Vince’s Italian: 50 Years of
Tradition in Southwest Detroit
An enormous “congratulations” is in order
for Vince’s Italian
Restaurant, who on May
20 turned 50 years old.
Founded in 1960 at a
time when Southwest
Detroit secured its position as the “neighborhood that built the car,”
family matriarch Maria
Perfili and her late husband Vincenzo began
selling pizzas out of the
front of their home.
Vince’s flavors quickly
became legendary, and
the establishment
expanded to accommodate its growing popularity. Meanwhile, it
honed and crafted the
finer characteristics of
Italian cuisine and
expanded its menu to
include a variety of
homemade classics.
Located on the
Southwest corner of
Homer and Springwells,
Vince’s now seats over
200 patrons, including a
banquet facility for private parties. Not only is
it still known for its
authentic pizza pie, it is
a sought destination for
superb pasta dishes
made with homemade
pasta and fresh ingredients.
Today, Maria’s
daughter Lidia Improta
and husband Frank,
along with their sons,
operate the business.
Although the neighborhood has changed over
the past 50 years, not

Run/Day of the Dead a Huge Southwest Success
On October 30th the
Southwest Detroit
Business Association
hosted its first annual
Run of the Dead – a race
through Southwest
Detroit. The event was a
huge success with over
500 runners traveling
from all over the region to
enjoy our community.
The race featured two
routes, a 5k and 10k, that
took runners through our
neighborhoods, down
West Vernor, and into
Holy Cross and
Woodmere cemeteries.
The routes were planned
to expose runners to the
vibrancy of Southwest
Detroit, allowing them to
see some of what makes
Southwest Detroit so
great: our great neighborhoods, our thriving business district, and our
proud culture.
Although it took place
a few days before, the
Run was organized as
part of the Day of the
Dead community celebration. Runners taking
part in the race were
given the opportunity to
honor loved ones they had
buried in Woodmere or
Holy Cross cemeteries,
wearing a commemorative ribbon throughout
the day for each loved one
buried in Southwest
Detroit. A complete list
of those family members
interred at each cemetery
was available for all participants to see throughout the day.
As the Race concluded, SDBA quickly
changed gears to focus on
the rest of the Day of the
Dead festivities. On
November 1st, 2nd, and
3rd SDBA and the Matrix
Theatre Company hosted
students for Day of the
Dead themed tours and
workshops. Over 1500
students from 15 different
schools came in for tours
of local establishments,
ofrendas (tribute alters),
restaurants and more and
participated in workshops
that helped teach the significance of the Day of the
Dead celebration.
Schools were taken on
personalized tours
through Southwest
Detroit that highlighted
the strength of our community and business dis-
trict, but also the cultural
significance of the Day of
the Dead. Popular tour
highlights were Ste.
Anne’s de Detroit, Café
con Leche, Mexicantown
and La Gloria Bakeries,
Matrix Theatre and the
Michigan Welcome
Center. At each location,
students could learn
about Southwest Detroit
and see beautiful ofrendas.

“Yo Amo Southwest” Features the Work of Local Photographers
“Yo Amo Southwest” is a
storefront exhibit spearheaded by the Southwest

local artists Erik Howard

about Detroit. The photo
exhibits portray cultural
diversity, respect, community pride, love and
investment in the community”, he continues. Now
when pedestrians stroll

Woodmere. The long-term plan is for the Greenlink to connect eastward to
Downtown Detroit and the West RiverWalk planned by the Riverfront
Conservancy. Other regional bike lanes being planned will also connect to the
Corktown-Mexicantown-West Vernor Greenlink. The Inner Circle Greenway will
connect in from the north; the Downriver Delta Greenway from the southwest; and
the Dearborn Greenway from the west all the way to Canton, Northville, and
Plymounth.
Start tuning up your bike and be ready for a new adventure in Southwest Detroit

susu encias.
En futuras ediciones
le puedo detallar las
teorías y evidencias científicas que conectan las
estados físicos antes mencionado.

may enter the bloodstream through small
ulcers in your gum tissue.
In future issues I can
