A brief update of our activities
November 2015
Quick overview of MSF finances
The Muhammad Subuh Foundation has received over $6.5 million (amounts in
USD) in donations over the past 25 years as well as a further $1.6 million from
dividends, bank interest, and investment gains. Over $2.5 million of these
donations have come from members’ bequests and legacies in their wills. The
Muhammad Subuh Foundation does not engage in traditional fund raising
since we do not wish to detract from the funding of the ongoing operations of
the World Subud Association or National Affiliates.
One of MSF's responsibilities is to secure and manage funds for the
long-term benefit and growth of Subud. Of the $8.1 million administered
by the foundation, $3.9 million is in long-term investments and cash reserves.
A professional investment company is managing these funds. Further, the
Muhammad Subuh Foundation has been able to support numerous Subud
activities, including, Subud Houses ($1.7 million), International Helper Travel
and WSA support (U$1.0 million), Archives ($0.4 million), and the Wings
($0.3 million).
Our goal is to increase its capital base to $10 million so that our primary goals

Trustees meet in Santiago, Chile

The WSC meeting took place at the
beautiful Providencia Subud House
in Santiago (right). Several days
prior to the WSC meeting the MSF
trustees held its separate meetings
and then overlapped its time with
joint meetings for a couple days
with WSC.

reports from Nigeria and DRC.
Hakeem Naibi and Rida Odon-François Liobo Loote, reps from Zones 5 and 6,
had arrived at the WSC meeting and provided updates on the grants that MSF
provided several years ago to Lagos, Calabar and Kinshasa. Trustees were able
to meet in person with Luqman Rivera, our legal representative for the Gran
Salon in Columbia. He provided a good update on the current status of the
Gran Salon. Finally, the trustees were able to meet in videoconference with our
professional investment company, Goldlake Capital, to review our portfolio
assets. The agenda also included budget, finance, endowments,
communications, eco-grants, contract reviews, national liaisons, trustee selfevaluations, gift policy, web site, indemnification, capital investment and
reimbursement policy. As you can see it was a full agenda.
The board also had joint meetings with WSA to discuss MSF bylaws, vacant
trustee position, IH travel, archives, fundraising, the Gran Salon at Amanecer,
and its 2016 budget.
Many thanks to the hospitality of the Subud Chile group, to Renato Sotelo,
Subud Chile Chairman, for the use of the Providencia house and to the
organizational skills of Mauricio Castillo for all their tireless work that resulted
in an excellent venue for our meetings. It was a wonderful gift to be there,
especially as MSF had helped to fund the upgrade of the Providencia house in
preparation for the meeting.
Further thoughts about the meeting
Marston Gregory, Chairperson and MSF Trustee: Chile was a
wonderful site for the meetings for both MSF and WSC with
lodging at a convenient hotel just five blocks from the Santiago
Subud House. There was a large tented backyard for meeting and
dining that worked well. Debbie Machado-Santos and an
assistant chef (trained on cruise ships) prepared many of the
meals that were healthy, organic and superb. Prior to the WSC
meeting, the Santiago group had received a grant from MSF of $6,500 for
renovations and due to a huge effort the facilities were freshly painted, a new
kitchen added, bathrooms upgraded, and the latihan spaces were newly
carpeted. The care and goodwill of the Santiago group was wonderful.
Our MSF meeting was very productive as many practical items were dealt with
and resolved. The trustees took the opportunity to award two eco-grants, one to
Subud Portland, Oregon, USA and the other to Subud Washington D.C. (see
photos below). This new program attracted eight excellent proposals and will
be continued next year in a revised format. Some of the proposals that did not
receive funds in this competition are considering resubmission under our
regular application process for this November.
The WSC meeting was extremely harmonious and many difficult issues were
discussed but with a good feeling and always turning for guidance as needed. A
touching moment at the end was when all of us held arms in a big circle and
gave thanks for our time together - followed by singing and some dancing to
“You Are My Sunshine”. This feeling of oneness with the whole world was a
special moment I shall always cherish.
Of course one major event was the 8.3 earthquake, with its many, many

aftershocks. This seemed to bond us more together. There was no damage in
the city or to the center. My hope is meeting in a Subud facility becomes a
tradition; it saves money and demonstrates the importance of our centers. The
earthquake…hopefully, would NOT become a tradition.
And, may God bless our work ahead these next 3 years.
Rasjidah Franklin, Vice Chairperson and MSF Trustee: One can
truly say that the MSF/WSC meeting in Chile was earthshaking!
Santiago rock ‘n rolled with earthquakes for many days during
our stay. The room in which we were meeting when the 8.3 quake
hit will forever be known in my memory as the “earthquake
room”. After awhile it felt as if the ground were continually
shaking. In the meantime we continued to conduct the business
at hand.
MSF Trustees spent six or more hours a day around a table in the basement
conference room of the NH Hotel dealing with pertinent issues. These ranged
from reviewing applications for Eco grants to meeting with previous grant
recipients from the DR Congo and Nigeria to considering a lease proposal for
the Gran Salon at Amanecer, to refining the budget and investment strategies,
and many more issues relating to the business of MSF. However, when I think
back on the ten days MSF spent in Santiago, the highlights for me personally
are not the hours spent on business, but rather the time spent in fellowship
with Subud members from Chile and around the world.
I was struck by the number of young people
involved in Subud Chile. They helped prepare
and serve the beautiful dinner honoring MSF
at the La Florida group’s house. They were
present for the awarding of a plaque (right)
commemorating the support MSF gave to the
Santiago group for renovating their house.
They came for a dinner and social event for
members from around the country.
The latihans were deep and full. Testing on the meaning of MSF for the growth
and development of Subud at our final group latihan with the international
helpers and WSA directors was for me electrifying!
These are the stand-outs for me of our time in Chile.
Michael Heathecote, Treasurer and MSF Trustee: I will
remember the warmth, generosity and good humour of the
Chilean people for a very long time. Our Chilean Subud brothers

and sisters extended the hand of friendship to us all.
A year ago in Puebla MSF seemed to be locked in meetings for
most of the time and I found it difficult to feel part of the wider
Subud organisation. This year in Santiago this issue was partly
addressed and more time was spent with WSA, WSC and the Wings.
I am now looking forward to next year when I hope both the MSF’s and WSC’s
agenda will be fully coordinated thereby making us one whole body meeting
together. I believe that Subud will have its best effect on helping mankind if the
sum of all its parts work together and MSF, WSA, and WSC work towards our
common goal which is the growth of Subud.
Lucian Parshall, MSF Executive Director: While in Santiago, the
MSF trustees were invited to dinner by the members of the
Subud La Florida group, located about 40 minutes southeast of
Santiago. In 1987, the group secured a loan from the Foundation
and wished to express their gratitude for the loan and share their
thankfulness for having a wonderful house to do latihan.
The house (photo of backyard on the left) is totally supported by the group.
Local regulations prevent a non-profit from using their facility to make money.
So the La Florida group offers the house to the nearby community to share for
free. In return the community holds weddings and family reunions at the house
– while watching over it.
All the guests had a wonderful evening that included introductions, a little
history about the group, and a tasty meal (photo right) that went on for hours.
A short message from our chair
Our new MSF team, now with one full year under its belt, is working, very well
together and especially with the leadership of our new Executive Director,
together and especially with the leadership of our new Executive Director,
Lucian Parshall, with our continuing experienced Grants Administrator, Lillian
Shulman, and our long-time Accountant, Elwyn Waugh. In addition, a new tool
has been added to our website so trustees can access past documents using an
intranet function which will be very useful now and for future trustees.
A key task over the next couple months is filling a vacant trustee position for
Michael van der Matten. We wish to thank Michael for his service; even though
it was for a short period of time it was most valuable. Michael will continue
with his National Helper duties in the UK. This resignation revealed our need
to consider an eight-person trustee board. Having seven trustees, not only
makes MSF out of compliance with our Corporation Articles but when one
person resigns it places additional work on the existing trustees. In 2016, we
will have 3 vacant trustee positions (trustees serve a four year term which is
staggered every two years). Under the circumstances we will need to secure
four positions, so if and when a trustee needs a ‘breather’ the work will
continue to be done. There are no term limits as a trustee (current trustees can
retest); however, we all understand the appropriateness of new perspectives
and new energy.

What is the purpose and significance of MSF?
To me, it has a very special role indeed. I see it as a vehicle for the
life of Subud here on earth. In past history every religion had
members or believers who built very beautiful places inspired by
their inner culture and talent to express their love for the power
of Almighty God or our Creator. And these buildings of churches,
cathedrals and temples stood as a symbol to remind us to take
the time to find inner space and complete peace within ourselves.
We all need to find a sacred space inwardly but it is also necessary to build a
home in which members can truly worship and share and respect the values of
the gift we have been given from God through our beloved Bapak. Of course we
do not need something elaborate but what we need is a clean, quiet, empty
space that is suitable for us to feel and receive our contact with the great life
force or the Holy Spirit. A place where we can worship together in unison
regardless of race culture or religion… Let's not forget that this is our
contribution and our prayer for WORLD PEACE the only gift we can leave
behind.

How else can we prove that we can accept, care, and love all human beings if we
do not have the way to express this attitude?
Subud Ukraine update
The Cherkassy group in the Ukraine recently received a USD 11,200
supplemental grant for a capital improvement project to their Subud House.
Capital improvement extends useful life through upgrades that are not
incidental, in short they ‘put’ property in a better operating condition rather
than ‘keeping’ it to an existing condition.
Rebekka Sandra Lykhatska, Subud Ukraine kejiwaan councillor said:
"When I was approaching the Subud house yesterday evening, my eyes
were attracted by something bright and cheerful among mixed styles of
buildings on the background of cloudy sky…then, having entered the
yard, suddenly I discovered the same bright and joyful terracotta
islands on the withered grass! Yes, those were long-awaited tiles
for our new roof!"
As you can see in the photos the old roof consisted of corrugated steel (left),
which rusts over time. The new roof (right) consists of the more durable metal
roofing sheets that look like terracotta.

Otras reflexiones sobre la reunión

cruceros) preparadas muchas de las comidas que estaban sanos,
orgánicos y magnífico. Antes de la reunión de la CSM, el grupo de
Santiago había recibido una subvención de MSF de $ 6,500 para
las renovaciones y debido a un enorme esfuerzo de las
instalaciones estaban recién pintadas, una nueva cocina añadió,
baños actualizados, y los espacios latihan estaban recién
alfombradas. El cuidado y la buena voluntad del grupo de Santiago fue
maravilloso.
Nuestra reunión MSF fue muy productiva ya que muchos artículos prácticos
fueron tratados y resueltos. Los fideicomisarios aprovecharon la oportunidad
para otorgar dos eco-becas, una para Subud Portland, Oregon, EE.UU. y el otro
a Subud Washington DC (ver fotos abajo). Este nuevo programa atrajo a ocho
excelentes propuestas y se continuará el año que viene en un formato revisado.
Algunas de las propuestas que no recibieron los fondos en este concurso están
considerando volver a presentar bajo nuestro proceso de aplicación regular de
este mes de noviembre.
La reunión de la CSM fue muy armoniosa y se discutieron muchas cuestiones
difíciles, pero con una buena sensación y siempre girando de orientación, según
sea necesario. Un momento conmovedor al final fue cuando todos nosotros
enlazamos de brazos en un gran círculo y dimos gracias por compartir tiempo
juntos - seguido por el canto y un poco de baile de "You Are My Sunshine". Este
sentimiento de unidad con todo el mundo era un momento especial que
siempre voy a cuidar.
Por supuesto un acontecimiento importante fue el terremoto de 8.3, con
muchas réplicas. Esto nos unia más. No hubo daños en la ciudad o el centro. Mi

Santiago de rock 'n rodó con los terremotos durante muchos días
durante nuestra estancia. La habitación en la que se reunían
cuando el golpe de 8,3 siempre será conocido en mi memoria
como la "sala de terremoto". Después de un tiempo se sentía
como si el suelo temblaba continuamente. Mientras tanto
seguimos llevar a cabo el negocio en cuestión.
MSF Síndicos pasaron seis o más horas al día en torno a una
mesa en la sala de conferencias del sótano del NH Hotel se
ocupan de cuestiones pertinentes. Estos iban desde la revisión de las solicitudes
de subvenciones Eco de la reunión con los beneficiarios de subvenciones
anteriores de la República Democrática del Congo y Nigeria a considerar una
propuesta de arrendamiento para el Gran Salón en Amanecer, para refinar las
estrategias presupuestarias y de inversión, y muchas más cuestiones
relacionadas con el negocio de MSF . Sin embargo, cuando pienso en la MSF
diez días pasado en Santiago, lo más destacado para mí, personalmente, no son

Estos son los stand-outs para mí de nuestra visita en Chile.

serán totalmente coordinaron la agenda de la CSM de MSF y con
ello hacer una reunión de todo el cuerpo juntos. Creo que Subud tendrá su
mejor efecto en ayudar a la humanidad si la suma de todas sus partes trabajar
juntos y MSF, WSA, y el trabajo CSM hacia nuestro objetivo común, que es el
crecimiento de Subud MSF:.

Para mí, tiene una muy papel especial. Yo lo veo como un

interna y talento para expresar su amor por el poder de Dios
Todopoderoso o nuestro Creador. Y estos edificios de iglesias,
catedrales y templos de pie como un símbolo para recordarnos
que tomar el tiempo para encontrar el espacio interior y la paz
completa dentro de nosotros mismos.
Todos tenemos que encontrar un espacio sagrado por dentro
pero también es necesario la construcción de un hogar en el que los usuarios
pueden verdaderamente culto y compartir y respetar los valores del don que

hemos recibido de Dios a través de nuestro querido Bapak. Por supuesto que no
necesitamos algo complicado, pero lo que necesitamos es un tranquilo espacio
limpio, y vacío que es adecuado para nosotros sentimos y recibimos nuestro
contacto con la gran fuerza de la vida o el Espíritu Santo. Un lugar donde
podemos adorar juntos al unísono, independientemente de la cultura o la

El grupo Cherkasy en Ucrania recibió recientemente una subvención
