There are so many special occasions this month – in fact, as March unfolds each of us will notice sure signs of steady progress toward spring – and beyond! For example, we’re excited about the 175th anniversary on March 9th of the famous decision by the U.S. Supreme Court restoring freedom to the Amistad mutineers, an event seen as the literal and figurative start of the civil rights movement in this country. 12th Saturday, March features a rare – and free – New Haven performance of the U.S. Navy Band at Yale’s historic Woolsey Hall. That weekend also marks the annual change to Daylight Savings Time, when we must all remember to move clocks ahead one hour so we stay on schedule the rest of the month. The next day, Sunday, March 13th, New Haven will again host the St. Patrick’s Day Parade – ahead of the holiday itself March 17th. This parade is a standing tradition in our city and a great reason to bring family members and friends out for an afternoon of pageantry and excitement. The spring equinox will occur the third Sunday, March 20th, just as our patience with winter is exhausted, and then March 27th is Easter Sunday for all those who observe. At the end of the month, on March 30th, The British Art Center at Yale will re-open after a 15 months-long, spectacular renovation, and we’re looking forward to that as well. Have a great month! Que tengan un gran mes! Mayor Toni N. A er going to court to recover her son, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. The next twenty‐six years of Sojourner's life was spent in the State of Michigan, where she was bought and sold four different mes. In the first twenty‐nine years of her life she served as a slave in New York, performing demanding physical labor in her teens. She married another slave and raised several chil‐ dren. Sojourner, born with the name Isabella gave herself another name, Sojourner Truth, in 1843. Her best known speech was delivered extemporaneously in 1851 at the Ohio Women's Rights Conven on in Ak‐ ron, Ohio. The Speech became widely known during the Civil War, by the tle "Ain't I A Woman?" While in NY State, Sojourner joined various religious revivals and in the 19th Century, she became a powerful charisma c speaker. In 1843, Sojourner had a spiritual breakthrough and declared that the spirit called on her to preach the truth, as a result, that was when she changed her name. "Sojourner was also, an evangelist who applied her religious fervor to the aboli onist and women's rights movement Although Sojourner never learned to read nor write, with the help of friends, she pub‐ lished her life story and beliefs in 1850, In the Narra ve of Sojourner Truth." "In 2014, Sojourner was included in the Smithsonian magazine’s list of the "100 Most Significant Ameri‐ cans of her me." She had been, also, inducted into the Na onal Women’s Hall of Fame in New York State." Contribu ng to this ar cle included Wikipedia and Famous Black Women: They Showed Us the Way.
