“Financial Aid 101”
s you begin researching
colleges and programs
of study, you – every
parent and student –
also need to complete
Financial Aid 101.

The average annual cost
for tuition and fees for a
student enrolled full time at a
community college (the choice
for 43 percent of all college
students) is less than $2,000.
In sheer numbers,
financial aid myths
probably rival those of
the Loch Ness Monster
and Bigfoot… and they all rate
about the same on the Truth Meter.
So before you narrow your college
choices based on the assumption that
you’re not eligible for financial aid,
let’s begin Financial Aid 101 with a
few statistics:
“Believe it or not, financial aid
is available for almost all college
students,” said Anthony Berry,
associate director of financial aid at
San Jacinto College.

In Fall 2008, 40 percent of
San Jacinto College students
that applied for financial aid
received financial aid.
t
Over 80 percent received money
from the Federal Pell Grant
Program based upon their
need.
According to Berry, many students
don’t apply for financial aid
because they assume they’re not
eligible. Those students end up
missing out on valuable financial
assistance available through
private scholarships, institutional
scholarships, federal and state
grants and student loans.

For the 2008-09 academic
year, Pell Grant aid averaged
almost $2,600 per San Jacinto
College student, while the
average amount of financial aid
disbursed per student was over
$3,500.
t
San Jacinto College disbursed
more than $22 million in
financial aid for the 2008-09
academic year.
Feel better? Great! Now, before we
proceed, it’s important that you
memorize these three financial aid
words of advice: “Don’t assume;
apply!”
“Just because your parents make
X amount of dollars doesn’t mean
you won’t qualify for financial aid.
Parents’ income has nothing to do
with eligibility for some student
loan programs,” said Berry.
Let’s examine the myths and
realities of financial aid:
FACT: Texas students receive
billions of dollars to go to college.
Almost 50 percent of Texas college
students received financial last
year. So can you. Every year, Texas
colleges and universities award
billions of dollars in scholarships,
loans and grants. The money is
there, but you have to apply for it.
MYTH: Financial aid comes only in
the form of grants and scholarships.
FACT: While scholarships and
grants are certainly the best form
of aid, federal loan programs carry
favorable interest rates, and are
available regardless of need or
credit history. Additionally, loan
repayment can be postponed until
after graduation. Some loans even
have forgiveness programs if you
pursue certain careers.
MYTH: The Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is too
difficult to complete.
FACT: Although the FAFSA
provides step-by-step instructions,
it is perceived as difficult by most
students and parents because
of its relationship to IRS forms.
However, San Jacinto College
offers individual assistance to help
students complete the FAFSA. All
you have to do is ask.
MYTH: If I’m an undocumented

under no obligation whatsoever
to take a student loan, whether
it’s packaged with other financial
aid or all by itself. Financial aid
directors and guidance counselors
often recommend that you apply
and then compare the interest
rate and terms with other forms of
borrowing, even early withdrawals
from investments. That way, it’s
available to you if you decide to take
advantage of it.

MYTH: I’m too old to get financial
aid.
FACT: There’s no such thing as
an age limit for financial aid.
Some private scholarships may
stipulate an age range, but that
type of criteria is quite rare. In fact,
many scholarships and grants go
to people who are well beyond the
traditional college age and have
children in school.
MYTH: College is just too
expensive anyway. We can’t afford
it.
FACT: First, go back and review
the Financial Aid 101 statistics.
Then consider this: studies show
that college graduates earn 6080 percent more on average than
people with a high school diploma.
Over the average lifetime, college
graduates earn $1 million more
than they would have with a high
school diploma. Do the math. Can
you or your kids afford NOT to go to
college?
MYTH: Community colleges are
smaller than universities, so they
won’t have much financial aid to
give.
FACT: Actually, universities
have larger student populations,
so there’s more competition for
available funds. Considering the
size of San Jac’s student population,
your chances of receiving financial
aid are probably better here. And
because tuition at San Jac is so
low compared to larger schools
(especially for in-district students),
the aid you receive goes a very long
way in covering your costs. “In the
Fall of 2008, San Jacinto College
awarded 648 scholarships totaling
almost $500,000,” said Susan
Arscott, vice president of resource
development. Add to that all the
federal and state grants and lowinterest loans students received
through the financial aid office.

or many Hispanic college
athletes, their love for the game
also sparked a desire to change
history and become the first in
their family to earn a college
degree.
Twenty-year-old Eduardo
Santos of Houston has a hard
time recalling when he first began
kicking a soccer ball. However, the
first-generation college student
does remember how that ball gave
him the idea to earn a San Jacinto
College scholarship and pursue a
different path than his peers.
"I've been playing soccer all my life,"
he said. "I have the skills, and knew
I could possibly get a scholarship
because of it. That served as my
inspiration to go to college."
Up until this point, such aspirations
were uncommon in Santos' family,
who emigrated to the United States
from Mexico in 1994.
"No, back home, you wait for jobs,"
Santos said, who previously attended
college courses as a dual-credit
high school student. "My parents
wanted me to be one step ahead of
the others. I knew I could continue to
play soccer, but I wanted my college
degree as my backup plan to earn a
better living."
Such sentiment is echoed throughout
the entire San Jac soccer team by
Head Coach Dr. David Santesteban,
a first generation immigrant whose
father moved to the U.S. from Spain
in the 1950s, and went on to earn his
doctoral degree and teach Spanish at
California State University, Fresno
for 30 years. Through witnessing his
father's success, Santesteban has
passed on this passion for higher
education to his athletes.
"This game (of soccer) ends for
everybody," said Santesteban, who
has coached soccer for 20 years.
"I'm not here because of my soccer
playing; I'm here because of my
education."

the daunting task of selecting
players each season. There may
be more than a dozen different
nationalities on the team from year
to year, with members stemming
from various socioeconomic
backgrounds.
"I see potential in all of my players,"
said Santesteban. "I've taken kids
who are one step out of jail, and they
were able to turn their lives around
and go on to successful careers.
Many have come through here and
found that this is their way out."
Santesteban teaches his athletes
a model he developed as a college
student, D.A.R.T., an acronym that
means discipline, altruism, respect,
and teamwork.
"I ask them, 'what is their dart made
of'," he said.
For Santos, taking this model
seriously has kept him on track
toward graduating from SJC. He
is currently considering one of
several four-year universities that
have offered him both athletic and
academic scholarships.

"As much as I love to win, at the
end of the day, the true measure
is seeing how the guys have gone
on to become successful in their
own lives," Santesteban said. "The
championships are to be
forgotten; education lasts through

"College broadens your horizons,"
Frias said, adding that studying
doesn't have to be a chore. "I love to
study, especially math. I know more
now than ever before, and that can
be fun, especially when it comes to
winning arguments."
Both Frias and Santos say they're
going to continue playing the game
that brought them to San Jacinto
College, but now realize that lessons
learned within the classroom are
ones that will eventually bring them
success in their careers.

San Jacinto College Alternative Teacher Certification
Program can help you get your teacher certification in
as little as one year

abrina Price was approaching age 50 and
had already invested plenty of time earning
a living working for the City of Houston for
more than 10 years.
However, the desire to teach led her to
choose the Alternative Teacher Certification
Program (ATCP) at San Jacinto College
(SJC) and embark on a career in elementary
education.
"The only regret I have is that I wish I had done
this earlier," Price said, who currently teaches
first grade at Rusk School with the Houston
Independent School District and received the
Teacher of the Year award in 2008. "I just love it
and look forward to going to work every day."
The Alternative Teacher Certification Program
provides an opportunity for highly qualified people
with bachelor's degrees or higher to obtain full
teacher certification in the state of Texas. The
accelerated preparation program is accredited by
the Texas State Board of Educator Certification
(SBEC) and offers a flexible schedule for working
students.
Price worked from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day from
Aug. 2006-07 to allow time for her ATCP courses
at the San Jacinto College North campus, while
her mother helped take care of her children.
"The program is perfect for anyone who is working
full time, and it's convenient because classes are
two evenings per week and interns meet four
Saturdays per semester," said Heidi Cisneros,
program manager for the ATCP. "The average
time for the program is one and half years to two
years."
Deidre Gray, a music teacher at Cravens Early
Childhood Academy in the Sheldon ISD, began her
journey as an educator after realizing a career in
radio and television broadcasting wasn't for her.
She served as a substitute teacher and established
relationships with several school districts before
enrolling in the ATCP to work in education full
time.
"Becoming an educator is so very rich and
rewarding," Gray said, who is also a Teacher of the
Year award recipient. "You get to be a part of the
students growing in knowledge. It’s so refreshing
to watch the light bulbs come on in their minds."
The Alternative Teacher Certification Program
is a part of the Continuing and Professional
Development (CPD) division of San Jacinto
College. The division offers programs and courses
for individuals to retain or advance in their jobs,
or make career transitions. The division provides
training to companies and their employees to meet
employers’ demands for a highly skilled workforce,
while helping incumbent workers reach their

opportunities for people who
have lost jobs due to layoffs,
mergers, and downsizing. The
College provides flexible and
affordable training in many
different skilled training fields,
including heating, ventilation
and air conditioning (HVAC);
welding technology; automotive
collision repair technology;
engineering design graphics (EDG);
diesel technology; and electrical
technology.
There is high demand in Harris
County for highly skilled workers,
who can earn good pay and job
security. In fact, when demand for
new construction is down because of
a slow economy, the need historically
increases for skilled trade workers
to perform maintenance, repairs,
refitting, and additions.
“Even with rising unemployment
rates nationwide, vacancies in
skilled trade areas remain high,”
commented Dr. Gary Friery, dean
of technical education at the San
Jacinto College North campus.
“These programs are great for those
who don’t want to sit at a desk and
would prefer hands-on training in
well-equipped labs.”
All three San Jacinto College
campuses offer students internships
in each of the skilled trade programs
that allow them to work in their field
of study, while earning college credit
at the same time.
Fernando Morales gains invaluable hands-on
training at the Central campus’ state-of-the-art
welding technology complex, one of the largest
welding training centers in the state.

In the sub-tropical Houston area,
there is nearly always a high
demand for HVAC technicians, and
the North and South campuses
offer flexible training options. There
is a fast-track plan in which a
student can obtain a certificate in
just one semester, or students can
earn an advanced certificate in two
semesters. They may also opt for a
more advanced associate degree in
four semesters.
“HVAC is challenging and exciting
and it’s wide open for any age or
gender; in fact more and more
women are entering the profession,”
remarked Ben Ficklin, lead HVAC
instructor at the North campus.
“The industry will be losing about
60 percent of its workforce within
the next five years due to the high
number of retirements, which will
create an extremely high demand.
There has never been a better time
to train for a HVAC career.”
Electrical technology is also a highdemand field. Some industrial and
offshore industries in the Gulf Coast
area are booming, and the demand
for electrical technicians is up by 25
percent. The College offers both a
one-year certificate program, and a
two-year associate degree program
in electrical technology.
Demand also remains strong for
skilled welding technicians, due
to the numerous petrochemical
plants in southeast Texas, as well as
shipbuilding activity, offshore oil rig
construction, pipeline, and building
construction.

path for a displaced worker to pursue
because of diversification. San
Jacinto College EDG students receive
training in a number of different
drafting disciplines (architectural,
civil, piping, electrical, mechanical,
and instrumentation) using a
number of different software
applications, such as AutoCAD,
Plant Design Management Systems,
Inventor, and Microstation. EDG
specialists have been listed as
likely positions that will be needed
as a result of the federal stimulus
initiative to rebuild aging roads,
bridges, and schools around the
nation.
The North campus’ nationally
acclaimed diesel technology program
continues to provide top-notch
training in a field that remains a
hot career market. “We recently
placed three students in good
diesel tech jobs before they even
graduated,” remarked Don Clayton,

Bilingual program helps
non-traditional Latino residents
attend college

recently launched “Nunca es
Muy Tarde,” an innovative
student organization to help
Spanish-speaking adults 25
and older in the areas of college
admissions, registration,
financial aid, and counseling.
The bilingual program is being
developed by Kaye Moon Winters,
an advisor/recruiter for the Central
campus who started a similar
English-language “Never Too Late”
(N2L) program in 2008.
Moon Winters says there’s a critical
need for such a program to help
area Latino residents. “Many older
Latino residents in the area are not
fluent in English,” she commented.
“Compounding this situation is a
lack of appreciation for the value of a
college education. In fact, Texas has
one of the lowest graduation rates of
Hispanics in the nation. Fortunately,
all three San Jacinto College
campuses are federally designated as
Hispanic Serving Institutions, and
we stand ready to remedy education
issues within this community.”
Through this new program, San
Jacinto College will work with
the Pasadena Independent School
District to reach out to students’
parents and say to encourage them
to get an education.
Moon Winters graduated with honors
from San Jacinto College in 2005,
and then attended the University
of Houston, where she graduated
summa cum laude with a Bachelor
of Arts in English in 2007, just
11 days shy of her 60th birthday.
She founded the N2L student
organization to provide support for
non-traditional students (25 and
older) at San Jacinto College. The
N2L club provides assistance with
admissions and registration, as well
as helping older students adjust to
the academic rigors of college life
by providing support, networking,
motivation, and social opportunities
through regular meetings.
“San Jacinto College has bilingual
employees in virtually every
department, and now with ‘Nunca’
we will have a support group to
assist Spanish speakers to navigate
the academic system to a successful
completion and ultimately we hope
‘Nunca es Muy Tarde’ will play
a vital part in a cultural shift in
education.”

Un programa bilingüe comenzó a ayudar
estudiantes adultos latinos del habla
hispana para que puedan asistir a la
escuela de educación superior

innovadora organización
estudiantil “Nunca es
muy tarde” para ayudar a
estudiantes adultos latinos
de habla hispana de 25 o más
años de edad en los procesos
de admisión, matrícula, ayuda
financiera y asesoría. Este programa
bilingüe ha sido desarrollado por
Kaye Moon Winters, una asesora
y reclutadora del recinto Central,
quien además comenzó un programa
similar de aprendizaje de inglés
“Never Too Late” (N2L) en el año del
2008.
Moon Winters asegura que hay
una gran necesidad de programas
como éste para ayudar al sector
de residentes latinos. “Muchos
residentes latinos del área no
hablan inglés,” comentó ella. “En
correlación a esta situación hay una
gran falta de aprecio de la educación
universitaria. En realidad, Texas
cuenta con el porcentaje más bajo
de estudiantes latinos graduados en
toda la nación. Afortunadamente,
los tres recintos de San Jacinto
College están designados por ley
federal para servir instituciones
hispanas, y nosotros estamos aquí
para buscar soluciones a problemas
educativos de nuestra comunidad.”
Mediante este nuevo programa,
estaremos trabajando con el distrito
escolar de Pasadena PISD para
comunicarnos con los padres de
los estudiantes y recordarles que
nunca es tarde para adquirir una
educación.”
Moon Winters se graduó con
honores de San Jacinto College en
el 2005 y luego, en el 2007 asistió
a University of Houston, donde se
graduó summa cum laude con una
licenciatura de inglés once días
antes de su cumpleaños número 60.
Moon Winters fundó la organización
estudiantil N2L en el 2008 para
proveer apoyo a estudiantes adultos
de San Jacinto College de 25 o más
años de edad. El club N2L provee
asistencia con admisión y matrícula,
al igual que apoyo, motivación y
oportunidades de socializar en
las juntas del club para que los
estudiantes adultos se adapten al
rigor de la vida universitaria.
El club “Nunca es Muy Tarde”
(Nunca) club será ejemplar después
del éxito de la organización
estudiantil N2L. “Nuestra meta
es que ‘Nunca’ sea como N2L, un
recurso de inspiración, información,
motivación y comunidad entre
compañeros que estén en busca de
expandir su educación universitaria,”
afirmó Moon Winters. “San Jacinto
College tiene empleados bilingües
virtualmente en cada uno de sus
departamentos y ahora con ‘Nunca’
tendremos un grupo de apoyo que
asistirá a los estudiantes del habla
hispana a navegar el sistema
académico y completarlo con éxito.
Finalmente esperamos que ‘Nunca es
Muy Tarde’ tenga un papel vital en
un cambio cultural de educación.”

vocacionales técnicas ‘Skilled
trade programs’ de San
Jacinto College ofrecen nuevas
oportunidades de carreras para
toda la gente que ha perdido
su empleo por despido, unión
de empresas o reducción de
personal. El recinto provee una
capacitación flexible y económica
en seis carreras de comercio,
calefacción, ventilación y aire
acondicionado (HVAC), tecnología
en soldadura, laminería y pintura
automotriz, ingeniería en diseño
gráfico (EDG), tecnología diesel y
tecnología eléctrica.
En el condado de Harris hay una
gran necesidad de empleados
capacitados en cada una de estas
seis áreas de carreras vocacionales
técnicas. Además, los empleados
en estos oficios pueden ganar un
buen salario y mantener seguridad
de empleo. En realidad, cuando
la demanda de construcción nueva
es baja debido a la economía,
históricamente la necesidad de estos
oficios se incrementa para brindar
mantenimiento, reparaciones,
ajustes y otras cosas más.
“A pesar del alto porcentaje de
desempleo a nivel nacional, las
vacantes en estas áreas de carreras
vocacionales técnicas se mantienen
elevadas,” comentó el Dr. Gary
Friery, decano del departamento de
educación técnica de San Jacinto
College North. “Estos programas
son fabulosos para todas aquellas
personas que no desean estar
sentados en un escritorio y prefieren
una capacitación con prácticas
manuales en nuestros equipados
laboratorios.”
Los tres recintos de San Jacinto
College ofrecen programas de
internos en cada uno de estos
programas de carreras vocacionales
técnicas ‘Skilled trade programs,’ los
cuales permiten a los estudiantes
trabajar en su rama de estudio,
mientras obtienen crédito de
educación superior al mismo tiempo.
En el área sub-tropical de Houston,
casi siempre hay una gran demanda
de técnicos de HVAC y los recintos
North y South ofrecen opciones
de capacitación flexibles. Hay un
plan de estudio acelerado, en el
cual el estudiante puede obtener
un certificado en sólo un semestre,
o los estudiantes pueden obtener
un certificado avanzado en dos
semestres. Los estudiantes también
tienen la opción de optar por un
diploma de asociados más avanzado
en cuatro semestres.
“HVAC es interesante y excitante
a la vez y esta a la disponibilidad
de cualquier persona, sin importar
la edad o sexo; en realidad cada
vez más mujeres están entrando a
esta profesión,” afirmó Ben Ficklin,
instructor líder de HVAC en el
recinto North. “La industria va a
perder aproximadamente el 60 por
ciento de su personal en los próximos
cinco años puesto que muchos de
los actuales técnicos se jubilarán, lo
cual creará una gran demanda,” dijo
Ficklin. “Este es el mejor memento
para obtener una capacitación en el
oficio de HVAC.”
La tecnología eléctrica también
goza de gran demanda. Algunas
de las industrias fuera del área del
golfo están creciendo y este boom se
espera y dure al menos de 15 a 20
años más. Debido a este crecimiento,
la demanda de técnicos electricistas
se ha incrementado un 25 por ciento.
San Jacinto College ofrece ambas
opciones en la tecnología eléctrica;
un programa de certificación de un
año y un programa de diploma de
asociados de dos años.
La demanda de técnicos de
soldadura sigue siendo una de las
más prominentes debido al número
de refinerías petroquímicas en el
sudeste de Texas, al igual que la
construcción de barcos, construcción
de plataformas de petróleo, tubería y
construcción.

Engineering Design Graphics
(EDG) pude ser una inteligente
opción como carrera para todos

escoger el programa de certificación alterna
Alternative Teacher Certification Program
(ATCP) en San Jacinto College (SJC) y comenzar
una carrera en educación primaria.
“Lo único de lo cual me arrepiento es de no
haber hecho esto mucho antes,” dijo Price quien
actualmente enseña primero de primaria en Rusk
School con el distrito escolar de Houston HISD,
donde recibió el premio de la mejor educadora del
año 2008. “Amo mi carrera y me encanta ir a
trabajar todos días.”
El programa de certificación alterna Alternative
Teacher Certification Program provee la
oportunidad a todos aquellos aspirantes con una
licenciatura o más de obtener una licencia de
educador en el estado de Texas. El programa
es corto y está acreditado por la junta directiva
de certificación de Texas ‘Texas State Board of
Educator Certification (SBEC)’ y ofrece un horario
flexible para todos aquellos estudiantes que
trabajan.

Deidre Gray, una maestra de música de la
academia infantil Cravens Early Childhood
Academy en el distrito escolar de Sheldon ISD,
comenzó su carrera como educadora cuando
se dio cuenta que su carrera como locutora de
radio y televisión no era para ella. Ella trabajó
como suplente y estableció conexiones con varios
distritos escolares antes de matricularse en el
programa de ATCP para poder trabajar como
educadora tiempo completo.
“Convertirse en educador es gratificante y está
lleno de recompensas,” dijo Gray, quien también
recibió el premio de maestra del año. “Uno forma
parte del desarrollo intelectual de los estudiantes.
Es refrescante ver iluminar sus mentes.”

La jugada ideal para
obtener un diploma

amor al deporte también
incita el deseo de cambiar
la historia y convertirse
el primero en su familia
en recibir un diploma
universitario.
Eduardo Santos, un joven de 22
años de Houston no recuerda
precisamente la primera vez que
pateó una pelota. No obstante, como
primera generación de estudiantes
de educación superior en su familia,
si le recuerda con facilidad como
patear el balón de soccer le dio la
idea de obtener una beca de San
Jacinto College para emprender una
vía distinta a la de sus compañeros.
“He jugado futbol soccer toda mi
vida,” dijo él. “Tengo las habilidades
y sabía que posiblemente obtendría
una beca para estudiar. Esto me
sirvió como inspiración para asistir a
la universidad.”
Hasta hoy en día, dichos anhelos no
eran comunes en la familia Santos,
quienes inmigraron a los Estados
Unidos procedentes de México en
1994.
“De donde somos originarios uno
tiene que esperar para obtener
un empleo,” dijo Santos, quien
previamente asistió a cursos
de crédito doble en la escuela
preparatoria. “Mis padres siempre
quisieron que yo estuviera un poso
más delante de los demás. Yo sabía
que podía continuar jugando futbol
soccer, pero también quería obtener
un diploma de educación superior
como plan B para vivir mejor.”

la pasión de educación superior a
todos sus atletas.
“Este juego (fútbol soccer) termina
para todos,” dijo Santesteban, quien
ha sido entrenador y director técnico
por 20 años. “Yo no estoy aquí por
mis habilidades como jugador; estoy
aquí por mi educación.”
Una de las interrogantes a
simple vista es la manera en que
Santesteban recluta jugadores
cada temporada. Posiblemente hay
más de una docena de jugadores
de diferentes nacionalidades en el
equipo cada año, con miembros de
varios niveles socioeconómicos.
“Yo miro el potencial de todos mis
jugadores,” dijo Santesteban. “He
reclutado jóvenes que están a un
paso de la cárcel y han podido
retomar el camino a una vida y
carrera de éxito. Muchos han venido
aquí para darse cuenta que ésta es
otra vía en la vida.
Santesteban les enseña a sus
estudiantes atletas un modelo
que el desarrollo como estudiante
universitario, D.A.R.T., el cual es
acrónimo que significa disciplina,
altruismo, respeto y trabajo de
equipo.
“Siempre les pregunto ‘de que está
hecho su dardo,’” dijo él.
Para Santos la mentalidad de
Santesteban es un buen modelo que
lo ha mantenido al corriente con su
meta de graduarse de SJC. Santos
está actualmente considerando una
de varias universidades que le han
ofrecido becas tanto académicas
como deportivas.
Emanuel “Bebo” Frias, un jugador
de 19 años de edad que es compañero
de Santos también ha adoptado los
valores del equipo al cambiar la
historia de su familia y convertirse
en uno de dos hermanos que logra
ser parte del equipo de fútbol de San
Jacinto College y obtener un diploma
de educación superior.

que la educación no debe de ser
un quehacer o deberes. “Me
encanta estudiar, especialmente
las matemáticas. Ahora poseo
más conocimientos que antes y
eso es divertido, especialmente
cuando tengo la razón en debates de
argumentación.”
Tanto Frias como Santos aseguran
que van a continuar jugando el
deporte que los trajo a San Jacinto
College, la diferencia es que ahora
se dan cuenta que las lecciones que
aprendieron en el salón de clase son
precisamente las que les van ayudar
a eventualmente a ser exitosos en
sus respectivas carreras.
“Es verdad que me gusta ganar,
pero al fin del día la verdadera
recompensa es ver que estos jóvenes
han logrado el éxito en sus vidas,”
dijo Santesteban. “Los campeonatos
se olvidan; la educación perdura de

En general, los mitos de
la ayuda financiera probablemente son
tan incoherentes como las historias del
monstruo de la laguna y pie grande. . .
por consiguiente carecen de veracidad.
Por lo tanto, antes de que usted
minimice sus opciones de institutos
y programas de educación superior
basándose en la creencia de que usted
no califica para ayuda financiera,
vamos a comenzar la ayuda financiera
101 con algunas estadísticas.
El promedio anual del costo de
la matrícula para estudiantes de
tiempo completo en los institutos
de educación superior de la
comunidad (la opción del 43 por
ciento de todos los estudiantes) es

ayuda financiera debido a que
suponen que no son elegibles. Esos

de recibir valiosa ayuda financiera
disponible por medio de becas privadas,
institucionales, fondos federales y
estatales, al igual que préstamos para
estudiantes.
“Si sus padres ganan X cantidad de
dólares, no necesariamente significa
que usted no califica para recibir ayuda
financiera. Los ingresos de sus padres
no tienen absolutamente nada que
ver con la elegibilidad para algunos
de los programas de prestamos para
estudiantes,” dijo Berry.
Vamos a examinar los mitos y la
realidad de la ayuda financiera:
MITO: Yo no califico para recibir
ayuda financiera.
REALIDAD: Los estudiantes de Texas
reciben billones de dólares para asistir a
institutos de educación superior. Casi el
50 por ciento de los estudiantes de Texas
recibió ayuda financiera el año pasado.
Por lo tanto, usted también puede ser
elegible. Cada año, los institutos de
educación superior y universidades
proveen billones de dólares en becas,
bonos y préstamos. El dinero está
disponible, pero usted debe solicitar para
poder recibirlo.
MITO: La ayuda financiera se provee
sólo mediante bonos y becas.
REALIDAD: Mientras que las becas
y bonos federales son ciertamente la
mejor ayuda financiera, los programas
federales de préstamos tienen tasas de
interés favorables y están disponibles
sin importar su historial de crédito.
Además, los pagos de los préstamos se
pueden posponer hasta después de su
graduación. Algunos de los préstamos
tienen programas de anulación si
usted se especializa en determinadas
carreras.
MITO: La solicitud gratuita de ayuda
financiera Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) es muy difícil de
llenar.
REALIDAD: Aunque la solicitud de
FAFSA provee las instrucciones paso
a paso, los estudiantes y padres de
familia la perciben como un documento
complejo debido a su relación con las
formas del servicio interno de rentas

Tomando en consideración el tamaño
de la población estudiantil de San
Jac, sus posibilidades de recibir ayuda
financiera son mejores aquí. Debido a
que la matrícula en San Jac es barata
comprada con escuelas más grandes
(especialmente para estudiantes del
distrito), la ayuda que usted recibe
cubre sus costos a largo plazo. “En los
años 2006-2008, San Jacinto College
proveyó $376.000 en forma de becas,”
dijo Susan Arscott, la vicepresidente
de fondos monetarios. Además,
los estudiantes recibieron bonos
federales y estatales y préstamos para
estudiantes de bajo interés mediante
