Santa Cruz County sheriff’s investigators are searching for two
suspects in connection with an identity-theft ring. Hernan Coto,
33, and Jesse Jurado, 32, have been linked to an identity-theft
ring that has victimized dozens of people in Santa Cruz County, including an 82-year-old
woman whose credit cards were stolen during a burglary, Deputy April Skalland said.
Coto and Jurado were arrested on Jan. 7 by the California Highway Patrol in a stolen vehicle
in possession of stolen credit cards and identity-theft items, but were released after posting
a bail bond, Skalland said. A warrant was issued for their arrest on Friday. Jurado is on
probation for felony evasion of a peace officer and Coto is on
probation for being in possession of narcotics while carrying a
firearm, Skalland said.

attempted kidnapping
secuestro
Investigators are seeking a man suspected of attempting to kidnap
a 3-year-old boy from a store in the Great Mall shopping center
in Milpitas on Jan. 6, Milpitas police said. The boy’s mother told
police that at about 5 p.m. that day, she was holding the boy’s hand
while in the Sporters team apparel shop with her husband. She
then felt a tug from the boy and let go of his hand, thinking that her husband had taken the
boy.
The mother then checked on her family members and saw the suspect walking out of the
store holding the boy’s left hand. She yelled at the suspect, who was only about 10 feet away
from her, and he let go of the boy’s hand and fled into the mall. The boy was unhurt. All police
officers on duty in Milpitas were sent to the Great Mall and assisted mall security with setting
up a perimeter at all entrances to the mall.
Police officers walked through the mall for an hour but did not find the suspect. The suspect is
described as an Asian male, aged 50 to 60 years old, 5’4” -5’6” inches tall and weighing about
200 pounds. Police have released a composite sketch of the suspect.
“We’re looking for anyone at the Great Mall who was there or who recognizes him to give us
a call,” police spokesman Sgt. Raj Maharaj said.

Catherine Cano
harboring a fugitive
On May 14, 2012, at about 2:00 AM,
Rocky Marquez allegedly used another
inmate’s identification to escape the
Lower Buckeye County Jail. Surveillance
video footage shows Marquez allegedly
wearing another inmate’s civilian clothing
and identification to be released with
other inmates.
On May 1, 2012, a federal grand jury
handed up an eight-count indictment
with allegations tied to a large-scale
marijuana-distribution ring and Marquez’s
efforts to conceal the proceeds by
purchasing property, including two
$400,000 homes.
On January 14, 2013, Marquez was
captured at Catherine Cano’s home
in Detroit, Michigan. On January 25,
2013, Marquez pulled the same stunt by
switching identifications with another
inmate and walked out of the Detroit jail.
U.S. Marshals report that Marquez may
be with Catherine Cano, 49 years old
and her three children. She is now being
sought on a warrant charging her with
allegedly harboring a fugitive.

Santa Cruz police have released a sketch of a man suspected of
groping a 23-year-old woman a block east of City Hall, a police
spokesman said. The woman was leaning to retrieve some
things from her car at about 4:30 p.m. in a parking lot at the
intersection of Cedar and Church Streets, Santa Cruz police Deputy Chief Steve Clark said.
The suspect then reached under her skirt and grabbed her buttocks, Clark said.
When the woman turned around to confront the man, the suspect made some inappropriate
comments while slurring his speech and appeared to be intoxicated. A second male then
came up, apologized for the suspect and shoved the suspect into the passenger seat of a car
parked next to the woman’s, according to Clark. The woman ran to a nearby business to notify
police but the car was gone by the time officers got there.
The victim said the car was a silver 1990s-model Toyota 4Runner and described the suspect
as a white man about 25 to 30 years old who is 5’8” to 5’9” tall, weighs about 165 to 170
pounds with short dark hair, dark eyes and stubby facial hair and was wearing a blue T-shirt
and khaki pants. Police consider the case unrelated to the Jan. 11 groping of a 12-year-old girl
in Santa Cruz. Officers are currently following a promising lead in that case.

Police today released sketches of two suspects in a shooting
that injured four teenagers in Brentwood last week. The shooting
occurred around 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 when three to four males
driving in the 1100 block of Breton Drive opened fire on the teens
after commenting on their clothing, according to police.
The four victims, who range in age from 13 to 16, were all shot but are expected to survive.
Police said the shooting appears to have been gang-related but that there is nothing to
indicate that the victims are affiliated with a gang.
One is of the driver of the suspects’ car. He is described as a white man between 18 and 25
years old with blond hair.
The second sketch is of a passenger in the car, described as a Hispanic man around the same
age, police said.
The car itself is believed to be a white or light-colored late-model Honda or Toyota four-door
sedan, and the gun used in a shooting is described as a chrome or silver .22-caliber revolver.

San Francisco police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two men who robbed a bank
in the city’s Richmond District earlier this month. The robbery was reported shortly before noon
on Jan. 4 at a bank in the 6000 block of Geary Boulevard. The pair entered the bank and one
suspect held employees at gunpoint while the other stayed near the doors, police said.
Bank employees handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspects, who then fled
and were last seen getting into a dark-colored vehicle, according to police. The suspects
were caught on surveillance video at the bank, and police have released images of them in
the hopes that the public can help identify them. The armed suspect was described as a black
man between 30 and 35 years old who is about 6 feet 1 inches tall and between 230 and 250
pounds.
He had a dark and possibly fake beard, and was wearing a black-and-blue checkered longsleeve shirt, a black Orlando Magic hat and a black shoulder bag, police said. The other
suspect, described as a black man about 5’6” tall, was wearing a white-and-black checkered
hooded jacket.

ROBO
The San Jose Police Department is asking for the public’s help in
identifying two suspects in a recent home invasion robbery that
occurred in 400 Block of Mahoney Drive in East San Jose. On
2/1/2013, at approximately 1:51 A.M., two adult female victims (a
mother and daughter) were home alone when the 74 year old mother heard someone breaking
into her daughter’s car which was parked in front of the residence. The mother yelled at the
suspect to stop. The suspect then gained entry into the residence through a front window.
Once inside, the suspect punched the mother in the face repeatedly. The mother and daughter
were able to flee the residence on foot.
The suspect and a second adult male suspect then chased both women down the street. The
first suspect caught up to the mother in the middle of the street and assaulted her a second
time. The mother was able to escape and again fled on foot. Again, the first suspect chased
the mother and assaulted her a third time. During the third assault, the suspect placed a gun
to the victim’s neck and threatened to kill her. The daughter was able to make it to a neighbor’s
house and notify police. In the meantime, the suspects went back to the victim residence,
entered it and ransacked it. The suspects took multiple pieces of property before fleeing on
foot before officers could arrive.
The 74 year old mother was transported to a local hospital via ambulance where she was
treated for a broken nose, multiple abrasions and bruising to her face, two black eyes, and
abrasions to both arms. The 43 year old daughter was not injured. The unidentified suspects
remain at-large.

Murder / Asesinato
Police have identified three suspects wanted in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old man at a Pittsburg gas
station last week, a police lieutenant said today. Bay Point resident Brian Keith Fox, 22, Robert Gary Grant, 24, and
19-year-old Demetria Thomas are all suspects linked to the fatal shooting of Timothy Smith, Jr. at a Union 76 gas
station on Jan. 29, Lt. Ron Raman said.
The shooting was reported around 9 a.m. at the gas station at 2150 Railroad Ave., sending customers running and
leaving Smith with a fatal gunshot wound to the head, according to authorities. He was pronounced dead later that
day. Raman declined to disclose a motive for the killing, but said that Smith was “definitely the intended target.”
Police quickly identified Fox as a suspect in the slaying and said today that Thomas and Grant are also suspects.

All three have criminal histories. Raman said both Fox and Grant have prior drug and weapon-related convictions,
while Thomas, who also goes by the nicknames “Deme” or “Diamond,” has one prior arrest and is believed to
solicit escort services via the Internet. The three suspects are known to frequent Oakland and San Francisco. Law
enforcement officers there have also been notified of the warrants for their arrest.

Movie Critics Corner: Life as a House
by Steven Ferdin, Jr.
Veteran producer Irwin Winkler has about fifty
movies under his filmography which extends
as far back to 1967’s Double Trouble starring
Elvis Presley and has been responsible for
producing several other critically acclaimed
works such as Raging Bull, Goodfellas,
andRocky for which he won an Academy
Award for in 1976. However, his credits as a
director only comprise of seven movies, one
of which was the elusive 2001 release Life As
A House.
Kevin Kline plays George Monroe, an
architect who is estranged from his family,
especially his oldest son Sam, played by
Hayden Christensen before his wider fame
a year later in Star
Wars. After George
quits his job in a fit
of rage, he looses
conscience in what
he soon discovers
to be caused from
a terminal case of
cancer. He chooses
not to reveal his
condition to anyone,
and decides to embark
on the final project of
his life, tearing down the shack he lives in and
building a house to give Sam after his death.
George makes Sam cancel his summer plans
with his friends to help him build his house,
which deeply infuriates him, still oblivious
about his terminal state. In time the two build
their house, as well as their relationship,
between Sam, George, his ex-wife, and
several other people in their lives.
Life As A House is an under-appreciated
movie which grossed a modest $23.9
million worldwide. This film features a
great example of character development, as
people struggle to cope with the ones they
thought they knew and in time learn to truly
appreciate one another. A slightly formulaic
drama, I recommend Life As A House as a
great character
driven movie
about family and
personal change.
While taking a vandalism report at an elementary school, an officer was interrupted by
a little boy about six years old.
Looking up and down at his uniform, he asked, “Are you a cop?”
“Yes,” he replied and continued writing the report.
“My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?”
“Yes, that’s right,” he told him.
“Well, then,” he said as he extended his foot towards the officer, “would you please tie
my shoe because i dunno how?”
Some calls take priority.

Mounting Costs
Sold to voters as the way to save the
city’s finances and to restore services
immediately, San Jose’s Measure B has
yet to save the City a single dollar. In fact,
based on a report from San Jose Inside/
Metro Newspapers, City Attorney Rick
Doyle pegs the City’s current expenses
on outside attorneys at over $830,000.
While that’s an outlandish number, the
meter has just begun to run.
What has the city got for its $800,000?
Well, it was forced to drop its own Federal
lawsuit against city unions and has lost
its bid to put the unions’ lawsuits on hold
in State court (State law is considered to
have even stronger protections for vested
rights). Consider this, the trial has not
even started yet. This is the bill-most believe the actual bill is even higher, it just
hasn’t been reported yet—for just getting
warmed up.
feb - 13
fw
of
Measure B
In addition to the six Measure B lawsuits, the San Jose POA has two separate arbitration actions against the City
regarding Measure B. All of this is being
handled by the outside law firm of Meyers Nave. But that’s not all. Based on the
City’s shoddy bargaining practices seven
separate complaints from seven separate unions have been
filed against the
City with the
state Public
Employee
Relations
Board.
These complaints are
being handled
by another highpriced outside
law firm.
The point being with all this, is that
every dollar spent on these law firms
is a dollar taken away from serving the
residents. Measure B supporters told
employees and residents who raised
concerns with the cost of lawyers—not to
worry. We’ll save more than we spend.
Well, that hasn’t panned out so far.
Next on the horizon, of course, is that
the high priced lawyers are also being brought in to handle all the
negotiations with city unions. The
billable hours are being racked up
at a staggering pace. Measure B and
the wake of labor strife have made
some clear winners: the city’s hired
legal guns.

Mayor Reed And Councilperson Herrera Fail To Seek Serious Solutions
San Jose’s firefighters and police officers
agree that political rhetoric and posturing
should be set aside and that city leaders and
public safety unions should focus on finding
solutions to serious public safety challenges.
Moving forward, however, must begin with a
clear record.
Unfortunately, the Mercury News chose
to view pension reform through rose-colored
lenses: Measure B is pension reform. Unions,
some council members and some candidates
oppose Measure B. Therefore, unions, some
council members and some candidates oppose pension reform. It’s nonsense, and this
paper knows we offered legal and substantial
pension reform that was rejected by the city in
favor of the legally flawed Measure B.
This was the fallacy that allowed Mayor
Chuck Reed to effectively eliminate collective
bargaining in San Jose and muted warnings
about the measure’s impact on public safety.
Never have city leaders and its workforce
been this divided, yet there has been no
criticism of Reed’s divisive leadership from
the Mercury News. Why have other cities not
experienced similar turmoil? The answer is
simple: Leadership.
The police and fire unions took pay cuts,
increases in health care premiums and offered
legal pension reform that could have already
been implemented. Instead, we have rising litigation costs, no pension savings and talented
employees leaving in droves. Both Reed and
the Mercury News knew this would happen.
Your editorials attacking police officers
and firefighters for expressing our serious
concerns with Rose Herrera omits all of the
reasons why we believe she’s a poor choice
for our city. Your implication that we’re opposed to legal pension reform is untrue and
disingenuous.
Our opposition to Rose Herrera is rooted
first and foremost in her abysmal public safety
record and her untruthful flip-flops on issues
such as placing a tax measure before the
voters. Your insistence that our opposition is
solely based on the unlawful Measure B is
inaccurate.
In June, Herrera opposed reinstating the
burglary investigations unit, arguing officers
shouldn’t be pulled from patrol, and said that,
in August, the council would be putting a sales
tax measure on the ballot and could look at
restoring the unit then.
Herrera could have urged the use of
overtime burglary suppression teams. That’s
how the city tries to keep a lid on gang
violence. Then August came and Herrera flipflopped on the sales tax measure. She voted
against it. The council never took up reinstating the burglary investigation unit.
We informed voters that Herrera voted
against supporting proposition 35, which
cracks down on human trafficking.
Herrera joined the entire council and
voted against the council taking a position in
support of proposition 35, even though the
city staff urged support and the Mercury News
recommended that voters approve the proposition. This was typical of Herrera’s disregard
for public safety.
We find ourselves wondering why the
editorial pages were silent when the state fair
political practices commission declared Reed
had violated the law by funneling $100,000 in
campaign cash to assist Herrera.
We’re proud of our support for Jimmy
Nguyen and pleased that he defeated Herrera in the 17 precincts in which our members
walked door-to-door. our members’ integrity,
solidarity and character are strong, and this
paper will not shake that. They have continued to serve despite the turmoil the mayor
has manufactured. It’s time to show them the
respect that they earn every day.
We’re renewing our call for public labor
negotiations. Reed balked at public negotiations, but residents should know who’s serious about finding solutions.
