In 1989, thanks to a fellowship FPU, MEC) joined the University Institute of Bio-Organic (IUBO) working on asymmetric synthesis and conformational studies of cyclononyl systems under the direction of Prof. Jesús T. Vazquez continuing his doctoral studies on the anomeric effect of monosaccharides using exciton method in circular dichroism and molecular modeling techniques, receiving his Ph. D. in 1993. Later that same year he moved to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri (USA.) with a post-doctoral fellowship (MEC). He joined the group of Prof. R. Garland Marshall conducting structural studies and solid phase synthesis of protease inhibitors of the HIV virus through 1995. That year, he returns to Spain (IUBO, ULL) and joined the group of Prof Julio D. Martin involved in structural studies, using molecular modelling, of trans-fused polycyclic systems, mimics of polyether marine toxins. In 1996 he moved with the group of Prof Julio D. Martin to the Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas (IIQ, CSIC) in Seville and begins to work on structural studies of synthetic analogues of ion channels, as well as being in charge of the scientific computational resources of the center. In 1998, he was awarded with the Skinner Prize (RSC) at the the 111th Faraday Discussion in Bristol (UK). Since 2004 he is working at the Natural Products and Agrobiology Institute (IPNA, CSIC) conducting computational studies about the water role inside of synthetic ion channels. In 2012 he joined the group of Dr. Tomas Martin.
