We are very excited to have all our students back! During this past summer, many
of our students were involved in our summer program. We offered both an
academic program as well as enrichment programming, with activities like boating
and science projects.
This year, we are excited to roll out a few new initiatives to continue to improve our
students’ experience. During the school day, we are offering new academic
supports to all students, particularly additional English language supports for our
second-language learners. We are expanding our after-school enrichment program,
as well as offering new enrichment activities during the school day, including art
and additional violin lessons.
We will also be hosting an Open Gym night to provide a safe space for students in
the evening. For our families, we are rolling out a Parent Ambassador program to
improve communication between parents and teachers. Finally, we are opening two
classrooms for four-year-olds to reach students in the Arlington neighborhood at a
younger age.

Queridos padres,
¡Estamos muy emocionados de tener a todos nuestros estudiantes de regreso!
Durante el verano pasado, muchos de nuestros estudiantes participaron en nuestro
programa de verano. Ofrecimos tanto un programa académico, así como la
programación de enriquecimiento, con actividades como proyectos de navegación y
ciencia.
Este año, estamos muy contentos de lanzar algunas nuevas iniciativas para seguir
mejorando la experiencia de nuestros estudiantes. Durante el día escolar, estamos
ofreciendo nuevos apoyos académicos para todos los estudiantes, adicional apoyo
del idioma Inglés a nuestros aprendedores de un segundo idioma. Estamos
ampliando nuestro programa de enriquecimiento después de la escuela, así como
ofreciendo nuevas actividades de enriquecimiento durante el día escolar, incluyendo
el arte y clases de violín adicionales.
Nosotros también estaremos organizando una Noche de Gimnasio Abierto para
proporcionar un espacio seguro para los estudiantes en la noche. Para nuestras
familias, estamos desplegando un programa de Embajadores de Padres para
mejorar la comunicación entre padres y maestros. Por último, estamos abriendo

Community Day Schools
Welcome 2014-15 Teaching
Fellows
After many weeks of paper screening well
over two hundred applicants, interviewing
dozens of candidates and observing at
least two dozen demonstration lessons,
CDAES is very proud to welcome our
newest Corps of Teaching Fellows. After
completing a rigorous interview process,
our fellows are assigned to the different
charter schools and our community
school based on the needs of the school
and matching talents. During the next
school year they will play a very
important part in the education of our
young children either by assuming the
role of a co-teacher or by working as an
Intervention Specialist.
They are a talented group with rich and
varied experience; their commitment to
children is exceptional. These high energy
Fellows have participated in extensive
professional development in August and
will work closely with experienced
teachers on a daily basis. They will also
receive additional trainings throughout
the year.

Parents as Partners
Parent participation and involvement have
greatly contributed to the success of our
school. All CDAES families are invited to
participate in our parent board and
events at the school. Please get involved!
Parent Advisory Board (PAB)
The PAB meets regularly, giving parents
the opportunity to plan programs that
encourage parental involvement in the
school. Areas addressed in meetings
range from curriculum and academic
issues to fundraising events that provide
support to school programs.

Pre-Kindergarten Academy
Excited and eager to begin the
new school year.

Elementary School
We were so excited to open two new
Pre-K classrooms for 4-yr old students
this week to begin reaching the children
in the Arlington neighborhood at an
earlier age. On Monday, we welcomed
forty students into our Pre-K program,
engaging in activities to get the students
ready for Kindergarten, as well as
enrichment activities like movement
Spanish and art. We can't wait to see how
this program will improve our children’s
learning process.

Academia de Pre-Kindergarten
Estábamos tan contentos de abrir dos nuevas
aulas de Pre-K de estudiantes de 4 años de
edad esta semana para comenzar a ayudar
los niños en el barrio de Arlington en una
edad más temprana. El Lunes, dimos la
bienvenida a cuarenta niños en nuestro
programa de Pre-K, participando en
actividades que motivan a los niños a
preparasen para el Kindergarten, así como
las actividades de enriquecimiento como el
movimiento, el español y el arte. Estamos
emocionados para ver cómo este programa
va a mejorar el proceso de aprendizaje de

Kindergarten & Academia de
Grado 1
Estábamos ocupados en la Academia de K-1
este verano. Los estudiantes asistieron a la
escuela de verano, trabajando en las

¡La Academia de Tercer Grado está muy

¡La academia de cuarto grado a tenido un

Kindergarten & Grade 1
Academy
It was busy at the K-1 Academy this
summer. Students attended summer
school, working on reading and math
skills. The custodial staff was busy getting
our building ready and it looks beautiful.
We also had kindergarten in-take
interviews to help us get to know the
new students. We were all excited for
the start of school!
It’s been a great start to the school year
at the K-1 Academy. Students have been
busy learning routines and procedures
and learning what it means to be a
“Bucket Filler” (ask your student to
explain). In addition, students have been
enjoying Spanish, art, and P.E.
Students have been working hard to earn
our “Arlington Award” for considerate,
cooperative, attentive and generous.
These are awarded at our weekly
assembly so be on the lookout for your
child’s award!
We’ll be hosting a family open house
night on Thursday, September 11th from
5:30-6:30. We look forward to seeing
you there! Also be on the lookout for
invitations to K-1 Academy’s potlucks in
October.

2nd Grade Academy
We have already been so impressed by
this group of Second Grade Academy
students! Our classrooms are full of
scholars who are extremely respectful,
ambitious, and ready to learn as much as
they can this year. We are also lucky to
have a group of teachers who go above
and beyond every day for your students.
We hope you can take some time to visit
our classrooms, and are looking forward
to partnering with you this school year!

This year is a big year for the Third Grade
as it is their first year taking the MCAS in
the spring. We have set high expectations
for our Third Grade students and are
excited to see how much they will
achieve by the end of the year. We would
like to thank our Third Grade families for
all of their support in the beginning weeks
of school, and we are thrilled for another
great year at CDA!

Elementary School
A very exciting first day of school at
School
Fourth Grade Academy is off to a
wonderful start! We have been working
hard on perfecting our procedures and
routines to make sure our days run
smoothly. We are already diving into
great books and working on building our
stamina for independent reading. In math
we are practicing fluency with our math
facts and work on building conceptual
understanding of the four operations. We
are brushing up on our Spanish in twice-aweek Spanish classes, getting fit in Physical
Education class, and are thrilled to also
have art class this year. We are looking
forward to a fantastic year!

Brent Merten, Principal
Mr. Merten returns as principal this year. He has
worked for Community Day Schools for many years,
both as a teacher and head of school. He received a
bachelor’s degree from Knox College in Illinois and
a master’s degree in educational administration from
Boston College. He has developed his Spanish
language skills during time spent in Asunción,
Paraguay. 3rd Grade Academy
The Third Grade Academy is very excited
to be back in school! Students are already
working hard on their academics and
modeling the school rules and character
trait, respectful. We have hosted two
Community Assemblies where one boy
and one girl from each class won an
award for demonstrating respect
throughout the week. The Third Grade
Academy is also working diligently on
“Bucket Filling” this year, and each week
we will honor one student who has
exemplified Bucket Filling.

Wilmary Flores, Head of School, Pre-K
Mrs. Flores just joined CDAES for her first year. She
has previous experience at Shalom School as a PreK teacher in her native Puerto Rico. She joined
Community Day Learning Center where she taught
Pre-K for six years. She also worked as a Mentor
Teacher for the Pre-K teachers for a year. For the
last year she was the Assistant Director of the
Community Day Learning Center. She earned an
undergraduate degree from The University Of
Puerto Rico and is currently working on her
graduate degree from Springfield College. She enjoys
spending time with her two kids and her husband.
She loves to read to her daughter every night; her
favorite book is Pinkalicious.
Tiffany Goddard, Head of School, K-1
Ms. Goddard joins CDAES for her second year. As
Head of School for Kindergarten and First Grade.
Her experience includes working at Community Day
Charter Public School-Prospect, where she taught
Kindergarten and 1st grade for 7 years. Prior to that,
she taught at an Armenian school and overseas in
the Marshall Islands for a year. She earned an

She is currently working on a doctorate in
educational leadership from Boston University.
Ryan Werb, Head of School, Second Grade
Academy
Mr. Werb joins us for a second year. He has
previous experience teaching and leading in the
Southwest (U.S.) as well as this area. His experience
includes teaching first grade on the Navajo
reservation in New Mexico; serving as an
instructional coach with the MATCH Teacher
Residency program; and training new teachers as an
academic dean, corps member advisor, and school
Operations Manager with the Teach For America
Phoenix Institute. He holds a graduate degree in
education policy and management.
Meaghan Dowdle, Head of School,
Third Grade Academy
Ms. Dowdle attended Creighton University in
Omaha, NE and has a master’s degree from the
Harvard Graduate School of Education. Before
joining The Community Group and CDAES,
Ms. Dowdle taught 11th grade Latin American
Literature in Chicago, IL. One of her passions is
travelling, and a goal is to visit every country in Latin
America!
Corey Merrill, Head of School,
Fourth Grade Academy
Ms. Merrill attended Northwestern University in
Illinois and holds a master’s degree from Dominican
University in the art of teaching. She joined
Community Day in 2010 after teaching in Chicago,
Illinois. One of her favorite children’s books is Roald
Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Operations Managers
Pamela Gilbert, K-1
Ms. Gilbert is the operations manager for
Kindergarten and first grade. Her former
experience includes working at Child Care Circuit, a
program of The Community Group, where she
served as Assistant Site Manager. She holds a
bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cambridge
College.
Marlenny Alvarez, Second Grade
Ms. Alvarez returns to CDAES for a second year.
Her experience includes time spent as an operations
manager at a financial institution. She is currently
working toward a bachelor’s degree in business
management.
Francina G. Victoria, Third Grade
Ms. Victoria holds a bachelor’s degree in political

passion for sustainability and community growth,
Ms. Victoria has been greatly involved with various
community agencies and groups that empower and
embrace the cultivation of potential within our
community. Ms. Victoria loves to travel and explore
new cultures.
Nelfa Pimentel, Fourth Grade
Ms. Pimentel has a bachelor’s degree in human
services at Springfield College. Before joining
CDAES, she worked for Community Day Learning’s
Family Child Care program since 2007. In her spare
time, she loves watching movies, spending time with
her children, and travelling.
Pre-Kindergarten
Grade 1
Kelly Camuso
Ms. Camuso is a CDCA Fellow and will be joining us
for her first year. She earned an undergraduate
degree in elementary and special education from
Providence College and is working on a master’s of
education in urban teaching. Previously, Ms. Camuso
was working in Beverly, MA as an applied behavioral
analysis therapist.
Anna Mueller
Ms. Mueller is a Teach For America alumnus and
begins her first year with us. She earned a degree in
biochemistry from Union College and a master
degree in elementary education from the University
of Missouri, St. Louis. Ms. Mueller has recently spent
time abroad as a volunteer teacher in Joure,
Netherlands.
Jennifer Barhoff
Ms. Barhoff returns to her native Massachusetts
after teaching at the Robbin Parish School in
Houston, Texas. She earned a bachelor’s of arts
degree from Assumption College and a master of
science in early childhood education from
Wheelock College.
Alexandra Fish
Ms. Fish begins her first year with us as a first grade
teacher. She earned a degree in elementary
education from University of Maine, Orono and a
master of education in language and literacy from
Harvard. Before joining CDAES, she worked in the
Brookline school district providing one-on-one
instructional support to elementary students with
autism spectrum disorder.
Janelle Trickett
Ms. Trickett has been with Community Day
Learning Center for four years and returns this year
as a preschool teacher at CDAES. She earned a
bachelor’s of arts degree from Curry College.
Kindergarten 2
Jessica Dugan
Ms. Dugan joins our school after earning a
bachelor’s degree from Wheelock College in human
development and a master’s degree in special
education from Salem State University. She has
previous experience teaching at the Essex
elementary school in Essex MA and tutoring
students in the Manchester Essex Regional school
district.
Courtney Rizza
Ms. Rizza is joining us in her first year as a CDA
Fellow. She received a bachelor of arts in early
childhood development from Hofstra University.
She is looking forward to meeting and working with
her new students and their families.
Elizabeth Smith
Ms. Smith will be joining our school for her first
year after previously teaching Kindergarten abroad
in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia. She earned an
undergraduate degree in elementary education from
Mount Saint Mary’s College and Seminary.
Kayla Miamis
Ms. Miamis graduated from Roger Williams
University in Bristol, Rhode Island, receiving a
bachelor's degree in both elementary education and
psychology. She has also completed a master’s
degree in special education through American
International College. Ms. Miamis previously taught
kindergarten at the Franco American School in
Lowell, MA.
Allison Fleischner
Ms. Fleischner earned an undergraduate degree
from Rollins College and a master’s degree from the
University of Massachusetts, Boston. Her prior
experience includes a long-standing pre-K and
Kindergarten teaching position at Bright Horizons in
Cambridge, MA.
Megan Blanchette
Ms. Blanchette joins us for her second year as a
Kindergarten teacher. She earned a degree in
elementary education from High Point University in
North Carolina. Her past experience includes work
with children in infancy through elementary school.
Samantha Lacasse
Ms. Lacasse joins us for her first year as a CDA
Fellow. She is a recent graduate of Westfield State
University with a bachelor of science in education.
Prior to joining CDAES, Ms. Lacasse worked at
Bright Horizons as a Kindergarten prep teacher and
assistant teacher.
Maureen Pollet
Ms. Polleet is a recent graduate of Western New
England University and joins CDAES this fall for her
first year. She has previous experience as a third
grade student teacher and teacher’s aid in
Springfield, MA.
Judi Carleton, Interventionist
Ms. Carleton is a reading interventionist. She
obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree in
education from Lesley University. She brings
extensive experience to CDAES after working in
Stoneham as a preK-Kindergarten teacher and in
Concord as a Title I reading, math, and special
education tutor.
Kelsey Lessard
Ms. Lessard joins our school for her second year as
a first grade teacher. She completed her degree
from Gordon College in early childhood education
and English. She completed her student teaching in
both Kindergarten and first grade in Salisbury, MA
and Revere, MA.
Stephanie Manteiga
Ms. Manteiga graduated from the University of
Maine at Farmington with a bachelor's degree in
early childhood education. She earned a master’s
degree in elementary education & moderate
disabilities from Merrimack College.
Brooke Trager
Ms. Trager earned an undergraduate degree from
University of Massachusetts Lowell and a graduate
degree from Merrimack College. Her experience
includes teaching for 8 years at a Hebrew school as
well as working with Kindergarten and second grade
students.
Joshua Benjamin
Mr. Benjamin earned an undergraduate degree from
Tufts University and received a master’s degree in
elementary education from Clark University.
Through the Teach for America Program, Mr.
Benjamin taught 3rd and 5th grades; he later taught
at the Jacob Hiatt Magnet School in Worcester.

Sr. Merten regresa como principal este año. Ha

La Sra. Goddard se une a CDAES con experiencia

Ms. Eaton received a bachelor’s degree in
psychology with a minor in education, as well as a
master of education from the University of
Massachusetts-Amherst. Prior to joining our school,
she taught in Lawrence at Lawrence Catholic
Academy and Our Lady of Good Counsel School.
Second Grade
Alyssa Motai
Ms. Motai begins her first year with CDAES. She
received an undergraduate degree in business
administration and a master’s degree in education
from Lesley University. Her most recent position
was with the Kennedy Longfellow School as an
intern.
Catherine McCourt
Ms. McCourt joins us for her first year. She received
an undergraduate degree in sociology from Harvard
College. She is a Teach For America alumnus, having
taught in the Lawrence Public School District.
Cheryl Ruggiero
Ms. Ruggiero received a bachelor’s in early
childhood education and special education from the
College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. She has
previous experience as a Match teacher and
resident at Match Community Day Public Charter
School in Boston. She is currently working on
earning a Master in Effective Teaching from the
Charles Sposato Graduate School of Education. In
her free time, she enjoys cooking, reading, and
Zumba.
Mandy Ralston
Ms. Ralston studied elementary education at Florida
State University and will be working on a masters of
education in curriculum and teaching at Boston
University this fall. She loves jogging and spending
time with friends and family.
Third Grade
Jillian Dempsey
Ms. Dempsey is a Teach For America alumnus and
joins us for her first year. She received an
undergraduate degree from Harvard University in
the classics. She is currently pursuing a master’s of
education at Boston University.
Elizabeth Miller
Ms. Miller graduated from the University of
Massachusetts, Dartmouth and graduated with a
master's degree from the Merrimack Graduate
School of Education in 2014. She is a returned Peace
Corps volunteer and served in St. Vincent and the
Grenadines as an elementary school teacher. When
she is not at school, she loves to do yoga and coach
gymnastics.
Kaitlyn Delaney
Ms. Delaney is a Teach For America alumnus and
has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education
from Florida State University. She joins CDAES after
teaching in a fifth grade special education classroom
in the Dorchester Public School District.
Lauren Henrickson
Ms. Henrickson attended Emory University, and is
currently pursuing a master's degree in education at
Boston University. She joins CDAES after teaching
in the Lawrence Public School District through
Teach For America.
Paige Beisiegel
Ms. Beisiegel returns to our school for her second
year. She holds a M.Ed. from Regis University and a
bachelor’s from the University of New Hampshire.
Ms. Beisiegel loves being outdoors and enjoys
snowboarding, kayaking, hiking, and playing with her
two dogs.
Erika Vacher
Ms. Vacher joined CDAES mid-year, 2014 from the
Richard Maghakian Memorial School in Brookline,
NH. She was assisting with behavioral management
in small student groups. She has a bachelor’s of arts
in psychology from Norwich University.
Rebecca Whitley
Ms. Whitley grew up near San Francisco, California,
and received a bachelor’s in psychology and
geography from the University of California, Santa
Barbara. She has experience working at MATCH
Community Day Charter Public School as a tutor
and teacher resident; she is a graduate of the
MATCH Teacher Residency program. In her spare
time, she enjoys cooking, baking, trying new
restaurants and coffee shops, and exploring Boston.
Lana Solomon
Ms. Solomon is a native of New York and has spent
time working and teaching abroad in Venezuela.
She holds a bachelor's degree from SUNY New
Paltz in Latin American studies and Spanish liberal
arts. She is currently enrolled in an education and
curriculum graduate program at Boston University.
Ms. Solomon loves to travel and hopes to visit each
country within Latin America.
Kyla Brown
Ms. Brown begins her second year with us. She
received an undergraduate degree in psychology and
elementary education from Wellesley College. She
previously worked at MATCH Community Day in
Boston as a teacher resident. She is currently
finishing a master in effective teaching degree
through the Charles Sposato School of Graduate
Education. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and
baking.
Leanne Hall
Ms. Hall attended The University of Nevada, Las
Vegas and has six years of classroom teaching
experience. Outside of school, she enjoys walking
her dog, reading, shopping and eating at new
restaurants. She joined our school this August and is
excited for what the year holds!
Erin Ficarra
Ms. Ficarra attended the University of Connecticut
and received a master’s degree from the University
of Bridgeport. She has been working in schools for
the last four years, and is excited to return to
CDAES this fall as a classroom teacher. Outside of
the classroom, Ms. Ficarra loves to read, play sports
and go camping.
Amber Lakin
Ms. Lakin returns for her second year. She attended
Emory University and is currently getting a master
of effective teaching from the Charles Sposato
Graduate School of Education. She spent the last
year working as a tutor and teacher resident at
MATCH Community Day Charter Public School in
Boston. Besides teaching and spending time with
kids, Amber loves to run and explore Boston.
Emily Morris
Ms. Morris attended Smith College, where she
studied special education and psychology. She is
currently pursuing a master's degree in education at
Boston University. Prior to joining CDAES in 2013,
she worked with students ranging in age from 3-18
in Philadelphia, New York City, Holyoke, and
Greece. Outside of school, she loves to read and
think about ways to meaningfully engage her
students!
Martha Chazanoff
Ms. Chazanoff holds a master's degree from San
Francisco State University and is a National Board
Certified Teacher in Literacy and also in Middle
Childhood (grades 2 - 6). She joined CDAES in 2013
after teaching in San Diego, Hawaii, and San
Francisco. Outside of school, she enjoys spending
time with her children, reading, and singing.
Jeffrey Scull
Mr. Scull attended Michigan State University and
spent the last seven years teaching in Michigan.
When he is not at school, he keeps busy by playing
tennis and taking care of his family, which includes
two dogs and a rabbit. Mr. Scull is also a Jedi Master
when it comes to Star Wars trivia and loves to
teach his students how to read and write.
Brittany Peters
Ms. Peters attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie,
New York for her bachelor’s and master's degrees.
She joined CDAES this June after finishing her
master’s degree and working in the admissions
office of Marist College. In the past, she has worked
with third grade and middle school students.
Outside of school, she loves to swim and fish, but
during the school day, she is most excited about
science!
Fourth Grade
Elizabeth Miller
Ms. Miller attended Towson University were she
received an undergraduate degree in elementary and
special education. She is currently working on a
master’s degree from Boston University. She loves
running and reading. This is her first year teaching at
CDA and she is extremely excited to start the year!
Mary Jones
Ms. Jones grew up in Upstate New York. She
received an undergraduate degree in elementary
education from The University of Scranton in
Pennsylvania and a graduate degree in literacy from
Providence College. This is her eighth year of
teaching. She previously taught in Fall River and
Wellesley. Her favorite subject to teach is math. She
enjoys the beach and taking her dog, Tuukka, for
runs in the park.
Jeremy Scheiner
Mr. Scheiner attended Washington University in St.
Louis and is currently working on a master's degree
at Boston University. This is his first year teaching
with Community Day and he is extremely excited to
join the team. Two of his favorite children's books
are The Little Prince and The House on Mango
Street.
Emily Rowinsky
Ms. Rowinski received her undergraduate degree
from Emmanuel College in Boston and is completing
a master's degree in reading at Salem State
University. She worked for Boston Public Schools
for three years before joining CDAES. In her free
time, she loves to bake.

Ms. Fox attended Longwood University in Virginia
and is certified to teach kindergarten through grade

La Sra. Whitley creció cerca de San Francisco,

Lana Solomon
La Sra. Salomón es una nativa de Nueva York que ha

Erin Ficarra
La Sra. Ficarra asistió a la Universidad de

Martha Chazanoff
La Sra. Chazanoff tiene una maestría de la

Peter White
Mr. White attended SUNY Cortland in New York
to obtain his degree in elementary education. He
joined Community Day in 2013 after teaching in
Phoenix, Arizona. In his free time, Mr. White enjoys
watching Boston sports or reading a good book.
Alexandra Humphreys
Ms. Humphreys attended Colby College in Maine
and holds a master’s degree from Lesley University
in elementary education. Before joining CDAES, she
taught at a charter school in Malden for three years.
She enjoys painting, playing tennis, and reading.

Christine O’Brian
Ms. O’Brian joins our school for a second year as a
learning specialist. She graduated from Saint Joseph’s

degree in special education in 2013.
Samantha Nelson
Ms. Nelson studied elementary and special
education at Salve Regina University. She was a
student teacher in the Newport, RI school system.
She is a member and volunteer for the East Bay
Special Olympics.
Lindsay Shields
Ms. Shields earned her bachelor of arts in inclusive
education and sociology from Nazareth College of
Rochester in 2010 and her graduate degree as a
specialist teacher of reading from Lesley University
in 2013. She is joining us for the 2013-2014 school
year as an intervention teacher after teaching
gymnastics and working as a literacy aide. She is
originally from upstate New York and has been an
avid dancer since she was in elementary school.
Generalists
Amber Grilli
Ms. Grilli attended the University of California,
Irvine and holds a master’s degree in elementary
education from Northern Arizona University. She
taught fourth grade for four years in Arizona before
moving to Massachusetts. She likes playing sports,
enjoying the outdoors, and reading.
Eileen Sharkey, Literacy Specialist
Ms. Sharkey returns for a second year to share her
expertise with staff and students throughout the
building. This year she will continue to support
teachers in their efforts to make every student a
proficient reader. Ms. Sharkey has many years of
experience as a reading specialist, classroom teacher
and primary literacy coordinator in the North
Andover Public Schools.
Christina Aiuto
Ms. Aiuto is a new teacher at CDAES. She is
originally from Long Island, New York. She attended
Marist College in upstate New York and is currently
working towards her master’s degree in educational
psychology. Her hobbies include reading and baking.

Carol Stern
Ms. Stern holds an undergraduate degree from
Boston University and a graduate degree in special
education from Northeastern University. She
returns to us this year and brings years of
experience working for Community Day Charter
Public Schools.
Learning Specialists
Kimberly Hasenstab
Ms. Hasenstab graduated from the University of
Connecticut in 2011 with a bachelor's degree and
earned a master's degree from Merrimack College
in May 2013. This is her first year at CDAES and she
is looking forward to working with the fourth grade
teachers and students.
Danielle Delande
Ms. Delande received a bachelor’s degree from
Roger Williams University and a master’s degree in
education from Lesley University. Before becoming
a learning specialist at CDAES, she worked in
various capacities at Great Oak Elementary in
Danvers, MA.
Emily Povich
Ms. Povich returns for her second year at CDAES.
She graduated from Syracuse University with a

Ms. Gunawardana joins us this year after graduating
from Princeton University this past spring with a
degree in psychology. During her time at Princeton,
Amali spent time volunteering in an emergency
room in Red Bank, New Jersey.

Mehida Gonzalez
Ms. Gonzalez holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology
from Rowan University, a master’s degree in
counseling education from Kean University, and an
Expressive Therapy Certificate from Lesley
University. She is also pursuing a Mental Health
Certificate at Salem State University. She is a
bilingual professional whose past experience
includes social work and counseling in different
settings.

Julie Sampson, Instructional Coach
Ms. Sampson begins her second year with us after
spending time in the southwest, teaching in the
Sante Fe Public Schools. She obtained a bachelor’s
degree in education from Notre Dame College.
Amanda Conte, Psychologist
Ms. Conte earned a bachelor’s in psychology and a
master’s in mental health counseling and trauma
studies. She previously worked at Saugus High
School as a behavioral interventionist and
coordinator.
Lisa Rand, Interventionist
Ms. Rand joins CDAES for her first year. She holds
an undergraduate bachelor’s of education degree
from Roger Williams University. She is currently
working towards a master of education at American
International College. Ms. Rand previously worked
as a building based educator at the St. Augustine
School in Andover, MA.
Lori Donovan, Interventionist
Ms. Donovan returns to CDAES as an
interventionist for grades three and four. She has a
master’s of education from Salem State University
and a bachelor of Science from Keene State College.
Joseph Barnes
Mr. Barnes received a bachelor of science in
elementary physical education from Salem State
University. He has been teaching in Lawrence since
the fall of 2012, and joined CDAES this summer. He
loves to laugh.
Courtney LeCours, Physical Education
Ms. LeCours attended Plymouth State University
and holds a bachelor’s degree in physical and health
education. Her background includes working with
special education and teaching adaptive physical
education in New Hampshire. Outside of school,
she loves to be outdoors and spend time with
friends and family.
Carlos Cameron, Spanish
Mr. Cameron earned a bachelor of science from
Troy State University and joins CDAES for his first
year. Previously he was teaching Spanish at Whittier
Regional Vocational & Technical High School in
Haverill, MA. Mr. Cameron also spent time at
Merrimack Special Education Collaborative as a
special education transitional assistant.
Katie McEwan, Art
Ms. McEwan joins our school for her first year in
the art department. She holds a bachelor’s of fine
art from the University of Massachusetts and a
master of art in teaching from Lesley University.
Previously, she taught art in the Nashoba Regional
School District.

RuthEmely Rivera
Ms. Rivera joined our school last spring as a parent
education leader. She holds a bachelor’s degree in
special education and biology from Fitchburg State
College.
Rafael Vega
Mr. Vega is a parent education leader. He holds a
bachelor’s degree in accounting from Merrimack
College and is also a real estate agent. He is also the
proud father of 4 beautiful daughters.
Classroom Assistants
Jose Ojeda-Pagan
Mr. Pagan is a native of Puerto Rico and joins us for
his first year in the Pre-K classroom. He attended
the Universidad de Puerto Rico where he studied
history and political science. Here in Massachusetts
he has been working in the Webster Public Schools
as a pre-K instructional assistant.
Roberto Arevalo
Mr. Arevalo joins us with a bachelor’s in marketing
and has worked more than 10 years in the
marketing field. He has experience in teaching
literacy to children and adults in El Salvador and as a
math instructor to second graders.
Joseph Zuniga
Mr. Zuniga joins us as a classroom assistant for his
first year. He is currently working towards his
degree in early childhood education at Becker
College.

Jeffrey Scull
El Sr. Scull asistió a la Universidad Estatal de

Brittany Peters
La Sra. Peters asistió Marist College en

maestría. Se unió CDAES en el mes de Junio
después de terminar su maestría y haber trabajado

pasado, ella ha trabajado con estudiantes de tercer

Ms. DeJesus joins CDAES as a classroom assistant
for her first year. She holds a bachelor’s degree in
sociology from UMASS Lowell in sociology.
Jurexsy Reyes
Mr. Reyes returns to Community Day Early
Learning Center as a classroom assistant in Pre-K
after teaching in the preschool for the past few
years. He earned an associate degree in early
childhood development from Northern Essex
Community College and is currently pursuing a
bachelor’s degree in early childhood education at
Merrimack College.
Alberto Abreu-Ruiz
Mr. Abreu is a native of Havana, Cuba who recently
relocated to this area. He brings four years of
experience at the National Bank of Cuba as an
accountant.
Maytee Aleman
Ms. Aleman, a native of Puerto Rico who holds a
bachelor’s degree in education, returns to CDAES
this year. Her experience in Puerto Rico includes
teaching language arts/ESL with middle and high
school students. Ms. Aleman was also part of the
Teachers’ Council and coordinated an educational
trip to the Kennedy Space Center for 3 years.
Carwin De Jesus Castro
Mr. De Jesus Castro returns as a classroom
assistant this year. He holds bachelor’s degrees in
criminology and in physical education, a master’s
degree in physical education, and is working toward
a P.h.D. in Education. His many years of experience
in education include teaching at the elementary
level, teaching physical education in Puerto Rico, and
serving as a substitute teacher in Massachusetts.

Paola King
Ms. King joins us for her first year after spending
time at Lincoln Technical Institute as a career
service advisor. She is currently pursuing a degree in
elementary education and psychology at Merrimack

Lissette Caraballo
Ms. Caraballo joins CDAES for her first year as a
classroom assistant. She is working towards a
master’s degree from Southern University of New
Hampshire in early childhood education and has a
bachelor of science in business administration from
UMASS Lowell. Lissette has experience in providing
individual financial counseling and advocacy to
homeowners through the Homeownership Center
at Lawrence Community Works.
Community Relations
Manuela Su, Director of Community
Relations
Ms. Su has worked for The Community Group for
many years. She has served as a teacher, program
director, and training coordinator for the
organization. Her recent work has included
developing and leading bilingual training programs
for educators.
Vanessa Espendez
Ms. Espendez holds an associate’s degree from
Pontificia Catholic University in Puerto Rico. She
has extensive volunteer experience in addition to
work experience as a family child care provider and
a playgroup facilitator for the Child Care Circuit
through the Community Group.
Felix Gonzalez
Mr. Gonzalez was born in New York and raised in
Puerto Rico. He brings experience serving in the
Army National Guard as well as a degree in
education and English as a second language from the
Inter American University. He recently moved to
the U.S to care for his mother.
Glendy Perez
Ms. Perez joins us as a classroom assistant. She
received a bachelor’s degree from Bay Path College.
Before joining the CDAES classroom assistant team,
she was a certified nurse assistant and an EECcertified teacher assistant/preschool teacher.
Glenny Smith
Ms. Smith joins us as a classroom assistant. She is a
student at Northern Essex Community College,
earning a degree in general studies and English as a
second language. Before joining CDAES, she was a
substitute teacher at Community Day Learning’s
Early Learning Center.

Mr. Suriel joins us for a second year as a classroom
assistant. He earned an undergraduate degree in

Lisa Rand, Intervencionista
La Sra. Rand une CDAES por su primer año. Posee

Sr. Cameron obtuvo una licenciatura en ciencias de
la Universidad Estatal de Troy y se une a CDAES
por su primer año. Anteriormente enseño Español
en Whittier Vocacional Regional y la Escuela
Secundaria Técnica en Haverill, MA. Sr. Cameron
también pasó tiempo en la Colaboración Educativa
Especial de Merrimack como asistente de transición
de educación especial.
Katie McEwan, Arte
La Sra. McEwan se une a nuestra escuela para su
primer año en el departamento de arte. Obtuvo una
licenciatura en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de
Massachusetts y una maestría en enseñanza de arte
de la Universidad de Lesley. Anteriormente, fue
profesora de arte en el distrito escolar regional
Nashoba.
Líderes de Educación para Padres
RuthEmely Rivera
La Sra. Rivera se unió a la escuela en la primavera
pasada como líder de educación para padres.
Obtuvo una licenciatura en educación especial y
biología de Fitchburg State College.
Rafael Vega
El Sr. Vega se es un líder de educación para padres.
Posee una licenciatura en contabilidad del
Merrimack College y es también un agente de
bienes raíces. También es el orgulloso padre de 4
hermosas hijas.
Asistentes de Clases
José Ojeda-Pagan
Sr. Pagan es un nativo de Puerto Rico y se une a
nosotros en su primer año en la clase de Pre-K.
Asistió a la Universidad de Puerto Rico donde
estudió historia y ciencias políticas. Aquí en
Massachusetts ha estado trabajando en las Escuelas
Públicas de Webster como asistente de instrucción
de pre-K.
Roberto Arevalo
Sr. Arévalo se une a nosotros con una licenciatura
en comercialización y ha trabajado más de 10 años
en el campo de la comercialización. Tiene
experiencia en la alfabetización de niños y adultos
en El Salvador y como instructor de matemáticas
para alumnos de segundo grado.
Glendy Perez
La Sra. Pérez se une a nuestra escuela como
asistente de aula. Recibió un título de licenciatura de
Bay Path College. Antes de unirse al equipo de aula
asistente CDAES, ella fue asistente de enfermera
certificada y tiene un certificado CEE como
ayudante de profesor preescolar.
José Zúñiga
Sr. Zúñiga se une a nosotros como asistente de
clase por su primer año. Actualmente está
trabajando hacia su licenciatura en educación de la
primera infancia en Becker College.
Glenny Smith
La Sra. Smith se une a nosotros como asistente de
aula. Es una estudiante de Northern Essex
Community College, en estudios generales y de
Inglés como segundo idioma. Antes de unirse a
CDAES, era una maestra sustituta en el Centro de
aprendizaje Temprano de Community Day.
Natalie DeJesus
La Sra. DeJesus une CDAES como asistente de aula
por su primer año. Obtuvo una licenciatura en
sociología de la Universidad de Massachusetts
Lowell.
Jurexsy Reyes
El Sr. Reyes vuelve a Community Day Early Learning
Center como asistente de aula en Pre-K después de
enseñar en el preescolar para los últimos años.
Obtuvo un Asociado en Licenciatura en desarrollo
infantil temprano de Northern Essex Community
College y actualmente se encuentra realizando una
licenciatura en educación de la primera infancia en
Merrimack College.
Alberto Abreu-Ruiz
El Sr. Abreu es un nativo de La Habana, Cuba, quien
recientemente se mudó a esta zona. Él trae cuatro
años de experiencia en el Banco Nacional de Cuba
como contador.
Maytee Aleman
La Sra. Aleman, es una nativa de Puerto Rico que
cuenta con un título de licenciatura en educación y
vuelve a CDAES este año. Su experiencia en Puerto
Rico incluye la enseñanza de artes del lenguaje inglés
como segundo idioma a los estudiantes de
secundaria y preparatoria. La Sra. Aleman también
formó parte del Consejo de Profesores y
coordinaba un viaje educativo al Centro Espacial
Kennedy durante 3 años.
Carwin De Jesus Castro
El Sr. De Jesus Castro regresa como asistente de
clase este año. Posee una licenciatura en
criminología y en educación física, una maestría en
educación física, y está trabajando para obtener un
PhD. en Educación. Sus años de experiencia en
educación incluyen la enseñanza a nivel elemental, la
enseñanza de educación física en Puerto Rico, y el
haber servido como profesor sustituto en
Massachusetts.
Paola King
Este es el primer año de Ms. King luego de trabajar
en el Instituto Técnico Lincoln como consejera de
servicios de carrera. Actualmente esté estudiando
educación en el Merrimack College
Lissette Caraballo
Ms. Caraballo se une a nuestra escuela este año
como asistente de clase. Está estudiando para
obtener su maestría en educación temprana en la
Southern University en New Hampshire y tiene un
bachillerado en administración de empresas de la
Universidad de Massachusetts en Lowell. Lissette
tiene experiencia proveyendo consejería individual
financiera a los dueños de casas a través del
programa Homeownership Center del Lawrence
Community Works.
Jose Suriel
El Sr. Suriel nos une por su Segundo ano como
asistente de aula. El obtuvo una licenciatura en
educación y estudios sociales de la Universidad
Tecnológica de Santiago en República Dominicana y
un título de postgrado en educación de la
universidad de Cambridge. Su experiencia incluye la
enseñanza de los grados 3, 5, 7 y 8 en las Escuelas
Públicas de Lawrence.
Relaciones de la Comunidad
Manuela Su, Directora de Relaciones de la
Comunidad
Ha trabajado para el Community Group durante
muchos años. Se ha desempeñado como
profesora, directora de un programa, y
coordinadora de capacitación de la organización.
Su trabajo más reciente incluye desarrollar y dirigir
programas de formación para los educadores
bilingües.
Vanessa Espendez
La Sra. Espendez tiene un título asociado de la
Universidad Católica Pontificia de Puerto Rico.
Tiene una amplia experiencia como voluntaria,
además de la experiencia laboral como proveedora
de cuidado infantil en el hogar y como facilitadora
para el grupo de juego a través del grupo de la
comunidad del Child Care Circuit.
Felix Gonzalez
El Sr. González nació en Nueva York y se crió en
Puerto Rico. Él trae la experiencia de servir en la
Guardia Nacional del Ejército, así como una
licenciatura en educación en Inglés como segundo
idioma en la Universidad Interamericana.
Recientemente se mudó a los EE.UU. para cuidar de
su madre.
