New Year Reflection
A spiritual exercise
As the New Year approaches, it’s a great
time to take stock of the past year and set
goals for the next. Here’s a spiritual
exercise to that end. (You will need one
large candle and one small one.)
Begin by lighting the large candle, which
represents Jesus, the light of the world.
Read and think about these verses from
the Bible:
“I [Jesus] am the light of the world. He
who follows Me shall not walk in
darkness, but have the light of life.”1
“You will light my lamp; the Lord my
God will enlighten my darkness.”2
Light the small candle, which represents
you.
Take a few minutes to reflect on the past
year. Take into consideration these three
areas of your life: your work or studies,
your home life and relationships with
family and friends, and your personal life,
which includes your physical, mental, and
spiritual well being. What in the past year,
in each of those areas, are you most
thankful for? Don’t limit yourself to only
one or two things in each area. Thank God
for them. You may want to jot them down
for future reference.
Then take a few more minutes to reflect
on the coming year. In terms of those
three areas of your life, what are your
prayers or aspirations for the coming
year? Write those things down, either as a
prayer or in point form, so you will have
them to refer to as the year progresses and
be reminded to thank God as He answers
your prayers (and for your next New Year
reflection).
With a few simple modifications, this
exercise can also be done with family or
friends. (You will need one small candle
for each participant.)
Light the large candle, read the Bible
verses aloud, and briefly discuss them.
Take a few minutes for everyone to think
about and write down the things they are
most thankful for from the past year, then
a few more minutes for everyone to
formulate their prayer for the coming
year. (Or with advance notice, everyone
could prepare their list ahead of time and
take as much time for reflection as they
like.)
Then, as you go around your circle, each
person lights their small candle and reads
or explains to the others what they are
most thankful for in the past year and
what their prayer is for the new one.
1 John 8:12
2 Psalm18:28
A CHANCE TO WELCOME
THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN
AWAY
Have you heard of the massive outreach
to Catholics who have drifted away from
the Church that our
Diocese is about
to undertake?
It’s called
CATHOLICS COME
HOME.
Beginning in the middle
of December, television
stations in our area will be broadcasting
commercials about the
Catholic Church encouraging those who
have fallen away to come back home.
There are over 20 million Catholics who
no longer practice the faith or do so
sporadically. This is in addition to the 70
million Catholics who are more active. In
fact, if you take the number of fallen away
Catholics, it adds up to the second largest
religion in the United States (practicing
Catholics being the first). Amazing isn’t it
that so many have fallen away. We need
to invite them back.
This is just the first step in a program
sponsored by our Diocese in conjunction
with the Archdiocese of Chicago and
the Diocese of Joliet. Millions will see
these commercials over a month and a
half time period. Watching commercials
won’t be enough to bring folks back,
however.
Each of us as parishioners will be
responsible for inviting people to try the
Catholic Church again. Watch the bulletin
for more. Or better yet. Why wait? Invite
someone you know to come back home
again to the Catholic Church.

The Family Tends to God’s Things
There comes a
difficult time in
the life of every
parent around the
world and it is
allowing our
children to make their own decisions and
follow their own ways. In a country that
is not our native home, things can often
become even more complicated when our
children grow away from the Hispanic
values and traditions we highly treasure.
We may have the tendency to be overly
protective or go with the flow of the
society around us. And the truth is that
the line between properly protecting our
children and allowing them to live their
own life is very thin. We talk a lot today
about creating a vocation culture, in other
words a religious, family, and social
environment in which the calls from God
are considered and where the family
encourages the children to follow his
ways, and later respect and support their
decisions. This is not very easy.
Sometimes parents believe they know
what is best for their children or understandably want them to triumph and
succeed - but according to their own
standards. The important thing is to listen
carefully and be opened to young people’s
most intimate desires and possibilities.
Helping them to see what God might be
calling them to do, even if it is not exactly
what we would have dreamed for them in
material terms. It is the same thing that
Mary and Joseph endured while desperately looking for Jesus in Jerusalem. The
response from Jesus, simple and clear, is
the response we would wait for and accept
from our own children: “I was tending to
God’s things,” in other words I was doing
what God wants from me. Only then can
they be completely happy, fulfilled and
have a full life. Only then can we know
that the family has successfully completed
what they were entrusted with.

The Holy Family
of Jesus, Mary,
Joseph
(Jesus) went down
with them and
came to Nazareth,
and was obedient
to them, and his
mother kept all
these things in her heart. - Luke 2:51
Many mothers and fathers know quite
well what Mary kept in her treasure-chest
heart: the terror of losing sight of your
child, even for a moment. The anxiety of
watching your child take risks. The pain
of watching your child hurt. The yearning
to see your child attain lasting
happiness. All parents have treasurechest hearts. Holy families understand
that sometimes obedience requires
great sacrifice.

"Quiero algo diferente, voy a comenzar bien,
nuevo amor a mi pareja y a mi familia, seré mejor padre o madre.
quiero volver a empezar".
