In the 2,000 year history of the Church, there have been 22 councils. We hear about the first council, the Council of Jerusalem in today’s first reading. The Church continues to instruct us today: in the articles of faith known as doctrine, liturgical practice, the moral life, guidance on prayer, and so on. At the same time, we know full well that many people are not ready to receive the teaching of the Church with joy. Some are reluctant to accept and follow the Church’s teaching on marriage, life, artificial contraception, homosexuality, etc. Our culture today is largely suspicious of authority. However, it is both necessary and good for there to be certain individuals or bodies entrusted with authoritative voices in order to bring about harmony and peace. Consider referees or umpires in sports. Without such authority, games would quickly devolve into bickering and collapse upon themselves. An umpire or referee is a living voice that supports the flow of the game. Similarly, the Magisterium doesn’t exist to shut down the life of the Church. Rather, it exists to preserve and teach the faith so we may not err. Jesus says, “Whoever loves me will keep my word.” His Word comes to us through the Church. Jesus further says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Keeping Jesus’ word, given to us through the Church, will bring us peace and keep the game, our lives, flowing. ©2016 Life Teen, Inc. All rights reserved We welcome the infants who were recently initiated into the family of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism: Nikolas Mario Jimenez, Apolonia Kelly, Cora McFarlane Ladd May they always feel the love of God working through their lives as they are guided by their parents and godparents. Dear parishioners, we need your help in regards to cars parking illegally in our parking lot. Violations are being written up by Turner Security in hopes everyone will adhere to the appropriate parking areas. It is illegal to park where there is no marked stalls, in the red zones, double-park or to block the pedestrian walk/path. Please understand this is a SAFETY issue. Police, Fire and emergency vehicles must be able to reach us in time of an emergency. As a tip to remember, if you are late to mass, our parking lot will be full, therefore, additional parking is available in the school lot behind the school building and is open from 7am to 7:30pm. Entrance is on the south school gate on Maroa. Please take note: St. Anthony of Padua is not responsible for any cars that are ticketed by police. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation! 1 DE MAYO DEL 2016 - SEXTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA PAGE 3 MASS INTENTIONS - PRAYERS - PETITIONS - SACRAMENTS - STEWARDSHIP READINGS AND MASS INTENTIONS (MAY 1 - MAY 8, 2016) SUNDAY’S READINGS CAN BE FOUND AT #915C IN THE JOURNEYSONGS SUNDAY 5/1 8:00 am 9:30 am 11:00 am 1:00 pm (Español) 3:30 pm (Latin) 6:00 pm MONDAY 5/2 6:45 am 8:00 am TUESDAY 5/3 6:45 am 8:00 am 5/4 6:45 am 8:00 am THURSDAY 5/5 6:45 am 8:00 am 12:15 pm (Latin) FRIDAY 5/6 6:45 am 8:45 am 5:30 pm 7:00 pm (Español) SATURDAY 5/7 8:00 am 5:15 pm 7:00 pm(Spanish) SUNDAY 5/8 MOTHER’S DAY 8:00 am 9:30 am 11:00 am 1:00 pm (Español) 3:30 pm (Latin) 6:00 pm SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ACTS 15:1-2, 22-29; PS 67:2-3, 5-6, 8; RV 21:10-14, 22-23; JN † James Ochinero by his daughters and grandsons † Guiseppina LaRocca by Rosanna Lampman Intentions of Father Bert Mello by Vince & NormaJean Liscano † Jose Luna por Maria Luna † Maria Guadalupe Segoviano by Delia Segoviano † Jose Bernardo by Bernadette Coelho ACTS 16:11-15; PS 149:1B-6A, 9B; JN 15:26 -- 16:4A † Carrie Dunn Penchuk by her family † Marianne Key by Pat Johnson 1 COR 15:1-8; PS 19:2-5; JN 14:6-14 Intentions of The Wiliam Jordan Famly by MaryBeth & Marvin Perez † Jean Kersten by Ed Kersten ACTS 17:15, 22 -- 18:1; PS 148:1-2, 11-14; JN 16:12-15 † JoAnn Stephens by Dennis & Olivia Murane † Pietro & Davidina Mastrocinque by Rosanna Lampman ACTS 18:1-8; PS 98:1-4; JN 16:16-20 † John Hopkins by Kit Hopkins † Lorraine Forestiere by her children Intentions of Mike Mosier by SA Church Staff ACTS 18:9-18; PS 47:2-7; JN 16:20-23 † June Klein by Bill Klein † Joyce Neumeier by Mario & Teri Lóera, and family † Charlotte Girado by Ed Girado & family † Clementina Ramirez by Amelia Chavez ACTS 18:23-28; PS 47:2-3, 8-10; JN 16:23B-28 Special Intentions-St. Leopoldo by Angelina & Mike DiNuzzo Intentions of All Mothers, Living & Deceased Pro Populo ASCENSION OF THE LORD / LA ASCENSION DEL SENOR ACTS 1:1-11; PS 47:2-3, 6-9; EPH 1:17- 23; LK 24:46-53 Intentions of All Mothers, Living & Deceased Intentions of All Mothers, Living & Deceased Intentions of All Mothers, Living & Deceased Intentiones de TODAS las mamas, Vivas y Fallecidas Intentions of All Mothers, Living & Deceased Intentions of All Mothers, Living & Deceased RECENTLY REQUESTED: George Petersen by Helen Hein Members of Asisclo Abenir Family by Cynthia KeithleyTimotea Lubi by Mercy Lubi Pacita Reyes by Angelina Chavez Angelo Prandini by Paul & MaryAnn Belfy INTENTIONS: Alan P. HELP EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS IN ECUADOR Steubenville San Diego is a Catholic conference for teens, is a weekend filled with great speakers, engaging music, reverent Mass and prayer, and tremendous fellowship. Through powerful witness, inspiring worship and dynamic liturgies, Steubenville San Diego offers youth, young adults and leaders the opportunity to encounter Christ and to see the truth and beauty of our Church. To be loved so that they may go out into the world and love one another! Registration Forms are available at our Life Nights and in our parish office. Space is limited! Fee for the conference is 285.00. Non refundable deposit of 75.00 will hold your spot. On April 16, 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador, killing at least 350 people, a number that is expected to rise as first responders reach the affected area. This is the strongest earthquake Ecuador has experienced since 1979. Hundreds more have been injured, and there are reports of widespread damage to buildings, roads and other infrastructure. Communications are down or intermittent, further complicating damage assessment and need. Given the widespread impact, Catholic Relief Services is coordinating with other humanitarian organizations and our partners to determine priorities. Water, food and emergency shelter will be the biggest needs in the coming days. PLEASE log to http://www.crs.org to donate. Thank you! Job Opportunity! " St. Anthony School has a teaching position opening in the junior high. The position is for a 7th grade homeroom teacher who would teach 7th grade social studies, 7th grade literature, and a 7th/8th grade pre-algebra or algebra class. If you are interested, please contact the principal of the school, Susannah Nelson, at [email protected] or (559) 435-0700." 1 DE MAYO DEL 2016 - SEXTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA PAGE 5 2016 CONFIRMANDS - WORLD YOUTH DAY @Pontifex April 23 Dear Young Friends, your names are written in heaven in the merciful heart of the Father. Be brave and go against the tide! “In this Jubilee Year, let us allow God to surprise us. He never tires of casting open the doors of his heart and of repeating that he loves us and wants to share his love with us.”(Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus) God casts open the doors of his heart to share his love, but is the door of your heart open to welcome him? Are there any doors in your heart that might be closed off to receiving that love right now? Spend some time today asking God to surprise you and open your heart fully to his redeeming love. Amoris Laetitia: On Love in the Family by Pope Francis In his groundbreaking apostolic exhortation on modern family life, Amoris Laetitia: On Love in the Family, Pope Francis continues to guide and lead the Church, calling us to be a sign of mercy and encouragement for families of all shapes and sizes. The same mercy and patience that are essential for building a strong family must be shown to those whose families are in trouble or have broken up, Pope Francis said in his highly anticipated postsynodal apostolic exhortation. The document, "'Amoris Laetitia' (The Joy of Love), on Love in the Family," released April 8, contains no new rules or norms. However, it encourages careful review of everything related to family ministry and, particularly, much greater attention to the language and attitude used when explaining church teaching and ministering to those who do not fully live that teaching. "No family drops down from heaven perfectly formed; families need constantly to grow and mature in the ability to love," Pope Francis wrote. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. PAGINA 10 MAY 1, 2016 - SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER PARISH EVENTS & OTHER NEWS AROUND THE DIOCESE Register to vote or you have no choice Election Days in 2016 are Tuesday, June 7 (California Presidential Primary Election) and Tuesday, November 8 (United States Presidential & General Election). If eligible, we, as the faithful community of believers in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno, MUST vote. I underscore MUST although it is certainly one’s “right” to choose not to vote. But this “right” does not necessarily make it right. Voting is a privilege graciously bestowed on us by God. According to the California Secretary of State’s website “Report of Registration by County as of January 5, 2016” most counties in our diocese are among those in California having the lowest percentage of voter registrations. Within our eight-county diocesan geographical boundaries, there are over 1.6 million eligible voters. Unfortunately (surprisingly or sadly) just over 1.0 million are registered to vote which is an overall percentage of only 64.40%. So, in our diocese just under 600,000 — or roughly 1 in 3 — persons eligible to vote are not even registered. If you are eligible, take the time and make the effort now to register to vote since there will be state propositions (initiatives) on the ballot that may have the support and recommendations of our California Catholic bishops. We are, as faithful Catholics, called to “faithful citizenship” nationwide by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and statewide by the California Catholic Conference of Bishops. For Catholic information on “FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP” please see “Issues and Action” at www.usccb.org and “TEACHING” at www.cacatholic.org. Also view the Diocese of Fresno website at www.dioceseoffresno.org. If you’re Catholic and eligible to vote, what’s keeping you from registering? As Catholics it’s our duty and obligation to exercise our “right” to vote. I urge you to register today. Vote, and the choice is yours. Don’t vote, and the choice is someone else’s. Register to vote, or you have no choice! Golf For Life Mark your calendars for a day of golf and fun to support the sanctity of human life.
