DECIMONOVENO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
PRESENCE
It is difficult to be truly present to another. We
speak of putting in an appearance or showing up.
Even when we arrive, we are often distracted. We
think ahead, or we review an unsettled past. Nonetheless, we are at our best when we truly show up. We
are most fully ourselves when we are absorbed in
something worthy of us: creative work, good conversation, prayer. In these instances we are wholly ourselves and wholly outside ourselves.
Elijah knew this kind of engagement. He was one
of God’s great prophets. In today’s first reading, he
follows God’s command to journey to that most holy
place, Mount Horeb. And there in great silence, Elijah encounters God.
As for Peter and the apostles, they discover the
presence of God after the storm at sea. They and the
sea and the winds are stunned into silent reverence.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The L
said to Elijah: “Stand
on the mountain; the L
will be passing by”
(1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a).
Psalm — Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant
us your salvation (Psalm 85).
Second Reading — To the Israelites belong the covenants, the law, and the patriarchs; and from them
comes the Christ (Romans 9:1-5).
Gospel — As Jesus walked on the sea, the disciples
were terrified (Matthew 14:22-33).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Over the last several weeks, the history of confirmation has been set out as a rite following baptism
and preceding First Communion. Eucharist was a
sacrament of spiritual maturity, attuned to the legal
age of majority, which was considered to be fourteen
years or so. Medieval bishops were often generous, if
not especially pious, in seeing to it that children were
confirmed before adulthood.
A pattern more familiar to us surfaced in the Diocese of Toulon in France in 1748, where it was decreed that “children are to be confirmed only after
receiving First Communion.” This was an amazing
shift in practice that undermined centuries of theology and tradition by which confirmation was seen as a
bridge between font and table. The innovation swept
through France and across Europe, despite constant
complaints from Rome. French-trained bishops like
Cheverus of Boston and Carroll of Baltimore, founders of the American church, established the practice
here. The order of the sacraments was thus disrupted
in France and in the United States, and remained an
eccentric exception to the rule until big developments in 1910.

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
PRESENCIA

Youth Ministry/LIFE TEEN
LIFE Nights are meetings that immediately follow the Youth Mass on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:45 PM
and take place in the parish hall and are an integral part of a comprehensive youth ministry experience. Teens
in preparation for confirmation are expected to attend all nights. Focus for Life Nights include: Prayer & Worship, Community Building (Social), and Pastoral Care/Issue Nights. Our Confirmation preparation sessions
are more weighted on the catechetical component of youth ministry, but many components overlap the various
meetings.
Summer Schedule
August 10 – Off site family dinner/fundraiser: Panda Express, Imperial Highway (see attached flyer)
August 17 - Close Summer Activities Talent Show/Karaoke/lip sync
Sponsorship Lottery
This entry header has been present for a few weeks with no explanation. We apologize and have struggled to
find a catchy name for the campaign. The Donation Loteria as it has also been referred to has become a huge
success. We are grateful to those members of the community who have already drawn their number and contributed their donation. Thank you!
Youth Ministry has been in search of 50 donors who would be willing to donate up to $50, but are open to the
excitement of the chance to donate less. There are numbered cards 1-50. Donors draw a card and the number
on the card determines the donation. If you draw the number 6, you pay $6. 46, $46. It’s that simple! Not only that, 6 of the highest 7 numbers have already been selected, as have 6 of the first 7. Half of our donors have
already stepped forward. Will you be one? Draw your number after LIFE TEEN Mass any Sunday this summer or call the youth ministry office to get your name placed in a square.
Sacramental Preparation for High School Teens (Confirmation & First Communion)
Registration is Available NOW! Teens interested in getting involved in confirmation MUST first register for
youth ministry. Young ladies needing to register for youth ministry in order to schedule their Quinceañera are
also asked to register for youth ministry. All registration is now being handled through the Religious Education
office. A limited number of hard copies are available in the parish office or in the church.
Stay Connected
We in youth ministry are on a mission to stay more connected to our teens and their families than ever before.

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
DID YOU KNOW?
Summertime, safe time
All teachers, staff and volunteers in the Archdiocese must undergo fingerprinting and criminal background
checks. Archdiocesan guidelines and abuse prevention training programs currently in use in the Archdiocese
emphasize the importance of parents knowing who has access to their children at school and other churchsponsored activities. Summertime is here, and parents should remain vigilant regarding who is granted access to their children. Make sure camp counselors have undergone criminal background checks. And, make
sure you know the camp’s “daily routine.” In particular, make sure that no camp activity results in a child
being left alone with one adult. All activities should be supervised by more than one adult, and the camp
should be open to unannounced drop-in visits from parents. For more information email: Dn. Jaime Abrera,
Fingerprint Department,[email protected]
Jaime Abrera, Fingerprint Department, [email protected]
