Stewardship Reflections
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and
the door will be opened to you.” Luke 11:9
Jesus assures us that if we ask Him, God will take care of
what we need. The problem is that in our culture we
often confuse what we really need with what we simply
want. Many people need very little. However, we
usually want so much more. A good steward only asks
God for what he needs.

Reflections by Father Karl
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The readings this week challenge us to seriously consider what we really believe about God: is God
merciful or not? The first reading from Genesis seems to say that God is capable of anger and wrath.
This reading also stands in stark contrast to the second reading and the Gospel.
Genesis speaks of God’s wrath and anger. Abraham was forced to manipulate God into not vengefully
destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. We have to ask, is this our vision of God? What is the
“wrath of God?” What do we believe in our heart of hearts? Have we passively accepted a vision of a
god who is ready to condemn and punish?
When we look at the second reading and the Gospel we get a very different picture of God. St. Paul
talks about when “(we) were dead in transgressions…he (God) brought you (us) to life along with him.”
In the Gospel we hear Jesus say;
“What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion
when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good things to your children,
how much more will the Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”
Which version of God is accurate? Is God condemning and harsh or is He forgiving and generous?
Jesus makes it clear that God is indeed merciful and understanding and always willing to give. The
abundance of God’s love for us is beyond human understanding.
We often experience difficulty because we forget that while we are created in God’s image the opposite
is not true: God is not created in our image. God is not subject to all the human faults that are integral
to fallen human nature. Have confidence in God’s mercy!
Dios misericordiosos o no?
Evangelio escuchamos a Jesús decir:

VBS Thanks you…
The children and volunteers of this year's
Vacation Bible School: Our Fantastic Four St.
Luke the Evangelist would like to express our
thanks and gratitude to our St. Bartholomew faith
family. This week we made an exciting
imaginative journey of faith with the Gospel of St.
Luke. Our fifty-six children ages 5 to 12, with eight
Faith Lesson Leaders, and the able assistance of
thirty-two middle and high school youth
experienced the stories of St. Luke in a fun and
informative way. Under the direction of our
Assembly leaders, Art/Craft station leaders,
Games, Bible/Prayer leaders, and Movie leaders
and our exceptional Kitchen Angels in charge of
snacks this week was a huge success.
