San Antonio will go into
overdrive next month with a
little help from an energy drink
that gives you wings.
District 1 City Councilman
Robert Treviño announced
Tuesday morning that the city
is ready to welcome the first
Red Bull Last Stand, which
will take place on Saturday,
Oct. 15 at Alamo Plaza located
at 300 Alamo Plaza. The free
night-time event will offer spectacular views of athletes riding
at speeds of up to 40mph with
the iconic Alamo Plaza serving
as the backdrop to the race.
“We have such an excited
community here, and we are
very proud to help host an
incredible event here at the
Alamo. It is one of the most
distinct sites in Texas, if not the
whole world,” stated Councilman Treviño.
Councilman Treviño amplified the announcement with
the help of Race Director Ravi
Rajcoomar and Champion
Cyclist Addison Zawada. The
event will consist of three divisions riding in four separate
races, which will include the
Fixed Women (USA Cycling
Category 1-4), Fixed Men (USA
Cycling Category 1-5), Geared
Women (USA Cycling Category 1-4) and Geared Men (USA
Cycling Category 1-4).
There will be a 15-minute
timed group session with a
max of 50 riders with the fastest transponder time used to
qualify and seed the top 50
riders for the Men’s Finals and
top 30 riders for the Women’s
Finals. The Men’s Finals will
be 50 laps with the last rider
across the finish line being removed after every lap until one
last rider remains.

man who complete the most
combined laps in Fixed Gear
and Geared races that hold the
highest single finish in either

Gunner’s Mate Chief Petty
Officer Steve A. Durán Jr., a
San Antonio native, retired
from the U.S. Navy after 20
years of service during a ceremony attended by family and
friends on Sept. 3.
Durán enlisted in the Navy
on Oct. 28, 1996 at the age
of 20. He reported to the base
of Grate Lakes, Ill, where he
graduated from the Recruit
Training and Gunner Mate “A”
School on July 3, 1997.
His first duty station was at
the USS Comstock in San Diego, Calif. and was assigned to
the Weapon’s Division where
he maintained the ship’s armory until he was transferred
in 2000. He also served as a
MK Vertical Launch System
technician.
Next, he was assigned to
Norfolk, Va. as an instructor
for small arms marksmanship
and also as a Norfolk Riverine
Patrol boat officer. He later
served as an ammunition inventory management specialist.
During his enlistment, Durán
was stationed onboard de ships

FIRST ANNUAL SAN ANTONIO WORLD HERITAGE
FESTIVAL – The City of San Antonio, in coordination with
Bexar County, San Antonio River Authority (SARA), National
Park Service, The Alamo, National Parks Conservation Association, Los Compadres, Las Misiones and the Rivard Report, is
organizing a World Heritage Festival to be held Sept. 7-11. The
festival will celebrate the first anniversary of the San Antonio
Missions designation as a World Heritage Site. A full schedule

UTSA INSTITUTE OF TEXAN CULTURES FREE SECOND SUNDAY –The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures will
give guests an opportunity to commemorate impactful moments
in history. The museum has chosen Gemini Ink to lead an
exploration of what freedom means to us through fun, interactive writing exercises. Hands-on activities for the day include
contributing leaves to a “Liberty Tree,” a “symbols of freedom”
drawing opportunity that asks participants to draw their favorite
emblems that remind them of freedom, courage and liberty; and
a remembering and sharing table where families can discuss the
events of 9/11 together, recounting the memories and impact
the event had on their lives. Dan Arrellano, author of “Tejano
Roots: A Family Legend,” will give a presentation connecting
the Battle of Medina, the “biggest and bloodiest battle ever

groups. Exhibit booths with free giveaways will be present.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC – The hills are alive! A brand new
production of “The Sound of Music,” directed by three-time
Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien, is coming to the Majestic
Theatre. The beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp
Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony, Grammy
and Academy Award winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and the title song. “The Sound of Music”
enjoyed extraordinary success as a live television production
when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December,
2013 and was seen by over 44 million people. 2015 marked
the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be
the most successful movie musical in history. The Broadway
show will run through Sept. 13-18 at the Majestic Theatre,

Castro announces
$4M to help end
veterans homelessness

Congressman Joaquin Castro
(TX-20) recently announced
that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) renewed
$4,040,000.00 of federal funding
for the nonprofit agency Family
Endeavors.
The money is awarded under
the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program
to help thousands of very lowincome veteran families around
the nation who are permanently
housed or transitioning to permanent housing. The SSVF grant
program provides access to crucial
services to prevent homelessness
for veterans and their families.
“I’m honored to represent
‘Military City USA’ in Congress,”
said Rep. Castro. “It’s critical our
government find ways to support the men and women who
have sacrificed so much to keep
Americans safe and protect our
freedoms. With this substantial
VA funding, Family Endeavors
will be able to continue its work
empowering veterans and their
families to gain financial security
and peace of mind. Helping our
patriots should be a priority for
all Americans, and I’m proud that
we have organizations like Family
Endeavors doing just that in San
Antonio and beyond.”

Endeavors’ mission is to provide
comprehensive, effective, and innovative services that empower
people to build better lives for
themselves, their families, and
their communities. The organization provides an array of
programs and services in support
of children, families, veterans
and those struggling with mental
illness and other significant disabilities.
“Family Endeavors is honored
to have had our Supportive
Services for Veteran Families
funding renewed so that we can
continue to provide resources for
Veteran families,” said President
and CEO of Family Endeavors
Travis Pearson. “Since we began
receiving funding in 2011, we
have served more than 15,000
Veteran households throughout
the country. We look forward
to helping more Veterans find
the support they need to build
healthy, self-sufficient lives.”
In fiscal year (FY) 2015, SSVF
served more than 157,000 participants and is on track to exceed
that number in FY 2016. As a
result of these and other efforts,
veteran homelessness is down 47
percent since the launch of the
Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent
and End Homelessness in 2010.
Also since 2010, more than
360,000 veterans and their family
members have been permanently
housed, rapidly re-housed, or
prevented from falling into homelessness by VA’s homelessness
programs and targeted housing
vouchers provided by the Department of Housing and Urban
Development.

New Fire Station for annexed
area in District 3 breaks ground

53 will accommodate a fire engine
and a brush truck that will operate out of the station. The new
modular building will include two
bays, living quarters, site work and
utilities.
“Any day we can break ground
on a new fire station is a great day.
The opening of Fire Station 53 will
greatly help to serve the citizens
of this area and improve on our
response times to these additional
areas,” said Fire Chief Hood.
The project is managed by
Transportation and Capital Improvements for the San Antonio
Fire Department. The consultant
is Beaty Palmer Architects and the
contractor is Allbrite Constructors
of Texas. The project is funded by
the Fiscal Year 2016 Tax Notes
for $963,000. Fire Station 53 is
expected to be in operation January 2017.

Meals on Wheels now delivers
¡Por Vida! approved healthy meals
Meals on Wheels San Antonio, a service of the Christian
Senior Services, joined ¡Por
Vida!, a Metro Health healthy
dining program. Meals on
Wheels delivers 3,800 meals
every weekday to homebound
seniors, providing them with
both the comfort of daily contact and a nourishing meal.
“It’s great to be recognized
for the healthy diets we provide our clients,” said Jim
Snyder, director of Meals on
Wheels of San Antonio. “Once
people recognize we deliver
meals that are nutritious, and
taste good too, we hope to
hear from more seniors in need
of assistance.”
Registered dietitians from
Metro Health and Meals on
Wheels worked together to
certify the menus based on
strict ¡Por Vida! nutritional
criteria that limits calories,
saturated fat, added sugar, sodium (salt). Approved menus
also may not include fried
items or contain hydrogenated
oils (trans-fat). ¡Por Vida!
approved menus include the
diabetic heart healthy menu,
the bland diet menu and the
gluten-free menu.
“Access to nutritious meals
is important especially to the
Meals on Wheels participants
who depend on the delivery of
these meals. We are thrilled to
recognize the program for the
healthy meals they provide to
our community,” says Anna

with Metro Health’s ¡Por Vida!
program.

2009 by The Healthy Restaurants Coalition, a partnership

(SAFC) en menos de un mes
enfrentó al club United SC
de Arizona y logró empatar
el marcador 1-1 con sorpresivo gol anotado de certero
derechazo ejecutado por el
mediocampista angelino Carlos Álvarez, quien al minuto
42:11 aprovechó asistencia de
su compañero, el defensa Max
Gunderson. Álvarez realizó
espectacular ejecución observada y aplaudida por 5,569
espectadores que acudieron a
honrar a las Fuerzas Armadas
durante el evento SAFC Military Appreciation Night en
el que se honró a hombres y
mujeres que se encuentran enlistados en el servicio militar
y quienes han servido al país
vistiendo el uniforme militar.
Por SAFC cubrió la portería el barbado arquero novato Matt Cardone, quien fue
“madrugado” aceptando gol
ejecutado por el delantero rival Long Tan, quien al minuto
8:42 recibió el esférico enviado por su compañero Tyler
