¡Salud!San Antonio Promoting Healthy Lives among Latinos Volume 4 that she’s no longer smoking. And she just keeps going. “My car doesn’t stink anymore. Before, people who didn’t smoke would get into my car and say, ‘It smells awful in here – let’s change cars!’ And I would feel so embarrassed. I mean, it really did smell in my car. Everything smelled.” Her life has changed since she stopped smoking. “I just feel, I don’t know, I just feel happy,” she says. “I just feel, I don’t know, I just feel happy.” Ask Estefanía Evia Villareal the best thing about not smoking any more and she’ll give you a variety of answers, beginning with the way she feels every morning when she wakes up. “First of all,” she says, “that feeling of being fresh – being clean, fresh, the smell of my sheets and my clothes, (the feeling in) my mouth, my throat.” Then she goes into the positive effect on her health – how she walks for an hour three times a week and works out at a gym every day now As a smoker, she says, “you always feel something in your throat in the mornings. And that morning, it stopped. “My hair, my clothes, everything – I felt really good. And I said, yes, how awesome! I felt really great.” The evenings without a cigarette were rough, but it was the feeling of waking refreshed and happy that kept her from smoking. Estefanía, 21, recently graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio with a degree in marketing and now works for an insurance company. She plans to get her teaching certificate so she can eventually teach elementary school children. “It’s one day at a time,” Estefanía said. “After a while you get used to it, like everything.” She had been a smoker for the past five years, beginning when she was a 16-year-old high school student because her best friend smoked. “I want to tell her it doesn’t make sense, because she’ll leave it (eventually),” says Estefanía. “It’s better to leave it now. I mean, why put toxins in your body? You’re young, you’re only 16. I tell her that if I could go back I wouldn’t (start smoking). That’s the truth.” Earlier this year she decided to kick the habit. It took a little while and there were some stops and starts, but when she finally quit smoking, she did it one day at a time. Now she’s working to influence her little sister, who has started smoking, just as Estefanía did, at the age of 16. After the first few days, she noticed a difference in the way she felt when she woke up in the morning. “Me siento, no sé, me siento feliz”, dice ella. “Me siento, no sé, me siento feliz.” Me sentí realmente increíble”.
