sabido conservar durante siglos estas dos joyas para que
podamos disfrutarlas en la actualidad.

El clima mediterráneo, suavizado por la brisa del litoral, un valioso

que contrastan con la ciudad industrial, de amplias avenidas y
modernas infraestructuras, son sus principales atractivos.
Elche es la tercera ciudad de la Comunidad Valenciana por número de
habitantes. La mayor parte de su población se concentra en la ciudad
y el resto se distribuye entre los núcleos rurales del Camp d’Elx:
Matola, la Foia, la Baia, Perleta, Vallverda, els Bassars, Torrellano,
l’Altet, els Arenals del Sol y la Marina, entre otros.
Elche se asienta en una llanura cruzada por las sierras del Molar,
Tabaià y Castellar, últimas estribaciones del sistema Bético, que

En la zona sur encontramos las playas del Pinet,
la Marina, y les Pesqueres-el Rebollo. Se trata de una franja de dunas
de arenas blancas y finas, sobre las cuales se encuentra un extenso
pinar. A menos de 1 km. de estas playas se sitúa el núcleo turístico de
la Marina d’Elx, desde el cual se contempla una vista magnífica del
Mediterráneo.
También es posible disfrutar de tres humedales típicos mediterráneos
de características bióticas extraordinarias: el Parc Natural del
Fondo Elx-Crevillent, un paraje de importantísimo valor ecológico
con 2.387 hectáreas donde se puede apreciar una gran variedad de
flora y fauna; el Clot de Galvany, una importante reserva de especies
autóctonas y, por último, el Parc Natural de les Salines d’Elx-Santa
Pola o antigua Albufera d’Elx.
Rodean la ciudad treinta partidas rurales. En esta zona, llamada el
Camp d’Elx, se obtiene una rica y variada producción agrícola que
permite cosechar productos como granadas, higos, dátiles, cítricos,
almendras y hortalizas.

Deep in the heart of the

Elx surprises the visitor
with its contrasting offers. The
Mediterranean climate, softened by
the sea breeze, a strong cultural and eco-friendly environment,
festivals and popular cultural traditions, which contrast greatly
with the industrial nature of the town with its wide avenues and
modern infrastructure are its key attractions.
Elx is the third city of the Valencian Community, based on its
population. Most of the inhabitants live within the town – with the
others living in the outlying district known as Camp d’Elx: Matola,
la Foia, la Baia, Perleta, la Vallverda, els Bassars, Torrellano,
l’Altet, els Arenals del Sol and la Marina amongst others.
Elx is located on a flat plain, crossed by the Molar, Tabaià and
Castellar hills, the last of the Iberian Betic System that makes up
the various landscapes within the district’s boundary, where the
palm tree has become a constant and characteristic feature. The
Elx Reservoir, built in 1632, collects water from the Vinalopó River,
which flows through the district.
Not far from the centre of the town, 9 kms of beach extend
where the sand dunes exist alongside pine trees, creating a scenic
Mediterranean landscape feature. At the northern end of the Elx
coastline we find a wide system of sand dunes that stretch from
the l’Altet beach to the els Arenals del Sol beach, a fully equipped
tourist resort with all the necessary infrastructures. The natural
fringe of sand dunes continues along the el Carabassí beach, at
the foot of the Santa Pola hills, where both nudists and dressed
bathers are allowed.
At the southern end lie el Pinet, la Marina and les Pesqueresel Rebollo beaches. This makes up a fringe of fine white sand
dunes on top of which grow a huge number of pine trees. The
tourist resort of la Marina d’Elx, with its spectacular views of the
Mediterranean, is situated less than 1 km from these beaches.
The visitor can also enjoy three typical Mediterranean natural
wetlands with some outstanding biotic features: the Elx-Crevillent
el Fondo Nature Reserve is an extremely important and valuable
ecological area of some 2,387 hectares in size where a huge
variety of flora and fauna can be found. The Clot de Galvany
Nature Reserve is another important haven for indigenous species
and, finally, the Elx-Santa Pola Saltpans now stand on what
used to be the ancient Albufera d’Elx, an inland wide sea lagoon
connected to the Mediterranean.
The council is made up of thirty district areas, which surround the
town. This part, known as the Camp d’Elx, is rich in agricultural
products and offers regular harvests of pomegranates, figs,
dates, oranges and lemons, almonds and vegetables.

El Palmeral
The Palm Groves
Los huertos de palmeras caracterizan el paisaje urbano de Elx.
Envuelven la ciudad formando una gran extensión de 2 km de largo
y 1 km de ancho, con tal número de palmeras que observado desde
cierta distancia parece un bosque. Cuenta con más de 200.000
ejemplares en todo el término municipal.
Aunque el origen del Palmeral es anterior,
fueron los árabes quienes iniciaron su cultivo
y aprovechamiento utilizando las técnicas
de la cultura de oasis característica del
Norte de África y el Oriente Medio. Para ello,
construyeron una compleja red de acequias que
todavía pervive. Este ejemplo de transferencia
y supervivencia de un paisaje característico desde una cultura y
un continente a otro, mereció la distinción como Patrimonio de la
Humanidad por la UNESCO para el Palmeral de Elche. La Ruta del
Palmeral permite visitar, en su recorrido de 2.580 mts. de longitud,
los huertos históricos y disfrutar su paisaje.
Elx’s town centre is characterised by its palm tree orchards. They
surround the city forming a surface of some 2 km long and 1 km
wide, which seen from a distance looks like a huge palm forest.
There are over 200,000 palm trees throughout the district.
The Palm Forest actually can be traced back to before
the Islamic invasion. Nevertheless, it was the Arabs
who began the process of growing the trees and
making use of them as features with knowledge gained
from North Africa and the Middle East. They did this
by building a complex network of irrigation ditches,
which still survive today. This example of how an
environment and culture has been exported and has
continued by the use of methods and ideas from another culture
and continent deserved recognition by UNESCO as a World Heritage
of the Elx Palm Forest. The Palm Forest Route allows the visitors
to enjoy a 2,580 m walk amongst these historic palm groves whilst
you can enjoy the unique landscape.

Misteri d’Elx
Patrimonio de la Humanidad
World Heritage
El Misteri d’Elx, la más genuina señal de identidad cultural de
la ciudad, es un drama cantado de origen medieval que ha sido
proclamado por la UNESCO Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e
Inmaterial de la Humanidad en el año 2001.
Se representa cada año los días 14 (primer acto) y 15 de agosto
(segundo acto), si bien los días 11, 12 y 13 se realizan unas funciones
extraordinarias previas. El drama tiene lugar en la Basílica de Santa
María y relata la Dormición, Asunción a los cielos y Coronación de la
Virgen María. Su supervivencia ha sido posible gracias a la pasión de
todo un pueblo.
Tras la prohibición de las representaciones teatrales en el interior de
las iglesias en el Concilio de Trento, Elx consiguió del Papa Urbano
VIII en 1632 un rescripto pontificio para mantener viva la Festa. La
perseverancia de los ilicitanos la ha convertido en el último vestigio
de este tipo de manifestaciones. La música del Misteri procede de
diferentes épocas, y posee melodías medievales, renacentistas y
barrocas, con ejemplos de monodia y polifonía. La interpretación está
a cargo de una capilla de cantores no profesional y una escolanía
infantil de voces blancas para los papeles de María y de ángeles.
Pero si hay algo que distingue al Misteri d’Elx es la complejidad de su
puesta en escena de inspiración medieval, con la división del espacio
escenográfico en horizontal-terrestre y vertical-aéreo, y la utilización
de aparatos aéreos que le confieren gran espectacularidad.
En el centro del crucero de la Basílica se alza un escenario
cuadrangular (cadafal) al que se accede a través de una rampa
(andador), en los que se desarrolla la mayor parte de la acción. En
la vertical del escenario se instala un falso cielo que se monta en la
base de la cúpula.
The Misteri d’Elx is the city’s most unique cultural identity event
and is a performance that is sung and dates from mediaeval times
and one that has been recognised as an Oral and Intangible World
Heritage Masterpiece by UNESCO in 2001.
It takes place on the 14th (1st Act) and 15th (2nd Act) of August
although there are dress rehearsals on the 11th, 12th and 13th. The
performance takes place in the Basílica of Santa María and tells the
story of the Dormition, Assumption to Heaven and Coronation of
Our Lady the Virgin Mary. It has survived thanks to the passion and
support of local people.
When theatrical representations and performances were forbidden
by the Council of Trent, Elx managed to get Pope Urban VIII in 1632
to give them a papal rescript to keep the celebration alive, known
locally as La Festa. The perseverance of the people of Elx has
brought us this last live vestige of mediaeval mystery plays. The
music of the Misteri d’Elx comes from different ages and contains
Mediaeval, Renaissance and Baroque melodies with examples of
monody and polyphony chants. The performance is organised and
delivered by a chapel group of amateur ‘cantors’ and a children
choir with boyish Alto voices for the roles of Mary and the Angels.
But if there is one thing that makes the Misteri d’Elx unique it is
the complexity of its staging reminiscent of mediaeval times with
a horizontal-earth and vertical-aerial stage space and the use of
aerial engines, which make it into a real spectacle.
In the centre of the transept of the Basilica there is a quadrangular
stage (cadafal) reached through a wooden corridor (andador), in
which most of the performance takes place. A false ceiling “sky” is
constructed right above the stage at the base of the dome.

Diversos pueblos han ido forjando la cultura y el carácter abierto de
Elx. Los primeros restos, encontrados en el yacimiento arqueológico
de l’Alcúdia, se remontan al Neolítico (hacia el 5.000 a.C.). Dicho
núcleo fue desarrollándose hasta configurar en el siglo V a.C. la
ciudad ibérica de Ilici. A esta etapa pertenece la famosa Dama de
Elche, una de las obras maestras del arte ibérico.
Destruida la ciudad por las tropas cartaginesas, con la llegada de
los romanos, pasó a ser la Colonia Iulia Ilici Augusta, etapa en la
que gozó de prosperidad y crecimiento urbanístico. De las épocas
Paleocristiana y Visigoda es la Basílica de Ilici, muestra de la
importancia de la ciudad como sede episcopal.
Bajo el dominio musulmán en la Edad Media, la ciudad se establece
en su emplazamiento actual, en la zona denominada la Vila Murada.
Es en esta época de desarrollo agrícola cuando se introduce un
complejo sistema de regadío. La conquista cristiana - en el año 1265
- desplazó a los musulmanes, que se vieron obligados a edificar una
nueva población en las cercanías de la Vila Murada, conocida como
el Raval de Sant Joan.
A mediados del siglo XIX surgió una importante industria
alpargatera, origen de la actual industria zapatera, que potenció el
crecimiento de la ciudad, tanto económica como culturalmente. Por
otra parte, el recinto de la Institución Ferial Alicantina - ubicado en el
término municipal de Elx - es el marco idóneo para la celebración de
ferias profesionales de ámbito internacional de actividades como el
calzado, la automoción, la hostelería, el ocio (golf, náutica, etc.), la
promoción inmobiliaria o la promoción turística.
Different civilizations have been involved in the culture and open
character of Elx as a town. The first remains found in the l’Alcúdia
archaeological site belong to the Neolithic period about 5,000 years
BC. The town continued to develop and became known as the Iberian
city of Ilici in the 5th century BC. The famous Dama de Elche bust
belongs to this period, one of the masterpieces of Iberian art.
Carthaginian troops destroyed Elx but with the arrival of the
Romans it became known as Colonia Iulia Ilici Augusta, a period
during which it blossomed and enjoyed economic growth. From the
Paleochristian and Visigoth eras, the Basilica of Elx is a fine example
of the city as a bishopric.
Under Islamic control in the Middle Ages, the city began to establish
itself in its current location in the area dominated by the Vila Murada
(The Walled Town). It was during this period of agricultural growth
that a complex irrigation system was introduced. The Christian
Conquest in 1265 expelled the Islamic people and they were forced
to rebuild their community on the outskirts of the Walled Town in
the quarter now known as the Raval de Sant Joan.
In the middle of the 19th Century an important espadrille making
industry emerged –the predecessor of today’s footwear manufacturing- which meant that the city grew in prosperity economically as
well as culturally. On the other hand, the area of The Alicante Exhibition Institution, situated within the Elx Council District, is the perfect
framework for the celebration of professional and international
events such as footwear, auto motion, hotel and catering, leisure
(golf, water sports, etc), property promotions and tourism events.

Monumentos
En la Vila Murada y extramuros las edificaciones de carácter civil y religioso reflejan las diversas etapas de la historia de la ciudad desde la Edad
Media hasta nuestros días.
Del período de dominación árabe la torre fortaleza de La Calahorra es la única que ha subsistido de la antigua muralla. Su origen es del siglo XII, si
bien fue reconstruida en el siglo XIV. Los Baños Árabes - en el Convento de la Mercé, siglo XVI -, importantes vestigios de la muralla en la ladera del
río Vinalopó, la Torre del Homenaje Almohade del Palacio de Altamira y el entramado urbano del casco antiguo de Elche confirman la importancia
de la ciudad desde su fundación.
La arquitectura de la etapa cristiana es la que tiene una mayor representación en la Vila Murada. En ella se alza el Ayuntamiento, cuya puerta de
entrada a la Vila data del 1441, con una lonja gótica y el escudo de armas de la ciudad. Cabe destacar la fachada renacentista y la presencia en la
Torre de la Vela de dos autómatas del siglo XVIII (Calendura y Calendureta).
El Palacio de Altamira o Alcàsser de la Senyoria, del siglo XV, es de planta fortificada y alojó a reyes y nobles. Actualmente, acoge el «Área del
Castillo» del MAHE, Museo Arqueológico y de Historia de Elche.
El Convento de la Merced, de fachada renacentista, conserva los antiguos Baños Árabes, la Iglesia gótica y un claustro del siglo XVIII.
Una de las más bellas construcciones del barroco valenciano es, sin lugar a dudas, la Basílica de Santa María, lugar de representación del Misteri
d’Elx, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.
La hermosa fachada y las puertas del Sol y de San Agatángelo son obras del imaginero Nicolás de Bussi.
También cabe destacar la ermita de San Sebastián, levantada en el siglo XV, donde se encuentra el Museo de la Festa, y junto a la cual se
encuentra el antiguo Hospital de la Caridad, del siglo XIV, actual Casa de la Festa, sede del Misteri d’Elx.
En el Raval de Sant Joan, en el Ayuntamiento del siglo XVII - ya que este barrio tuvo autonomía hasta el siglo XIX - están situados el Museu d’Art
Contemporani, el Museu Paleontològic d’Elx (MUPE) y el Centro Municipal de Exposiciones.
Otros lugares de interés son el centro cultural San José y dos torres vigía: la de Los Vaíllos de Llanos, del siglo XV, con tres bellos arcos góticos, y
la de Ressemblanch, del siglo XVI, de planta cuadrada. La Cruz de Término, de estilo gótico, marcaba los límites de la ciudad.

Monuments
The Vila Murada and the quarters outside the walls, of religious and civil architecture, reflect the diverse eras of the town’s history from the
Middle Ages until today.
The fortified tower of la Calaforra is the only remaining building of the old town walls from the period of Islamic rule. It originates from the 12th
Century, although it was rebuilt in the 14th Century. The Arab Baths, within the Convent of Mercy, dated in the 16th century, some important remains
of the walls on the Vinalopó River slope, the Almohade style Homage Tower in the Palace of Altamira and the town planning of the old streets of
Elx confirm the city’s importance since it was first founded.
The architecture from the Christian period is the most visible in the Vila Murada. Within this, we have the Town Hall, the entrance to which dates
from 1441 with a Gothic style exchange and the coat of arms of the city. We must also point out the Renaissance façade and the Watch Tower with
two 18th century automats chiming the hours and the quarters (Calendura and Calendureta).
The Palace of Altamira or Alcàsser de la Senyoria (the Lord’s Fortress), 15th century, has a fortified plan and has housed kings and the nobility. It is
now the “Castle Area” of the MAHE, the Elx Archaeological and History Museum.
The Convent of Mercy, with a Renaissance façade, keeps the old Arab Baths, a gothic church and an 18th century cloister.
One of the most beautiful buildings of Valencian baroque is, without doubt, the Basílica of Santa María, where the Misteri d’Elx is re-enacted
having been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. The lovely façade, the doors known as the “Sun” and “Saint Agatàngel” are the work of the great
sculptor Nicolás de Bussi.
The chapel of St Sebastian is also worth noting, built in the 15th century and home to the museum dedicated to the Elx Mystery Play, also known
as la Festa. Next to this lies the old Hospital of Charity, dating from the 14th century where there is the Casa de la Festa, the see of the Elx Mystery
Play.
In the Raval de Sant Joan area, within its 17th century Town Hall since this area had its own period of council autonomy until the 19th century; you will
find the Museum of Contemporary Art, Elx’s Museum of Palaeontology (MUPE) and the town’s Exhibition Centre.
Other places of interest include the cultural centre of Sant Josep and two watchtowers known as Vaillo de Llanos dating from the 15th century with
its three beautiful gothic arches, the Ressemblanch from the 16th century, with a square planning. There is also the Town’s Boundary Cross, gothic,
which used to mark the town’s limits.

La Dama de Elche
The “Dama de Elche”
En 1897, los hallazgos de l’Alcúdia dieron a los arqueólogos uno de
sus descubrimientos más importantes, la Dama de Elche (s. V-IV
a.C) obra maestra del arte ibérico. La mayoría de los especialistas
coinciden en que se trata de una sacerdotisa de la diosa local. Cabe
destacar la personalidad de sus facciones y la profundidad de su
expresión.
Esculpido en piedra caliza, este busto de mujer mide 56 cms. y sus
dimensiones corresponden al tamaño natural. Conserva algún resto
de pintura roja, azul y blanca en los labios, el velo y la túnica. Está
tocada con un velo, sostenido por una diadema ancha adornada con
perlas, sujeta por dos grandes rodetes que ocultan sus cabellos
trenzados. Un manto le cubre los hombros y tres lujosos collares
reposan sobre su pecho. Porta amuletos y pequeñas ánforas que
conservan reliquias y recuerdos, completando estas magnificas
joyas de tipo oriental.
De una belleza clásica, el famoso busto es el reflejo de la moda
ibérica de su época.
Pierre Paris, arqueólogo francés, adquirió la estatua tras su
descubrimiento en 1897 y figuró en el seno de las obras ibéricas de
la colección del Louvre hasta 1941.
Actualmente la Dama de Elche se encuentra en el Museo
Arqueológico Nacional de Madrid.
In 1897, findings uncovered at the l’Alcúdia site provided
archaeologists with one of the most important discoveries – that
of the Dama de Elche, dating from the 5th – 4th century BC – a
masterpiece of Iberian art. Most specialists agree that the bust is of
a priestess of the local goddess. It is a deeply expressive piece of
work with outstanding natural features.
Sculpted in limestone, the statue is of a woman measuring 56 cm.,
which would have been her actual size. Some red colour, blue and
white paint remains on the lips of the statue, the veil and the tunic.
It is covered with a veil, held together by a wide tiara encrusted
with pearls, held up by two large buns, which hide her braided hair.
A shawl covers her shoulders and three beautiful necklaces sit
majestically on her chest. She wears bracelets and small amphorae,
which are heirlooms and souvenirs of these magnificent eastern type
jewels.
The famous bust is an example of the Iberian style of the day, quite a
classic beauty.
Pierre Paris, a French archaeologist claimed the statue from the
moment it was discovered in 1897 and it became the ‘centre piece’ of
Iberian works on display in the Louvre’s collection until 1941.
Currently, the Dama de Elche is housed in the National Archaeological
Museum in Madrid.

a convertirse en uno de los principales símbolos
de la ciudad. Así se concibe como un conjunto
enclavado en el propio palmeral en el que el
turista podrá sumergirse en el conocimiento de
su simbolismo histórico-cultural y disfrutar al
mismo tiempo de su singular belleza.
Este recorrido continúa con la visita al propio

The Palm Groves Museum houses the origins,
history, development and culture of the palm
groves making it easier for the visitor to understand why UNESCO awarded this distinction of
World Heritage site to this hugely important site.
It is situated in a traditional house in the centre
of town, the Hort de Sant Plàcid (very near the
Huerto del Cura garden) in a house refurbished
for that purpose. The thematic displays in the
rooms provide an accurate picture of the Palm
Groves’s history, depicting the uses of the palm
tree and how it has evolved to become one of
the key images of the city.
The house and the orchard are within the historic
Palm Groves in which the visitor can get to know
in depth its historic and cultural symbolism –
whilst at the same time – experiencing its unique
beauty.
A visit to the house itself is not complete without
a visit to the external orchard.

como obligan los preceptos coránicos. Los

The Arab Baths in Elx date from the 12th century and although they are not the only ones
in the city, they are the only that have been
preserved. In their day, having Baths available
in a city was a clear indication of economic
well-being and prosperity – in addition to
what they were a personal body purification
facility before prayers – as directed by the
Koran. The Baths were a key feature of the
Moslem world.

El Centre de Visitants es un espacio en el que los
recién llegados a Elx pueden ver un completo
audiovisual sobre la ciudad: historia, tradiciones,
cultura, fiestas y economía.
Tras la proyección de un breve vídeo, los
asistentes tienen la oportunidad de profundizar
en el conocimiento de Elx consultando los
temas de su interés por medio de los soportes
multimedia habilitados. Está ubicado en un
edificio muy singular, de estilo orientalizante,
construido como pabellón principal de la
Feria Industrial de 1946. Una vez acabada la
exposición, el resto de construcciones fueron
derribadas, pero esta fue habilitada primero
como Museo Arqueológico Municipal y,
posteriormente, como Museo de la Palma Blanca
y sala de exposiciones temporales.
The Visitors’ Centre is a place where
visitors who have recently arrived in the
city can experience a complete audiovisual
presentation about the city – its history,
traditions, culture, festivities and economy.
After a short video, visitors have the
opportunity to get to know more about Elx by
reading and having a look around the thematic
items of interest displayed in multimedia
formats. It is located in a very unique building,
of oriental influence, built as a main pavilion
for the Industrial Fair in 1946. Once the Fair
had finished, the rest of the buildings were
demolished but this building was used firstly
as the City’s Archaeological Museum then,
later on, as the Palm Sunday Museum and a
seasonal exhibition centre.

El Espai d’Art d’Elx (Espacio de Arte de
Elche), ubicado en el Passeig de l’Estació, es
una iniciativa fruto de la colaboración entre
el Ajuntament d’Elx y la empresa municipal
PIMESA para recoger una muestra de las
diversas corrientes estéticas de la escultura
contemporánea.
The Espai d’Art d’Elx is situated in the Passeig
de l’Estació, the promenade by the Municipal
Park. This was a partnership initiative between
Elx Town Hall and the council owned company
PIMESA, the aim of which is to show current
differing aesthetic styles in contemporary
sculpture.

A dos kilómetros al sur de la ciudad se encuentra
el yacimiento arqueológico de l’Alcúdia, que
albergó el primitivo núcleo urbano de Elche
desde el Neolítico (5000 aC) hasta el siglo X.

orden, además de ser el lugar donde fue hallada
la Dama de Elche.
En el museo se pueden admirar más de tres mil
piezas representativas de los sucesivos períodos
que a lo largo de seis milenios atravesó este

Two kilometres south of the city is the
archaeological site of l’Alcúdia, site of the original
city of Elx from the Neolithic period (5,000 BC)
until the 10th century AD. It consists of a first
class archaeological site and was where the bust
of the ‘Dama de Elche’ was uncovered.

Gastronomía
De entre el amplísimo repertorio de arroces
de la cocina ilicitana sobresale el sabroso
arròs amb crostra. También son características de estas tierras las pipes i carasses
(asado de bacalao y ñoras), el putxero amb
tarongetes (cocido con pelotas de carne) y
el mújol de la laguna del Fondo, con all i oli.
Para postre, Elche ofrece una variada carta
que va desde el pan de higo, las frutas y los
dátiles de las famosas palmeras, hasta la
tarta de Elche, elaborada con almendras y
azúcar líquido.
Acompañando estos dulces, le recomendamos el conocido Cantueso -licor que se elabora en estas tierras desde 1867 - y el licor
de dátil, de reciente elaboración.
Cuisine
The most outstanding dish of the local Elx
cuisine is, without a doubt, the delicious
arròs amb crostra (rice with a top layer or
omelette crust). Other specialities include
the pipes i carasses (baked codfish and small
sweet red round peppers or nyora), the putxero amb tarongetes (meatball stew) and
the mújol, or grey or striped mullet, from the
el Fondo lagoon, with allioli sauce.
As for desserts Elx offers quite a few possibilities
ranging from pa de figa (fig bread), fruits and dates from its world famous palm trees and the tortada d’Elx (Elx almond cake) with almonds and liquid sugar.
Our recommended traditional liqueurs include the famous Cantueso, elaborated since 1867, and the much more recent date liqueur.

De entre la variedad de fiestas que se celebran en la Comunidad Valenciana, sobresale una por su
originalidad, ambiente y colorido: el Misteri d’Elx.
Representado en la Basílica de Santa María, es un drama sacro-lírico de origen tardo medieval.
La difícil partitura (la Consueta) es interpretada por cantores ilicitanos no profesionales. Está
declarado Monumento Nacional desde 1931, Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional desde 1965,
y recientemente la UNESCO lo ha declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en la categoría de Bienes
Orales e Intangibles el 18 de mayo de 2001. Consta de dos actos: la Vespra y la Festa, celebrados
durante los días 14 y 15 de agosto, respectivamente. En la Oficina de Turismo le informarán
también sobre los ensayos generales de los días 11, 12 y 13 de agosto.
Además del Misteri, son muchas las fiestas que tienen lugar en Elche.

Festivals
Of all of the festivals celebrated throughout the Valencian Community, the one that stands
out for its uniqueness, originality, atmosphere and colour is the Misteri d’Elx.
It is performed in the Basilica de Santa María and is a sacro-lyrical drama from the late
middle Ages. The difficult libretto (known as la Consueta) is interpreted by local amateur
cantors. It was declared a National Monument in 1931, a Fiesta of International Tourist
Interest in 1965 and was recently awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO on the
18th May 2001 as an Oral and Intangible World Heritage of Humanity. It consists of two
main parts: la Vespra and la Festa, which are performed on the 14th and 15th August and
information is available from the Tourist Information Office for the various dress rehearsals
held on the 11th, 12th and 13th that lead up to the actual traditional performances.
In addition to the Misteri d’Elx there are, of course, many other festivities in Elx.
Amongst the festivals of religious significance and origin the following deserve a special
mention. The arrival of Our Lady by sea, with a pilgrimage from the beach on even years.
The Semana Santa Holy Week processions, dating from the 18th century, although the
palm procession dates from the 14th century. This procession was declared a Fiesta of
National Tourist Interest in 1988 and a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest in 1997. The
pilgrimages to Saint Anthony (17th January) and St Crispin (25th October) are inherited
from the ancient mediaeval Elx guilds.
Linked to the origin of the city of Elx, the Festa de Pobladors (Settlers) is celebrated
inspired by the first settlers and civilisations that came to Elx. The Moors and Christian
festival depicts the mediaeval Christian conquest. Both festivals take part within the Patron
Saint’s Fiestas in August.

Beaches
El municipio de Elx, cuenta con una franja litoral de 9 km. de playas de arena blanca, a las
que se les ha dotado con todo tipo de servicios para que los usuarios puedan disfrutar de los
más bellos espacios naturales. Playas de arena fina, exóticos complejos dunares y arenales
semiurbanos, Elx dispone de una variada e interesante oferta litoral.
The town of Elx has a 9 km long shoreline of white sandy beaches, offering all who use them
a range and variety of facilities in a beautiful natural environment. Beaches of fine sand,
exotic dune systems and half urban sandy areas. Elx offers the visitor a varied and interesting
coastline.

· L‘ALTET: La playa de l’Altet conforma uno de los paisajes más singulares de la provincia
puesto que en él se puede observar un complejo funcionamiento de la génesis dunar, lo que
la convierte en un referente único en España. Esta playa, además, se caracteriza por su fina
arena de color blanco que se extiende a lo largo de casi dos kilómetros.
· L’ALTET: The beach of l’Altet is one of the most unique landscapes in the province largely due
to the fact that from here you can see the complexities of the sand dune process: a fact that
makes it a unique reference point in Spain. Furthermore, this beach is well known for its fine
white sands stretching for almost two kilometres.
· ELS ARENALS DEL SOL: Al Noroeste del término municipal de Elche se encuentra la
playa de els Arenals del Sol. En esta playa se pueden encontrar dunas embrionarias, móviles,
semifijas, fijas, e incluso dunas fósiles. Su arena fina y dorada y la gran cantidad de servicios
que ofrece a sus visitantes, entre los que se encuentran el acceso para personas de movilidad
reducida, hacen de éste uno de los arenales más visitados de la zona.
· ELS ARENALS DEL SOL: At the north-eastern corner of Elx council we have the els Arenals
del Sol beach. Embryo, mobile, semi-fixed and fixed dunes, even fossilised dunes, are found
here. Its fine and golden sand and the great amount of services given to its clients, including
access to bathing for the handicapped, make this sand dune area one of the most popular in
the area.
· EL CARABASSÍ: Al pie de la sierra del Carabassí se extiende una playa virgen que lleva el
mismo nombre, formada por dunas actuales, en parte cubiertas de pinos, y dunas fósiles de
gran interés geológico. La cercanía de los saladares y las zonas húmedas de els Bassals y el
Clot de Galvany, permite al visitante disfrutar de la fauna y vegetación autóctona en todo su
esplendor. Considerada como zona de protección ecológica, esta tranquila playa es ideal para
los practicantes de nudismo.
· EL CARABASSÍ: At the foot of the el Carabassí Hills, a virgin beach bears the same name. It
is currently made up of sand dunes, partially covered by pine trees and fossil dunes of great
ecological interest. The visitor can enjoy, in all its splendour, the original fauna and flora due
to the neighbouring saltpans and the els Bassals and Clot de Galvany wetlands. This area has
been classed as a protected nature reserve and this quiet beach is very popular amongst
nudists.

Playas al Sur del Término Municipal

· EL PINET: En el extremo Sur del término municipal de Elx,
sobre una impresionante franja dunar, se alza la playa del Pinet.
Se trata de un extenso pinar que tiene su prolongación natural
por el sur en la costa de Guardamar y en el Parque Natural
de las Salinas de Santa Pola por el norte. A pesar de ser una
playa rústica, ofrece un importante número de servicios para
el visitante.
· EL PINET: El Pinet Beach is situated at the extreme south
of Elx Council District, over an impressive fringe of dunes. It
is an extensive pinewood, which carries on, to the south, in
Guardamar Council District and the Elx-Santa Pola Saltpans
Natural Reserve to the north. Although it very much keeps its
original farmland by-the-sea atmosphere visitors can enjoy the
many services available here.
· LA MARINA: Por la N-332 dirección Alicante-Cartagena
encontramos la playa de la Marina. Es una playa virgen de
arena fina dorada y con azules aguas. La franja dunar en la que
está enclavada su pinada le da una imagen de zona natural y le
confiere un especial interés ecológico.
· LA MARINA: La Marina is on the N-332 National AlicanteCartagena
Road. It is a virgin beach with golden fine sands and blue waters.
It has a special ecological interest since it is a natural zone with
a pinewood covering the long system of dunes.
· LES PESQUERES-EL REBOLLO: Se trata de una playa
virgen, de arena fina en la que se respira respeto por el medio
ambiente. Es un lugar perfecto para quienes deseen disfrutar
del baño en un ambiente natural y sin aglomeraciones.

Deportes
La población ilicitana cuenta con una oferta deportiva múltiple y diversa, cubriendo las necesidades de esparcimiento, ocio y deporte de nuestros
ciudadanos y visitantes.
En cuanto a instalaciones municipales, Elche cuenta con la Ciudad Deportiva de Altabix, una zona de 150.000 m2 de extensión. Dentro de la Ciudad
Deportiva se encuentra el Pabellón Municipal de Deportes Esperanza Lag, con piscina olímpica cubierta y climatizada; así como el rocódromo
municipal, en forma de manos abiertas unidas por las palmas, el cual permite la práctica de la escalada sin salir de la ciudad.
Frente a la Ciudad Deportiva se encuentra la Pista de atletismo, dotada con gradas, y el Polideportivo de Altabix. También enfrente de esta instalación
existe un circuito para
maquetas radiocontroladas.

Both the local Elx
population and visitors have
a wide and diverse range of
sports and leisure facilities available to them.
Town Hall facilities include the Ciutat Esportiva d’Altabix, a complex of some 150,000m2 in size. Inside the sports complex Ciutat Esportiva is the
Town Hall “Esperanza Lag” Sports Pavilion, which houses the indoor Olympic heated swimming pool. Also in Ciutat Esportiva is the Rockodrome, in
the shape of open hands united by their palms, a facility that affords the opportunity to climb without going out of town.
In front of the Ciutat Esportiva is the athletics track, with a tier and the Poliesportiu Altabix. There is also a model and radio controlled circuit facility
opposite.
On the other hand, in other parts of the city centre and in the Elx countryside (Camp d’Elx) there are a range of other sports complexes with outdoor
swimming pools: Parque Deportivo, Polideportivo de los Palmerales, Polideportivo Isabel Fernández in Torrellano, Polideportivo de la Marina in la

Festival Medieval
d’Elx
Desde 1990, cada año, viene celebrándose en Elche el
Festival de Teatre i Música Medieval. Dicho acontecimiento
trata de poner en relación la tradición del Misteri d’Elx con
manifestaciones artísticas de dentro y fuera del país.
En cada edición, la ciudad se ambienta en clave medieval,
a lo que contribuye de forma definitiva, la instalación de un
mercado medieval en las calles del centro histórico. Calles
que, junto a iglesias, palacios y teatro municipal, ofrecen
una pluralidad de escenarios en donde los ilicitanos y los
visitantes pueden asistir a cualquiera de las actividades
programadas.
El festival gira alrededor del Misteri, la más impresionante
manifestación cultural medieval que la fuerza de carácter
de los ilicitanos ha sabido mantener -en alguna ocasión
en contra de circunstancias muy adversas- a lo largo del
tiempo, en su condición de patrimonio cultural de primera
magnitud. Pero incluso siendo su razón de ser el Misteri,
el Festival ha configurado a lo largo de sus anteriores
ediciones una fuerte personalidad propia, muy definida.
Sin duda, el Festival Medieval d’Elx, se ha convertido en un
referente de carácter internacional y en un instrumento para
la difusión de los valores y encantos de nuestra ciudad.
ELX MEDIAEVAL
FESTIVAL
Every year, since 1990, we celebrate the
Mediaeval Festival of Elx. This event tries to
relate the Misteri d’Elx mediaeval tradition with
national and international artistic events.
Every year the city is transformed into a
mediaeval setting with a mediaeval market
being set up along the streets of the historic
centre of the city. The streets together with
the churches, palaces and city theatre offer
a veritable feast of entertainment when both
locals and visitors can get involved in a series
of programmed activities.
The Festival centres on the Misteri d’Elx, the
most important performance of mediaeval
culture that has been retained thanks to the
strength and courage in adversity of the
people of Elx, themselves. This is, doubtlessly,
a cultural heritage of first magnitude.
Even though this Festival was born around the
Misteri d’Elx it has, throughout time, managed to create its own identity and is
now firmly established as a regular event in its own right.
The Mediaeval Festival of Elx has undoubtedly taken on an international element
and has become a means of highlighting the important values and enchantment of
the city of Elx.
Gran Teatre
Gran Teatre
Aquella sala “Kursaal” que abrió sus puertas el 24 de mayo de 1920, con planos
del arquitecto Alfonso Garín y dirección de obra del maestro José Penalva, se
ha transformado en el Gran Teatre de Elche, que se aproxima a las tipologías
teatrales italianas, con una caja en forma de herradura que combina palcos
con anfiteatro. El propietario del edificio es el Ayuntamiento de Elche, y la
gestión del mismo corresponde a la Concejalía de Cultura. La rehabilitación y
acondicionamiento del Gran Teatre se encargó fijando varias ideas clave para
acometer esta obra: cerramiento de la herradura del patio, construyendo
otra planta superior para dar calidad acústica teatral a la sala. Aumento de la
superficie dedicada a escenario, adelantando el proscenio y ampliando el foso
de los músicos para mejorar también la sonoridad del canto y cerramiento
del techo de la sala, envolviendo y embocando el gran plafón existente hasta
conseguir un espacio acogedor, a tono con la tipología tradicional de los teatros
de ópera. La filosofía de esta intervención ha sido la de mantener intacta la
memoria de un pueblo que tiene como uno de sus puntos de referencia histórica,
precisamente, el Gran Teatre de la ciudad.
El día 8 de octubre de 1.997 la Reina Doña Sofía asistió al concierto inaugural
del Gran Teatre de Elche.
The ‘Kursaal’ Hall was opened to the public on the 24th March
1920. The architect Alfonso Garín, under the direction and
supervision of José Penalva, had planned it. This facility has
been transformed into the Gran Teatre of Elx. It is close to Italian
theatrical typologies with a box in the shape of a horseshoe
combining boxes with an amphitheatre. The building is owned
by the Elx Town Hall and is managed by the Town’s Cultural
Councillorship. The refurbishing and conditioning was planned
with several key ideas concerning the works: closing the patio’s
horseshoe, building an additional top floor to improve acoustic
quality in the theatre, increasing the stage area, bringing forward
the stage box and widening the orchestra pit to improve sound,
closing the main room’s ceiling, enclosing and bolting the big
existing soffit to achieve a cosier space, in the style of traditional
opera typology.
The thinking behind all of this work is to keep it in line with the
key objectives and reference points for the city: its memory and
history. And that is exactly what the ‘Gran Teatre” of Elx is.
