SUMMARY The future of global oil supply is fraught with challenges and uncertainties. There is no agreement on the availability of resources and reserves, nor on the exact date when the peak of conventional oil production will be reached, although there is a growing consensus that the peak is a real risk that could materialize during the present decade. The picture is disturbing. Once the current period of economic crisis is over, the delicate balance between supply and demand, along with the growing risk of supply disruptions, could increase the tendency to volatility in financial markets, foster the geopolitical game and exacerbate tensions between the major consumers. Ensure those supplies, more and more concentrated in the Middle East, will require huge investments in exploration and production, access to increasingly remote areas and drilling at greater depths. This will bring us inexorably to the end of the era of cheap and abundant oil, with its consequent negative impact on the economy. A new situation that will require a thorough restructuring of the global energy system, particularly in the transportation sector. Finding alternative energy sources to oil is one of the greatest challenges that humanity faces today.
