Reading 1 Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8
persecutor of Christians to a zealous apostle.
As Isaiah describes how God called him to be a
prophet, he remembers the scene as though it had
just happened. In a vision, Isaiah has "seen" the
Lord on a magnificent throne in the Temple. Glowing
angels called seraphim hover above the throne, and
the Temple shakes with their praise. Isaiah is overcome with the reality of his own sinfulness and
God's holiness. He protests that he cannot be a
prophet because of his "unclean lips." But an angel
purifies his lips with a glowing coal from the altar.
This is a sign that Isaiah is now completely worthy to
speak for God. Cleansed of his sin, Isaiah answers
the Lord's call by saying, "Here I am, send me!"
Discussion Questions for Reading 2
Have you ever seen a picture or an icon of the resurrection? Usually it shows Jesus in blazing white
robes, surrounded by light. The picture is trying to
tell us that Jesus is alive and full of light and love.
His new life is now more "alive" than his earthly life
was. He is no longer confined to his human body.
His life and love can be, and are, anywhere and
everywhere. How do we "see" the resurrection of
Jesus today? Where do we find his light, life, and
love? Where is the living Jesus today? How can we
be witnesses to his resurrection?
Discussion Questions for Reading 1
God's providence sends us little and big challenges. How
do you meet them? Do you say, "Oh, God, do I have to?"
or do you say, "Here I am, God. Send me!" Sometimes
life is like a game. When the ball comes your way, isn't it
your instinct to hit it, kick it, catch it, or do whatever the
game requires you to do with the ball? When God sends
a "ball" (a new responsibility, a new challenge, a little annoyance) your way, get in there and say, "Here I am,
God. I got it!" God does not ask that you handle every ball
perfectly. Like a good coach, he just wants you to try. And
you do not do this alone. You are part of a team. Who will
you ask for help when you need it? "
Reading 2 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 or 15:3-8, 11
Often when we want to convince others of an important truth,
we point to the testimony of the experts who believe that same
truth. Paul wants to be sure that the Christians of Corinth believe in the resurrection of Jesus. If they fail to grasp that central truth, their faith will be without meaning. So Paul lines up
all the important "experts," or witnesses, from Peter (Cephas)
on down to himself. Paul is probably the most convincing witness of all, because Christ himself converted Paul from being a
Gospel Reflection Luke 5:1-11
We can be sure that Peter remembered the scene in today's gospel story as clearly as Isaiah recalled his own
vision of God. Even though Simon is convinced that there
are no fish available, he tells Jesus, "At your command, I
will lower the nets." His trust is rewarded not only by a
huge catch of fish, but by Jesus' call to become a disciple. Peter, James, and John, overwhelmed by the presence of Jesus, drop everything and followed Him.
Discussion Questions for Gospel
For Peter, this catch was a wonderful surprise. He
was so overwhelmed that he said to Jesus, in effect,
"This is too much! I shouldn't be hanging around
with someone like you!" When have you been wonderfully surprised by God? How did you feel? When
Jesus says, "Do not be afraid," he is preparing Peter
for what is to come. "You think this is something?"
Jesus could have said. "Wait until you see all the
good we can do for God's people!" So Peter left everything and became a disciple.
You are a disciple. How can you "leave everything" to
follow Jesus in prayer and service this week?

Fasting and Abstinence
Fasting and Abstinence: To foster the spirit of penance and of reparation for sin, to encourage self-denial, and to guide us in the
footsteps of Jesus, Church law requires the observance of fast and abstinence (CCC, nos. 1249-1253).
1. Abstinence: All per sons, 14 year s and older , ar e obliged to abstain fr om meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fr idays
during Lent.
2. Fasting: Ever yone, fr om ages 18-59, is obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Voluntary fasting on other
weekdays of Lent, especially on Wednesdays and Fridays, is highly recommended. Fasting is generally understood to mean
that one full meal may be eaten. Two other small meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be eaten: but together they
should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Other forms of fasting,
especially from alcoholic beverages, needless television, video games, the internet and social entertainment, is of true spiritual value and is strongly encouraged. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, neither the law of fasting
nor the law of abstinence obliges. If in doubt, one’s parish priest or confessor may be consulted.

Join us for a mid-week experience filled with reflection, prayer, and conversation. Our Retreat Year will celebrate the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy announced by Pope Francis on March 12, 2015. Mercy, of course is the Biblical portrayal and experience of God. The God of the Hebrew Scriptures is rich in Mercy and filled with compassion. Since we are created in the image
and likeness of God, we are fashioned to be people of mercy and compassion
Holy Week Retreat March 24-27, 2016
In these holy days leading up to Easter, Christ invites us to share in His passion and recognize the great act of love
that it is. He invites us to participate in His Divine Sonship, calling out to our Merciful Father as He did in the Garden of Gethsemane. He asks that we walk with Him and help to bare the cross of love and sorrow.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION
To help stop the anti-life push around the world, the late
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen encouraged the spiritual
adoption of an unborn child. This is done by praying that the one
particular but unknown child’s life be spared abortion and be
allowed to continue to live. If you can help with this
project before/after a Mass on March 12th & 13th, please contact

This Lent our parish will participate in the Sacramento Life
Center’s Baby Bottle Project.
Between now and Ash Wednesday, please look for
your school, religious education student or parish to
bring home, or have available, a baby bottle for the purpose of collecting funds throughout the Lenten season
of almsgiving. This is a wonderful way children can
give back to their community and help others in need.
Families are asked to fill the baby bottles with paper
money, checks or coins throughout the first 5 weeks of
Lent. Please return all baby bottles at the end of the
fundraiser, including any empty bottles. Participating
students are eligible to enter drawings for prizes. This
fundraiser supports the mission of the Sacramento Life
Center, which is to offer compassion, support and free
medical services to women and men facing unplanned
or unsupported pregnancies in the greater Sacramento
area. Go to www.saclife.org or call Lynne at (916) 451

Primera lectura—
altar con unas tenazas; la aplicó a mi boca y me dijo: «Mira;
«¿A quién mandaré? ¿Quién irá por mí?» Contesté: «Aquí estoy, mándame. Palabra de Dios
Segunda lectura
Antes bien, he trabajado

otro acto piadoso.
