Linked Learning Arts, Media and Entertainment Pathway
California is home to the country’s largest entertainment industry, employing nearly 300,000 Californians across

the state. This dynamic job sector requires skilled professionals with creative vision, sharp technical skills and
management know-how. As technology continues to drive advances in film, graphic design, web development and
other creative industries, artistic individuals with technology skills and management experience will be in highdemand from California’s top arts, media and entertainment employers.
About Linked Learning
Linked Learning is a proven approach to education that combines college-focused academics, work-based learning
and integrated student supports. By centering high school around industry themes, learning becomes relevant.
Students in Linked Learning pathways earn more credits in the first three years of high school compared with those
in traditional high schools, and report that their education is more relevant and rigorous. One reason is that Linked
Learning answers the question “Why do I need to learn this?” and inspires students to work harder, dream bigger
and learn more by exposing them to previously unimagined career opportunities.
Four Core Components of Linked Learning
Rigorous academics: Core subjects that prepare all students for college, including A-G coursework
required by California’s public universities and aligned to the common core state standards.
Career-based learning in the classroom: Professional skills and industry-related knowledge woven into
lessons and assignments to give students context for what they’re learning.
Work-based learning in real-world work places: A range of real-world experiences, from mentoring and
job shadowing to internships that expose students to possible career paths.
Integrated student supports: Dedicated support services tailored to the needs of students, such as
counseling and supplemental instruction, that help ensure students are successful in school and life.
Arts, Media and Entertainment Pathway
The arts, media, and entertainment pathway is one of the industry-themed pathways available to Linked Learning
students. Currently, 13 certified pathways have an arts, media and entertainment focus, providing nearly 4,300
California students with the skills and experience they need to grow a successful career in the arts, media and
entertainment industries before they graduate from high school.
In an arts, media and entertainment pathway, students master fundamental academics — verbal, math and
science skills — through the lens of the arts, media and entertainment industry. Communications skills are
exercised through writing scripts, producing videos and publicly presenting projects. Math skills are honed through
developing business plans, budgets and learning technical components of animation, lighting and graphic design.
Group projects that span across different subjects and tackle real-world problems — often for real clients solving
real problems — help build students’ leadership, critical thinking and teamwork skills.
One of the most valuable components of the arts, media and
entertainment pathway is the firsthand interaction students experience
with the field. Internships, job shadows and other workplace learning
opportunities allow students to apply what they learn in the classroom to
real work projects — reinforcing the connection between classroom and
career. Students are able to develop a professional support network and
gain invaluable experience working in a professional environment.
Technology will continuously shape and stretch what skill sets students will
need to tackle for career success, making exposure to cutting edge work in

Linked Learning Engineering and Design Pathway
California is a national leader in natural resource management, clean energy policy, technology innovation and
urban planning. The state’s rapid population growth demands skilled individuals to engineer solutions to improve
overall quality of living for Californians. Currently, more than 315,000 Californians earn a meaningful living in the

engineering field. As the state continues to address its growing energy, transportation and development needs,
professionals with engineering skills will be in high-demand from top private and municipal sector employers.
Engineering and Design Pathway
Engineering and design is one of the industry-themed pathways available to Linked Learning students. Currently,
11 certified pathways statewide have an engineering focus, providing nearly 4,600 California students with the
skills and experience they need to grow a successful engineering and design careers before they graduate from
high school.
In an engineering and design pathway, students master math, science, and verbal academic skills through the lens
of the engineering industry. Communications skills are exercised through writing business plans and presenting
projects. Math and science skills are honed through hands-on projects like constructing model bridges, buildings or
mines. Group projects that span across different subjects and tackle real-world problems — often for real clients
solving real problems — help build students leadership, critical thinking and teamwork skills. Engineering
professionals frequent classrooms to talk about their jobs, career paths and provide mentorship to students.

Health care is one of the biggest job creators in California. Currently, the health care sector employs nearly 1.1

million Californians with health care jobs comprising half of the state’s top 20 fastest-growing occupations.
National health care reform, population growth and an aging population are driving the need for expanding
California’s health care services. Skilled health care professionals are the foundation of any high-quality health
care system and it’s critical our state’s workforce is prepared to fill these meaningful, high wage, in-demand jobs.
Health Care Pathway
Health care is one of the industry-themed pathways available to Linked Learning students. Currently, nine certified
Linked Learning pathways have a health care focus, providing nearly 3,000 California students with the skills and
experience they need to grow a successful career in the health care industry before they graduate from high
school.
In a health care pathway, students master math, science and verbal academic skills through the lens of the health
care industry. Group projects that span across different subjects and tackle real-world problems — often for real
clients solving real problems — help build students’ leadership, critical thinking and teamwork skills. Health care
professionals frequent classrooms to talk about their jobs, career paths and provide mentorship to students.
Regular field trips give students a direct look at different medical facilities and professional settings.
One of the most valuable components of the health care pathway is the firsthand interaction students experience
with the field. Internships, job shadows and other workplace learning opportunities allow students to apply what
they learn in the classroom to real work projects— reinforcing the connection between classroom and career.

Students choose a career -oriented pathway based on one
of California’s 15 largest industries, such as engineering,

Selecting a pathway in high school does not determine a student’s lifelong career path.
Instead it enhances the high school experience by exposing students to a range of
professions, and develops students’ skills and confidence needed for any career. And
many students do find a career path they are passionate about through Linked Learning.
Linked Learning teachers of all subjects collaborate to integrate career-themed lessons into the curriculum. Many pathway teachers
come to the classroom with industry-specific experience and training. Teachers work closely with industry professionals to help
design project-based learning that is relevant to current industry standards and innovations.

Why should you consider Linked Learning as an option for high school?
Linked Learning is a practice that has shown the potential to boost achievement for all students,

counseling and supplemental instruction that help ensure students are successful in school and life.
Proven Success
• Compared with their peers, students in certified Linked Learning pathways earn more credits in
the first three years of high school, report greater confidence in their life and career skills,
and say they are experiencing more rigorous, integrated, and relevant instruction. Linked
Learning students are also more likely to stay in their school district through high
school, indicating that they are less likely to transfer or drop out of school.
• Linked Learning prepares students for a postsecondary education. Many Linked
Learning pathways ensure students successfully complete the necessary a–g
coursework for admission to a four-year public university in California. In fact,
students were 7.9 percentage points more likely to be on track with a–g
requirements at the end of 10th grade.
• Momentum is growing to expand the Linked Learning approach
across California. The State Linked Learning Pilot Program includes
63 participating school districts and county offices of education. CDE,
California Community Colleges and James Irvine Foundation are providing
$7 Million for pilot implementation. The state budget also includes
$250 million for the California Career Pathways Trust, a grant program
incentivizing collaboration between schools and employers to support Linked
Learning pathways and provide work-based learning opportunities for students.
In 2015, a second round of grants through the California Career Pathways
Trust will provide an additional $250 million to district and community college
partnerships across the state.
