PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH
Aug. 2,2015
From the Pastor’s Desk Fr. Philip Kollithanath
Pope Francis in the second chapter of his book, “Words of Joy and Life” , talks about the roles of Father and Mother in the family.
Fatherhood and motherhood are gifts from God but it is a task for the recipients to make it shine in the society. Each child is a miracle and a unique creature that will not be duplicated in the history of humanity. A child is a miracle that changes the life of the family.
Following the model of St. Joseph, fathers have to be very close to the children at all times as the guardians of their growth in age, wisdom, and grace. Walk with them on their journey and be their educators.A mother knows what is good for a child, teaches how to
walk through life and to take the right path. She does this with tenderness, affection, and love. Mother’s wisdom comes from her heart.
Like the Church, a mother always wants the good of her children. A mother knows how to balance things and teaches the child how to
face the difficulties of life and how to avoid risky behavior. Mother instils courage into a child and encourages him/her to face
challenges realistically and be responsible. The absent father causes irreparable damage to a child’s growth. Many later delinquencies
can be traced to the absence of love and closeness from father. Children learn principles, values and rules of life from fathers. Father
cannot just be a peer or a companion, but must learn how to be a Father.
Mothers are efficient at work, affectionate and attentive at home. Good fathers always listen to the wisdom of mothers and encourage
children to learn from their selfless devotion. Mother prays incessantly for her children, especially for the weak, the defiant, and the
stray.
Father must be present in the family and stand with the Mother and the children in all the moments of their life. Whether those moments are good or bad, joyful or sorrowful, a father’s patient and supportive presence has a lasting impact on the children’s growth.
This presence is not controlling but of patience, gentleness, magnanimity and mercy. Such a father reflects the heavenly Father whom
Jesus presented in the parable of the “prodigal son” / “merciful father” ( Lk. 15:11-32) who patiently waits and generously forgives and
magnanimous in restoring the lost dignity of his son. Some fathers loose courage and abandon camp because they fail to learn to wait
and receive the grace from the heavenly Father. In short, constant prayer and patient endurance are the secrets of a successful Father or
an exemplary Mother. God bless you all.
Sacrament of Baptism—Baptism is a highly sacred event and deserves careful
and complete readiness. Please contact the church office (336-629-0221 to register for the

TREASURES AND TRADITIONS
Customs surrounding wedding rites are often in tension with our
liturgical tradition. Sometimes practices are almost forced on engaged
couples. Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows how quickly
the invoices expand. A hundred dollars here, a hundred there, often
for non‐essentials, when more deeply traditional practices, like an
expression of charity for the poor, fall by the wayside. One such practice often labeled as “deeply traditional” is the aisle runner for the
bride. Actually, the American tradition is to clean our church buildings, in contrast to European village churches, which often had dirt
or cobblestone floors. There, a band of linen (rented) or a carpet of
flowers might be set in place for a bridal party. Here, plastic roll‐ups
are procured and positioned by the ushers for the bride’s entrance.
The problems are many, not the least of which is that there is no
“bride’s entrance” in our official liturgy. Another is that in a wedding
Mass, the communicants have to navigate the treacherous aisle with
the sometimes-slippery runner. The aisle runner is neither a treasure
nor a tradition, and by omitting it, the couple who asks for canned
goods for the poor to be brought to church at their wedding Mass
will find an extra hundred dollars or so for the cause!

Iglesia De San Jose
July 26 2015

no amigos.
