On April 15, Mr. Willie Kolb, 8 Grade Social Studies Teacher at Cherokee Middle School, was honored with the
Middle School Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award for his
21 years of service in the Madison Metropolitan School District.
This award was presented by Superintendent Elizabeth
Cheatham at a special meeting of Madison's school board. We
especially thank Mr. Kolb for all he has done for the students of
Cherokee Heights Middle School.

History Bowl Challenge
Cherokee’s African-American History Bowl Challenge team competed in The City wide event on Saturday,
April 13 at the Doyle Administration Building.
The 100 Black Men of Madison African-American History Challenge Bowl is an educational program designed
to enhance the study of African American history. The Challenge
Bowl is open to all Madison area students with the goal to
encourage pride, self-worth and an appreciation of the African
American legacy and culture. Students met once a week, under
the direction of Ms. Cohen and Ms. Hollander, from January
through April to read and learn African American history.

Competencia En Historia
El Equipo de Afro-América Competencia de Historia compitió en
el evento de toda la ciudad el sábado, 13 de abril en el Edificio
Administrativo de Doyle.
La competencia de Afro-American de los 100 Hombres Negros (100 Black Men por su sigla en inglés) de Madison
es un programa educativo diseñado para mejorar el estudio de la historia afroamericana. La competencia está
abierta para todos los estudiantes del área de Madison con el objetivo de fomentar el orgullo, la autoestima y el

Cherokee Art Display
7th grade Cherokee students will be having their artwork on display at the Sequoia
Library on Friday May 17th till mid June 2013. Many of their photographs from the
Pinhole Camera project will be up. This project was funded in part by the Cherokee
PTO, Madison Foundation for Public Schools, and an Equitable Arts Access Grant.
There will be an opening reception from 4:00 – 5:30 pm for the public and visiting
artist, Rosita Gonzalez will be there to discuss the project. All people are welcome to
attend and view the work.
Cherokee Exhibición de Arte
Los estudiantes de séptimo grados van a tener sus obras de arte en exhibición en la Biblioteca de Sequoia el
viernes 17, de mayo hasta mediado de junio 2013. Muchas de sus fotografías del proyecto Pinhole Cámara
estarán en exhibición. Este proyecto fue financiado en parte por la Organización de Padres e Maestros (PTO por
su sigla en inglés) de Cherokee, La Fundación de Bibliotecas Públicas de Madison, y La Beca de Equitable Arts
Access. Habrá una recepción de 4:00 pm a 5:30 pm para el público y los artistas visitante, Rosita González estará

Science Symposium
On the morning of April 25, 2013, fourteen Cherokee Middle School students presented science research projects
at the Third Annual Madison Metropolitan Middle School Science Symposium at the Discovery Center on the UW
campus. The fourteen students represent nine different projects; each project was designed and executed by
students under the direction of a science mentor-expert. Students presented to and discussed their research result
with other scientist students.

Simposio de Ciencia
En la mañana del 25 de abril de 2013, catorce estudiantes de la Escuela
Intermedia de Cherokee presentaron sus proyectos de investigación científica en
la Tercera Simposio de Ciencia anual Metropolitano de las Escuelas de Madison
en el Centro de Descubrimiento (Discovery Center por sus siglas en inglés) del
campus de UW. Los catorce estudiantes representaron nueve proyectos
diferentes, cada proyecto fue diseñado y ejecutado por los estudiantes bajo la

Percy Jackson and The Lightening Thief Party Planned!
Laura Holt, librarian, and Betsy Hambrick, School Social Worker, are planning another book party!! This one is
about the book, The Lightening Thief", by Rick Riordan. The party will be Tuesday, May 14th after school in the
library. Students will have to have read the book and answer some questions about the book to be eligible to sign
up for the party. Those who attend the party will be divided into teams related to the characters in the book. Lots
of games and fun for all! So, be reading the book, studying Greek mythology, and figuring out how to wrap your
toga!
İPercy Jackson y El Rayo Ladrón Planifiador de Fiestas!
¡Laura Holt, la bibliotecaria, y Betsy Hambrick, trabajadora social de la escuela, están planificando una fiesta de

Latino Youth Summit

10 Cherokee students attended the third annual Latino Youth Summit, which took place on March 27 and 28 at the
Wisconsin Institute for Discovery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The theme for the conference was “on
my way to college.” The two-day conference provided cultural explorations and courses to prepare students for
college.
Students participated in many hands-on workshops. Some workshops focused on cultural aspects as they relate
to college. The workshops included cultural identity and youth, how Brown and Black communities can work
together, restorative justice, and Alianza Latina. Other workshops focused on environmental studies and careers.
We had workshops that focused on living green, recycling, and plant pathology. Other workshops focused on
learning styles and movement. We also had workshops on
break dancing and graphic design. All the workshops
addressed various college careers and pathways to college.
Cumbre de Jóvenes Latinos

Diez estudiantes de Cherokee asintieron a la tercera Cumbre
anual de la Juventud Latina (Latino Youth Summit por sus
siglas en inglés), que tomo lugar el 27 y 28 de marzo en el
Instituto de descubrimiento de Wisconsin en la Universidad de
Madison-Wisconsin. El tema de la conferencia fue “En camino a
la universidad”. La conferencia de dos días les proporciono exploración cultural y cursos para prepararlos para la
universidad.
Los estudiantes participaron en muchos talleres interactivos. Algunos talleres se centraron en los aspectos
culturales en su relación con la universidad. Los talleres incluyeron la identidad cultural y la juventud, como las
comunidades de color pueden trabajar juntas, para restaurar la justicia, y Alianza Latina. Otros talleres se

On April 8 , Cherokee was awarded two grants by the organization “By Youth For Youth” which is sponsored by
the United Way of Dane County, Dane County Youth Commission, City of Madison Community Development
Division and Oscar Mayer/Kraft Foods. By Youth For Youth provides youth the opportunity to identify needs and
issues that are important to them and then help channel funding to address those needs. One grant called CAR –
Chillin Activities to Regulate was written by a group of students and supported by Elizabeth Hardy and Karin
Strickon. It was designed to provide materials and activities for
a sensory room at Cherokee. It also included a plan of having
students already familiar with using sensory strategies to teach
staff and other students those skills and show that selfregulatory strategies can help people manage stress, decrease
inappropriate behaviors and prevent loss of learning as well as
forge healthy patterns to be carried into adult life and the

community at large. Adam Dorhn, in 7 grade, graciously
accepted our grant award.

By Youth For Youth - CAR
El 8 de abril, la escuela Cherokee recibió dos becas por la organización “Por Jóvenes Para Jóvenes” (By Youth
For Youth por sus siglas en ingles), la cual es patrocinada por United Way del Condado de Dane, La Comisión de
la Juventud del Condado de Dane, La División de Desarrollo de la Comunidad de La Ciudad de Madison y Oscar
Mayer / Kraft Foods. El programa Por Jóvenes Para Jóvenes les ofrece a los jóvenes la oportunidad de identificar
las necesidades y problemas que son importantes para ellos y ayúdales a encontrar fondos para hacer frente a
esas necesidades. Una beca llamada Actividades de Regulación CAR-Chillin fue escrita por un grupo de
estudiantes con el apoyo de Elizabeth Hardy y Karin Stickon. La cual fue diseñada para proporcionar materiales y
actividades para un salón sensorial en Cherokee. También incluido en el plan los estudiantes que están
familiarizados con el uso de estrategias sensoriales enseñaran al personal y a otros estudiantes esos
conocimientos y demostrarles las estrategias de autorregulación que pueden ayudar a las personas a manejar su
estrés, disminuir los comportamientos inapropiados y evitar la pérdida de aprendizaje, así como fabricar patrones

By Youth For Youth - Si Puedes (You Can)
A second grant given out on April 8 aims to provide a dual pathway for parents and students. Students volunteer
to be part of Si Puedes, as well as, their parents. There are three phases: (1) Student are connected to outside
programs that will provide them new experiences for them to rethink about their education and explore how they
would like to make a contribution to their community, (2) Parents and students become a supportive network to
connect with their school and community by having monthly meetings and exploring their needs and their
strengths, and (3) Parents and students identify celebrations
that may be presented as a school-wide cultural event. One
event is the celebration of the Cinco de Mayo.
Cherokee will have their Cinco de May Celebration May 1 from
6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Students will perform a special presentation of
the Mariachi at 6:00 p.m. and enjoy food as part of the
celebration.

Puedes
Una segunda beca fue concedida el 8 de abril la cual tiene como objetivo proporcionar una doble vía para los
padres y estudiantes. Los estudiantes voluntarios, así como los padres tomaron parte de Si Puedes. Hay tres
fases: (1) El estudiante se conectan a programas externos que les proporciona nuevas experiencias para que
puedan reflexionar sobre su educación y estudiar la forma en que les gustaría hacer una contribución a su
comunidad, (2) Los padres y los estudiantes se convierten en una red de apoyo para conectarse con su escuela y
comunidad teniendo reuniones mensuales y explorando sus necesidades y sus puntos fuertes, y (3) Los padres y
los estudiantes identifican celebraciones que se pueden presentar como un evento cultural para toda la escuela.
Un evento es la celebración del Cinco de Mayo.
Cherokee tendrá su Celebración de Cinco de Mayo 1, de mayo de 6:00-8:00 p.m. Los estudiantes realizarán una
presentación especial de Mariachi a las 6:00 pm y disfrutar de la comida como parte de la celebración.

FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVERS QUALIFY FOR STATE BOWL
The Cherokee 8th grade team of Nora Ghandhi, Chloe Robinson and Claire and Allie Chandler qualified for the
Future Problem Solvers (FPS) State Bowl held April 11-13 in Green Lake.
The topic: Ocean Soup - a serious problem caused by plastic debris in the ocean that is slow to degrade and
breaks into small pieces that create a "soup" of microplastics.
The future scene presented to the problem solvers: A floating science laboratory off the coast of Hawaii in 2035 is
struggling to clean up the large amount of microplastic debris
that is harming ocean life.
The challenge: Identify the issues, propose solutions and
develop an action plan to address a major problem affecting
the floating laboratory as it tries to clean up ocean soup.
The team has used research and problem-solving skills
throughout the year on the following FPS topics: celebrity
culture, robotic age and megacities.
LOS FUTUROS SOLUCIONADORES DE
PROBLEMAS CALIFICAN PARA LA COMPETENCIA ESTATAL
El equipo de octavo grado de Cherokee Nora Ghandhi, Chloe Robinson, Claire and Allie Chandler clasificaron
para los futuros solucionadores de problemas (FPS por su sigla en inglés) en la competencia estatal celebrada
del 11al 13 de abril en Green Lake.
El tema: Sopa del Océano (Ocean Soup por su sigla en inglés) – es un problema grave causado por los desechos
plásticos en el mar que tarda en degradarse y se rompe en pequeños pedazos que crean una "sopa" de microplásticos.
La escena futura presentada a los solucionadores de problemas fue: un laboratorio flotante de ciencia en la costa
de Hawaii en el 2035 que está luchando para limpiar grandes cantidad de restos micro-plástico dañando la vida
marina.
El reto: Identificar los problemas, proponer soluciones y desarrollar un plan de acción para hacer frente a un
problema importante que afecta el laboratorio flotante mientras trata de limpiar la sopa del océano.
El equipo ha utilizado las investigaciones y habilidades de resolución de problema durante todo el año en los
siguientes temas de FPS: Celebridad de cultura, la edad robótica y megalópolis.

From the Nurse’s Office
Medications (year-end): Parents/Guardians…if your child has pills, epi-pens or other medical supplies
at school, please pick them up during the last week of school. We do not send pills home with students.
Prescription medications will be disposed of if not picked up. Call the health office at 204-1262 if you
need assistance with this.
Medication Disposal: Unwanted or unused prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines can be
found in every household. It is not safe to flush them down the toilet or to put them in the trash. Dane
County Med Drop is a program where you can take any unused medication for safe disposal. Refer to
the following website for more information: http://www.meddropdane.org/.
Immunizations: Please continue to update your child’s shots over the summer. Bring the dates of the
shots to registration in the fall…clinics do NOT notify us when your child has had an immunization.
Healthy tips for the summer:
Apply sunscreen when outdoors (SPF of 15 or higher)
Take time DAILY to get outside and be active
Wear helmets when biking, skate boarding, or riding a scooter
Swim safely in places with lifeguards
Make sure everyone in the car is wearing a seatbelt
Have fun.

Give a Kid a Smile
A big THANK YOU to Dr. Tipple and his staff at Nakoma Dental. Every year, Dr. Tipple and his staff see
Cherokee Middle School students who are uninsured and in need of dental care. This is part of the "Give a Kid a
Smile" program. We have been so very fortunate to receive outstanding care for students in need here at
Cherokee. If you happen to be in Dr. Tipple's office, join me (Elly Chybowski, nurse) in thanking all the staff.

Un gran agradecimiento al Doctor Tripple y su personal en Nakoma Dental. Cada año, el Doctor Tipple y su

Summer School Enrollment Deadline is May 7th!
It is that time of year to start preparing for summer school! Enrollment for Summer School began on April 20th.
This year, the enrollment must be done on computer. There is an Open Computer Lab at the Doyle Administrative
Building, 545 W. Dayton St (next to the Kohl Center) for Parents/Guardians that do not have access to the internet
or need assistance in registering their child. In addition, any elementary school can provide assistance to families
needing to enroll on-line that do not have computer access.

Nighttime Drama: Goodbye
June 3, 2013, 6:30 p.m. Overture’s Rotunda Stage
All Friends of Drama Are Encouraged to Come: Students and Parents and Staff Alike!
This is LORI HAMANN’S final production directing Nighttime Drama for Cherokee Heights Middle
School. Dr. Hamann joined Cherokee’s faculty in 1985 teaching seventh grade science and math.
Staying in that position for three years, Lori then moved to eighth grade English/language arts teaching
in that position for ten years. In that time, Lori and colleague, Loree Schultz, developed a writing
program which they used at Cherokee and which they “took on the road” throughout the state of
Wisconsin working with UW-Madison’s Wisconsin Writing Project. They trained colleagues in 14 school
districts throughout the state, including Madison, as to how to individualize to teach writing, grades 4-12.
From there, Lori moved back to seventh grade, this time to teach English/language arts, social studies
and reading, writing and research skills At Cherokee.
Ms. Seno, our former principal, tapped Hamann to develop and teach a new drama program.
Surprised, but ready for a new challenge, Lori embraced the opportunity. After a summer of study, Lori
experimented and tried all different theater approaches to see what worked best with Cherokee
students. After two years, Nighttime Drama was birthed. Lori stated to Ms. Seno, “I cannot keep
parents and the entire community from seeing what I see every day: it is just too exciting; I cannot
withhold the hard work, dedication and incredible talent Cherokee students exhibit in the area of drama.”
Over many years, Hamann added a sound system to the Program and a stage to her classroom to lend
authenticity and anticipation to the preparation of Nighttime Drama. At first, students were reluctant to
“go live and public” with their talents, but for many years Nighttime Drama has taken on a life of its own.
Students work hard for the opportunity to be part of the Program, many having observed older siblings
take to the stage during their middle school years. Some of Lori’s first students are now in theater
programs at Loyola, Julliard and other schools throughout the country, sometimes visiting Cherokee to
give a hug and a thank you for the school and the teacher who first ignited their interest in the area of
theater. Hamann is grateful and honored to have had the opportunity to serve Cherokee’s families.
Let’s celebrate 13 years of Cherokee’s Drama Program, an auspicious number to be sure, and this the
40th Nighttime Drama! Way to go, Cherokee!
Drama Nocturno: ADIÓS

Todos los amigos de drama son animados a que vengan: ¡Estudiantes y Padres y Personal por igual!
Esta es la última producción de Drama Nocturno de la Escuela Intermedia de Cherokee dirigida por
LORI HAMANN. La Dr. HAMMAN se unió a la facultad de Cherokee en el 1985 como maestra de
ciencia y matemáticas de séptimo grado. Ella permaneció en esa posición por tres años, después Lori
se traslado a octavo grado a enseñar Inglés / Literatura y permaneció en esa posición durante diez
años. En ese transcurso de tiempo Lori y su colega, Loree Schultz, desarrollaron un programa de
escritura el cual usan en Cherokee y lo “llevaron en el camino” por todo el estado de Wisconsin,

de individualizar la enseñanza de escritura, en grados del 4 al 12. A partir de ahí, Lori se trasladó de
nuevo a séptimo grado, esta vez para enseñar Inglés / Literatura, estudio sociales y lectura, escritura y
habilidades de investigación en Cherokee. La Sra. Seno, nuestra ex directora, animo a Hamann a
desarrollar y enseñar el nuevo programa de drama. Sorprendida, pero lista para el nuevo desafío, Lori
aprovecho la oportunidad. Después de un verano de estudio, Lori experimento y trato todos los

Notes from the Cherokee Music Department
Where has the time gone?! It’s hard to believe we’re already getting ready for our spring concert season. Your
students have been hard at work in Band, Choir, and Orchestra classes preparing some wonderful songs to
perform for you at the spring concerts. Please mark your calendars now and make every effort to help your child
attend and perform. Attendance at concerts is required of music students.
All concerts are held in the Cherokee gym, they begin at 7:00PM and last approximately one hour. We ask that
parents and families attend with students so that you may take your student home promptly after the concert.
We are also in need of students to help set up the gym for concerts. Students who are able to help with set-up
should let their music teacher know and plan to help from approximately 2:45-3:30 on the day before the
concert. Please note that percussion students are expected to help set up for their concert.

to students in need of them. Many sizes are available. Whenever possible, students should consider this
a “dress up” event. No jeans, tee shirts, sweat pants, or athletic pants.

-All students must quietly and carefully walk out of the gym in a single file line
-DO NOT PLAY or SING at this time-the concert is over
-Carefully put instruments and music away in cases and on shelves
-ALL STUDENTS MUST HELP WITH CLEAN UP

PARENT HELP NEEDED
The 8th Grade Farewell Committee needs 6th and 7th grade parents to help with setup of the 8th Grade
Farewell parent reception. Those interested in helping plan the 8th Grade Farewell ceremony and
celebration, or donating money to support the festivities, are also sought. If you can volunteer or
make/secure a donation, please contact Andrea Nilsen ([email protected]) for details.
The Committee will soon kick off a campaign to raise funds for the 8th grade farewell events. Please

Parents of 8 grade students will receive additional information from Principal Watkins sometime in May. In
the meantime, Assistant Principal Rick Reynolds will be meeting with each 8th grade homeroom to go over
the details of the event. These meetings with take place in the second and third week of May.

This year the format for the 8 grade farewell will be different from previous years. We will be conducting the
farewell during the school day with the ceremony taking place from 10:30 am to 11:30 am on Wednesday, June 12
at Cherokee. Due to significant seating limits, we will continue the practice of only allowing TWO guests per
student. Guests will receive tickets for the event at Cherokee on the day of the event. A brief reception for staff,
students, and parents will follow the ceremony. Parents will then be excused and the students and staff will have a
lunch followed by a student dance. The student only dance will last until the normal dismissal time of 2:37 pm and

March: Student Council sponsored Spirit Week on March 18-22, the week
before spring break. Students and staff were encouraged to join in the fun
by dressing up to reflect each day’s theme. The judging committee,
comprised of Mr. Tran, Ms. Kadakia, and Ms. Holt, had the next to
impossible task of choosing the students with the best costumes. Here are
the results:

Special spirit awards went to two students who rocked their
costumes all five days: Abby S. and Emma P.
April: Student Council representatives acknowledged Earth
Day by asking their teachers and classmates to commit to one
concrete action to save energy, conserve resources, and
become better stewards of our environment. For example,
students pledged to take shorter showers, print on both sides of
the paper, and unplug chargers when not
in use. They wrote their pledges on blue or green sticky notes, which 8th graders
Lacy Piper and Maddy Friedman used to assemble a large earth on the front
window. Student Council efforts to reduce Cherokee’s energy consumption will
intensify in May as the “Power Patrol” visits classrooms to talk about small but
important steps to save energy.
May: Ms. Chybowski’s student nurse taught Student Council reps a series of
exercises in preparation for Shape-Up Cherokee on May 13. Reps will be
responsible for teaching the exercises to their classmates the week of May 6-10.
We’ve had a wonderful year with Student Council. We couldn’t ask for a livelier,
more committed group of students, and it’s been a joy working with them and watching their leadership
skills grow. We’ll celebrate our year together sometime in June, date to be announced, with a picnic.

Help Your Student Beat the Summer Reading Slump
The summer reading slump (also called the slide) is the deterioration of a student’s reading skills over the summer
months. The slump and how to prevent it have been hot topics among reading experts. Not surprisingly, their
studies suggest that less access to books and less time spent reading are factors in the loss of reading
achievement during the months away from school. Harvard’s Dr. Jimmy S. Kim recommends that students read at
least four to five books over the summer to maintain their end-of-the-school-year
reading levels.
There are several ways you can fight the slump:

Encourage your student to take time for reading. Like any skill, reading
gets better with practice and rusty with disuse.
Model reading. Students who see adults reading on a regular basis tend to
have higher reading scores than those who don’t.
Read together. I’ll have summer reading lists available at the end of May and
will include a section on books for families to enjoy together.
Take advantage of our great public libraries. Madison Public Library and Fitchburg Public Library have
fantastic summer reading programs and activities. Public libraries are free, air-conditioned, and have loads to
offer in addition to books. Goodman South Madison Library, for example, has Animation Creation workshops
for teens with hands-on opportunities to use animation tools and computer software. Librarians from
Fitchburg and Madison public libraries will be visiting Cherokee the last full week of June to promote their
summer reading programs.
Share books with others. If you have high-interest books in good condition gathering dust at home, please
consider donating them for a book swap. It will take place the last full week of school. Our goal is to make
sure every student has books for summer reading.

Ayude A Su Hijo/A A Batir La Recaída De Lectura Este Verano

Cherokee Dominates the District Battle of the Books
Forty-eight Cherokee students participated in this year’s Battle
of the Books competition. Students formed teams of up to four
members who were responsible for reading books from a
designated list of 12-15 titles. Each grade level had a different
reading list ranging from contemporary favorites like Cynthia
Lord’s Rules to classics like Mark Twain’s The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer. Each student on a team is typically responsible
for 3-4 titles, though some strategic teams made sure every
book was read by two team members. During the competition,
students answered questions about the books and identified
titles and authors. The winning teams at each grade level
represented Cherokee at the district meets.
6th Grade Team
The dynamite sixth grade team of Kevin Boutelle,
Sam Bright, Erik Nuenninghoff, and Jerrett Smith
survived a hazardous trip across town in a snowstorm
to take second place at the 6th grade meet at
Whitehorse Middle School. Returning champs Molly
Jetzer and Andrey Vorontsov joined forces with Kira
Schukar and Evan Schumacher to coolly and
confidently take first place honors at the 7th grade
district meet at Sherman Middle School.
A special shout-out goes to the team of Allie
Chandler, Claire Chandler, Emma Mickelson, and
Chloe Robinson. I had a feeling it was their year to win, and they

proved me right by decisively winning the 8th grade district
Battle, held here at Cherokee. This team has been together for all
three years of middle school; they exemplify dedication, positive attitudes, and gracious sportsmanship.
I couldn’t be prouder to have them represent Cherokee.
I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: everyone who participates in Battle of the Books wins. The
trophies look great, but what matters most is that students discover new authors and genres, practice
reading with care and understanding, and celebrate being a part of a larger community of readers.

Report Card Criteria for Promotion to 9th Grade
Many parents may not realize that the grades a student earns in BOTH 7th and 8th grade count toward
9th grade promotion. In order to be promoted to 9th grade, a student must earn at least a 1.67
cumulative grade point average (GPA) during 7th AND 8th grade in EACH ONE for the four core
academic areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. (The Report Card
Standards)
To calculate a GPA, each grade is assigned a point value.
An “A” is worth 4 points; a “U” is worth 0 points.

pass to 9th grade with a GPA of 2.00. However, getting 4 “C’s” and 4 “D’s” in these classes, the student
would NOT pass because the GPA would be 1.50.
Any combination of grades in one subject that does not total a 1.67 GPA or higher will result in
the student NOT being promoted to 9th grade. A student must achieve the 1.67 GPA or higher in
EACH of the four academic areas. High grades in one subject CANNOT offset low grades in another to
achieve a 1.67 average between the two subjects. The WKCE test results for the four core class areas
are also considered in the determination of promotion to 9th grade.
Students who do not meet the Report Card Standards must pass a district approved summer
school program in order to be promoted to 9th grade. Students who do not meet the Report Card
Standards and do not attend and pass summer school, will remain in 8th grade in their school of
residence or attend the district-wide non-promotion program (AERO) until they meet the
standards to move to 9th grade.

Middle School Science Demonstrations
May 4th, 10am-noon
The Middle School Science Cohort is a group of twelve 7th & 8th graders who applied and were
selected to be a part of a highly advanced science research group. This group began work in
December and will culminate their work with a public presentation on the specific proteins involved in
stem cell research.
Please join them as they present their findings at the Science Saturday taking place at the Wisconsin
Institutes for Discovery building, 330 N. Orchard St., on May 4th from 10am-12pm.
This program is made possible by a partnership between the Talented & Gifted Department of Madison
Metropolitan School District, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, and the Morgridge Institute for
Research.

This is the last update of this academic year from the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). We
hope it has been a productive and satisfying school year for you and your student(s).

and dedication to Cherokee. So that we can continue planning and organizing events, activities,
and fundraisers to support and enrich the entire Cherokee community, we are looking to fill their

PTO Committee Chairs Named, Sought
Please consider getting involved with a Cherokee committee next year! A committee role is a great
opportunity to make a real contribution to the Cherokee community.
Are you interested in helping shape the future of Cherokee’s new Recreation Area? The PTO will
be contributing funds to an upgrade and expansion of the Cherokee playground, garden, and
blacktop area. The PTO is looking to identify a Recreation Area Upgrade Liaison for 2013-14.
This person will track the discussions and progress with school and district administration,
identifying opportunities for student and PTO input and involvement.
The Cherokee Directory Chair is open for the 2013-14 school year. It is easily chaired by one
person, but can also be shared by co-chairs. The Directory Chair(s) compile Cherokee
student/family contact information for distribution to Cherokee families.

West High PTSO Welcomes New Parents
If you are an 8th grade parent with a student moving on to West High School, we will miss you at
Cherokee and wish you a smooth transition! To that end, there are new opportunities to get
involved in your child’s education through the West High Parent Teacher Student Organization
(PTSO). The PTSO is an active organization whose purpose is to bring the diverse school
community together.
Being involved in the PTSO provides a great way to get acquainted with the school, staff, and
students at West. It also offers opportunities to give input about ongoing activities, projects, and
events at the school.
The West PTSO’s biggest and most immediate volunteer need is Enrollment, which takes place
over two days at the end of August. Each year, the PTSO fills more than 100 parent volunteer
positions totaling more than 350 volunteer hours, to keep the enrollment process running smoothly
for everyone.

Parents are welcome to attend PTO Board meetings and get involved! The open positions of Vice

present great opportunities to have an impact on PTO projects.
There is only one more PTO Board meeting of the school year! Interested parents are welcome to
attend on Wednesday, May 8th, 2013, at 6:30pm in the Cherokee LMC.
May 18: Spring Grounds Clean-up
Please plan to join our volunteer crew Saturday, May 18, 9-11am, for the annual spring grounds
clean-up. Feel free to send your kids alone – though parental help is ALWAYS welcomed! It’s
helpful for volunteers to bring a rake, shovel, work gloves, etc. We’re also looking for donations of
annuals, bags of mulch and perennials.
Can’t make it? We’re also looking for people who can make muffins, bread, etc. and/or send drinks
for our hungry workers.

Cherokee staff say goodbye to Paul Cerutti
Head custodian Paul Cerutti's last day at Cherokee was April 12. To send him off to Toki in style,
Cherokee staff dressed like Paul for the day: flannel shirts, neatly rolled at the elbow, cargo pants,
work gloves, and dark-rimmed glasses. We assembled in the LMC before school and lured Paul in
with a complaint about the heating. He's in the center of the picture, surrounded by look-alikes. See
if you can spot the seven staff members who were photoshopped in!
