Saint Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two From the Pastor “When will the new moon be over,” you ask, “that we may sell our grain, and the sabbath, that we may display the wheat? We will diminish the ephah, add to the shekel, and fix our scales for cheating! We will buy the lowly for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!” The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done! – Amos 8: 5-7 As a priest who comes from a large family, one thing I’ve learned is that a sense of humor is a good thing. It’s a great thing actually. I’ve found the best way to keep oneself sane is to be able to laugh at the goings on around us. That’s one of the reasons why I like to be jocular with people, particularly at and after the Mass. What a lot of people may not realize is that the priest can see everything that goes on inside the church during Mass. Yes, we know when you come in and when you leave. We know where you sit and know when you’re not there or go to a different Mass than your usual. We see you looking at the fans during the homily or checking your email. And the list goes on. So sometimes after the Mass, rather than scold, I might say to someone who came in late, in a humorous way, “Well, I’m glad you could join us today!” Or to the one mesmerized by the grandness of the new fans in church instead of the words of Jesus, “Majestic fans aren’t they? If we turn them all the way up I’m sure we could get the church to fly off the ground!” And so on. The passage quoted above comes from the first reading of today’s Mass and the prophet Amos is reminding the people who are observing the feasts of the Lord to be attentive to these feasts and to amend their lives. The big difference is that he’s not doing it with any humor. “Oh”, they complain, “When will the priest stop talking!? When will the Sabbath be over so that I can get back to making money!? I’ve got stuff, dishonest stuff, I could be doing!?” Well, Amos reminds us that the Lord sees all, everywhere, all the time. Jesus too picks up a related refrain, “No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon.” There can be no competition in our lives between our duty to God and our pursuit of material blessings, or any other natural good for that matter. You see, we will end up loving the things we pursue most, no matter what it is. Disaster happens when we begin to fall in love with things or people and our love for them takes the place of the love we ought to have for God. It is then we begin to despise the things of God and see them as barriers or limitations to our own personal happiness and freedom. “Why do I have to go Mass? I’m gonna miss the Chargers game!” “Oh man, there’s a sale at the Outlets today and if I don’t go early I’ll miss the good stuff. I can miss Mass just this once.” And the list goes on. So in the end there are two things to keep in mind. First, God knows us better than we know ourselves. There is no bargaining with him, no hiding from him. He knows us and he wants us totally and completely. Second, let us redouble our efforts to increase our love for God and decrease our love or infatuation with material things. We do this by fasting from even lawful things and by studying and praying over eternal things.
