16 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 Numerous classic and vintage boats compete in the traditional regatta On Wednesday, the first day of competition, the wind made its appearance at 13.25, just as the umpires signalled the start of race. The regatta kicked off on the twelve-mile coastal route with a south-easterly six to eight-knot wind that gradually veered southwest throughout the day. The boats headed out in groups, first the Classics at 13.25 hours, afterwards the Vintage boats, followed ten minutes later by the last group, the Spirit of Tradition category, which took the start at 13.46. In the classification table of this first stage, The Vintage boat Pesa was first past the finish line. Giraldilla led in the Classic category, and the crew of the Tichiy Don classified in the Sprit of Tradition category. It is worth noting that the competition took place in a friendly atmosphere, with just one minor incident: a dangerous crossing between Madrigal and Pesa heightened the tension of the day’s heat. At the conclusion of the trail, a protest was issued involving the Madrigal, Pesa and Merengue. PESA, ENTERPRISE AND GIRALDILLA LEAD THE TWENTY-FIFTH ADMIRAL COUNT OF BARCELONA TROPHY IN THE SECOND REGATTA A n international representation of more than fifty boats took part in the Admiral Count of Barcelona Trophy, which this year marks its twentyfifth edition. Between 17 and 23 of August, the bay of Palma played host to one of its largest gatherings of classic boats of the entire Mediterranean coast. The regattas took place on the 19, 20, 21 and 22 of August, leaving Sunday 23 for the Grand Parade. category (launched up to 31 December 1949) or in the CLASSIC category (launched between 1/01/1950 and 31/12/1975). Both categories admit the participation of REPLICAS, vessels designed during these periods but launched later, provided they have been constructed strictly according to the original plans and with the same techniques and materials of the period in which they were designed. The event is open to all wooden and steel vessels that, according to their year of construction, are registered in the VINTAGE Faithful to the calendar, Palma de Mallorca’s Maritime Promenade, played host to the vintage boats that compete in the sailing AND THE SEA DRESSED FOR THE OCCASION regatta, all of them boasting more than one added value, since each one of these boats taking part forms a part of yachting history, the most authentic seafaring tradition. The fleet tied up along the Maritime Promenade is one of Palmas most striking scenes of the Mallorcan summer. Together, the boats constitute a veritable floating museum. Yet they are not only valuable achievements of naval engineering. Each vessel requires an exclusive dedication to keep it seaworthy and, in this case, ready for competition, with continuous maintenance of and attention to the tiniest features. One year on, on 19 August, the fleet of the twenty-fifth edition of the Regatta for was led by Pesa, followed by Marigan and Tigris in second and third places respectively. Group B was headed by Enterprise, the first boat in. Lucia held second place and Spirit of Carib third. In group B’s Classic boats, Giraldilla led the division, followed by Stella Polare and Livia. Argos led Group C, followed by Emeraude and Merengue IV second and third respectively. Lastly, in the Spirit of Tradition group Tichiy Don took first place, Hard Ship II second and Seny third. Vintage Boats, Admiral Count of Barcelona Trophy, hoisted their sails in the bay of Palma, true to the spirit of sailing. An incomparably impressive sight to behold. Day two left Pesa leading in the Class A Vintage boat category, Enterprise in class B and Sonata in class C. In the Classic boats category Giraldilla took first place in class B and Merengue IV in class C. The Classic group took the start at 12.55 with a six-knot south-easterly wind -220∫. Fifteen minutes later, the Vintage boats set out, followed after by the Spirit of Tradition. The yachts covered Course Five: from the start line in the bay of Palma, to the Illetes buoy, the western breakwater, Cala Blava and back to the bay of Palma, covering a distance of some 14.1 nautical miles. The first boat to come in - compensated time not taken into account - was the Italian Navy’s Classic Stella Polare. She completed the fourteen-mile course in three hours and ten minutes. The favourable six-knot wind increased in intensity to twelve in some legs of the course, allowing the boats to compete at full sail. It is worth pointing out that this during this twenty-fifth edition of the Admiral Count of The last day of the twenty-fifth Admiral Count of Barcelona began at 12.30. The fleet sailed the whole course, slightly over 19 miles, which started at the Magaluf buoy, continuing to the Illetes buoy and then on to Cala Blava, returning to the bay of Palma. Barcelona Trophy, the races were far more competitive than they were in previous years. The provisional classification differed little from that of the first trial in which Enterprise came in first and took first place in its class. The Blue Peter, owned by Mathew Barker, rose to second place in her category underscoring her candidature for the final victory, in what was an unbeatable day’s sailing. Bruno Gómez-Acebo de Borbón, Don Juan’s grandson, competed aboard Giraldilla, which was the Count of Barcelona’s regatta yacht. GIRALDILLA, PESA AND ENTERPRISE LEAD THE 3RD REGATTA – WITH THE LAST EVENT STILL PENDING Day Three’s regatta commenced with gentle winds which during the day built up to twelve knots and dropped later to seven knots. This consisted of open courses, save the complicated stretch between the western breakwater to Illetes, where the skippers had to prove their prowess. Course one covered 15 nautical miles to a mark buoy; then to Cala Blava, from there to the Illetes buoy, then on to the western breakwater and back to Illetes, finishing the heat at the entrance to the Palma port. The start proceeded without any incident worthy of mention except that Seny lost time after jumping the start. Thus she restarted while the groups were already making headway. It is worth noting that day three saw Wind Liberty, in the Classic category, take the start. Although she was unable to compete in the first two days of the regatta, due to an engine problem, she managed to take third position in her category. At the end of the third heat, the provisional classification of the group A Vintage boats The trial commenced with the local Embat, a regular wind in the Regatta course, blowing at eight knots on the 220∫ (southeast) course. Later, the wind gradually turned eastwards. It was perfect sailing weather on the last day of this traditional regatta, allowing the boats to compete under full sail. The Trophy passed without incident. Crews and boats fiercely competed in a display of rare beauty in the bay of Palma. At the end of the fourth trial of the regatta, Pesa was led in the classification of class A Vintage boats, followed by Marigan and Tigris in second and third places respectively. Enterprise was first past the finish line in class B. Lucia took second place and third place went Spirit of Carib. Sonata won in class C, followed by Mercury, and The Blue Peter in third position. In Group B’s Classic boat class, Giraldilla took first place, Stella Polare was second and Wind Liberty third. Group C finished the regatta thus: Argos, first, Merengue IV, second and Running Tide, third. Lastly, the Spirit of Tradition class was headed by Tichiy Don, with Seny and Hard Ship II second and third respectively. 17 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 Sonata, Giraldilla and Tichiy Don, winners of the Grand Admiral Count of Barcelona trophy in the vintage, classic and spirit of tradition boats respectively XXV Admiral Count of Barcelona Trophy SONATA 19 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 18 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 Ganador de los Trofeos: ALMIRANTE CONDE DE BARCELONA. Jaume Gilabert Presidente de la Diputación de Lleida Lleida, L leida, which occupies a privileged geographical enclave between Barcelona and Madrid, is located in western Catalonia, in NW Spain. It is a well-known destination for those who love mountains, skiing, culture and adventure sports, but it is also a destination which offers a great variety of tourist proposals that are ideal for those looking to spend their holidays with friends or family. This is a territory that visitors can enjoy all year round and the superb natural setting is perfectly complemented by an artistic and cultural heritage of the first order that offers: the charm of villages steeped in history; ageold traditions; active and adventure tourism aimed at the most demanding of clients; tasty gastronomy; and the pleasant nature of its people. In its natural environment, Lleida offers a wide range of scenery. In the high mountains of the Pyrenees, visitors will find nature in its purest state; this is epitomised by the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park –the only National Park in Catalonia- and the Alt Pirineu and CadíMoixeró Natural Parks. In the Pre-Pyrenees, among many other places of interest, visitors will find the Collegats-Terradets Territorial Park, the Boumort Natural Hunting Reserve and the Mont-rebei Gorge. The Lleida Plain offers peaceful landscapes, some of which are rather sober, while others are lush and fertile and covered with century-old olive trees, unspoilt nature and monumental heritage fruit trees and crop fields. Its most spectacular scenery includes: the Ivars and Vila-sana Pool and the Aiguabarreig (confluence) of the rivers Segre, Cinca and Ebro. It should be added that the Lands of Lleida are an exceptional destination for ornithological tourism or birding, as they concentrate the majority of the wide range of birdlife to be found in Catalonia (with some 400 species in total). The comarques (local districts) of Lleida also continue to be Spain’s leading destination for adventure sports with over 159 companies organising around fifty different water, air and land-based activities. Key references include: paragliding, hang-gliding, rafting and canoeing and the territory is a regular venue for European and even World Championship events in many of these sports. Amongst the nature-related activities on offer, trekking is one of the modalities which has gained most new adepts. This has been largely due to the creation of a series of routes that run through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Pyrenees and on the Lleida Plain. There is also an ever rising demand for MTB, which has seen a notable increase in the number of centres spread across the geography of Lleida. There are now over 2,300 km of marked paths and numerous services for cyclists. Lleida is also the market leader in the ski sector: the 11 Lleida resorts, grouped together under the brand “Neu de Lleida“ (“Lleida Snow”), offer 460 km of slopes and more than 30,000 units of officially regulated accommodation at, or near, these winter complexes. The territory’s rich monumental heritage –led by its Romanesque legacy, which finds its maximum expression in the group of churches in the Vall de Boí that were recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2000- is complemented by a wide range of festivals and other cultural and sporting events. It is also important to highlight other initiatives that have added an even wider range of possibilities for visitors. These include: the Centre for Observing the Universe of El Montsec, an ambitious project that combines research and promotion with cultural and scientific tourism; the Lakes Train, a tourist railway that connects the capital of Lleida to the Pre-Pyrenees; various exhibition spaces, such as the Museum of Lleida, the Paper Clothes Museum of Mollerussa, and the Skiing Museum of the Val d’Aran; new itineraries, which are destined to make the natural and cultural wealth of Lleida better known to the outside world (including, the Castles of Sió Route, the Route of the Pyrenean Counts, Nostalgic Pallars, the Wine Route, the Literary Routes of El Pallars, and the Iron Woods Route); and projects aimed at promoting excellent quality tourism, such as the Network of Villages with Charm. Lleida city, the provincial capital, merits its own special mention. It boasts a rich monumental legacy, which includes its Seu 65 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 64 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 Costers del Segre. La Bienvenida - The Welcoming 66 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 In recent years, improvements in communications have helped to strengthen the position of Lleida as a tourist destination of the first order. Amongst them, it is important to highlight a piece of infrastructure that has now become wellconsolidated: the High Speed Train service connecting Lleida to Barcelona and Madrid and, via these destinations, to the rest of Spain. The recently inaugurated LleidaAlguaire airport has also given a tremendous impulse to the local tourism sector as it has placed Lleida within the network of European regional airports and has increased its connectivity with various other parts of the continent. Travelling to Lleida is now easier, faster and comfortable than ever! Vella (Old Cathedral): a jewel of the Romanesque-Gothic period, and the Knights Templar castle of Gardeny. They coexist with the city’s dynamic activity in the organisation of trade and business fairs, which has been reinforced by the addition of such modern facilities as La Llotja, a congress and conference centre which is perfect for hosting professional meetings and major spectacles. WE MUST TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF OUR PROXIMITY W ith a 25 minute flight from Lleida-Alguaire to Palma de Mallorca and vice versa, we can now talk of distances in time rather than kilometres. This flight offers an excellent opportunity to strengthen the ties that unite us with Mallorca and to exchange tourist flows, which is very interesting for both territories. The Lands of Lleida can offer islanders a wide range of attractions. The first is a major change: from an island to an inland Another element that is much appreciated by visitors to Lleida is the local gastronomy. Its salient points are its natural, traditional and tasty character, which are perfectly complemented by the highly regarded wines of the DO Costers del Segre. Throughout the year, the comarques of Lleida also host a number of other activities (festivals, meetings, exhibitions) associated with their rich gastronomic tradition. territory. The second is the contrast between beach and mountain and sun and snow. These are the most generic and relevant tourist icons for arousing mutual interest. We must also stress the tremendous heritage of the Lands of Lleida, whose many attractions include: the Romanesque art and architecture of the Vall de Boí; Lleida’s Seu Vella; the Castles of Sió; natural spaces like the Ivars Pool; the Lakes Train; and the territory’s ornithological and identity tourism. The differences between the attractions of the comarques of Lleida and Mallorca are, without a doubt, elements that make them complementary in terms of tourism. But they can also complement each other with their similarities. For example, our Lake Train is similar to their Tren de Sóller, we both have olive groves, and we could no doubt even find ways of sharing a promotional campaign, through twinning or other types of strategic alliance that focus on our mutual interest. Apart from tourism, there are many other elements that could be used to unite the Lands of Lleida and Mallorca, taking advantage of these flights; for example, flights could be used to promote student exchanges between their universities. In terms of culture, and particularly literature and historic, it is important to stress that we share common roots. We could also develop new areas of mutual interest, such as the organisation of congresses and trade fairs. As institutions, we need organise and facilitate actions that allow us to use the flight connection to develop new touristic perspectives and relationships that will enrich us culturally, socially, economically and touristically. The efforts of institutions like the Patronat de Turisme of the Diputació de Lleida mainly involve providing the private sector with the tools it requires to identify new opportunities and helping it to develop contacts. But it is the private sector that must work with these tools and turn opportunities into realities, because it is the private sector that will receive the greatest benefits from any new commercial relations. We must combine the efforts of all concerned to strengthen our relations and generate new opportunities for the future. I am sure that with the effort and interest that everyone has shown so far, we will achieve our goal. Accompanying the King were the President of the Balearic Parliament, Mª Also in attendance were, among other dignitaries, the Air Sector Chief Carlos de Palma, Naval Sector Chief Francisco Urrutia, Representative of the Ministry of Defence Cristofol Sbert, and the local Minister Dolça Mulet. t eight o’clock sharp, as the sun sank over the horizon, the Award Ceremony of the twenty-fifth Admiral Count of Barcelona Trophy commenced in the courtyard of the Almudaina Royal Palace, beautifully bedecked with a national-heritage Flemish tapestry and honorary banners that underscored the solemnity of the occasion. After the awards were given, Emilio Espinosa, President of the Royal Hispania Foundation took the floor to pay tribute to the trophy’s founder. He recalled that Don Juan de Borbón, through his initiative of founding this Trophy, sought to safeguard an important part of our cultural maritime heritage by rescuing vintage boats from oblivion and returning them to competition. A goal that has been achieved. The president fervently hoped that 2010 would see the completion of the restoration work on the historic yacht “Hispania”, which lends its name to the Foundation, and he thanked Don Marcial, sponsor and guardian of this regatta and others who have collaborated in this undertaking. As in previous events, an environmental protection stand was set up by Asimelec to promote its well-known ìTragamovilî programme, which recycles all kinds of batteries and mobile telephones that the accelerated pace of technology has made obsolete. A tiny square in the centre of the Village, encircled by berthed boats and multipurpose spaces, hosted a well-stocked cafeteria and icecream parlour that in the evenings projected on a huge screen the events of the day’s regatta and put on well-attended food tastings and performances. 81 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 80 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 Amid this enchanting marine setting, these delights from early morning, all served with friendliness and recommendations by the caterer’s attractive hostesses, were a genuine gift. The Suez Canal and other maritime canals 88 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 The Suez Canal and other maritime canals on it. However, throughout the Early Middle Ages, the canal gradually deteriorated until the remnants of the former grandiose works vanished. It is common knowledge that the French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps undertook the task to build a maritime canal that would allow navigation between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, although he was not the first to try . The Egyptian Pharaohs made several attempts to build canals suitable for the navigable transit between the River Nile and the Red Sea. From the 15th century, the Venetians maintained active trade links, shipping goods to the Orient via Egypt and the Red Sea. After the Portuguese discovery of eastern routes around the African continent, further attempts to find a new trade route proved fruitless. The main source of information herein comes from a work published in 1953 by Antonio Quintano Ripollés. Quintano, a Magistrate of the International Court of Sarre and Cairo, is the author of, among other works, “El Canal de Suez”, a book I was fortunate to acquire more than thirty years ago and which, in my modest opinion, is very interesting. It was published in 1953 jointly by Superior Council of Scientific Investigations and the Navy Ministry. Further to Quintano’s information and other sources, I also refer to a work published by Lloyd’s List in 1984. The first undertaking to link the Red Sea to the Mediterranean is attributed to Leibniz, who in 1671 submitted a report thereof to Louis XIV of France and Cardinal Richelieu. Subsequently Napoleon Bonaparte, during his stay in Egypt, learned of the ancient canals dug by the Egyptian pharaohs (Napoleon’s expedition was made up of eminent scientists including Jacques Marie Le Père, who in 1799 drafted a report on the work needed to dig a canal, in which he erroneously concluded that the Red Sea was 10 metres above the level of the Mediterranean). As a result of this finding, the project was abandoned owing to the high costs it would have entailed. PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS UNDERTAKEN BY THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS The first project to build a navigational canal between the Nile and the Red sea was carried out around 2000 B.C. by Pharaoh Senusret II of the 12th Dynasty. According to Casson, “[he] opened up a canal at the northern end of the Nile towards the Red sea. So that shipping would saved time and great effort in transferring goods along the arduous caravan routes”. This canal subsequently became blocked with the passage of time. Thousands of years later, in the 7th century B.C., Pharaoh Necho of 26th Dynasty embarked on an ambitious scheme to dig a canal from Lake Timsah to the Red sea. Herodotus, known as the Father of History (Euterpe 158), points out that its construction cost the lives of 120,000 slaves and that “The length of this canal is equal to a four-day voyage, and it is wide enough to admit two triremes abreast. The water enters it from the Nile, a little above the city Bubaatis : it terminated in the Erythrean Sea, not far from Patumos, an Arabian town”. This canal was later improved by the Ptolemaic Dynasty during the reign of Philadelphus and Euergetes, and subsequently, the Emperor Trajan carried our further work It is also important to note that the British Royal Navy commanded by Nelson defeated the French at Aboukir Bay on 1 August 1798. After the defeat, a peace deal was signed in 1802 between the two countries at Amiens and the plan to build the canal recommenced with difficulties. Britain, the most powerful nation in the world at the time, opposed the plan. Because of Le Père’s error, the technical commission opted once again for the old solution of the combined Pharaonic route through the Nile and the Red Sea, which would make the work far more expensive. In 1841, a number of engineers discovered that the canal outlets of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea had the same level, therefore the solutions that had been adopted following Le Père’s miscalculation no longer made any sense. As a result, in 1846, the Societe d´Etudes of the Suez Canal endorsed engineer Talabot’s plan for the canal, which would stretch from Suez to Alexandria via Cairo. FERDINAND DE LESSEPS Ferdinand de Lesseps, born at Versailles on 19 November 1805, came from an old French family originating from Touraine that was related to the Montijos, a Spanish family of noble stock. However, it is not true that he had an affair with his cousin Eugenia de Montijo, the Empress of France and wife of Napoleon III, as an old American film would have us believe. He entered the French consular service as an attaché and was posted first to Lisbon and thereafter to Tunis and to Alexandria. Between 1832 and 1837 he was French consul at Cairo, and received the Cross of the Legion of Honour. He served as consul in several cities including Barcelona, which has a square named after him. He also worked as a French minister in Madrid. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact date when Lesseps came up with the idea to build the Suez Canal, given that the sources consulted do not agree. The reaction of European politicians to 89 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 The Suez Canal is a man-made waterway that saves shipping thousands of miles of maritime crossing between Europe and Asia. The Suez Canal and other maritime canals 90 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 In 1858, the canal company issued 400.000 shares at a nominal value of 500 francs each. Eight thousand shares went to France and Great Britain respectively; 64.000 to the Egyptian government; 40,000 to the AustroHungarian empire, 30.000 to Denmark, 24,000 to Russia, and 20.000 each to the United States and Portugal. Spain received no shares, although it later acquired 4,161 shares. Lesseps’ idea was divided between those in favour, the “canalists”, primarily comprising the French and a few Austrians, such as Negrelli, and more importantly, the Egyptian Linan Bey, and the advocates of an Alexandria- Suez railway line, which was led by the British engineer Stephenson and, as Antonio Quintano notes, backed by the British government, which favoured its economic interests without risking its political interests. Lesseps, involved in the canal solution, took no part in the controversy. In 1854, Lesseps was holidaying at the family’s castle of Chesnaye (Touraine) when he received news of Abbas I’s untimely death. The king was succeeded by his uncle Mohamed Said, the son of Mohamed Ali, a close friend of Lesseps. Lesseps immediately departed for Egypt and three weeks later reached Alexandria. The new monarch, Mohamed Said, received him with great affection and accommodated him in one of his villas as a guest at the crowning celebrations of the Viceroy. Soon afterwards, Lesseps had the opportunity to present his canal scheme before the Viceroy and a qualified entourage. Lesseps describes the meeting thus: “I placed the project before him, without going into too many details and repeated the arguments from my memorandum, which I knew by heart. “Mohamed Said listened with evident interest to what I explained and I requested him to ask me questions concerning anything that was not altogether clear. With considerable intelligence, Mohamed Said responded with some objections to which I was able to reply victoriously; whereupon he said, ‘I’m convinced of your plan; we need to reach an agreement, during the remaining time of this expedition, on the details to execute the scheme; naturally you may consider the matter settled and place your trust in me’. “Immediately thereafter, Mohamed Said summoned his generals and repeated our conversation in my presence, asking for their opinion on the proposal of his ‘friend’, as I was honoured to be called. The generals unanimously raised their hands above their heads in consent. Thus my plan was approved”. It only remained to ascertain the opinion of the European governments. Britain, the first power to learn of the astounding news, made her position known by word of mouth through Bruce, its consul general in Egypt, declaring to the Viceroy that “Her Majesty’s government viewed the enterprise as unfeasible and was utterly opposed to it”. The Turkish government, whose imperial ratification was an indispensable legal requirement to guarantee the concession granted sub conditione by the Viceroy, had yet to lend an opinion on it too. And, given that the British ambassador, Lord Stratford de Redclife, was that country’s official arbiter, Anglo-Turkish opposition steadily grew and the warnings and even threats against the canal project increased. Despite everything, in 1854, the Viceroy signed the provisional concession, which in two years would become definitive and which attributed to Ferdinand de Lesseps ‘my friend, of noble linage and high rank’ the right to set up a mercantile company under the name of “Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez” with the objective of cutting the isthmus and building a navigable waterway between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, with access ports at either end. The work was undertaken and funded solely by the Company. The work commenced on 25 April 1859 on the land nearest to what would later become Port Said. On 18 March 1869, it reached the Red Sea and the Bitter Lakes. The construction work required some 25,000 fellahin (Egyptian land serfs). A fresh water supply channel was built along the Suez Canal, although during the construction work some 6,000 camels transported 4,000 kegs of water for the workers. Fernando de Lesseps personally opened the sluices of the dike, crying “In the name of His Highness Mohammed-Said, I order, by the grace of God, that the waters of the Mediterranean flow into Lake Timsah.” Regrettably Mohamed Said was unable to attend the canal’s opening as he had died on 18 January 1863. The opening ceremony was attended by more than six thousand people and many dignitaries from the European scene, including the empress of France, Eugenia de Montijo, the Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph and the Prince of Wales. At the same time, Verdi’s opera “Aida” was premiered at the Cairo opera house. The building of the Suez Canal would now save shipping between 44 and 63% distance, depending on the ports of departure and destination, by no longer having to sail round the Cape of Good Hope. The Suez Canal is 161 Kilometres long, up to 13 metres deep and between 60 and 100 metres wide. Every day some seventy-two ships cross it, making it the world’s busiest commercial shipping waterway. Much of the canal has a single lane, while some stretches have parts for two-way navigation. A railway line runs in parallel along the entire length of the Canal’s eastern bank. Hago un llamamiento a todos los armadores para ver si podemos unir esfuerzos e ideas y algún día equipararnos con nuestros vecinos. moment that you recall as much as the regattas themselves Jordi, tell me about the regattas Mercury and Sonata were designed as recreational boats. However, both boats have several special features that make them very competitive for racing against other vessels of similar length. This means we can compete and have fun, whether we choose to race or have a simple outing. It’s thrilling to compete against yourself or against part of the family, as going out with two boats compels us to split up. 96 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 Tanit, what’s your role aboard? Lending a hand in anyway I can. Sometimes I’m a trimmer or mastman. I also help out on the bow, or when we’re sailing windward I hand out water to keep the crew refreshed and focused. I always have something to do, especially during the spinnaker gybes, but you can’t be in three places at once, tightening the backstay, lowering the spinnaker or being the gofer, which is my favourite task. A fter the conclusion of the twenty-fifth Admiral Count of Barcelona trophy, we joined the Cabau family, the owners of the vintage boats Mercury and Sonata, which have both been outright winners of the prestigious Trophy on two occasions. Sitting at the bow of the Mercury we chatted with Jordi Cabau, his wife Heidi, two of their daughters Lara and Tanit and their son-in-law James, all of them crew members of the two boats. Jordi, where does your and the family’s interest in the sea come from? I was born and grew up Barcelona on the Mediterranean. I’ve lived on the four Balearic Islands as well as in the Canaries, so it’s only natural that the sea runs in my blood. And I have passed this down to my family. In one way or another we have always had ties with the sea – we’ve used all sorts of craft, from rowing boats, windsurf boards, hobbycats, jet-skis, to launches and sailing boats, and we’ve practised a variety of water sports, such as water-skiing, fishing, scuba diving, etc. Living in the Balearic Islands has offered us the good fortune of sailing marvellous waters. What attracted you to sailing, and specifically to classic boats? After my grandfather retired when I was a child, he used to spend his time building models of classic boats. He even made the parts himself to improve them, I think that this had an influence on me. Today, two generations later, those models drew me to two real boats, which have been restored under my supervision, The wood, varnishes, bronze fittings and especially the exclusive lines of these boats are unrivalled. You have to sail in them to really understand what I mean. How did the whole family become involved in the regatta and restoration projects? I knew nothing about them when I bought the Mercury. My yearning to own a vintage boat led some mistakes that I’ve since rectified. By mistakes I mean was Javier Gonzalez, who introduced us to the exhilarating world of the regattas. Heidi adds, we were all excited by the idea of buying this boat, but we’d have never suspected that it would take two years to make her seaworthy. We’re overjoyed with her. There’s chemistry between the boat and the family that makes us feel very secure when we’re sailing her; it’s Mercury’s way of saying thank you. something of a layman when I purchased a boat of this type. I knew nothing about her state or about restoration processes. Fortunately, I met some several people who helped to make this project a reality, especially the master of shipwright, Mateo Grimalt who restored both Mercury and the Sonata to their original splendour, and Heidi, what sets this boat apart from the others? I like her to look impeccable. The first thing I do when I go on board is to wind up the antique Chelsea clock in the lounge. I love having fresh flowers and, of course, a large basket of fresh fruit aboard. These things liven up the boat; it’s these little details that personalise the surroundings. When we’re racing, we usually have breakfast together in the lounge and take time out to talk about our things. After the regatta when we have stowed everything away, we love to unwind, take a bath and relax with a drink and discuss the regatta. Dinner aboard with the entire crew is a special Lara, what makes these boats so special Two years ago when I was working in New York my parents came over with my sister Tanit to see me. We spent a week in the city and decided to hire a car and drive to Boston, although my father really wanted to visit the boatyards of Sam Crocker, the designer of the Mercury, and of John Alden, the designer of Sonata. We spent one of the best days since we bought Mercury, as we stopped by the village of Marbelhead, where the owner who commissioned her had had the boat moored in front of his house for thirty-five years. Then we went to the Sam Crocker boatyard, where we met his great-grandson who still continues the business. Jordi, what do you think of the Spanish fleet of vintage boats? I’m happy to see that the number of boats participating in the regatta gradually grows, and that many owners like me are very passionate about it. I also want to mention the Royal Hispania Foundation for its supreme effort in recovering one of the jewels of the crown. Without a doubt, the Hispania will become the flagship of the fleet when she is put to sea. We hope that day is near and I encourage everyone involved in the project to double their efforts to achieve it. Do you think the public and private institutions are committed to classic sailing? The private instructions are, though not many of them. The most active is the Royal Hispania Foundation with its prestigious Admiral Count of Barcelona trophy, which is now entering its twentysixth year. There is also the noteworthy involvement of the Palma Royal Sailing Club with its section for classic boats in Palma Vela, as well as the Barcelona Royal Sailing Club with its prestigious Puig Trophy, and the Mahón Maritime Club with the King’s Cup, which we expect to be held once again this year. Regarding public institutions, the administration seems to show little interest in the subject, but we would always be grateful to receive more support for the owners of these types of boats. Let’s see if happens one day. Does Spain embrace classic sailing in the same way other countries do? Evidently not. For the last seven years we’ve been taking part in the Mediterranean circuit that’s held in the waters off Italy, France and Spain. The number of boat owners far exceeds what we have here. By way of example, there are only two boats flying the Spanish flag in those regattas. The four-day Italian Imperia regatta has some 30,000 spectators and gets ample television coverage. The same occurs in France and specifically in Les Voiles of Saint Tropez, where the number of classic boat participants surpasses the one hundred mark. What do you propose we should do to match those countries? First I would try to reach an agreement with everyone, clubs, organisations, federations, boat owners and sponsors to 97 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 The Cabau family, a sailing saga The Cabau family, a sailing saga 98 FUNDACIÓN HISPANIA’10 organise a Spanish circuit. Specifically the triangle formed by the cities of Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza, Palma and Mahón. Each city would set up a regatta with a calendar that would allow boat owners to follow a specific order. It’s as simple as what the AFYT does in France, or the AIVE in Italy. Apart from that each organisation would organise its city’s regatta as it sees fit. I’d like to see all boat owners join forces and exchange ideas, and one day we will be able to do the same as our neighbours. James, when did you start out in classic yachting and tell us something about it? I’m Irish, from the seaport of Cork, but I didn’t begin sailing until I met my wife Vanessa ten years ago. The Mercury was bought while we were dating. It’s great fun to have the whole family involved in these projects. We’re even thinking of adding to the crew our first son Marc, who’s four years old. One experience I’ll never forget was the first time we crossed the Gulf of Leon with Jordi. It was my first long voyage. That was five years ago in early October. We were returning from the last regatta of the season in Saint Tropez. We’d been at sea for more than forty-eight hours and we’d already had the odd spell of rough sea. At last, at about six in the evening, we sighted the northern coast of Mallorca and we all assumed we were arriving. Having telephone coverage makes you feel you’re already home. Little did I know that it would take some ten hours more sailing to reach the Bay of Palma? The sunset was spectacular, but we could already make out some ¨caps de fitbló¨ (a sea tornado) on the horizon. Round one in the morning, we could see Dragonera lighthouse when the storm blew up. It was a dark and it began to pour down, the rain against our faces felt like pinpricks and it was blowing a gale force wind. We had time to make a second reef, and after that I only recall that for twenty minutes everything was wind, water and lightning flashes, so many that it looked like a disco strobe light, illuminating the faces of the four crew members like x-rays. Suddenly a chill ran through me, there was a dull sound, followed by an enormous boom: lightning had struck the mast. The electronic systems shut down and only the light of the old binnacle was still working. Jordi gripped the wheel and told me in a low voice, “James, stay calm, it will soon pass and we’ll reach home”. There followed a dead silence onboard, and gradually the storm lifted, and we once again we were able to make out the Dragonera lighthouse. Since that day I have felt completely secure in Mercury. Jordi, to conclude, tell me little about that chemistry onboard that you mentioned earlier We have a very special case. I believe there are few boats crewed by families and friends that take part in so many regattas. Sometimes it’s amazing to see boats sailed by America’s Cup crews come in behind us. We’ve always been a small group of friends and the family that have participated in various regattas. Aboard we are all equal and the victories are merit of the entire crew, as are the defeats. Whenever someone new joins the crew, I always say the same thing: people’s safety first, the boat’s safety second, and, whenever possible, do things right to win the regatta third. I mustn’t forget to mention some of our friends and crew, Javier Gonzalez, skipper, Xisco Gil tactician, trimmer and sails, Javier Torres tactician, Felipe Gayastegui, trimmer, Javier del Moral bow, as well as a group of friends who regularly form part of the crew: Mateo Grimalt and his son Benito, Llorens, and several others. Lastly it would not be the same aboard without my family, my wife Heidi, my daughters Lara, Tanit, Vanessa and her husband James, all of whom form the backbone of the crew. Each one of them is versatile and perfectly acquainted with the boat’s manoeuvres. We could have continued talking a long time, since the more we spoke, the more tales the Cabau had to tell, but we will leave it for another time. I left the boat feeling satisfied with the experience and with the promise to go sailing with them.
