"O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" ~ Matthew 14:33
My dear parishioners,
Today’s readings point to two surprising places where we find the Lord: in the quiet and in the storm.
Elijah is running for his life and he goes to the holy mountain. He looks for a sign of God’s presence in
the wind, in the earthquake, and in fire, but God was in none of those places. Sometimes God comes
to us not in the spectacular, but in the ordinary, the everyday, the routine of our lives. St. Thomas
Aquinas said that God’s sustaining the universe, keeping it going everyday, is as awesome as its creation. If God ceased caring for us, we would cease to exist. Every breath and every heartbeat is a sign
of God’s presence. God comes to us in the quiet and silence and in prayer. Do we take time to meet
God in the silences?
There are not only the silences, there are also the storms. We all experience the storms of life,
whether those storms have to do with children, marriage, finances, health, emotional problems, work,
or other people. Our instinct when the storm comes is to think that God has abandoned us. But the
Gospel tells us that the Lord is with us even in the storm. Jesus says “It is I, do not be afraid.”
The church, the boat, is built not only for calm days, but for storms. Not only for a few people but for
everyone. The church is a sturdy boat that has lasted two thousand years and helped billions of people weather gigantic storms. We hang on to our Catholic life together when the personal storms come.
Two places where every single one of us can meet Christ are in the silence and the storm. Christ is
there in both.
I am away on vacation today for the next few weeks to find God in the quiet, and at the beach with family and friends. I rejoice in the gift of Nativity parish, my new home. Thank you for the warm welcome
that you have given me and I have enjoyed meeting you and your beautiful families.I look forward to a
new year of parish life together. It’s an exciting time to be at Nativity with all the life, joy , ministry ,
charitable outreach and as we discern beginning the new Parish Activities Center and Office Building
Project. God will guide us according to His will and then give us the grace to do it.

Do Other Christian Denominations Proclaim the Same Readings on
Sundays That Catholics Do?
As a result of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI endorsed and officially sanctioned the use
of the Lectionary for Mass. This book contains perhaps the most far reaching organization of Biblical readings
for Mass that the Catholic Church has ever had. A very significant outgrowth of the adoption of this Lectionary
for our Church, has been its adoption (more or less) by a number of other Christian Churches. In 1978 the North
American Consultation on Common Texts, a group comprised of members of various churches, set to work on
determining a common set of scripture readings for Sundays that Christians Churches could adopt. The resulting
Common Lectionary was published in 1982 and ten years later a revised set of readings was published as The Revised Common Lectionary. These lectionaries are based on the Roman Catholic Lectionary and the discussions
that led to the publication of these lectionaries had Roman Catholics as participants in the process. So, yes, on
many Sunday mornings, the liturgies celebrated by members of neighboring Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian and Disciples of Christ Churches, all listen to the same passages from the scriptures.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
Starting on September 5th, the First
Friday in September, Blessed Sacrament Exposition will take place after the 7:30am
Mass in the Church. At 8:50am, the Blessed
Sacrament will be taken to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel where it will remain until the
closing at 11:00am.. This change is being
made due to having a 9:00am Friday school Mass.

Nativity Parish is sponsoring a Just Faith program, “Crossing
Borders” this fall. You are invited to join a group to discuss,
pray, read, and reflect on immigration issues.
The sessions will be held this fall on the following Thursdays
at 10:00 AM: September 4, 18; October 2, 16; November 6,
20; and December 4, 18. Place is TBD.
“The Bible reminds us that the debates surrounding immigration are first of all about human beings who are made in the
image and likeness of God. Policy debates, statistics, spreadsheets, and economic outcomes have their place in the debate,
but without considering the human costs surrounding migration, we have an impoverished sense of the core issues at
stake.”
The Crossing Borders module from Just Faith Ministries
provides participants a chance to find common ground and to
discover more about themselves, their values, our God and
the millions of people who are on the move in every part of
the world. It is an introductory study consisting of eight, 2 ½
hours sessions. Topics include: History of Migration, The
Bible and Migration, Root Causes of Migration, Migration
and Catholic Social Teaching, The Human Face of the
Migrant, and Theology of Migration.
The Shepherd’s Center Fairfax-Burke sponsors
three Dementia Care Givers Support Groups at Lord of
Life Lutheran Church, 5114 Twinbrook Road, Fairfax. The
groups meet on the 2nd Tuesday at Noon - 1:30 pm, and 3rd
Wednesday at 7 - 8:30 pm. The groups are for those caring
for someone with dementia or for those interested in learning
more about providing care giving to a person with a disorder
that affects memory and cognition and may impact behavior
and physical abilities. Before attending, please contact the

English Classes Available in Manassas

Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) journey of
faith, starting Monday, September 8, 2014, at 7 pm, in
the Parish Hall. RCIA forms new disciples, as adults
prepare to enter the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil,
Saturday, April 4, 2015, with reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion.
This faith journey deepens one’s personal relationship
with Jesus by encountering him through passionate
teaching, personal witness, prayer and Eucharistic adoration, lively discussion and spiritual events. RCIA is
open to those who have not been baptized, Christians
baptized in another faith and baptized Catholics who
have not received catechesis for the other sacraments of

Older Adults Shape Up Mentally and Physically with
the Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax-Burke: Join the Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax-Burke (SCFB) for its Fall session
ofAdventures in Learning. This program is open to all
adults age 50 or better. Registrants bring a bag lunch and
stay for a full day of classes/activities and socializing, or
pick and choose the classes that interest them the most. The
classes run Mondays, September 29 through November
3, 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Lord of Life Lutheran Church,
5114 Twinbrook Rd., Fairfax; cost $30.00. Beginning August 30th, registration form and class schedule will

Next, our first try out in a middle school aged children: EXTREME VBS! With 13 teens in the afternoon. They traveled through the Scriptures to learn what the bible is and what amaz‐

Los hechos del Evangelio no han sido escritos sólo para ser contados, sino también para ser revividos. A quien les escucha
se le invita cada vez a entrar dentro de la página del Evangelio, a convertirse de espectador en actor, a ser parte en causa. La
Iglesia primitiva nos da el ejemplo. La manera en que se cuenta el episodio de la tempestad calmada muestra que la comunidad cristiana lo aplicó a su propia situación. En aquella tarde, cuando había despedido a la multitud, Jesús había subido solo
al monte para rezar; ahora, en el momento en el que Mateo escribe su Evangelio, Jesús se ha despedido de sus discípulos y
ha ascendido al cielo, donde vive rezando e "intercediendo" por los suyos. En aquella tarde echó mar adentro la barca; ahora
ha echado a la Iglesia en el gran mar del mundo. Entonces se había levantado un fuerte viento contrario; ahora la Iglesia
vive sus primeras experiencias de persecución.
En esta nueva situación, ¿qué les decía a los cristianos el recuerdo de aquella noche? Que Jesús no estaba lejos ni ausente,
que siempre se podía contar con él. Que también ahora daba órdenes a sus discípulos para que se le acercaran "caminando
sobre las aguas", es decir, avanzando entre las corrientes de este mundo, apoyándose sólo en la fe.
Es la misma invitación que hoy nos presenta: aplicar lo sucedido a nuestra vida personal. Cuántas veces nuestra vida se
parece a esa barca "zarandeada por las olas a causa del viento contrario". La barca zarandeada puede ser el propio matrimonio, los negocios, la salud... El viento contrario puede ser la hostilidad y la incomprensión de las personas, los reveses continuos de la vida, la dificultad para encontrar casa o trabajo. Quizá al inicio hemos afrontado con valentía las dificultades,
decididos a no perder la fe, a confiar en Dios. Durante un tiempo nosotros también hemos caminado sobre las aguas, es
decir, confiando únicamente en la ayuda de Dios. Pero después, al ver que nuestra prueba era cada vez más larga y dura,
hemos pensado que no podíamos más, que nos hundíamos. Hemos perdido la valentía.
Este es el momento de acoger y experimentar como si se nos hubieran dirigido personalmente a nosotros las palabras que
Jesús dirigió en esta circunstancia a los apóstoles: "¡Ánimo!, que soy yo; no temáis". Es famosa la frase con la que el sacerdote Abundio, en Los novios (I promessi sposi), justifica su miedo y cobardía: "Quien no tiene valentía no se la puede dar".
Tenemos que desterrar precisamente esta convicción. ¡Quien no tiene valentía se la puede dar! ¿Cómo? Con la fe en Dios,
con la oración, basándose en la promesa de Cristo.
Alguno dirá que esta valentía, basada en la fe en Dios y en la oración, es un pretexto, una huida de las propias posibilidades
y responsabilidades. Una manera de descargar en Dios los propios deberes. Es la tesis de fondo de la obra de teatro de Bertolt Brecht, ambientada en Alemania en tiempos de la guerra de los Treinta Años, que tiene como protagonista a una mujer
del pueblo llamada, por su capacidad de decisión y valor, "Madre Coraje". En plena noche, las tropas imperiales, tras haber
matado a los guardias, avanzan contra la ciudad protestante de Halle para quemarla. En los alrededores de la ciudad, una
familia de campesinos, que acoge a la Madre Coraje con la hija muda, Kattrin, sabe que lo único que puede hacer para salvar a la ciudad de la ruina es rezar. Pero Kattrin, en lugar de ponerse a rezar, sube al techo de la casa, y se pone a tocar
desesperadamente el tambor hasta que ve que los habitantes se han despertado y están de pie. Es asesinada por los soldados,
pero la ciudad se salva.
Con esta crítica, que es la clásica crítica del marxismo, se ataca a quien pretende quedarse con los brazos cruzados, en espera de que Dios lo haga todo. Pero esto no tiene nada que ver con la verdadera fe y la verdadera oración, que es lo contrario de la resignación pasiva. Jesús dejó que los apóstoles remaran contra el viento durante toda la noche y que utilizaran
todos su recursos antes de intervenir personalmente.

Evangelio: Mat 14,22-33- ¡Señor, sálvame!
El párrafo evangélico relata un acontecimiento enternecedor por una
parte, pero además lleno de enseñanzas para quienes
creemos en Cristo como
el Maestro y el Redentor. En primer lugar le vemos recogiéndose, a solas, para
orar, mientras los apóstoles van a su trabajo habitual, la
pesca.
Las olas del lago de Genesaret dificultan la tarea y hacen peligrar la barca,
por lo que Jesús sale en su ayuda. Pero antes quiere enseñarles que deben tener
más fe en El, y confiar en su poder para vivir tranquilos.

Gracias, Señor, por el ejemplo que nos das con tu
espíritu de oración.
Yo también necesito tratarte para que nunca me falle la
fe y la confianza en tu persona, y tampoco se me debilite
la caridad para con el prójimo.
Te prometo, una vez más, seguir dedicando todos los días
unos minutos a hacer oración, a tratarte, a contarte “mis
cosas”: preocupaciones y alegrías, proyectos y fracasos,
trabajo y apostolado.
Ayúdame a no faltar a esta cita cada día, para que mantenga habitualmente el espíritu contemplativo en todos
los momentos del día, y así pueda convertir el trabajo y
las diversiones, la vida de familia y las relaciones sociales en oración que a Ti te alabe y a mí me santifique.
Además me enseñas, Señor, a mantener siempre la fe en
tu persona y a confiar en tu ayuda todopoderosa. ¡Cuanta
paz, alegría y seguridad, me dan tus palabras: “Animo,
soy Yo, no tengáis miedo”!
Quiero grabarlas en mi mente y en mi corazón,
para que cuando vengan las tormentas y dificultades de la
vida, sean el faro que me ilumine para seguirte, y la
medicina que me reanime para no abandonarme en la
desesperación o la tibieza, en el desánimo o en la indiferencia.
También surgen olas encrespadas y devastadoras dentro
de la Iglesia, y contra Ella, en algunas ambientes sociales. Me pongo, Señor, en tus manos con humildad y confianza para implorar la fe y el sentido sobrenatural, la
comprensión y el perdón, el coraje y la perseverancia en
el bien, de todos los cristianos, para enfrentarnos a esos
problemas eclesiales con santidad y generosidad
apostólica. Que nunca me falte la fe auténtica y jamás
dude de tus palabras. Que cada día pueda decirte con optimismo y esperanza: ¡Señor, sálvame!.

Aprende Tu Fe
Los tres deseos

Estaba paseando por una desierta playa,
cuando en mi ensimismamiento tropecé con lo
que parecía ser una antigua lámpara de aceite.
Entonces, recordando el cuento de "Las mil y
una y noches", procedí a frotarla, a ver si de ella salía un
genio de esos que te conceden tres deseos.
Efectivamente, tras unos minutos de abrillantado,
salió una especie de humo blanco que, poco a poco, adoptó la
imagen de un genio, el cual no tardo en conminarme para que
le pidiese tres deseos.
Mi primer deseo consistió en pedirle no volver a ver
sufrir a nadie más en el Mundo. Y el genio me dejó ciego.
Un tanto molesto y receloso, le pedí no volver a oír
nunca más los lamentos y quejidos de todos aquellos, especialmente niños, que sufren hambre y sed de pan y justicia. Y
el genio me volvió sordo.
Finalmente, le pedí mi último deseo: Comprender el
porqué del dolor en el Mundo.
Entonces una especie de nube me envolvió, y arrastrándome como un torbellino me depositó en lo alto de un
monte, en donde había un hombre crucificado que con compasión me miraba a los ojos.
En ese momento me di cuenta que había recuperado
el sentido de la vista y el oído, Pero no oía nada; tan solo el
viento. Mientras, mi vista recién recuperada, permanecía cautiva por la compasiva mirada del Crucificado.
¡Compasión! ¡Aquel que tanto dolor estaba sufriendo, me miraba a mí con compasión!
No entendía nada, pero tampoco ya lo necesitaba,
porque - en ese momento - una sensación de paz infinita invadió todo mi ser, haciéndome sentir más vivo que nunca.
Fue como un despertar; como el salir de un mal sueño; de una
triste película en blanco y negro; de un drama del que yo era
actor y espectador al mismo tiempo.
Ahora he vuelto a desempeñar mi papel; el rol que
me ha tocado interpretar en esta tragicomedia que es la vida;
triste film en blanco y negro. Pero ya no es como antes; todo
ha cambiado. Porque ahora, cuando el dolor ajeno o propio se
aferra a mi garganta, ya no intento comprender el por qué;
simplemente cierro los ojos y busco su mirada... la mirada de
aquel Crucificado que mirándome a los ojos pudo dar paz a
mi alma.

Hoy es jueves, Señor, y vengo con el alma
en sombras, sombras que se llegan a convertir en oscuridad si nos falta la virtud de
la Esperanza....
Cuando eso sucede hay noches en las que parece que
el tiempo se ha detenido y jamás veremos el amanecer... en
ellas oímos el palpitar de nuestro corazón y cada latido nos
duele....
Noches de negrura espiritual en las que todo parece
agrandarse, nuestra pena, nuestra angustia y nuestro malestar.
Nos pesa la vida y en el silencio de esa noches nos parece que
no hay pena como nuestra pena.
Pero...si hay un poco de esperanza en nuestro
corazón, estamos salvados.
Sabemos de casos que esa gran "desesperanza" ha
llegado a tal límite, a tal profundidad que no se ha encontrado
otra solución que el buscar la "puerta falsa". Es el escape, el
terminar con algo que pesa demasiado y el sentirse sumergido
en las tinieblas de una noche "sin mañana"... sin esperanza.
¡Eso fue lo que les faltó a esas vidas: LA ESPERANZA.
La Esperanza es un mañana mejor, la Esperanza es la
luz que puede romper las negras sombras cuando parece que
todo está perdido.
Sin Esperanza no se puede vivir.
Cuando hay Esperanza a pesar de la desilusión y del
dolor, siempre habrá otro camino que no sea el de la desesperación y el total aniquilamiento del verdadero yo.
Es cierto que hay situaciones en la vida que son como
la más oscura de las noches, noches en que las horas parecen
no pasar... pero cuando hay fe, cuando sabemos que tenemos
un Dios que sabe de nuestro sufrimiento, cuando nos sabemos
amados por El, a pesar de que nuestro sentimiento de soledad
sea inmenso, si nos dejamos arropar y abandonar en sus brazos y en los de nuestra Madre María Santísima, la Esperanza,
de saber que Dios nos ama, llegará con su luz que sabe consolar.
Quien se siente amado no puede caer en la desesperación y Dios nos ama.
La ESPERANZA, es una virtud que tenemos que cultivar como la flor más delicada y valiosa. Tres son las virtudes teologales: Fe, Esperanza y Caridad, cuyo objeto directo es Dios Sin ellas es muy difícil caminar por la vida y no
podemos olvidar que la Esperanza siempre será la luz en
nuestras noches cuando las penas y las dificultades las hagan
muy oscuras.

Refugios, los consuelos que buscamos

Ante las dificultades, mientras llega el
cansancio de la vida, cuando aumentan
los dolores del cuerpo o del alma, buscamos refugios de paz, de alegría, tal
vez de olvido. Los refugios pueden ser
variados. Hay quienes simplemente buscan su refugio en el
sueño, como una especie de bálsamo para olvidar las penas
y las angustias de cada día. Otros se refugian en un cuarto
de su casa, o entre libros, o en el bar donde encontrar amigos y ambientes diferentes. Otros anhelan ese refugio en el
trabajo, o en el coche, o en la televisión, o en la computadora, o en la música. Algunos, por desgracia, se crean un
mundo artificial de sensaciones con la droga o con el alcohol, para consolar (falsamente) penas y dolores del alma.
Muchos de los refugios son simplemente un engaño, como un espejismo que enciende ilusiones pasajeras
en el corazón, para luego dejarnos indefensos y cansados
frente a los problemas que ahí siguen, con su peso de
amenazas y con su martilleo obsesivo. Existen, sin embargo,
otro tipo de refugios que pueden ser sanos, que restablecen
las fuerzas del alma para reemprender la lucha. Un rato de
deporte, un diálogo con un amigo sincero, un libro bueno,
devuelven serenidad al alma, abren horizontes de esperanza,
nos preparan para volver con más bríos al combate de cada
día. Pero en muchas ocasiones esos refugios también son
insuficientes.
Por eso hace falta reconocer que sólo existe un refugio realmente bueno para cada corazón humano.
Es el que se alcanza desde el encuentro sincero con Dios.
Porque Dios da sentido a la vida, nos ha creado, nos tiende
la mano como Salvador, nos espera cada día y tras la hora
definitiva de la muerte. A Dios nos acercamos en esos momentos de oración sincera, cuando le abrimos el alma,
cuando le pedimos ayuda, cuando nos ponemos llenos de
confianza entre sus manos. A Dios lo tocamos cuando podemos recibir los sacramentos, especialmente el gran regalo
de la misericordia (la confesión) y el inmenso abrazo que es
posible en cada Eucaristía. A Dios lo escuchamos con el
espíritu abierto cuando leemos su Palabra, cuando creamos
en nuestro interior espacios de silencio que nos permiten
escuchar sus susurros cotidianos.
Es Dios el verdadero refugio que anhelamos.
Porque sólo Dios conoce plenamente lo que hay en cada
corazón humano. Porque sólo Él puede ofrecer consuelos
verdaderos y palabras de ternura que curan y que lanzan a
vivir desde una fe intensa, una esperanza alegre y un amor
hecho servicio a quienes recorren a nuestro lado el mismo
camino del existir terreno.
