I watched in YouTube the last mass of Pope Francis at the World Youth Day event in Rio. I was mesmerized. The mammoth gathering of 3 million in Copacabana Beach, one of the biggest papal mass, grabbed me. The enthusiasm and the fervor of the young people affected me deeply. The simple and challenging messages of Pope Francis to the young people moved me. He urged them, “swim against the tide!” He encouraged them to go out into the world for they have much to share: their enthusiasm, creativity and joy. Those were powerful words. What also struck was the music. The songs sung during the mass were touching. Employing simple lyrics and easy melody, the songs captivated and induced others to sing along. As the camera pans through the crowd, I could see everyone singing, eyes closed, body swaying and hands waving in the air. That is true music. It is singing from the heart and from the soul. As Pope Francis himself explained that when the psalmist says, “Sing a new song to the Lord,” he is not talking about a set of lyrics or a hummable melody. He is inviting us to allow our lives to be identified with that of Jesus, to share his sentiments, his thoughts and actions. When we sing at mass, we sing not from the lips but from the deep within, from feelings and from convictions. Singing at mass can truly be a unique spiritual experience. The bishops affirm that “God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises.” Music is a way for God to lead us to a higher level, to an experience of the divine. Music is capable of expressing dimensions of meaning and feeling that words alone cannot convey. Our Sunday liturgy is much poorer when we don’t sing. I urge everyone to participate actively at our Sunday mass. Sing with the congregation. Sing from the heart. Sing your praises to God. *** The gospel today tells us: “Do not to be afraid.” It’s also the message of Pope Francis in Copacabana to the young people: “Dear young friends, as you return to your homes, do not be afraid to be generous with Christ, to bear witness to his gospel.”
