From our Pastor, Fr. Michael Shanahan
This week continued with our ongoing discussion of the book entitled: The Catholic Vision
for Leading Like Jesus. When people hear this title
they may turn away because they think of Jesus as a
“nice guy” who might not be able to have impact on
our extremely competitive and sophisticated society. They are thinking of leadership according to
the corporate or political models that we experience
everyday. The leadership and power we normally
see depends on the use of power to control others.
But remember that Jesus was able to attract followers who would eventually give their lives for
him. He was enormously powerful in the disciples’ lives but it was in a very special way.
Modern researchers are beginning to see that the
life and ministry of Jesus show the meaning of
true leadership. His leadership is different and
far more demanding. Our Responsorial Psalm
reminds us that God speaks clearly, mightily and
majestically. Are you being called to a new level of
leadership in your life in 2011? In our gathering,
we shared about people who have been effective
leaders for us and what they have taught us. You
are invited to this ongoing discussion on the First
Friday of each month. We gather for Mass and the
discussion follows.

Esta semana continuamos con la discussion del
libro La Visión Católica de Liderazgo como Jesús.
Cuando la gente escucha el título puede que lo rechacen porque piensan de Jesús como un “buen tipo” y
que puede que no tenga impacto en nuestra sociedad
que es extremadamente competitiva y sofisticada.
Estamos pensando en liderazgo según el modelo de
la corporaciones o de los partidos políticos que vemos a diario. El liderazgo y poder que normalmente
vemos es usado para controlar a otros. Pero recuerden que Jesús atrajo seguidores que eventualmente dieron su vida por El. Jesús fue enormemente poderoso en la vida de sus discípulos, pero
de un modo muy especial. Los investigadores
modernos están comenzando a ver que la vida y
ministerio de Jesús muestra el significado del
verdadero liderazgo. Su liderazgo es diferente y
mucho más demandante. Nuestro Salmo responsorial nos recuerda que Dios habla claramente,
poderosamente y majestuosamente. ¿Eres tú llamado
a un nuevo nivel de liderazgo en tu vida para el
2011? En nuestras reuniones hablamos sobre gente
que han sido líderes efectivos para nosotros y lo que
aprendemos de ellos. Uds. están invitados a unirse a
la discusión contínua que se hace el primer viernes
de cada mes. Nos juntamos para la misa y luego continuamos con la discusión.
Today we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus by
John the Baptist. This singular event initiates the
worldly ministry of Jesus. Notice in the weeks
ahead that we will begin hearing about his style of
leadership with the new disciples. It is significant
that John the Baptist does the baptizing. The essence of John’s message is that we are called to repent. Repentance means several things but one way
to understand it as that we are called to a change of
mind and heart, to re-evaluate our intentions. This
is familiar to us because we can change our minds
and hearts in many ways everyday. The message of
the baptism of Jesus is that we are called the beloved sons and daughters of God. We are
“beloved”. We can only hear that message in a personal way IF we have had a change of heart and are
open to the message. The Baptism we received
many years ago is the same as that of Jesus. May
we experience in a new and vibrant way that we are
the beloved of God. This is the only message that
brings fruitfulness into our lives.
Hoy celebramos el Bautizo de Jesús por Juan
Bautista. Este evento singular inicia el ministerio de
Jesús en el mundo. Fíjense en las semanas que vienen cuando oiremos sobre su estilo de liderazgo con
los nuevos discípulos. Es significativo que Juan
Bautista hizo el bautismo. La esencia del mensaje de
Juan es todos estamos llamados a arrepentirnos. El
arrepentimiento tiene varios significados y un modo
de entenderlo es que se nos pide un cambio de mente
y de corazón, de re-evaluar nuestras intenciones.
Esto suena familiar porque podemos cambiar nuestras mentes y corazones en muchos modos cada día.
El mensaje del bautismo de Jesús es que todos somos
llamados comos los hijos e hijas queridos de Dios.
Somos “amados.” Y solo podemos oir este mensaje
de modo personal SI cambiamos nuestros corazones
y nos abrimos a su mensaje. El bautismo que recibimos hace muchos fue el mismo que el de Jesús. Que
podamos experimentar un modo nuevo y vibrante de
ser amados por Dios. Este es el único mensaje que
trae frutos en nuestras vidas.

Participate in the World Youth Day to be
celebrated in Madrid, Spain in August 2011,
from the 15th to the 21st. It is the international celebration of the youth of the Catholic Church and their
meeting with our Pope, Benedict XVI.
There will be cultural programs and catechesis
sessions, with the welcoming of the Pope on Cibeles
Square, Madrid on Aug. 18th.

Roe v. Reason
On Jan. 22, 1973, in Roe v. Wade, the United
States Supreme Court declared that an unborn child
enjoys no constitutional protection before he or she
emerges from the womb. Even after viability, the
fetus in utero counts only as “potentiality of human
life,” and can therefore be destroyed for broadly defined maternal health reasons, amounting virtually to
abortion on request, right up to birth! Location—in
or out of the womb— thus determined whether actual human life existed and was worthy of protection
under the Roe v. Wade ruling.

The Women’s Center Bulletin
January 22nd marks the 38thth anniversary of the legalization of abortion, which has resulted in the death of
nearly 53 million innocent, unborn babies in this country,
one every 30 seconds. We can only estimate how
many women have undergone tremendous suffering because of their abortions. The Women’s
Center is a pregnancy resource center which has
saved approximately 34,000 babies and their
mothers from the pain of abortion in our 26 years
of service. We offer them a choice other abortion and provide counseling, material assistance
and prayer support.
We need volunteers, especially on Saturdays. For more
information please call 773-794-1313.
We desperately need diapers in sizes newborn, 4, 5
and 6. We also need maternity clothes, especially for
winter, winter coats for all in the family and boy’s winter
clothing size 6 and up. We also need baby cribs. Mattresses, bumper pads, strollers and baby furniture. It
would be greatly appreciated if you bring these items to
the Women’s Center, at 5116 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago.
