As human beings, we have emotions and feelings. Doubt is a human emotion like others such as anger, happiness, sadness, and disgust. The saints were human beings. They had doubts like anyone of us, especially on their spiritual journeys. Two thousand years ago, Thomas doubted. Recently, Mother Teresa spent fifty years struggling with her doubt and faith. Through her letters in the book “Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light,” she described the dryness, the loneliness, the emptiness, and the darkness of her religious experience. Doubt is a part of our human condition. The saints have doubts and so do we. It is interesting to see how Jesus reacted to Thomas’ doubt in this Gospel passage. Jesus did not reproach Thomas. First of all, Jesus greeted all of those who were present in the room with peace including Thomas. Jesus forgave Thomas before he admitted his doubt. Then, Jesus gently invited Thomas to approach Him and to touch Him. Somehow, Thomas represented all those who have doubts. God does not force us to believe in Him. God respects our freedom and our human nature. God just wants to show us the way to come to Him, the way to enter into the relationship with Him. God knows about our emotions and our doubts. God accepts us as who we are. God loves us before we love Him. Love is not a feeling. Love includes acceptance, forgiveness, trust, hope, and commitment. Thomas had doubt but, after seeing the risen Jesus and recognizing Jesus’ love, Thomas opened his heart to Jesus and let Jesus transform him. Thomas was touched by God’s love. For Thomas, doubt was a part of the growth in relationship with God, a growth in trust, a growth in holiness, and a growth in love. His love for Jesus became mature when he declared that Jesus was his Lord and his God. By saying that, he believed in God’s forgiveness. He really believed that God’s love and mercy could change his whole life. Today is also the feast of Divine Mercy. Celebrating God’s mercy is a celebration of faith and of hope. We know that we cannot love God and love one another by our own power. Our hearts must connect to Jesus’ heart, the source of love. Jesus is always inviting us to touch Him through the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. If we open our hearts to Jesus, we might recognize His love and His mercy like Thomas did. Our faith starts to grow at the point where we have doubts and where we feel the most powerless. Fr. Tino Family Mass: Our Family Mass will be held next Sunday, April 22, at 11:15 am in the Community Life Center. All parishioners are invited to attend, but especially those with young children. Jesús no reprochó a Tomás. Entonces, Jesús amablemente invitó a Tomás a acercarse a Él y a tocarle.
