Attendance: Attendance in an online course means that you are up-to-date with the syllabus at the suggested
pace, and that you are participating with your class partner on current material and ¡A conversar! activities. Your
instructor and your classmates depend on you to be "present" consistently to take part in class activities designed for
the participation of all students. It is not possible to use friends for partners in this course. You must connect with a
classmate for conversation activities.

You should turn in all homework by the due date on the syllabus. There is a "final" due date listed on the Moodle
submission site. This date is not negotiable.
Emails and correspondence during semester: NCSU is a professional environment and it is expected that you will
conduct all interaction with the instructor and members of your class in a professional and appropriate way. Be advised
that the instructor will not respond to any emails that begin in an inappropriate manner, including salutations such as
"Hey."
Elluminate: This is how we will communicate "virtually" during the semester. Bookmark THE FOLLOWING LINK:
Introduction Session: Meet the instructor and introduce yourself. See syllabus for dates and times during
first few days of class. REQUIRED! Free pop quiz grade to students who meet with instructor on Elluminate during first
three days of class.

Preparation and Participation: Homework is assigned on a daily basis and certain exercises are
turned in regularily through Moodle. Preparation and practice are essential for success in learning a foreign language.
Your preparation, participation and homework submission grade (25% of your course grade) will take into account your
practise with partner, your interaction with your instructor, and your timely and thorough completion of all assignments.
You should complete all of the exercises on the pages suggested on the syllabus in the category [ eBook/Web iLrn]. You
will then copy and turn in select exercises to Moodle, as indicted on the syllabus below. These exercises are usually the
culmination of several different exercises that should all be completed in the order that they appear so that you learn
the grammar point or cultural point thoroughly. If the Moodle assignments are turned in on time, according to the dates
on the calendar below, then you will be given one additional opportunity to make corrections, if necessary, in order to
achieve the highest score possible. If you turn in the exercises after the due date on the syllabus calendar but before
the final deadline (deadline noted on Moodle as final due date), then you will receive credit but will not be able to revise
answers. If you miss the final deadline listed on Moodle, then you will receive a zero. No late homework accepted
beyond deadline listed on Moodle. No exceptions. All homework answers will be released immediately after chapter
deadline.
ACCENT MARKS : Accent Marks and Spanish Punctuation: All homework must be written with proper accents
marks and Spanish punctuation without exception. Go to this link to learn how to produce accent marks, etc., and/or to
modify your key board to the US International font.
Oral Assessment : Each student will have one in-person conversation with the instructor and complete one
presentation with the instructor (and perhaps several other students) during the semester. Dates for oral presentations
are on the syllabus and guidelines follow: Conversations : Each student must meet with the professor in a graded
conversation about a chosen exercise. The conversation should focus on a recent topic covered in one of the Rumbos
chapters, using appropriate grammar and vocabulary. Presentations : Each student will complete one presentation
(show and tell) about a topic covered in a recent chapter of Rumbos, but not the same topic as your conversational
presentation. Presentation should last approx. 2-3 mins., and should include appropriate vocabulary and grammar
reflecting chapter chosen. The grading rubric is posted at http://fll.chass.ncsu.edu/undergraduate/rubrics.pdf (Only the
rubrics on this page that apply to FLS202. Ignore other materials that are more general in nature and are for other FLS
courses.)

SUMMER SESSION II: BOTH ORAL ASSESSMENTS WILL TAKE PLACE WEEK OF
JULY 23RD. APPTS. WILL BE SET CLOSER TO DATE. CAMPUS STUDENTS
(outside of 50-mile radius of Raleigh) WILL PRESENT IN WITHERS 300,
DISTANCE STUDENTS WILL PRESENT VIA ELLUMINATE WITH VIDEO CAPACITY.
Tests: This course has 3 tests, and 2 compositions (a personal letter and a business letter) that will count as test
grades. Guidelines will be given for the composition and students will receive a grading rubric in advance. All tests must
be taken at the DELTA TESTING CENTER or with a preapproved proctor. DELTA TESTING CENTER NOW ONLY OFFERS
DROP-IN APPTS. BE SURE TO CHECK DELTA TESTING CENTER HOURS BEFORE GOING. NO TEST WILL BE GIVEN IF
NOT ENOUGH TIME REMAINS. GO EARLY. DON'T WAIT UNTIL LAST MINUTE. NO MAKE-UP TESTS WILL BE
ALLOWED. No outside materials may be used during tests or composition assignments. This includes the use of online
translators to produce any materials for tests or compositions, and the use of cut/paste techniques during exams or
compositions, or for homework. Assume that this course is run exactly like a traditional campus course with respect to
all test taking and compositions, and homework. If there is a significant discrepancy between chapter test results and
final exam results, you may be asked to retake the chapter exams in the instructor's office before a final grade is
posted. Any suspected inappropriate behavior will be questioned and will be immediately reported to the Office of
Student Conduct. No exceptions.
Local Testing: (students in the Raleigh area) ALL TESTING IS DONE IN THE DELTA TESTING CENTERS AND
IS DROP-IN ONLY. CHECK WEBSITE FOR DAILY HOURS AND AVAILABILITY. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY
TO PLAN AHEAD. NO MAKE UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN. NO EXCEPTIONS. http://distance.ncsu.edu/testingservices/local-testing.php
Remote Testing: Use the following link to schedule testing outside the Raleigh area:
http://distance.ncsu.edu/testing-services/remote-testing.php Proctors must be set up by June 29th, 2012, to insure that
you will receive first exam on time.
Make-up Work: You are expected to complete assignments and take tests on time. Use the dates on the
syllabus to guide your submissions. If you submit work according to syllabus dates, then you will be allowed to revise
homework once for a higher score before chapter exam. If you miss the syllabus due date, then your homework will be
graded once with no revision possible. All assignments for each chapter have a final due date 24 hours before exam
window opens. No work will be accepted after that time, NO EXCEPTIONS. In the event of a serious emergency you
must contact the professor before the date of a test or assignment. Send an email or leave a voice message as soon as
possible. No chapter tests nor compositions may be taken outside of usual 2-day window allowed for assessments
through the DELTA TESTING SERVICE. No Exceptions.
Student Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, students will be
able to...
produce sentence-level oral discourse in Spanish and begin to connect sentences together.
compose short written products of up to one full page.
demonstrate listening and reading comprehension of formal and informal Spanish in familiar contexts.
interpret main ideas and some supporting details contained in Spanish language audio, video and reading passages
of up to several minutes or several pages in length.
communicate about literary, cultural and other academic topics in Spanish with accuracy reflective of at least the
Intermediate level on the Oral Proficiency Scale of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages
(ACTFL http://www.actfl.org).

More detailed learning objectives can be found at http://fll.chass.ncsu.edu/spanish/fls202/objectives.php
Academic Integrity: The Foreign Language Department takes the university policy on academic integrity
very seriously and we expect that you do as well. You will be expected to sign a pledge on each test and all
assignments. Guidelines will be provided for assignments. Please ask if you have any questions about the guidelines or
the policy. If there is a significant difference between chapter test results and final exam results, you may be asked to
retake the chapter exams in the instructor's office before a final grade is posted. No outside materials may be used
