the Christian faith set out to colonize the new territories
discovered by the Spanish Crown. At the same time, they sought to introduce
the indigenous inhabitants to new religious and economic systems by teaching
the catechism and agricultural techniques to properly cultivate the land.

que enlazaba el extremo sur de la península con el Valle de Napa,
en el actual Estado de California, EUA, los establecimientos de las
misiones fueron claves para la expansión del imperio español. Hoy
en día, numerosos poblados, sitios de pinturas rupestres y museos de
historia se unen a la ruta que conforman estos invaluables patrimonios
culturales de Baja California.
Located in the center of the ancient Camino Real de Las Californias that
stretched from the extreme southern tip of the peninsula to Napa Valley in
present-day California in the United States, these missionary establishments
proved essential in the expansion of the Spanish Empire. Today, numerous
towns, resplendent with cave paintings and history museums, join together
along this route to showcase the valuable relics of the cultural heritage of Baja
California.
En la zona se instituyeron un total de 18 misiones: 4 de ellas jesuitas,
1 franciscana y 13 dominicas. Las más antiguas y al mismo tiempo
las mejor conservadas son las jesuitas 17 San Francisco de Borja
Adac (1762-1823) y 18 Santa Gertrudis (1752-1822), ubicadas en
la parte más meridional de Baja California. La primera se encuentra

llegar a Santa Gertrudis es necesario seguir el camino de terracería que va de
Guerrero Negro a El Arco, y luego proseguir 36 km al noroeste. En cualquiera
de las dos, las mejores portadas del arte misional le estarán esperando.
Por su historia y por encontrarse a 600 metros de un importante sitio de
pinturas rupestres, la misión franciscana de 14 San Fernando de Velicatá
(1769-1818) es otro sitio imprescindible. Se ubica a 57 km de El Rosario,
por la Carretera Federal 1; después del rancho El Progreso, continúe 8.5 km
al oeste. Entre las misiones dominicas más importantes están la de 7 San
Vicente Ferrer (1780-1834), que fuera la mayor de todas, localizada 90
km al sur de Ensenada por la Carretera Federal 1; y la de 2 San Miguel
Arcángel de la Frontera (1775-1839), a 55 km al sur de Rosarito por la
Carretera Federal 1. Esta última se ubicó en el límite histórico de la Alta y la
Baja California, establecido en 1773 por franciscanos y dominicos.

northwest. To arrive at Santa Gertrudis, you need to take the dirt road that goes
from Guerrero Negro to El Arco and then continue 36 kilometers (22 miles) towards
the northwest. At either site, fascinating works of missionary art await you.
For its historic legacy and nearness --just 600 meters (1,969 feet)-- to an important
area of cave paintings, the Franciscan mission of 14 San Fernando de Velicatá
(1769-1818) is another must-see. It is located 57 kilometers (35 miles) from El Rosario
along Federal Highway One. Head towards El Progreso Ranch and continue 8.5
kilometers (5.3 miles) west. Among the most important Dominican missions is the
7 San Vicente Ferrer (1780-1834), once the head mission, located 90 kilometers
(56 miles) south of Ensenada along Federal Highway One. Also noteworthy is the
2 San Miguel Arcángel de la Frontera (1775-1839), found 55 kilometers (34
miles) south of Rosarito along Federal Highway One. This mission, also Dominican,
was located at the historic limit of Upper and Lower Baja California, a boundary
established in 1773 by the Franciscans and Dominicans.

Surrounded by fertile valleys carved out of the desert by the Colorado River, the
capital of Baja California blooms like a young and promising city, one that is said to

Just across the border from the United States of America,
Mexicali shares many of its characteristics with its California
neighbor, the city of Calexico. There are even some people
that claim that Calexico, smaller and with a large Mexican
population, is actually considered another neighborhood
of the capital of Baja California. If you decide to visit
in the summer, take care as the valley of Mexicali can
register temperatures reaching up to 50°C (122°F). The
heat, however, is no match for a great hotel with all the
amenities and a refreshing Clamato Cocktail (traditionally
made with tomato and clam juices).

Independencia y Calz. Anáhuac) es el corazón de las

la línea fronteriza, en el centro de la ciudad, el barrio chino
de 2 La Chinesca alegra las calles con sus pintorescos
