Volume 50, No. 11

Lenten Soup Suppers
A
s has been the practice for at least 30 years, parishioners of Sacred Heart mark Lenten Fridays with the Stations of the Cross
and Benediction, followed by a period of fellowship during a
simple meatless soup supper. The suppers are provided by various parish
ministries and organizations. These photographs share some of the faces
of the parishioners who come together each week to pray and share a
simple meal. These particular pictures were taken on the evening of
March 4, which was hosted by the AIDS and Gift of Grace House Ministries. Other ministries who have or
will host an evening are: Altar &
Rosary Society, St. Vincent de
Paul Society, Wedding Guild,
Flower Guild, Daughters of Isabella, Ushers, and Knights of Columbus. Many thanks to these ministries for making these evenings
possible and carrying on a Sacred
Heart tradition!

SUNDAY MASS READINGS

THE WEEKDAY READINGS
Isaiah 43:16-21 Psalm 126 Philippians 3:8-14 John 8:1-11
Monday: Dn 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62;
Ps 23:1-6; Jn 8:12-20
“God writes straight with crooked lines,” the saying
goes. The power of Paul’s testimony that everything is
junk but knowledge of Jesus and the power of his
resurrection is a straight enough message. And, God
knows, Paul had a crooked journey before his blinding
insight straight from God. Through Isaiah, God
reminds us all that the past great works were as nothing
compared to the new creation. “Can’t you see it?” we
are asked, as if we are still wandering along our crooked
lines. And there is no straighter line than that between
the woman whose misery is intense and the God whose
mercy in Jesus is deeper and more acute. You just can’t
beat this kind of good news.
Tuesday: Nm 21:4-9; Ps 102:2-3, 16-21;
Jn 8:21-30
Wednesday: Dn 3:14-20, 91-92, 95; Dn 3:52-56;
Jn 8:31-42
Thursday: Gn 17:3-9; Ps 105:4-9: Jn 8:51-59
Friday: Jer 20:10-13; Ps 18:2-7; Jn 10:31-42 Saturday: 2 Sm 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16; Ps 89:2-5, 27,

A PRAYER FOR THE 5TH WEEK
OF LENT
God of love,
I know that you are the source of all
that is good and graced in my life.
Help me to move from the life of sin
to which I so often cling,
into the new life of grace you offer me.
You know what I need to prepare for your kingdom.
Bless me with those gifts.

FAMILY LIFE MEDITATION FOR
LENT
MARCH 22, 7PM
I
ll are welcome to attend a Tenebrae Liturgy at
Sacred Heart on the Tuesday of Holy Week. The
term “Tenebrae” is Latin for shadows. It is a service of
scripture readings traditionally prayed during Holy
Week, and is characterized by a gradual darkening of
the church as candles are extinguished at three points
throughout the service. The assembly participates,
reading the psalms in parts, much as monks and
cloistered nuns do when praying the Liturgy of the
Hours.
n Spe Salvi, Pope Benedict XVI said:
Whoever is moved by love begins to perceive
what “life” really is. He begins to perceive the
meaning of the word of hope that we encountered
in the Baptismal Rite: from faith I await “eternal life”
— the true life which, whole and unthreatened in all its
fullness, is simply life. Jesus, who said that he had
come so that we might have life and have it in its
fullness, in abundance, has also explained to us what
“life” means: “this is eternal life, that they know you
the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have
sent” (Jn17:3). Life in its true sense is not something
we have exclusively in or from ourselves; it is a
relationship. And life in its totality is a relationship
with him who is the source of life. If we are in relation
with him who does not die, who is life itself and love
itself, then we are in life. Then we live.
As a family consider:
 How would our family be different if we didn’t
love at all?
 For couples, discuss moment of your life together
that helped you grow as a couple.
 Discuss stories of your children’s births and the gift
that each of their lives has been to your family.

Holy Saturday

SATURDAY MARCH 26, 10AM
n Eastern European countries the blessing of Easter
foods was an important tradition. In some places, the
blessing of special Easter food takes place on Holy
Saturday. Among the Slovaks a basket containing
lamb, dyed and plain boiled eggs, and a special Easter
bread is taken to the church where the priest blesses it.
The food is then taken home and eaten for breakfast on
Easter Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma
LECTURAS DE HOY
EL “MISTERIO PASCUAL”
L
Salmo — Grandes cosas has hecho por nosotros, Señor
(Salmo 126 [125]) o Salmo 130(129).
NUESTRA FE
Salmo responsorial: Leccionario I © 1976, Comisión Episcopal de
Pastoral Litúrgica de la Conferencia del Episcopado Mexicano. Usado
con permiso. Todos los derechos reservados.
A
Nuevas!”
