Dear Senepol Breeders and Friends,
Apreciados Criadores de Senepol y Amigos,
The 2010 SCBA annual convention is here and we are looking forward to an excellent
event. If you have been following the previous issues of Senepol World, you are aware
that SCBA is working towards the Multi-breed analysis for this year and working hard
to generate funds to pay for the $10,000 price tag. We are expecting a great line up of
speakers this year including many from Louisiana State University and also from Dr. Sally
Northcutt, of Angus Genetics, Inc. The topics of discussion this year are on genetics and
multi-breed analysis and explaining what to expect from the new EPD procedure.
La convención anual de SCBA de 2010 está aquí y estamos mirando adelante a un

This year’s convention has us in the beautiful state of Louisiana and we have been
hosted by Genex, Corp. Both James and Hilde Chenevert have worked very hard to put
this convention together. From lining up speakers, meeting room space, food and storing
over 40 head of cattle, they have had a lot to do. We wish to extend a big thank you for
their hard work and dedication to the Senepol breed.

We have important changes to vote upon pertaining to our By-Laws this year as well.
If you have any questions about these change, please feel free to speak to me or our office
manager, Lisa Vorce and hopefully any concerns can be clarified.

Most importantly, we hope you enjoy your time at the convention and enjoy spending
time with fellow Senepol breeders. It is wonderful to know that the Senepol breed has
spread so far from its origins in the island of St. Croix. If it hadn’t been for those foundation breeders in St. Croix, the Senepol breed would never have influenced the tropical beef
market like it is today.

SCBA News
New Display for SCBA / Las Noticias de SCBA
In March this year, SCBA used some of its USLGE funding to purchase a Senepol display for the association, which can be used during
travel, conventions and fairs. The display is a 3 panel light weight display that can be transported easily through airports or in vehicles. The
graphics were done in English, Spanish and Portuguese and we were
excited to have a chance to use it on our most recent trip to Colombia,
Panama and Costa Rica. We are proud to be able to use this display at
the upcoming convention.
En marzo de este año, SCBA utilizó algunos de sus fondos de USLGE para comprar una pantalla para mostrar la raza de Senepol para
la asociación, que puede ser usado durante el viaje, convenciones y ferias. La pantalla es una pantalla de 3 Paneles de peso ligero que puede
ser transportado fácilmente a través de aeropuertos o en los vehículos.

CUP Laboratory / El Laboratorio de CUP
We are proud to announce that the CUP Laboratory in Ames, Iowa
and Angus Genetics Inc., have worked together and have established
the same adjustment factors as AGI. This is good news as the data received from CUP Laboratory is more consistent with the EPDs we have
calculated through AGI. Many thanks to Jerry White for spearheading
this endeavor.

The following directors’ terms are up for re-election and as we do
every year, we wish to thank these directors for their hard work with the
Senepol breed: Dr. John DeGroote, Mr. Carl Parker, Mr. Hans Lawaetz
and Mr. Patrick Pitti. These men have put in many hours of their time
to serve the Senepol breed and we thank them for their efforts.

The Nominating Committee would like to submit the following
people’s names for nomination to serve on the board of directors for
the 2010-2013 term at this year’s convention: Dr. John DeGroote, Mr.
Carl Parker, Mr. Hans Lawaetz, Mr. Patrick Pitti and Mr. Mitch Fry. As
always, nominations will be accepted from the floor during our first session on Wednesday, June 17th. So long as the person being nominated
is willing to serve and is eligible to be on the ballot, any person interested in serving on the SCBA Board of Directors will be given a place
on the ballot.

Resignation of Mr. Curtis Ludlum/
Dimisión del Sr. Ludlum Curtis
The SCBA Board of Directors accepted the resignation of Mr. Curtis Ludlum early this year. Mr. Ludlum has loved raising Senepol cattle
and has been a good board member since 2008. Luckily for him, he had
an opportunity to go into retirement and was able to sell his ranch and
is now enjoying the beautiful beaches of North Carolina and spending
more time with his family and friends. We wish the best of luck to Mr.
Ludlum and his wife Marie in your retirement together.

Ludlum a principios de este año. El Sr. Ludlum ha amado la cría de

to replace his vacant term with Mr. Mallone Mitchell of Sanderson, TX.
Mr. Mitchell has been a large operation cattle rancher for many years
and purchased his first Senepols from RAB Ranch in 2009. He is an
excellent addition to the SCBA Board of Directors. We welcome your
presence on the board.

You must register your name and address and receive a buyer number.

Each sale animal will have a designated lot number along with a
minimum selling price determined by the consignor.

Each bid at pen-side will increase in $50.00 increments.

Interested buyers can bid by writing their asssigned buyer number

All sale lots with one bid will be declared sold and accepted by

the bids. If you did not place a bid at pen-side, you cannot bid on that

If you bid at pen-side on more lots than you intend to purchase, after a
purchase is declared you may void bids on other lots.

Health: A veterinarian will be available sale day to write health
certificates for interstate transfer at no cost to the buyer. An
update breeding and sale sheet will also be available sale day.

Lot Numbers: Ear tags on sale cattle correspond to the lot numbers in

Term: The cattle sell under the standard Terms and Conditions as
recommended by the Senepol Cattle Breeders Association.

RE: By-Law Changes
Listed below is a summary of the prosposed change voted upon and passed by the SCBA Board of Directors. The reason behind this change is because our current By-Laws have portions of it that are currently written in such a way that they can be interpreted multiple ways, or cannot be followed because we have changed
as an organization over the years and our By-Laws have not. We will be voting upon these changes at the convention in Baton Rouge, LA.

Article II, Section 3 - Add "Charter Members are commonly referred to as "Lifetime Members"
Article II, Section 5 - Add "All classes of membership can be considered inactive if they do not fulfill the criteria listed above in this section"
Article II, Section 10 - Change word "Rules" to "By-Laws".
Article II, Section 11 - Add the words "Active" before "Founding members" and "Charter members". Add section highlighted starting with
" All SCBA Members will be certified eligible to vote " through the end of this paragraph.
Article III, Section 2 - Add the words "Active" before "Founding members" and "Charter members".
Article III, Section 3.1 - Re-written completely to re-establish the nominating committee.
Article III, Section 3.2 (old) - This section was deleted, it was repetitive.
Article III, Section 3.2 - This section added the regions and re-writes the regional director constraints.
Article III, Section 3.3 - This section explains the At-Large Directors constraints.
Article III, Section 3.4 - Added new section "A director is considered to be from the region in which his cattle resides.
If a nominee has cattle in two or more regions, he/she will be from the region of his/her home address.
Article III, Section 3.5 - Add "Only Active Foundation Members, Active Charter Members (also commonly referred to as Life-time Members)
and Active Members may vote and be elected to serve on the board of directors.
Article III, Section 3.6 - Add "If a director resigns, he/she will be replaced at the next annual membership meeting after the resignation.
As this term will be less than three years, the newly elected director receiving the least amount of votes will fulfill the remaining term.
This term will be up the year the original vacancy’s term would have ended."
Article III, Section 3.7 - Add: "At the annual membership meeting, voting members must vote for the number of candidates as is number
of seats available.
Article III, Section 3.8 – Added new section regarding counting of ballots.
Article IV, Section 1 - Added the words "Active" before Founding and Charter.
Article IV, Section 7 - Addition of "(c) The President shall not vote on any motion at a director's meeting unless a vote is needed to break a tie.
All the other letters moved down accordingly.
Article V, Section 2 - Nominating Committee - this section was modified to reflect the updates in Article III,
Section 3.1.

Senepol Semen Inventory Auction
To help raise money to fund the Multi-breed analysis, the following breeders have donated semen and embryos to be part of an auction during the banquet
of the 2010 SCBA Convention. All donation are tax deducible and SCBA will
write a receipt for tax purposes upon request.

involved in this matter. Please bid in the spirit of supporting SCBA programs.

A delegation from SCBA went to Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica
in March this year to promote SCBA and the Senepol breed using USLGE
funds. The following people were on the delegation and listed below is a
summary of what we accomplished while there: Carl Parker, Patrick Pitti,
Pedro Alejandro Restrepo, Lisa Vorce and Hans Lawaetz (Costa Rica only).

y la raza Senepol. Las siguientes personas estuvieron en la delegación y
abajo se detalla un resumen de lo que logramos allí: Carl Parker, Patrick

Summary from Colombia/ Resumen de Colombia
The first country we visited on this trip was Colombia. The original
plan to meet with breeders one on one was probably premature because most
breeders were not familiar with the WHR program. Therefore, the first day

Colombia fue el primer país que visitamos en este viaje. El plan original de reunirnos con cada uno de los criadores probablemente fue prematuro porque la mayoría de ellos no estaban familiarizados con el programa
WHR( Reporte Total del Hato por sus siglas en Ingles). Por lo tanto, el
primer día allí un martes, nos reunimos con los criadores de 10 am a 6 pm
en la oficina de Pedro, en Custodiar SA. Les explicamos al grupo el WHR,
se le hizo una demostración en vivo del programa de la SCBA utilizando
un proyector y se respondieron las preguntas concernientes al programa.
Hubo muchos impresionados con que pudiéramos darles de inmediato los
números de registro después de ingresar los animales en la base de datos.
Como regla general, todos los criadores en los tres países visitados se impresionaron con el software que usamos para el ingreso de animales.
The following day, Wednesday, we went to a ranch owned by Pedro
and Pedro hosted a viewing of cattle where he and his staff taught breeders
how to take hip height measurements, take scrotal circumferences, discuss
characteristics of the Senepol breed to be aware of (rat tail, double muscling, fertility etc). While this presentation was going on, Lisa worked in
the office with Teresita (office manager for Pedro Restrepo), Samanda and
Monica along with some of Pedro's technical people. They learned how
to enter data into the database and felt comfortable to be able to do this on
their own. After the demonstration we went to enjoy a BBQ with the breeders. In total, we distributed over 30 Sire Summaries and Convention Recap
Senepol World Magazines to those people who attended the demonstrations
on Wednesday.

The Colombian Senepol Association (ASO Senepol Colombia) is a
very organized group. They have already 2 people on staff who register
their animals at this time. Samanda and Monica are based out of Bogotá.
Their President, Mr. Ricardo Sanchez supports SCBA and the registry program very much. He wants the registry for ASO Senepol Colombia to go
to SCBA and this is important. He is well liked by the members of his
organization and they are receptive to what he suggests.
La Asociación Colombiana de Senepol (ASO Senepol Colombia) es un
grupo muy organizado. Tienen dos personas en el Staff quienes registran
los animales. Samanda y Monica tienen su sede en Bogotá. El Presidente,
Sr Ricardo Sánchez respalda mucho la SCBA su programa de registro. El
promueve los registros de ASO Senepol Colombia en la SCBA y esto es
importante. El está muy ligado a los miembros de la organización y estuvo
muy receptivo a nuestras recomendaciones.
We have since registered over 1,000 head of cattle and are working on
their WHR for 2010. The SCBA office and ASO Senepol Colombia have
been working together through email and instant messaging. They have 18
members with SCBA and we expect to add to that figure in the future.
Hasta ahora hemos registrado más de 1,000 cabezas de ganado y estamos trabajando en su WHR para 2010. La oficina de la SCBA y ASO
Senepol Colombia han estado trabajando juntas por correo electrónico y

Our trip to
Panama began
on Wednesday,
March 17th in
the evening after we left Colombia. We met

cousins for dinner and retired

estadía en la Ciudad de Panamá registramos los siguientes criadores:
We worked from 9 am - 7 pm registering and explaining the program.
In total for the above breeders, we registered 97 animals while in Panama City.

The following morning, we left by 5 am to arrive in David Panama for
the fair. The office was very convenient for breeders as they could come
into the office on the fairgrounds as they had time and work with me one on
one. We were sharing the office with the Panamanian Quarter Horse Association. Here is a list of the breeders we met with in David, Panama:

We registered cattle at the fair on Friday and Saturday. The evening of
Saturday, A*Senepol Panama hosted a Senepol show where Pedro Restrepo
discussed the different attributes of the Senepol cattle. At the wishes and
consent of the breeders in Panama, they selected animals to give constructive criticism to for breed characteristics. This was done very tactfully and
was well received. During this event, I handed out 50 Sire Summaries and
50 Convention recap issues to breeders while there along with 50 brochures
and bumper stickers.
El Viernes y Sábado registramos animales en la Feria. La tarde del
Sábado, la A*Senepol de Panamá invite a una exhibición donde Pedro Restrepo explico los diferentes atributos del ganado Senepol. A voluntad de
los criadores Panameños, se seleccionaron animales para hacer con ellos
una crítica constructiva de las características de la raza. Esta fue hecha
con mucho tacto y estuvo bien recibida. Durante este evento, entregue en
mano 50 Resúmenes de Padres y 50 Resúmenes de la Convención a los
criadores además de 50 brochures y pegatinas para los carros.
We also carried with us 30 sets (10 samples per set) of Pfizer Animal
Genetic DNA samples. We discussed the importance of DNA and left 20 in
Panama so they can get their DNA up to date. There were few that needed
DNA done, but the upcoming group of calves will need DNA so they are
planning for the future.
También llevamos con nosotros 30 juegos (10 muestras por juego)
para muestras de ADN de Pfizer Genética Animal. Comentamos la importancia del ADN y dejamos 20 juegos en Panamá para que pudieran actualizar sus ADN. Hubo pocos que necesitaron hacer ADN, pero el grupo de
crías por nacer necesitaran ADN así que se planeo con futuro.
The comments I heard from Roberto Ureña is that he really appreciated this visit. He felt it was very productive and he would like to see more
visits like this in the future. The big news in Panama at this time is that
one of the two major grocery stores in Panama has approached A*Senepol
to have certified Senepol crossed beef for sale at their supermarkets. This
news is very exciting for SCBA because to be a part of this program, the
breeders must be able to certify the animals are Senepol, and they will do
this by providing the grocery store with a certificate for each animal. This
means each animal that is a Senepol crossbred in Panama will be paid a
premium by their consumer. This means we are going to see many more
registrations from Panama in the very new future.
Los comentarios que escuche de Roberto Ureña fueron que realmente
apreciaron nuestra visita. El sintió que fue muy productiva y le gustaría
ver más visitas como esta en el futuro. La gran noticia en Panamá en
este momento es que una de las dos mayores cadenas de alimentación en
Panamá busco a la A*Senepol para que certificara carne de animales cruzados Senepol para vender en sus Supermercados. Estas noticias con muy
excitantes para la SCBA porque será parte de este programa, los criadores
deberán poder certificar que los animales tienen Senepol, y lo harán dando
a la empresa un certificado de cada animal. Esto significa que cada animal
que tenga cruce Senepol en panamá tendrá un precio superior que será
pagado por el cliente. Para nosotros significa que veremos muchos mas
registros desde Panamá en un futuro muy cercano.
Summary from Costa Rica/ Resumen de Costa Rica
Our trip to Costa Rica was primarily to meet with the breeders there,
help them organize a Senepol Association and introduce them to SCBA,
WHR and our cattle registry program. We were met at the airport by Stefano Murialdo and Juan Manuel Sanchez. We were taken to the hotel where
we checked in and prepared for the meeting with breeders at 3 pm. Our
meeting with breeders began at 3:00 and ended at 7:00 pm. The Costa
Rican Senepol breeders did not currently have a Senepol Association and
they had invited some breeders of Simbrah to the meeting in hopes that
they two breeds would work together. There was much discussion and they
are excited about registering with us and participating in WHR. Their first
estimates are 200 head into WHR for this year and of course catch-up registrations from there on out. Senepol has only been in Costa Rica for 3-4
years so there aren't that many catch-up registrations to be concerned about.
Pedro spoke on WHR and I gave a live presentation on registering animals
online with help from Pedro and Patrick. Again, they were very excited to
see how easy it is to register animals. Since the time of our meeting the
Costa Rican Senepol Association has been created and we are excited to
support them as their association grows.

criadores de allí, ayudarles en la organización de la Asociación y presentarles la SCBA, el WHR y nuestro programa de registro de ganado. En el
aeropuerto nos recibieron Stefano Murialdo y Juan Manuel Sánchez. Fuimos llevados al hotel donde nos chequeamos y preparamos para reunirnos
con los criadores a las 3 pm. La reunión con ellos comenzó a las 3:00 pm y
termino a las 7:00 pm. A esa fecha los criadores Costarricenses no tenían
Asociación Senepol e invitaron algunos criadores de Simbrah a la reunión
