THE PROSODY OF DECLARATIVES AND INTERROGATIVES IN CATALAN: A COMPARATIVE STUDY IN THE AMPER PROJECT A. Ma. Fernández Planas, L. Romera Barrios, P. Roseano, E. Martínez Celdrán & J. Carrera Sabaté Universitat de Barcelona Acknowledgement: MCI, ref. FFI2009-09309/FILO The AMPER project Results S The AMPER Project, promoted by the Centre de Dialectologie at the Stendhal-Grenoble3 University (France) since the 1990s, aims to collect and describe different prosodic samples of Romance languages in the framework of a multimedia atlas ([1, 2, 3]). In the Catalan-speaking area, the development of the project for Spanish and Catalan (both being co-official languages in most part of this area) under the direction of E. Martínez Celdrán is known as AMPERCAT. Goal Q Q que S To establish the most frequently label of broad focus statements and information-seeking yes-no questions sentences in Catalan within the Cat_ToBI framework. Methodology 63 broad focus statements (SVO), 63 interrogative sentences (SVO) & 63 information-seeking yes-no questions headed by the particle que and VOS (3 repetitions of each) in each speaker except in the last type in València, Castelló and Novelda (Total: 4,536 sentences) Catalan of Barcelona, Girona, Maó & l’Alguer (Eastern Catalan), Lleida, Tortosa, València, Castelló & Novelda (Western Catalan). Female speakers without university education. Goldwave, AMPER06, PRAAT, Reno, Extra, SPSS. AM labelling from Cat_ToBI ([6, 7]) & statistic and automatic labelling ([4, 5, 8] proposals). Q Q que Conclusions Peaks in the pre-nuclear positions (and also of the nuclear accent, if the sentence ends with a rising tone) are usually aligned with the post-tonic syllable (and, in proparoxytone words, with the syllable after the post-tonic). Peaks of oxytone words are lower than peaks of paroxytone words, and peaks of paroxytone words are lover than peaks of proparoxytone words If the sentence ends with a falling tone: final F0 values of oxytone words are higher than final F0 values of paroxytone words, and final F0 values of paroxytone words are higher than final F0 values of preparoxytone words. There are dialectal differences which do not get reflected in the phonological labeling. For this reason, the contribution of phonetics may not be disregarded if we want to achieve an adequate geointonational description of a language. References [1] Contini, M.
