April 24, 2016 Fifth Sunday of Easter 1883-2016 . . . . . . . . Good Shepherd, Your love for .. . . us never ceases. Even in the . . . . face of death, Your love laid . . . down its life for us. . . . . . Thank You for never . . . abandoning us, even when we . . . may wander away. May we . . . never be so distracted that we . . . do not recognize Your call for .. . . us. Amen . . . Prayer for the Fifth Sunday of Easter Pastor: Reverend G. Just last Sunday we heard in the Book of Revelation how those who worship before God’s throne “will not hunger or thirst anymore. . . . and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” This week the same book has a similar message: For human beings, “God will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain.” These passages say that in life with God human suffering will pass away and God will provide for the whole person, spiritually, bodily, emotionally. Do you feel that God speaks to every part of you, not only your “spiritual” side? How does God do that? WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE, & WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH. ST. JOSEPH’S PAGE TWO . . . . . . . FROM THE PASTOR . . . . . . . My Dear Parish Family, . . . . I am so happy that so many of you came out to see Donovan . Catholic’s magnificent production of Fiddler on the Roof last . weekend. As you know, over and over again I comment to you .. . and others how proud I am of our young people – in our reli. . gious education program, Saint Joseph Grade School and Do. novan Catholic. Just when I think I’ve seen it all, they blow me .. . away with another good deed, a fantastic show of sportsman. . ship or, in this most recent case, a “Broadway” caliber perfor. . mance of a classic. I offer my congratulations and gratitude to . the cast and crew, audience members and the directors, musi. . cians and volunteers for offering such a wonderful perfor. . mance. I am so proud of you all. . . . . I hope you have noticed the front page of our bulletin, on . which we have now listed telephone extensions for the staff . . personnel listed. I know that many of you have complained . . about our current phone system and not being able to get . . through to someone when you call. I hope this will alleviate . . any problems. . . . Today, we hear the beautiful, loving words from Jesus to his . . disciples, as he says, “My children, I will be with you only a . . little while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one . . another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one an. . other. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if . . you have love for one another.” JN 13:34-35 This words are . . addressed to us as well. Over and over again it is so important . for each of us to re-examine how we love. Do we love as . . Christ loves us? Or do we set up other guidelines and parame. . ters? Do we rationalize our impatience with or our judgments . on others? Do we speak hurtfully before we even think of what .. . we are saying? If I am honest with myself, I know that I fail . . miserably at times in this area. It is then that I realize, most . . clearly, that I am in need of God’s forgiveness and grace. . . . This spring, as we see the new life around us in nature let us . recall, the words of the ‘One who sits on the throne’, “Behold I .. . make all things new” RV 21:5a. Let us allow God to do what . he does best with us, i.e., He forgives and restores us so that we .. . are made new to go and be his disciples in the world. . . . God bless you all, . . . Fr. Scott . A Mass of Thanksgiving Celebrating the Closure of the EXCERPT FROM “MERCY AND TRUTH SHALL MEET” BISHOP DAVID M. O’CONNELL, C.M. How do we in the Church show mercy? The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) reminds us of the long-standing practice of mercy in Christian tradition: the spiritual and corporal works of mercy: The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising, consoling, comforting are spiritual works of mercy, as are forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently. The corporal works of mercy consist especially in feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead. Among all these, giving alms to the poor is one of the chief witnesses to fraternal charity: it is also a work of justice pleasing to God (CCC, 2447). These are good, practical embodiments of what Holy Year of Mercy encourages us to consider. Abortion Clinic on Route 37 will be offered on Saturday, April 30 Noon Mass at St. Joseph’s Church All are welcome. If you would also like to join us and celebrate after Mass, we will be going to Fortune Buffet for lunch (Dutch treat). PAGE SEVEN ST.
