He began his homily with a resounding tribute to his father who taught him to persevere in all things. He grieves the recent death of his mother. His words flowed like the Mississippi, the river of his childhood and youth. The Arch in St. Louis and the old Cathedral beside the river gave life and hope to the City of God. He held an Angel’s baseball cap in his hand and calls Orange his home. There were many people who travelled from Texas to express their affection and support. The presence of Bishops from all over the country marked his reputation in the Catholic Conference of Bishops. Diocesan Liturgies now are beautiful, humble and prayerful. They manifest the diversity in our Church. The readings were in three languages, the General Intercessions were spoken in eight languages and Bishop Vann blessed us in five languages. There is usually a section for American Sign. Liturgy is the Fanfare for the Common Man. Through the Incarnation, Jesus became the Common Man “in all things but sin”. When Bishop Vann was led to the Cathedra (bishop’s chair), representatives from the Diocesan and Ecumenical Community were presented to him. I noted that there was a representative from the “Sexual Misconduct Review Board”. This gesture invited me to pray to Jesus for healing and reconciliation in His Body. In the words of the Eucharist we all prayed: We, your servants and your holy people, Offer to your glorious majesty From the gifts you have given us, This pure victim, This holy victim, This spotless victim, The holy Bread of Eternal Life. The Fanfare for the Common Man concluded outside on the grounds of the University of California at Irvine. The Grupo Foklorico del Central Cultural de Mexico danced and played drums while students prepared for finals or to be interviewed for admission to medical school. At Mass we placed a Mary Candle next to the ambo where it will remain until midnight mass on Christmas Eve. The candle covered by a white cloth is a symbol of the Virgin Mary expecting the birth of Jesus — the Light of the World. At the midnight mass on Christmas Eve, the candle will be uncovered and placed in the center of our Advent wreath (the Christ candle). It will be lit along with all the white candles on the wreath at all the masses on Christmas Day. Ministries FIELD TRIP Last Sunday a group of us involved in the RCIA process attended Mass at Mission Basilica in San Juan Capistrano. We have been planning and anticipating this exchange for a while and there was great excitement amongst the group that attended. Our Candidate, Natasha Spadea-Anello, and Inquirer, Shaun Garrett and his daughter, Alexa, were among those present. Natasha was “dismissed” as usual after the Homily and the rest of the group was invited up to the catechesis session after Mass. It was a wonderful encounter with Eileen Smith, Director of Faith Formation, their candidates, sponsors and catechists. To share the RCIA process with another church in our Deanery was a real gift to us. We plan to invite the Mission Basilica RCIA group to St. Catherine’s in the near future extending the same generous hospitality that welcomed us to the Basilica. Blessings, Donna Beam, RCIA Director Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2012 Page 6 Ministries YEAR END GIVING As you review your 2012 tax planning please consider fulfilling your 2012 One Ask Pledge, if you have not already done so. Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2012 Page 8 Around the Diocese St. Vincent de Paul’s Lights On Program assists hundreds of men and women released onto the streets from the O.C. jail during the overnight hours. Men and women exit the jail with the same clothing they were arrested in or in some cases have no clothing and are given jail issued paper jump suits. In either case, it is not enough to protect them from the chill of the winter night while Lights On volunteers search their resources for getting them safely off the streets. Warm clothing donations are greatly needed especially during these winter months. Of particular immediate need are new or used, jackets, sweaters or sweat outfits. P.
