Without a doubt, 2016 will present many challenges to the tourism industry, given the currently rough global economic environment, as well as social unrest in some countries, but there will also be many opportunities, especially for competitive destinations such as the United States. This country is constantly reinventing itself, creating tourism offerings for the new generations or for its recurring visitors, giving place to a better local and social environment with more job creation in destinations that are easier to maintain and manage. No matter how many times a year you visit, your experience will surely be a pleasant one, exceeding what you have come to expect from the country brand. The oft-repeated expression, “Every time I go to Las Vegas I have a great time” is the mark of a truly competitive destination. Whether you’re visiting as a couple, with friends or family, or even adventuring on your own, you can be sure that you will get your money’s worth, that you will be safe and that you will be given remarkable service. This is the result of a society that’s equal, productive and with long-term strategic planning. Most tourist destinations in the United States are putting their efforts into communications platforms to promote their attractions and continue to create new and innovative products to meet evolving demands in specific market segments, such as DJs and music festivals, sports events, food and wine tours, extreme sports and ecotourism, shopping experiences and many others. Even if there is expected to be a 14% decrease in tourism from Mexico to the US due to the devaluation of the Mexican Peso against the dollar, in 2016, Mexico won’t be significantly affected, so it is very important that the tourism industry double down its efforts to promote the destinations, attractions, services and new offerings of the United States. Picturesque stone bridges arching over the river, margaritas of all colors and flavors, 18th century Spanish colonial missions, hundreds of biking trails, traditional cuisine and kayaking, just a few a steps from each other, in addition to first-world tourist infrastructure and all the shopping you could dream of, all are waiting for you on the the River bank. The Riverwalk is regarded as one of the most iconic sites in the city, because every tourist will find something that spikes their interest in this beautiful destination, which links the city to both its historical roots and its journey into modernity. San Antonio is full of history, culture and entertainment, all of which can be found next to the river, serving as a guiding path for all tourists. The heart of the city Those visiting for the first time will want to spend a lot of time downtown. Here you’ll find the Alamo, the first of five Spanish missions that founded the city, and which later marked a turning point in the Mexican-American War of 1836. You should enjoy standing under the shade of the huge oaks at the Alamo, and have a delicious ice cream before heading towards Buckhorn Museum. You should visit the Menger Hotel, with a 19th century Victorian style; it is the oldest continuously operating hotel this side of the Mississippi, and it is said to be the most haunted hotel in Texas. Almost as important as the Alamo are the outside tables on the Riverwalkm, where you can have some tasty enchiladas and margaritas under the colorful umbrellas of Casa Rio, the oldest establishment in the Riverwalk. There are other places like Rio Cantina and Iron Cactus, both of which are highly recommended Mexican eateries, or if you’re looking for Tex-Mex cuisine, you can have some smoked steaks at County Line BBQ. The city’s food scene has undoubtedly seen significant growth in recent years, especially in the downtown area. The renovated Rivercenter Mall This mall has more than 100 stores, restaurants and recreational activities, so it might take a while to go through all of it. It was already home to a Macy’s, Fogo de Chao, River Center Comedy Club and an 11-screen AMC complex featuring Alamo IMAX. Nowadays, the entire buzz is about the Yard House, which has more than 100 different kinds of beers and a globally-inspired menu. A 35-minute narrated tour of the River is recommended to get familiar with the history and architecture Art takes the spotlight San Antonio’s arts and entertainment flourish just north of the main Riverwalk zone. At Bohanan`s Prime Steaks & Seafood you get an Old World feel while listening to the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, after attending a concert at the Majestic Empire or Aztec theaters, or after enjoying a free movie screening under the stars at Travis Park. Fun for all the family The city has always been known for being family friendly with a whole range of amusement parks. MISSION VALLEY In 1961, construction began on the Mission Valley Shopping Mall and its 70 stores. This venue had been planned to be built next to the San Diego River since 1958. In 1994, Westfield acquired the mall. Currently, this mall is home to 125 stores, from large department stores like Macy’s and Target, to discount stores like Marshall’s and Payless Shoes, as well as better-known brands like Old Navy and Van’s. It also has a cinema complex and food court, as well as restaurants and bars that have together transformed the area in the past 30 years. The mall is open daily from 10 am to 8pm, except for Sundays, when it closes at 6pm. Its outdoor and indoor spaces are a perfect fit for the Southern California weather. FASHION VALLEY In 1969, a few miles from Mission Valley Mall, another mall was opened, featuring a different concept to supplement the area’s commercial potential: the Fashion Valley Mall, an outdoor shopping center with luxury shops. In this way, San Diego locals and visitors would have two excellent shopping options 7 miles of each other. Simon Malls acquired the mall a few years later. Its stores include Gucci, Hugo Boss, Mont Blanc, Lacoste and Tiffany & CO. The outdoor structure gleams with bright blue skies, which are almost a year-round occurrence in San Diego. Both malls are a perfect pair, combining to create one of the most important shopping regions in California, just 25 minutes from the Mexican border and the city of Tijuana. WHERE TO STAY? This commercial area in San Diego has the advantage of featuring a strip full of hotels, the best American chains and options for all budgets, on Interstate 8, across both malls. Next to the Fashion Valley, you’ll find an inhouse hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton Mission Valley. This hotel, part of Hilton’s business accommodation brand, offers the best facilities for business and leisure travelers. Staying just a few steps from the malls has become the ideal option for those who want to spend a weekend shopping in San Diego. They are also ideally located for those who want to go to a football game at Qualcomm Stadium, or who want to get a taste of nature at Balboa Park. This hotel is very close to San Diego international airport and 30 minutes from the new Cross Border Xpress at the Tijuana Binational Airport. An Uber ride to the hotel will cost you approximately USD 25. ¿dónde me hospedaré? Los EE.UU. no permiten la compra de productos libres de impuestos (Duty Free) al llegar, sólo cuando el pasajero va de salida con pase de abordar y pasaporte, a diferencia del Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México. us traveler 37 ■ FEBRERO 2016 ■ escape getaway us traveler 37 ■ FEBRERO 2016 ■ hoteles hotels 14 en el aire Rancho Bernardo Inn 15 Shopping in the air Duty Free shopping is an attractive option when traveling internationally Some tourists choose to arrive with just enough time to go past security filters and board their planes immediately after, so they miss the chance of discovering the stores that exist in airports around the world, offering duty-free products with discounts of 15 to 25% compared to regular department stores. However, almost all international airlines offer Duty Free shopping services onboard. So, when hopping on a plane, passengers who are interested can browse the product catalogue, which features a variety of perfumes, cosmetics, travel items, sunglasses, watches, chocolates, gadgets and toys from the best brands. You can also buy airline-specific items which you won’t find anywhere else. You can start buying as soon as the airplane reaches a certain altitude and range, after which the chief flight attendant will announce the service is now available. Although many airlines take cash, it’s better to pay with a credit or debit card, since prices are always in US dollars. If you purchase a perfume or liquor, you will be handed a sealed bag for security, which you cannot open until after leaving the airport. Some airlines take online preorders, where you can choose your purchases, enter your flight number, date and reservation code, and your items will be waiting for you onboard, although not all airlines offer this option. Aeromexico has its Aeroshop service with a full-fledged catalogue of the best brands, such as Calvin Klein, Lancome, Marc Jacobs, Mont Blanc, Clinic and children’s products like Lego or Hello Kitty, sweets and liquors and a large variety of traveler’s items with the logo of the Eagle Knight airline. United Airlines has some of the best onboard shopping available, and you’ll find products up to 35% cheaper. The catalogue, in addition to staple products like perfumes, cosmetics, jewelry, sweets and liquors, features exclusive offers. Other US airlines offering the service are American Airlines and Delta Airlines, which let you shop even if you are flying on a codeshared flight. Depending on the aircraft, these airlines offer Duty Free browsing on their in-seat screens, and soon passengers will be able to do their in-flight shopping through their own PCs or iPhones right before their trip. Duty Free shopping is not allowed upon entry to the U.S., only when passengers are leaving and have a boarding pass and valid passport, unlike in Mexico City International Airport. In addition to its attractive beaches, bays and cities, California has a world-class wine industry. The huge swaths of land in the US West Coast have mountains, valleys and deserts, and the region is perfectly suited for winemaking. The weather and soil conditions make it easy to grow all kinds of grapes, making California the largest wine producer in America. Wine produced in this region is considered to be one of the best in the world, and it has earned its place in the hearts of the public. There is a large variety of wines, from chardonnay and sauvignon blanc for white wines, to cabernet sauvignon for outstanding red wines. In addition, there’s the Californian zinfandel, whose variants can produce red, white and rose wines. When you lose yourself in this sea of vineyards, you not only discover the beautiful valleys, since along with tours, landscapes and free wine tastings, there’s first-world tourist infrastructure to get more out of your trip. You can get a taste of California’s cuisine at one of its specialty restaurants, whose menus are accompanied by a delightful selection of regional wines. Houston’s Hobby Airport, Orange County’s John Wayne and San Antonio’s International Airport are the gateway for Southwest Airline Why is it such a good idea to fly to these airports? This is the main question travelers ask themselves when flying Southwest, either due to pricing or experience, there are some key points to each airport: HOUSTON-HOBBY South of the city, far from the intense activity of the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, this small airport, which recently went international, has a size and design that make it easier to arrive from Mexico City into the United States. From this airport, you can connect to practically every corner in America through Southwest’s network. It was recently remodeled, new boarding gates were added and signage was replaced to offer better service. In addition, it is part of Houston’s metropolitan airport system, meaning that the same authority that manages the Intercontinental in the north manages Hobby in the south, so services are integrated. JOHN WAYNE A privileged location halfway between San Diego and Los Angeles in California, less than 2 hours from Tijuana and the border, this airport is close to amusement parks and one of the best suburbs in Orange County: Santa Ana, California. Since it is a smaller airport than Los Angeles or San Diego, and less busy than Tijuana, it offers simpler and more comfortable arrivals from Mexico. Interjet flew to this airport for a while, at the same time that Air Tran flew from Mexico City, until last year, when the airline was absorbed by Southwest, which now offers direct nonstop service from Mexico City International Airport. Arriving at this airport is like arriving via railway, thanks to the relative ease of boarding without haste or worries. SAN ANTONIO One of the most Mexican-like destinations in the US has expanded its international airport, and thousands and thousands of visitors come not only from Mexico City, but from all over the country thanks to its expansive connectivity. Over a year ago, AirTran also flew from Mexico City in a codeshared flight with Southwest Airlines, until its merger in August 2015, and now passengers can fly with this airline with very competitive pricing. This airport is also a great choice if your final destination is Laredo, Austin, the Texan country or even Houston, all with excellent fares and the convenient services of an international airport. Other vineyards In addition, there are other vineyards found along the valleys and mountains of the Central Coast, from Monterey Bay in the north to Santa Barbara in the south. The Mendocino and Lake Counties, located north of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, are less frequented, and yet you’ll find very good wines here as well. Dive into a sea of vineyards along different valleys and discover the wonderful world of Californian wine, a truly unique experience. HOW MUCH CAN I SHOP IN THE US WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY INTERNATIONAL DUTIES? Trip to the United States is a great reason to go shopping, since even with the current exchange rate. The problem is that upon returning, we don’t know how much we can bring through customs without having to pay franchise tax or duties LUGGAGE This represents everything we personally own that we can bring free of taxes, meaning it will not count towards the maximum amount that can be carried without duties. This franchise generally includes items and products for personal use. The list of items we can bring tax-free from the United States includes: personal clothes, personal hygiene and beauty products (enough for the duration of the trip), two cameras or video cameras, three cellphones, one laptop, one PDA, up to two pieces of sports equipment (skis, fishing, tennis, golf clubs, etc.), one sound system (portable speaker), iPod, iPad, electronic tablet, headphones, up to 5 external hard drives, 30 CDs, 10 DVDs, up to three software packages, one videogame console with five games, one set of binoculars, one telescope, up to two musical instruments with their accessories, one camping tent, and one toolbox; in addition, elderly or disabled travelers can bring any equipment or items necessary for their particular condition, such as wheelchairs, portable oxygen systems, medical materials, etc. Those older than 18 years old can also bring either up to 10 packs of cigarettes, 25 cigars or 200 grams of tobacco, as well as three liters of any liquor and six liters of wine. All of these items are considered personal luggage and you do not have to pay duties for these. FRANCHISE This is what we can bring into the country without paying taxes but that is not part of our personal luggage. Mexicans arriving by air from the United States can bring up to USD 500 in merchandise free of tax. Those crossing the border on car or foot can bring either USD 500 (when the “Paisano” program is in effect) or USD 300 (the rest of the year). The following products are not included: alcoholic beverages, tobacco or car fuel. If we exceed this amount, we must declare all items in excess, the customs agent will determine the tax payable and that’s it! It is important to declare any exceeding amounts to avoid penalties and further issues. The amount of tax payable may vary, but even after accounting for it, several products are cheaper in the United States than in Mexico. visita: www.sat.gob.mx No vas a creer todo lo que está incluido en un crucero de Disney.
