RELIGIOSIDAD
CAMINOS DE EMOCIÓN
Uno de los eventos más singulares de la ciudad es su SEMANA SANTA
que en Lucena tiene un estilo propio e inconfundible que mezcla
arte, estética y tradición. Su mayor seña de identidad proviene de
todas las singularidades que constituyen el mundo de ‘La Santería’,
una tradición única por la forma de portar los tronos, sumada a una
magnífica riqueza imaginera. Las imágenes son llevadas a hombros
por los ‘santeros’, que ataviados con túnicas y a cara descubierta,
portan los tronos con unas estrictas normas de respeto y severa
solemnidad. Son también representativos ‘el torralbo’, que anuncia el
paso de algunas procesiones, y el toque de tambor, elemento sustancial en ‘el santear’.
Otro de los acontecimientos festivos más importantes de Lucena son
sus FIESTAS ARACELITANAS. El tradicional pregón, una multitudinaria
ofrenda de flores y la procesión de la titular bajo un manto de fuegos
artificiales, originan el fervor de una fiesta disfrutada por cientos de
visitantes y en la que la devoción del pueblo se pone de manifiesto
en el recorrido hacia el Santuario de la Virgen de Araceli. Recorrido
que se repite en las ROMERÍAS de Subida y Bajada.
PATRIMONIO
CAMINOS DE CULTURA
La herencia de un importante pasado judío, árabe y cristiano, la
convirtieron en próspero enclave que atesora un rico patrimonio
histórico y artístico. A través de la calle de las Flores de Negrón se
accede al popular BARRIO DE SANTIAGO, posible arrabal de la Lucena
judía donde podemos visitar la PARROQUIA DE SANTIAGO, en cuya
construcción se reutilizaron los materiales de la antigua sinagoga. De
su legado sefardí posee la NECRÓPOLIS JUDÍA excavada más grande
de la Península Ibérica.
LUCENA
Su nombre proviene de Eli-ossana, nombre hebreo
que significa ‘Dios nos guarde’.
The town was originally known as Eliossana, from
the Hebrew "May God save us" but called al-Yussana by
the Moors.
Denominada entonces por los musulmanes como al-Yussana, Lucena vivió uno de sus esplendores en la primera
época musulmana, siendo una de las principales poblaciones judías de Al-andalus. Estuvo habitada exclusivamente por judíos entre los siglos IX y XII y contó con una
importante escuela universitaria en este período.
During the early Moorish era, the town lived one of its
splendours, being one of the Al-Andalus's main Jewish
towns. From the 9th to the 11th century the town was
exclusively populated by Jews and boasted an important
university school during this era.
En 1483, Diego III Fernández de Córdoba derrotó y apresó
al último rey de Granada Boabdil que fue encerrado en la
Torre del Castillo del Moral.

locked in the Castillo del Moral castle's tower.
Durante el siglo XVI Lucena comienza un rápido crecimiento demográfico pasando de 1.500 habitantes en
1495 a más de 15.000 en 1550, concediéndole Felipe III en
1618 el título de Ciudad.
Lucena's population began to grow rapidly during the
16th century, with 1,500 inhabitants in 1495 and more
than 15,000 in 1550. In 1618, King Philip III granted
Lucena its town status.
En el siglo XVIII Lucena se convierte en una de las grandes
ciudades barrocas andaluzas. In the 18th century, Lucena became one of Andalusia's
largest baroque towns.
En la actualidad cuenta con 42.500 habitantes y se distingue por ser uno de los centros productivos del mueble
más importantes del sur de España.

El barroco cordobés alcanza su máxima expresión en el imponente
SAGRARIO DE SAN MATEO, dentro de la parroquia del mismo
nombre, de la que también destaca su magnífico retablo. El barroco
lucentino se completa visitando las iglesias de SAN MARTÍN, SAN
JUAN BAUTISTA Y EL SANTUARIO DE LA VIRGEN DE ARACELI y la
IGLESIA DE LOS FRANCISCANOS.
En el centro de la ciudad se encuentra EL CASTILLO DEL MORAL,
fortaleza medieval declarada monumento histórico nacional, donde
estuvo prisionero Boabdil, el último rey de Granada. En su interior se
encuentra el Museo Arqueológico y Etnologico.
GASTRONOMÍA
CAMINOS DE LOS SENTIDOS
Sus magníficos VINOS, enmarcados bajo la D.O. Montilla-Moriles,
gozan de gran fama y prestigio desde antiguo, existiendo aún importantes bodegas en la localidad. De igual calidad son sus ACEITES DE
OLIVA VIRGEN EXTRA producidos en sus cooperativas con denominación de origen propia.
Los ‘BOLOS’, las NARANJAS ‘PICÁS’ CON BACALAO, las ALBÓNDIGAS DE
BOQUERONES, o el SALMOREJO, son algunos de los exquisitos platos
que podremos degustar en sus establecimientos. También es
destacada la tradición repostera local sobre todo representada por
sus tradicionales DULCES DE PESTIÑOS o SOPAIPAS a los que se suma
la recuperación de dulces hebreos.
FIESTAS Y TRADICIONES
CAMINOS DE LA TRADICIÓN
Bajo el toque de la guitarra, resuena el FANDANGO DE LUCENA como
palo representante de los cantes abandolaos y de vinculación
malagueña que aún hoy se disfrutan en establecimientos y peñas
flamencas de la ciudad.
El patrimonio musical de Lucena se ve reflejado en los numerosos
CONCIERTOS, CERTÁMENES y PRESTIGIOSOS FESTIVALES DE MÚSICA,
que ponen en valor su legado musical folclórico y religioso, siendo
algunas de ellas, importantes citas con la música tradicional y
contemporánea.
El tiempo de bailes, color, músicas y alegrías es el de la FERIA REAL
NTRA. SRA. DEL VALLE, celebrada a principios de septiembre.
ARTESANÍA
CAMINOS DE LO AUTÉNTICO
Lucena es cuna de renombrados artesanos con tradición familiar de
varias generaciones, que con sus manos saben convertir en arte la
materia. Son de reconocido prestigio, desde época romana, los
ALFARES lucentinos donde se realizan piezas únicas, de tradición
árabe, con decoración y esmaltes característicos, siendo tal su importancia, que en un tiempo estuvieron agrupados en el Barrio de las
Tinajerías.
De igual prestigio son los talleres de ORFEBRERÍA Y BRONCE, con EL
VELÓN DE LUCENA como pieza más característica y símbolo de la
ciudad, e igualmente trabajos exquisitos relacionados, en su mayoría,
con el ARTE SACRO, que adornan los tronos de los pasos de la
Semana Santa de toda España.
NATURALEZA Y PAISAJES
CAMINOS DE LA NATURALEZA
El término de Lucena forma parte del espacio protegido Lagunas del
Sur de Córdoba, con un alto valor ecológico. Especialmente interesante es la visita a las lagunas de LAGUNA AMARGA y LAGUNA
DULCE, muy cercanas pero completamente diferentes según sus
características químicas. EL PARAJE NATURAL DEL EMBALSE DE
MALPASILLO, donde reside el calomón y la escasa malvasía, completa
un entorno en el que se ubica también la conocida LAGUNA
CIRCULAR DE LOS JARALES. Desde la SIERRA DE ARAS, donde se
encuentra el Real Santuario de María Santísima de Araceli, se divisan
en días claros hasta veinticinco municipios de varias provincias. La
zona es frecuentada por amantes de la espeleología y el parapente
que acuden en busca de sus pronunciadas grutas, ya que cuenta
además con las infraestructuras necesarias. En la ladera sur, LA SIMA
DE LA CUEVA DEL ÁNGEL encierra un yacimiento arqueológico de
gran importancia de época preneandertal y neandertal.
El RÍO ANZUR, a su paso por Lucena, ofrece al visitante un interesante
paisaje dominado por la vegetación de ribera, donde chopos, sauces y
olmos visten su orilla de intensos verdes. También LA VÍA VERDE DE LA
SUBBÉTICA permite disfrutar a ciclistas y senderistas de los hermosos
paisajes del PARQUE NATURAL DE LAS SIERRAS SUBBÉTICAS.
Caminos de Pasión es una ruta cultural para descubrir la
tradición de la Semana Santa, el patrimonio, la gastronomía, el
folclore, la artesanía, la naturaleza y los paisajes de diez municipios
del corazón geográfico de Andalucía, emblemáticos por su riqueza
histórica.
Alcalá la Real en Jaén; Baena, Cabra, Lucena, Priego de Córdoba y
Puente Genil en Córdoba y Carmona, Écija, Osuna y Utrera, en
Sevilla, ofrecen al visitante la posibilidad de adentrarse en una
Andalucía auténtica, donde conocer y sentir la ancestral y fervorosa

Religiosidad-Caminos de Emoción. Una Semana Santa inigualable; un

vive durante todo el año con fiestas y manifestaciones llenas de emoción
y tradición.
Patrimonio-Caminos de Cultura. Un patrimonio histórico-artístico en
el que impresionantes edificios religiosos y civiles, yacimientos y
enclaves milenarios nos invitan a viajar por la historia.
Gastronomía-Caminos de los Sentidos. Extraordinarios aceites de
oliva virgen, vinos, repostería artesana y productos locales articulan una
excelente gastronomía, basada en nuestra herencia andaluza y que se
refleja en las riquísimas recetas de su cocina tradicional.
Fiestas y Tradiciones-Caminos de Tradición. Tradiciones y alegres
fiestas populares se suceden durante todo el año y dejan espacio
también a ferias y romerías profundamente arraigadas y en las que el
folclore y el flamenco encuentran su más pura y genuina expresión.
Artesanía-Caminos de lo Auténtico. El trabajo de los artesanos de esta
tierra cuenta con el aval de la tradición y la historia y se muestra en
verdaderas obras de arte; bellas piezas hechas a mano y elaboradas hoy
como hace siglos.

RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS
CAMINOS OF EMOTION
Lucena's Easter Week celebrations have an individual and distinctive
style, which mixes art, aesthetics and tradition. The town is best
known for "La Santería", the unique way the floats, locally called
tronos, or thrones, are carried through the streets, not to mention the
wonderful sculptures that sit atop them. The men who carry the
floats are called santeros and follow strict rules of respect and
solemnity. They stand on the outside of the float and take the weight
of a beam on their shoulders. They wear tunics and hoods, but their
faces are uncovered. Other important aspects are the torralbo, which
announces the arrival of some of the processions with an untuneful
fanfare, and the solemn beating of the drum, which is essential to
helping the santeros keep their marching rhythm.
Another of Lucena’s most important festivities are the ARACELITANA
CELEBRATIONS. The religious fervour of these events is enjoyed by
hundreds of visitors and demonstrated by the traditional
proclamation, an avalanche of floral offerings and the Virgen de Araceli
procession under a blanket of fireworks. The whole town displays its
devotion during the PILGRIMAGES to accompany the Virgin Mary
statue on its ascent to and descent from the Virgen de Araceli
sanctuary, which is perched on a hill outside of the town.
HERITAGE
CAMINOS OF CULTURE
Lucena is built on the significant heritage of its Jewish, Arab and
Christian past, endowing it with rich artistic and historic legacy. Calle
Flores de Negrón leads to the popular quarter known as the BARRIO
DE SANTIAGO, which was possibly once part of Lucena’s Jewish area.
Known as The Pearl of Sepharad, Lucena possesses the largest
excavated JEWISH NECROPOLIS to be found anywhere in the Iberian
Peninsula. Here we can visit the PARROQUIA DE SANTIAGO, a parish
church built using material from the old synagogue.

El PALACIO DE LOS CONDES DE SANTA ANA es otra de las joyas del
barroco civil cordobés, recientemente restaurado y habilitado como
centro de interpretación de la ciudad de Lucena.
The finest example of the Cordoban Baroque-style can be found in
the imposing SAGRARIO DE SAN MATEO, located inside the San
Mateo parish church, which also has a magnificent altarpiece.

Lucena’s Baroque style can also be experienced by visiting the SAN
MARTÍN AND SAN JUAN BAUTISTA CHURCHES; THE VIRGEN DE
ARACELI SANCTUARY and the LOS FRANCISCANOS CHURCH.
CONDES DE SANTA ANA PALACE is another example of extraordinary
Cordoban civil Baroque architecture, and was recently restored as
Lucena's visitor centre. THE CASTILLO DEL MORAL castle, where
Boabdil, the last Muslim king of Granada was held prisoner, is in the
centre of the town.
GASTRONOMY
CAMINOS OF THE SENSES
The area’s magnificent WINES, which carry the Montilla-Moriles
denomination of origin, are widely acclaimed and have enjoyed
considerable prestige since time immemorial, with several important
bodegas still existing in the town. The EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OILS
produced by local cooperatives are of the same quality.
BOLOS (meatballs), ORANGES WITH SALT COD, ANCHOVY MEATBALLS
and SALMOREJO (a cold smooth tomato-based cream) are just a few
of the dishes that can be sampled in Lucena's eating establishments.
The town's confectionery is also noteworthy, especially its traditional
PESTIÑOS and SOPAIPAS; Hebrew pastries are also making a revival.
FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONS
CAMINOS OF TRADITION
The LUCENA FANDANGO is played to the sound of guitar and the
rhythm of traditional abandolaos songs -linked to the Malagueña
flamenco style- which you can still enjoy in some of the town’s bars
and flamenco clubs.
Lucena’s musical heritage is reflected by the numerous CONCERTS,
COMPETITIONS and ACCLAIMED MUSIC FESTIVALS that showcase
the town's folkloric and religious musical legacy, some of which are
highlighted on traditional and contemporary music agendas.
The town’s main period of dancing, music and celebration is the
ROYAL FAIR OF NUESTRA SENORA DEL VALLE, which is held in early
September.

ARTS & CRAFTS
CAMINOS OF AUTHENTICITY
Lucena is famed for its artisans with their family traditions of creating
art by hand stretching back generations. Since Roman times,
Lucena’s POTTERY has enjoyed widespread prestige, and the town
still produces unique pieces based on Arab traditions with
characteristic decoration and enamel; the pottery industry was once
so important that it congregated together in the Barrio de las
Tinajerías neighbourhood. The town’s PRECIOUS METAL AND
BRONZE workshops are equally prestigious, with the VELÓN DE
LUCENA being the most traditional piece and the town’s symbol. The
town also produces exquisite WORKS OF ART, most of which are
related to sacred art and are used to adorn the floats used in Easter
week processions all over Spain.
NATURE AND LANDSCAPES
CAMINOS OF NATURE
Lucena lies within the boundaries of the Lagunas del Sur de Cordoba
protected area, a key ecological space. Of particular interest are the
two lagoons known as LAGUNA AMARGA (Bitter Lagoon) and
LAGUNA DULCE (Freshwater Lagoon), physically very close to one
another but completely different in terms of the chemical make-up
of their water. Other places to visit in the region are the circular
lagoon known as Laguna de los Jarales and the PARAJE NATURAL DEL
EMBALSE DE MALPASILLO (Malpasillo Reservoir Nature Area), habitat
to the purple swamp hen and the rare white-headed duck. The
Virgen de Araceli sanctuar stands in the SIERRA DE ARAS, a small peak
from which twenty-five towns and villages belonging to several
provinces can be made out on a clear day. The area’s deep canyons
and chasms and its specialized infrastructures make it very popular
among cavers and paragliders. On the southern slope, the shaft in
the CUEVA DEL ÁNGEL (Cave of the Angel) was greatly important
during the pre-Neanderthal and Neanderthal eras.
The RIVER ANZUR, at the point where it flows through Lucena, offers
visitors a spectacular riverine landscape marked by the lush green
tones of the poplar, willows and elm trees that line its banks. THE VÍA
VERDE SUBBÉTICA HIKING PATH allows cyclists and and hikers to fully
enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Sierras Subbeticas Nature Park.
Caminos de Pasión is a cultural route that enables visitors to
explore the Easter Week traditions, heritage, gastronomy, folklore,
arts and crafts, nature and landscapes of ten towns in the
geographical heart of Andalusia, which are emblematic for their
historic wealth.
Alcalá la Real in Jaén; Baena, Cabra, Lucena, Priego de Córdoba and
Puente Genil in Córdoba, and Carmona, Écija, Osuna and Utrera in
Seville invite visitors to explore authentic Andalusia, where they can

Arts & Crafts-Caminos of Authenticity. The work produced by the
region’s craftspeople is steeped in tradition and history, as displayed

Nature and Landscapes-Caminos of Nature. Beautiful hiking paths
trace out a natural map to discover lakes, mountains, caves, nature
reserves and rolling fields of crops that reflect the wealth of the region's
