BONAVENTURE HIGH SCHOOL: 3167 Telegraph Road Mr. Marc Groff, Principal. School Office: (805) 648-6836 Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal Seeking a child’s heart Buscar ser niño de Corazón Today’s readings and prayers remind us to approach God with the heart of a child which is open and trusting – unblemished by adult insecurities. Saint James speaks to this point as he writes to his community about what they should desire and seek. He says, “You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, [spending] it on your passions.” Saint James reminds us that “where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice.” This is the situation in the gospel where the apostles are arguing about “who [is] the greatest.” Jesus’ teachings of love of God and neighbor are being drowned out by human ambitions which provoke the fearful responses that are listed in the Book of Wisdom. These human ambitions corrupt the heart of the “wicked one” who enumerates the evil actions he wishes “to beset against the just one.” Jealousy and fear have challenged goodness. Jesus understands this as he silences the apostles’ discussion by drawing a child close to him, and reminding the apostles how they should approach God and one another. He tells them to drop all pretense and posturing and remember that, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” This proclamation focuses on the heart of a child which is guileless and without standing. Absolute trust, the complete abandonment from fear, is the disposition we must seek in our relationship with God. As we embrace his promise to be our Lord for ever, we proclaim, “Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life. «I will praise your name, O Lord, for its goodness” {Responsorial Psalm}. (Salmo Responsorial) Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service. Serra Pope Francis will be canonizing Father Junípero Serra, the founder of the California Missions and faithful apostle, on September 23, 2015, during his first Papal visit to the United States. The canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra is a great blessing for our Church, for our state and our nation. He will be the first Hispanic Saint from the United States and will be the first U.S. Saint canonized on American soil. Did you know that in 1773, Serra traveled to Mexico City and presented a list of grievances, Representación, to Viceroy Bucareli delineating 32 points of contention? He insisted that soldier immorality, especially the violation of Native American women, was widespread. He urged the Viceroy to replace the military commander in California. The Viceroy agreed to this. The Viceroy’s entire response to Serra became known as “the first significant body of laws to govern early California.” Little Bethlehem Little Bethlehem will be selling their works of art made from the trimmings of the holy land live trees after all the masses this weekend. The olive wood has a unique beauty and quality that is not found in other wood. The fixed collar is a result of oil in the wood fibers. The beauty of the grains, ripples, and the contrasting color lines makes each one by itself, eyecatching. These carvings don’t need much care since olive oil naturally protects them from corrosion and changes of color. Presently, there are 30 families in the city of Bethlehem who still practice this art, and depend on it as their source of income. Our NOURA family is one of Bethlehem’s oldest families and they are proud to continue the olive wood carving tradition.
