In today’s Gospel Jesus tells another parable about the smallest of seeds. Clearly God is very interested in the littlest thing because it nevertheless has a great capacity to grow. Pope Francis said in his recent interview with America magazine that the great attribute of God is that although He is infinite, He can become small and work through small beginnings. St. Ignatius said: “to be contained in the tiniest - this is the divine.” Once a parishioner came to me and lamented that things seemed to be getting worse in the world. I told him about something I learned in the seminary: that we must believe that the Kingdom of God is GROWING. The Kingdom of God is like the tiny mustard seed which grows into the biggest tree. Even though things seem to be getting worse, the Church teaches that really things are getting better, that goodness is increasing, and that we are getting closer to the promised establishment of the perfect Kingdom of God! But how can this be when so many souls seem headed for destruction? For me the only explanation is that every year there are more saints. If God had ended the world 100 years ago, we would not have such colossal saints as St. Therese, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, and Blessed Pope John Paul II. The increase in the sum total of goodness in the universe seems small because it is hidden in the hearts of these individuals, but it is substantial. We may feel discouraged by news reports about crime, terrorism, war, and priests causing scandal. We may be disheartened because of terrible new laws that allow coed bathrooms in public schools, that allow nurses to do abortions and that allow more people to sue the Church. But by becoming saints ourselves we can become part of the solution, and we can build up the Kingdom of God! INTERNATIONAL ROSARY MONDAY, OCTOBER 7 AFTER THE 5:45PM MASS IN THE CHURCH Everyone is invited to an International Rosary on the feast of our Lady of the Rosary tomorrow. Delgado-Braun, Religious Education “It is not I who seek out Mary, but it is God who offers her to me; it is not I who love her, but the Lord Who tells me to love her.” (The Mystery of Mary by Cardinal Ballestero) How often do we hear in conversation from nonCatholics and Catholics alike, complaints about Mary having an important part in our prayers and devotions? This beautiful quote brings to mind the answer to the nagging question, God willed it! God in His perfect plan of salvation, willed that Our Lady occupy a prominent position in receiving the message of salvation, nurturing the Word in her womb, raising the Lord, participating in the suffering of His Passion and Death, becoming the spiritual mother of all mankind, witnessing His Resurrection, and receiving the Holy Spirit at the inception of the Church. Mary has a special relationship with the Holy Trinity; she was chosen by God the Father, became mother of the Son and spouse of the Holy Spirit. How can we think that she is not worthy of being our spiritual mother, of receiving our plight for intercession before God, or of being the Queen of Heaven? Are our designs any greater than those of God Almighty? Devotion to Our Lady has always had a primal place in the lives of all the saints, who have understood that Mary, who is mother to the Lord, and who nurtured and taught Him, can certainly form us into other Christs. She can bring us to unimaginable heights if only we become her children and run to her for help in our everyday battle with the world, the flesh and the devil. Mary is the humble Virgin who schools us in the ineffable mysteries of God. She has given us a simple, but powerful weapon, the Rosary. She does not fill our intellects with theological knowledge, but shows us how to ponder the Word of God in our hearts. Praying the Rosary brings us closer to Our Lady and disposes us to pray and meditate on the mysteries of God made man, for the Rosary is Christocentric. This devotion, thought by some intellectuals to be a medieval backward custom, has been seen by many Popes, including Blessed John Paul II, as a means to implore peace for the world, foster unity in the family and leading one to contemplation (Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae). By entering into each mystery of the life of Christ, we walk with the Blessed Virgin Mary and allow “her to train us and mold us with the same care, until Christ is ‘fully formed’ in us.” (15) Praying the Holy Rosary as a family every evening is a sure sign of leading a spiritual life. Perhaps praying the entire Rosary is out of the question at first, it sure can be daunting when we begin, but we can always just take a mystery, explain it to the children in words that they understand, and begin praying holding the hands of Our Blessed Mother, who will help us on the way to the bliss of Heaven. If you need to brush up on how to pray the Rosary, this site has instructions in many languages: http://www.rosary-center.org/howto.htm. Let us entrust ourselves to the Blessed Virgin Mary, our mother and ask her to guide, care and intercede for us! Sonia is married to Manuel and they have an adult son, Elias who serves in the military. She has been a member of the Legion of Mary for many years, visiting those in jail and taking Holy Communion to the homebound. She is an Extraordinary Minister of Comunion (EM), sings with the Adult Choir at Sunday Mass and takes part in the Charismatic prayer group, especially doing intercessory prayer. One of the loving works that she does is visiting the homeless at the park on Saturdays. Sonia, along with other parishioners takes a warm meal to the homeless, prays the Rosary with them and lovingly listens to their problems. Sonia has a beautiful gift that is reminiscent of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta; when she is speaking or listening to one of the homeless men and women, she devotes all her time and interest to each one of them, never seeming in a hurry or distracted by the many interruptions or noises at the park. It is almost as if the rest of the world ceased and that particular soul was the only one needing her love and attention. What a blessing it is to have people like Sonia as members of our Parish Family! Thank you for all your works of love! Page 5 - October 6, 2013 In the Diocese... For more information visit: www.sacramentowwme.org. Page 6 - St. Joseph’s Modesto From our Holy Father in Rome ANGELUS — Sunday, 8 September 2013 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning! In today’s Gospel Jesus insists on the conditions for being his disciples: preferring nothing to the love of Christ, carrying one’s cross and following him. Many people in fact drew near to Jesus, they wanted to be included among his followers; and this would happen especially after some miraculous sign which accredited him as the Messiah, the King of Israel. However Jesus did not want to disappoint anyone. He knew well what awaited him in Jerusalem and which path the Father was asking him to take: it was the Way of the Cross, the way of sacrificing himself for the forgiveness of our sins. Following Jesus does not mean taking part in a triumphal procession! It means sharing his merciful love, entering his great work of mercy for each and every man and for all men. The work of Jesus is, precisely, a work of mercy, a work of forgiveness and of love! Jesus is so full of mercy! And this universal pardon, this mercy, passes through the Cross. Jesus, however, does not want to do this work alone: he wants to involve us too in the mission that the Father entrusted to him. After the Resurrection he was to say to his disciples: “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you”... if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven” (Jn 20:21-22). Jesus’ disciple renounces all his possessions because in Jesus he has found the greatest Good in which every other good receives its full value and meaning: family ties, other relationships, work, cultural and economic goods and so forth.... The Christian detaches him or herself from all things and rediscovers all things in the logic of the Gospel, the logic of love and of service. To explain this requirement, Jesus uses two parables: that of the tower to be built and that of the king going to war. The latter says: “What king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and asks terms of peace” (Lk 14:31-32). Jesus does not wish to address the topic of war here; it is only a parable. Yet at this moment in which we are praying intensely for peace, this word of the Lord touches us to the core, and essentially tells us: there is a more profound war that we must all fight! It is the firm and courageous decision to renounce evil and its enticements and to choose the good, ready to pay in person: this is following Christ, this is what taking up our cross means! This profound war against evil! What is the use of waging war, so many wars, if you aren't capable of waging this profound war against evil? It is pointless! It doesn’t work.... Among other things this war against evil entails saying “no” to the fratricidal hatred and falsehood that are used; saying “no” to violence in all its forms; saying “no” to the proliferation of weapons and to the illegal arms trade. There is so much of it! So much of it! And the doubt always remains: is this war or that war — because wars are everywhere — really a war to solve problems or is it a commercial war for selling weapons in illegal trade? These are the enemies to fight, united and consistent, following no other interests than those of peace and of the common good. ...Jesus is the sun, Mary is the dawn that heralds his rising. ...Let us now invoke her as Queen of Peace. Queen of Peace pray for us! Queen of Peace pray for us! No funciona...
