MOTHER´S COURAGE ATALAYA co-production with National´s theatre Award 2008 CENTRO TNT - Avd. It’s a play which places itself within the context of a war, but it does not denounce war alone- it denounces the human attitude of fighting for a way of life in which profit is the most important thing, even at the cost of sacrificing one’s own existence, and the existence of one’s nearest and dearest. The play makes the audience ask themselves what they would do in such times of crisis, similar to the difficult times in which we are currently living. As a result, it is an astonishingly current piece, perhaps even more relevant to our times than the time in which it was written, just before the Second World War broke our. Bertolt Brecht here demonstrates an extraordinary vision, not only of his time, but also of the future which corresponds to the modern-day. It is, without a doubt, the most important play by the German writer, and one of the most emblematic texts of the 20th century. The part of Mother Courage has been played by well-known actresses, from Helene Weigel (directed by Brecht himself), Anna Magnani (in the cinema version, “Mamma Roma”, directed by Pasolinni), Simone Signoret, Glenda Jackson, Liv Ullman, Hanna Schygulla and Meryl Streep at a world-renowned level, as well by Vicky Peña and Mary Carrillo in Spain. Despite having been transformed into a classic of modern world theatre, in Spain the play has barely toured outside of Madrid or Barcelona. Atalaya is taking responsibility for correcting this, as the company did in 2006 with significant succes when it staged Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera” The musical toured nearly 40 Spanish provinces, winning excellent reviews and obtaining the Canal Sur Prize in 2007 for Best Andalusian Show. CENTRO TNT - Avd. Parque de Despeñaperros, 1 41015 – Sevilla 660974770 distribució[email protected] www.atalaya-tnt.com The play ran until the beginning of 2009, when the economic crisis started to hit Spain. In 2014, with the crisis having a significant impact, we are returning to the playwrite who knew how to analyse social problems so well. In the interval between these two shows, Atalaya has regained their most charismatic actress, Carmen Gallardo, cofounder of the group in 1983 and the actress whose own interpretation of Celestina has been highly praised by reviews far and wide. Acting next to her are six actors, who also acted in “the Threepenny Opera”, a play which places as much importance on the musical aspect as “Mother Courage and her Children”. Again, the songs are played live, in some cases accompanied by music played by the actors in the show. Putting on this show was one of my dreams since taking part in a theatre director’s laboratory in1985 in the Berliner Ensemble, learning the Brechtian technique from some of his closest collaborators. Without such an intense training period we would not have taken the leap into “When Five Years Pass” or “Hamletmachine”. Three decades later, this staging is the perfect way to commemorate the thirty years of Atalaya’s existence. CENTRO TNT - Avd. Parque de Despeñaperros, 1 41015 – Sevilla 660974770 distribució[email protected] www.atalaya-tnt.com SYNOPSIS Based on “Landstörtzerin Courasche” by Grimmelhausen, the action takes place between 1624 and 1636, during the 30 Years’ War, a bloody confrontation between Catholics and Protestants which bloodied Sweden, Poland and Germany. Here is where we meet Anna Fierling, a bric-a-brac seller known as Mother Courage, for the value that she appears to have on the battle field. Oportunistic, cynical, sure of herself, Anna goes from one place to another, changing her flag. Her goal is to survive, to do well out of the war and to protect her three children. There is a conflict between the staunch fight to protect her children and her commercial concerns. The necessity or desire to ‘defend herself´in the commercial sphere impedes her ability to protect her children, because war imposes restrictions. At the end of the play, alone and in the deepest misery, she leaves her battered trader’s cart, to continue to ‘protect herself’ from a world in ruines, in which she is just another victim. As Bertolt Brecht said, “War is a continuation of business by other means, but in war big businesses don’t make people humble and in war human virtues turn into morals”. A quote which is applicable to our times, times in which a battle is being fought between those who exercise financial power and the bigger part of the population who are at their mercy. CENTRO TNT - Avd. Parque de Despeñaperros, 1 41015 – Sevilla 660974770 distribució[email protected] www.atalaya-tnt.com STAGING To direct this spectacle was one of my dreams since I took part in a laboratory for stage´s directors in the Berliner Ensemble, learning the Brechtian´s technique thanks to his closest coworkers. Without this intense period of training I could not be able to take the leap with Así pasen cinco años or Hamletmaschine. Three decades later, this show provides the perfect way to commemorate the 30 years of Atalaya. Carmen Gallardo, co-founder of the group in 1983, whose incarnation of Celestina is getting the most laudatory adjectives by critics wherever she goes, plays the main character. Beside her, six actors, will take part in this staging and already participated in "Opera ..."; as then, is critical of the show's musical section. Again, the songs are very important, in some cases, live music is performed by the actors themselves. The staging of the show bet from beginning to end, for the appearance of the actors and, also, the proximity of the audience, who are delivered in the same stage sitting down next to the cast. Through the power of images, the crudeness of the text and musical quality, this spectacle is, perhaps, one of the most emotional´s shows that Atalaya´s carried out in these three decades.
