Did you ever take a really close look at the bills
and coins we use every day? This week we’re reading
Many Countries, One Currrency: Europe and the Euro,
an article about currency. It is about the
euro, a currency used by many of the
countries in Europe. Many countries
opposed the currency. Supporters
used persuasion to convince
others to join their side. Today,
the euro is a success, helping
countries of Europe
compete economically.

Persuasive Points
People try to persuade us every day. Whenever we see
an ad, read an editorial, or listen to a political speech,
someone wants us to get the message. All of the
quotations below tell how to go about persuading people.
Let’s talk about each quote and what it means. How does
the writer feel about persuasion?
We persuade others by
being in earnest ourselves.
One of the best ways to persuade
others is with your ears—by listening
to them.
—Dean Rusk, author
The shepherd always tries
to persuade the sheep that
their interests and his own
are the same.
—Stendhal, novelist
—William Hazlitt, essayist
—Harry S. Truman, U.S.
President
If you would win a man to your cause,
first convince him that you are his
sincere friend. Therein is a drop of
honey that catches his heart, which, say
what you will, is the great high-road to
his reason.
—Abraham Lincoln, U.S. President
A man convinced against
his will is not convinced.
—Laurence J. Peter, author
Leadership appears to be the art
of getting others to want to do
something you are convinced should
be done.
—Vance Packard, nonfiction writer
Which quotes are respectful of persuasion
as a goal? Which of the quotes have a more
cynical tone?

I sit here all day trying to
persuade people to do the
things they ought to have
sense enough to do without my
persuading them.

¿Han mirado alguna vez con detención los billetes
y las monedas que usamos todos los días? Esta semana
estamos leyendo Many Countries, One Currency: Europe
and the Euro, un artículo sobre la moneda
circulante. Uno de los artículos trata a
fondo del euro, la unidad monetaria
usada en muchos países europeos.
Muchos países se oponían a un
cambio en su moneda. Los
que apoyaban el cambio
usaron la persuasión para
convencer a los demás
de que se les unieran.
Hoy, el euro tiene éxito
y ayuda a los países
de Europa a competir
económicamente.
