Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone (9 July 1925 – 10 October 1964), popularly known as Guru Dutt, was an Indian film director, producer and actor. He is often credited with ushering in the golden era of Hindi cinema. He made quintessential 1950s and 1960s classics such as Pyaasa (Thirsty), Kaagaz Ke Phool (Paper Flowers), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (The King, the Queen and the Jack) and Chaudhvin Ka Chand (The Fourteenth Day Moon). In particular, Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool are now included among the greatest films of all time, both by Time magazine’s “All-TIME” 100 best movies and by the Sight & Sound critics’ and directors’ poll, where Dutt himself is included among the greatest film directors of all time. He is sometimes referred to as “India’s Orson Welles”. In 2010, he has been also named in the list of CNN’s “top 25 Asian actors of all time”. He is most famous for making lyrical and artistic films within the context of popular Hindi cinema of the 1950s, and expanding its commercial conventions, starting with his 1957 film, Pyaasa. Several of his later works have a cult following. His movies go full house when re-released; especially in Germany, France and Japan. The latest book on him is Ten Years with Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi’s Journey by Sathya Saran based on the recollections of Abrar Alvi, his chief scriptwriter and friend. When he gets out of the Hospital, Ghosh and Shyam, Vijay’s close friend, refuse to recognise him and he is committed to a mental asylum since he insists he is Vijay and is thought to be mad. Vijay’s brothers too are bought off by Ghosh not to recognize him and a memorial is held for the dead poet. However Vijay, with the help of his friend Abdul Sattar (Johnny Walker), escapes from the mental asylum and reaches the memorial service where he denounces this corrupt and materialistic world. Seeing that Vijay is alive his friend and brothers take side with a rival publisher for more money and declare that Vijay is Vijay and that he is alive. At a function to honour him, Vijay becomes sick of all the hypocrisy in the world around him and he declares he is not Vijay. He then leaves with Gulabo to start a new life. 2 PYAASA India, 1957 Guru Dutt FICHA TÉCNICA Director: Guru Dutt Guinista: Abrar Alvi Intérpretes: Guru Dutt, Mala Sinha, Waheeda Rehman, Johnny Walker, Rehman Música: S. Singh, Cuckoo, Nimmi Running Time: 161 minutes Language: Hindi SYNOPSIS dubbed into Russian. The theme song, Awaara Hoon, was popular in the East for many years. Kapoor has been dubbed “a great showman,” and a filmmaker in the purest Romantic tradition, as he strove to entertain as well as address social themes close to his heart. Awaara dealt with the question of what forms an individual’s moral grounding, (“nurture or nature”) while incorporating comedy and stirring love scenes; in Shri 420 (1955) he addressed issues of poverty, unemployment and national pride in the new Indian state at the same time maintaining the audience’s interest in the romantic plot. While never revolutionary in tone, many of his films explore the ability of the individual to overcome economic and environmental injustice while maintaining his/her innocence and integrity. He is quoted as believing that the individual’s struggles ultimately lead to the desire for love, to care and be cared for. This is consistent with his admiration of Charles Chaplin, and Kapoor’s own “tramp” (Awaara, Shree 420, Mera Naam Joker (1972) is modeled somewhat on his mentor, though with a definite individual flair. His films demonstrate an understanding of music and direction that continue to influence Bollywood filmmaking today. Also a musician, his understanding of the musical feel of his movies gives them a storytelling fluidity equal to that of the best American movie musicals. He surrounded himself with the foremost talents in filmmaking, acting, writing, music composition, and playback singers. Kapoor continued to make films of varying critical and popular success up until his death in 1988, and apparently considered Mera Naam Joker his personal favorite. He is still a well-known name not only in India, but in the Middle East, SE Asia, and Eastern Europe. His descendants have attempted to continue the RK Films banner. SYNOPSIS Directed by Ann Hui and starring Paw Hee-ching, Chan Laiwun, Leung Chun-Lung and Idy Chan, The Way We are is a 2008 Hong Kong film. Tin Shui Wai is a place where bad things happen. A northwestern New Territories town, the Tin Shui Wai New Town emerged in the 1990s thanks to land reclamation and financial help from the Hong Kong Government. Unfortunately, the town currently suffers from widespread unemployment, leading to domestic violence, suicide and plenty of bad stuff. TECHNICAL DATA Director: Ann Hui Script: Lou Shiu-Wa Producer: Ann Hui Cast: Hee Ching Paw, Chun-lung Leung, Idy Chan, Lai-wun Chan, Vincent Chui and Clifton Ko. Editors: Chow Cheung-kan Cinematography: Charlie Lam Music: Chan Si-lok Runtime: 90 min. However, there is another side to Tin Shui Wai, namely the side where people get up in the morning, live their lives, and contribute the best they can to their communities. The characters lives never threaten to become the stuff of melodrama, and though details are revealed about the history of the characters and the town, little qualifies as an outright dramatic revelation. The emotions here are simple and respectful ones, and show us that the people of Tin Shui Wai have a heart and soul. Living there is like living anywhere else; it’s full of ups and downs, small successes and setbacks, and people who are worth getting to know if you just give them a chance. DIRECTOR’s BIOGRAPHY Ann Hui was born in China in 1947. She moved to Hong Kong when she was five. She studied in St. Paul´s Convent School. After graduating in English and Comparative Literature from Hong Kong University, she spent two year at London Film School. Returning to Hong Kong in 1975, she entered TVB as a director, making many serials and documentaries of 16 mm. During this time she in particular helped King Hu as an assistant on television. The most notable feature she made during this period was Boy From Vietnam (1978), which was her first film on Vietnam and formed the first part of her “Vietnamese trilogy”. Paw Hee-Ching and Leung Chun-lung plays a mother and son who live in Tin Shui Wai. Paw works in the local supermarket while Leung is a student. Paw met Chan Lai-wun as she also becomes on of the supermarket staff and begins to help her out. Chan wants to buy a television set but is turned off by the transport fee. Paw asks leung to come to the electrical store and helps her carry it up to her public housing apartment and saves the transport fee. She returns the favour by giving Paw a bag of expensive chinese mushrooms. Hui experimented with special effects and daring angles; her preoccupation with sensitive political and social issues is a recurrent feature in most of her subsequent films. Boat People (1982), the third part of her Viernamese trilogy, is the most famous of her early films. It examines the plight of Vietnamese immigrants after the Vietnam War. Through her deceased daughter, Chan has a grandson who lives with her son-in-law, who has since re-married. Chan purchased gifts for them and goes with Paw to meet them in Shatin, but her grandson does not show up and her gifts are rejected by her son-in-law. At the end of the movie, Paw, Leung and Chan are seen happily having dinner together in Tin Shui Wai. In the mid-1980s Hui continued her string of critically acclaimed works. Love in a Fallen City (1984), based on a novel by Eileen Chang, was her next work. In 1990 saw one of her most important works to date, the semi-autobiographical The Song of Exile. The film looks into the loss of identity, disorientation and despair faced by an exiled mother and a daughter. Also, her Ordinary Heroes (1999), about Chinese and Hong Kong political activists from 1970s to the 1990s, won the Best Feature at the Golden Horse Awards. Her last works has been The Way We Are (2008) and Night and Fog (2009). This is a simple story about regular people, and Ann Hui breathes credibility and affection into her characters and their lives by choosing not to overdo the film. Her approach is decidedly quiet, utilizing sparing amounts of music or manipulative technique, and making no attempt to cajole the audience into the role of active participant. The viewer’s role here is passive, much like the characters themselves, who react naturally and without forced emotion or incident. 5 THE WAY WE ARE CHINA, 2008 ANN HUI al Mejor Largometraje en los premios Caballo de Oro. Sus últimos trabajos han sido The Way We Are (De la forma que somos, 2008) y Night and Fog (Noche y niebla, 2009). She is a Gypsy with a young daughter, he is a snobbish Englishman with a young daughter. They met in a very improbable way, and you can fill in the rest. But even if the formula is adhered to, the beauty of the English (Scottish?) countryside, and the obvious chemistry between the leads lift this charming little picture above the formulas and into its own territory. Highly recommended to the fans of this genre. Gracie and Daisy cling to Molly for support, and Molly decides they need to return to their parents. Molly plans a daring escape, and the three girls begin an epic journey back to Western Australia, travelling 1,500 miles on foot with no food or water, and navigating by following the fence that has been build across the nation to stem an over-population of rabbits. For days they walk north, following the fence and eluding their pursuers, a native tracker and the regional constabulary. DIRECTOR’s BIOGRAPHY Noyce was born in Griffith, New South Wales, attended Barker College, Sydney, and began making short films at the age of 18, starting with Better to Reign in Hell, using his friends as the cast. He joined the Australian Film & Television School in 1973, and released his first professional film in 1977. Many of his films feature espionage, as Noyce grew up listening from his father’s stories with the Z Special Force during World War II, and has an interest in the theme. After his debut feature, the medium-length Backroads (1977), Noyce achieved commercial and critical success with Newsfront (1978), which won Australian Film Institute (AFI) awards for Best Film, Director, and Screenplay. Noyce worked on two miniseries for Australian television with fellow Australian filmmaker George Miller: The Dismissal (1983) and The Cowra Breakout (1984). Miller also produced the film that brought Noyce his greatest acclaim in the United States — the thriller Dead Calm (1989) which turned Nicole Kidman into a star. His greatest commercial success to date has been the Tom Clancy spy thriller Clear and Present Danger (1994) starring Harrison Ford. After 1998’s The Bone Collector, Noyce decided to take a break from Hollywood. He made in his native Australia the “stolen generation” picture Rabbit-Proof Fence, which achieved great acclaim and won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Film in 2002. Noyce also achieved great acclaim in the United States for The Quiet American, a 2002 film which gave Michael Caine an Academy Award Best Actor nomination. After doing Catch a Fire (2006) in South Africa, Noyce decided to make another big budget studio film with 2010’s Salt. TECHNICAL DATA Director: Phillip Noyce Producer: Phillip Noyce, Christine Olsen, John Winter Cast: Everlyn Sampi, Kenneth Branagh, David Gulpilil Music: Peter Gabriel Cinematography: Christopher Doyle Runtime: 94 min He has described Rabbit-Proof Fence as “easily” his proudest moment as a director: “Showing that film to various Aboriginal communities around the country and seeing their response, because it gave validity to the experiences of the stolen generations”. 4 RABBIT-PROOF FENCE Australia, 2002z Phillip Noyce SINOPSIS Basada en la novela autobiográfica de Doris Pilkington, Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence, esta película narra la historia real de tres niñas aborígenes que, en 1931, fueron alejadas forzosamente de sus familias para ser introducidas en la sociedad blanca como trabajadoras domésticas. THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH Australia, 1978 Fred Schepisi TECHNICAL DATA Director: Fred Schepisi Producer: The Film House / Victorian Film Cinematographer: Lan Baker Cast: Tommy Lewis, Freddy Reynolds, Ray Barrett, Jack Thompson, Angela Punch Mcgregor, Steve Dodds, Peter Carroll, Ruth Cracknell Music: Bruce Smeaton Runtime: 120 Min DIRECTOR’s BIOGRAPHY vvFred Schepisi (born in Melbourne, 1939) began his production career in the advertising world and served as head of the Film House for almost 20 years where he directed both commercials and documentaries. Throughout the late 1990s Sen worked on numerous short films, before making his feature film debut with Beneath Clouds in 2002. He studied filmmaking at the Australian Film Television and Radio School, where he produced his first short films, working with the crew he continues to work with today. Sen was raised in Inverell, New South Wales, Australia. Sen drew on his own background as the child of an Aboriginal mother and an absent white father for the screenplay of his first feature-length work, Beneath Clouds, filmed on a $2.5 million dollar budget. The film follows two teenagers, Lena (Dannielle Hall) and Vaughn (Damian Pitt) who are hitchhiking their way from a rural New South Wales town to Sydney, each for different reasons. The film explores many of the racial difficulties in their society as well as the way the choices each makes can effect how they turn out. The film was based on Ivan Sen’s own experiences of growing up in Alice Springs with an Aboriginal mother and absent European father. It won Sen global acclaim, screening at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and winning the Premiere First Movie Award at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival and the 2002 Best Director Award at the Australian Film Institute Awards. SYNOPSIS Beneath Clouds takes us on a journey with its two main characters, as each tries to escape their past, and head into a different future. Lena, the light-skinned daughter of an Aboriginal mother and Irish father, and Vaughn, a Murri boy doing time in a minimum security prison in North West NSW. To Lena, Vaughn represents the life she is running away from. To Vaughn, Lena embodies the society that has rejected him. Dramatic events throw them together on a journey with no money and no transport. An uneasy relationship begins to form as they hit the road heading to Sydney, taking them on a journey that’s as emotional as it is physical, as revealing as it is desperate. Initially the two reluctant travelling companions are suspicious and wary of each other, but their journey, mostly by foot, and the odd life, builds an understanding between them. And for a very short amount of time, they experience a rare true happiness together. In 2009, the Message Sticks Indigenous Film Festival held at the Sydney Opera House has seen the world premiere of Sen’s Fire Talker, a documentary biopic about political activist, Aboriginal footballer, .It premiered at the 10th Anniversary of the Message Sticks Indigenous Film Festival held at the Sydney Opera House in May 2009. 9 WALKABOUT Australia, 1970 Nicolas Roeg SYNOPSIS Based on the novel by James Vance Marshall, Walkabout deals with a teenage girl and her younger brother who are stranded in the Australian outback after their father kills himself. Abandoned in the harsh Australian outback they must learn to cope in the natural world, without their usual comforts, in this hypnotic masterpiece from Nicolas Roeg. Along the way, they meet a young aborigine on his “walkabout,” a rite of passage in which adolescent boys are initiated into manhood by journeying into the wilderness alone.Forming a non-verbal friendship— they don’t understand a word of each other’s languages, other than “water” after some effort—the black boy toughens them up and helps get them back to the civilisation. Roeg’s Walkabout is a thrilling adventure as well as a provocative rumination on time and civilization and its messages are clear enough: the awesome power of nature (every other scene appears to involve cuts to small animals of some kind), and how technological ingenuity breeds an unhealthy reliance. DIRECTOR’s BIOGRAPHY Nicolas Jack Roeg (born 15 August 1928 in London) is an English film director and cinematographer. Contributing to the visual look of Lawrence of Arabia and Roger Corman’s The Masque of the Red Death, and co-directing Performance, he would later become the guiding force behind such landmark films as Walkabout, Don’t Look Now and The Man Who Fell to Earth. Roeg’s films are known for having scenes and images from the plot presented in a disarranged fashion, out of chronological and causal order, requiring the viewer to do the work of mentally rearranging them to comprehend the storyline. They seem, in the words of one critic, “to shatter reality into a thousand pieces” and are “unpredictable, fascinating, cryptic and liable to leave you wondering what the hell just happened. . . .” Roeg displays a “freedom from conventional film narration,” says another, and his films often consist of, at least, an “intriguing kaleidoscopic multiplication of images.” Often, Roeg will edit his stories in disjunctive and semi-coherent ways that make full sense only in the film’s final moments, when a crucial piece of information surfaces; they are “mosaic-like montages [filled with] elliptical details which become very important later.” These techniques, and Roeg’s foreboding sense of atmosphere, have influenced later filmmakers such as Steven Soderbergh, Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, Christopher Nolan, François Ozon and Danny Boyle. His later films, however, have received a colder reception by critics and the viewing public. TECHNICAL DATA Director: Nicolas Roeg Producer: 20Th Century Fox Composer: John Barry Cinematography: Nicolas Roeg Cast: Jenny Agutter, Lucien John, David Gumpilil, John Meillon Runtime: 100 Min Roeg’s influence on cinema is not limited to deconstructing narrative. The “Memo From Turner” sequence in Performance predates many techniques later used in music videos. And the “quadrant” sequence in Bad Timing, in which the thoughts of Theresa Russell and Art Garfunkel are heard before words are spoken, set to Keith Jarrett’s piano music from the Köln Concert, again stretched the boundaries of what could be done with film. 11 P RO G R AME / P RO GR AMA COMPETITION COMPETICIÓN RIDING THE STALLION OF DREAMS India, 2010 Girish Kasaravalli TECHNICAL DATA Director: Girish Kasaravalli Producer: Basantkumar Patil Camera: Rameshchandra H. His son Shivanna wife Hema and grand daughter come to this village on the pretext of seeing the old man. But they have something else in mind. The papers pertaining to land has to get the signature of the dieing old man. When the land papers are ready at the registration office it is Iriya who comes and tells that the old man is dead and he ask where to dig the grave. DIRECTOR’s BIOGRAPHY Girish Kasaravalli graduated from FTII Pune in 1975, with a specialization in ‘film direction’. The world of Kurosawa, Ray, Ozu, Fellini and Antonioni inspired him and his conviction in neo-realist cinema deepened. His first film as an independent director was Ghatashraddha in 1977, which won him the Golden lotus, and also won a few international awards. He won his second Golden Lotus for Tabarana Kathe in 1987. Considered as one of the bestedited films in India, the film deals with the futile efforts of a retired government servant to earn his pension. In 1997, he came up with, Thaayi Saheba which won him his third Golden Lotus award. Thaayi Saheba is considered to be the most mature work of the director, dealing with the transition in the Indian socitey from the pre independence to the post independence periods. He repeated his success with Dweepa in 2002 starring late actress Soundarya. This film won his fourth Golden Lotus award. Dweepa was different from his earlier films. His last film Naayi Neralu dealt with a very intense and bizarre concept of reincarnation, based on the novel with the same name by S.L. Bhyrappa, Girish Kasaravalli has given a different interpretation of the subject. The International Film Festival of Rotterdam held a retrospective of Girish Kasaravalli’s films in 2003. It is more than a grave situation for assistant to village chieftain Matadayya (Sadashiva Brahmavar). He keeps the death of old man in the family as a secret and when Iriya is right he says he is wrong. Stunned Iriya go away with small tips. Now the issue is whether to do the registration of papers first or do the cremation. Doing registration of land papers takes priority as the proceeds of sale is very important for Shivanna because he starting a convent school in the city. Final rites of the chieftain that is his father Shivanna postpone. In the end director Kasaravalli looks at the aspect of practicality. Why not an alternative livelihood for Iriya he thinks and he decide that superstitious belief does not fill the empty stomach it is only the hard work essential in life. On the other hand the inevitability of postponing the final rites is discussed here is almost similar to the body laying in ‘Samskara’ (path breaking cinema of 70’s in Kannada) on the streets. 2 RIDING THE STALLION OF DREAMS India, 2010 Girish Kasaravalli FICHA TÉCNICA DIRECTOR Director: Girish Kasaravalli Productor: Basantkumar Patil Cámara: Rameshchandra H.
