Muñoz Musings…
Ahoy Pirates! Punxsutawney Phil says we need to get ready for an early spring. I was
hoping that we might be enjoying six more weeks of winter but no such luck. Afterall, the
skiing has been wonderful this year so why not keep it going?!? We are flying though this school year
and will soon be celebrating our eighth graders as they transition into high school. It is a bittersweet
time to see our students grow into the next phase of their lives but sad to think that we won’t be seeing them in the hallways and classrooms next year.
According to a recent CNN article by Kelly Wallace, some parents may be excited about the high
school transition due to the stressors involved with being the parent of a middle school child. The article, “Middle
School: The new high school for moms,” provides some answers that parents may be looking for when it comes to
understanding their middle school child. It’s also a great resource to get some new ideas on how to best communicate, stay engaged with what is going on, and also how to best support your child when needed. The article also suggests that parents should not just wait for the middle school years to pass by, but to jump in, get involved, and really
develop a relationship with their child that will last through the teen years and beyond. It is a quick read and gives attention to the saying “It takes a village to raise a preteen.”

As we move through third quarter, please continue to stay engaged with your child’s education by looking at their
planner. All students at Louisville Middle School are required to use the student planner. The purpose of the planner is
to accomplish the following:

Muñoz Musings continued...
 To increase and facilitate communication between home and school
 Assist students in getting organized and with planning ahead
 Communication between teachers and students
 Identifies progress and accomplishments
 Assists students with study skills
 Identifies important events and dates
 Reinforces the LMS philosophy, vision and mission
 Recognition of positive experiences and actions at LMS
Communication of expectations, rules, procedures
Please consider joining us this month during conference time on February 11th, 16, or 18th from 4:30-7:30. ParentTeacher Conference nights are designed to help support you and our students if you have any questions, concerns, or
just want to learn something new about your child.
I also wanted to take a moment to thank our parents for using the correct pickup and drop off areas around Louisville
Middle School. Although it may be convenient to use our staff/visitor parking lot or the bus loop in front of LMS, these
areas pose safety risks for students, staff, and parents. In fact, just this morning, Mrs. Vidulich was nearly swiped by a
in-coming SUV. Thank goodness, she is a tough Pirate and will be ok. This has happened on a few other occasions to
students so please avoid these areas altogether. Please continue to use Lafayette Street to drop off and pick up students each day and students should use the crosswalk to get across Main Street before and after school.
Enjoy your weekend!

Dear Parents,
You are cordially invited to participate in a conversation with the team from the
Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) who will
be in BVSD on Tuesday, February 9th, 2016 at 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM in the Arapahoe Campus Cafeteria (6600 Arapahoe Road, Boulder CO).
As part of the implementation of BVSD's strategic plan, The Success Effect, BVSD has invited the CASEL team (who are the leaders in promotion of,
development of, and research on social and emotional learning (SEL) in
schools) to provide BVSD with a needs assessment that will focus on the district’s readiness to implement social-emotional learning curricula in our
schools.
CASEL's project proposal to BVSD states:
“For years, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning
(CASEL) has emphasized the significant role of districts in the sustainability of
school change and improvement. As research evidence continues to surface
about social and emotional learning (SEL) as a promising approach to enhancing academic learning, many district leaders are adopting an SEL focus as part
of their plans to improve student outcomes.
The primary goal of CASEL’s systemic SEL Needs Assessment is to provide
district leaders with a comprehensive assessment of their district’s current SEL
resources, needs, and capacity to plan and implement SEL throughout the
district. The process can serve as an important source of objective information
and analysis that will ideally inform leaders’ decision-making about how best to
move forward with SEL in their district."
CASEL's website: http://www.casel.org/
On February 9 starting at 4:30 PM, parents and community members will have
an opportunity to meet with the CASEL team, learn more about socialemotional learning, and have time to ask questions about CASEL's work.
Space is limited to the first 100 parents! Please RSVP:

PARCC/CMAS Info
On January 19, you received an email message from the Boulder
Valley School District telling you about upcoming state testing. I
encourage you to review this information and, if you have any
questions, please ask me.
If your student will be testing this spring, no action is needed at this
time. If you decide that your student will not be taking one or more
state tests, please click on the survey link included in the January
19 email message--or send an email message to [email protected] requesting that your link be re-sent. Knowing about
your student’s testing status by Tuesday, February 9 will assist us
in providing a standardized testing environment for students who
are testing and appropriate learning activities for students who
attend school during scheduled testing times but are not taking
state tests.
Estimadas familias,
In this month of flowers and candy and love, we will be asking families to “show your love”
for LMS by participating in our One and Only Fundraiser: The Pirate Pride Challenge! Stop by
the greeter table in the mornings to drop off your check and get your name up on a heart
around the school! So if you haven’t donated, or want to just give a few more dollars this
would be a great time to do it!
We will also have a table available at Conferences for those of you who are available after
school hours .
Thank you for your continual support of your students and teachers!

BVSD Parent Snapshot Surveys coming in February (online) and March (mailed)
BVSD surveys students, parents and staff each year in order to gather information that can be used
to guide efforts to improve schools. The survey of parents is called the “Parent Snapshot Survey”
and parents will be receiving it in the next few weeks. We hope all parents and guardians will take a
moment to complete and return this survey. The more parents who participate, the more accurately
the survey data will reflect parents’ perceptions and opinions. The survey results are reviewed by
school staff to determine what programs and processes are working and which ones need improvement. Consequently, the survey results can have a significant impact on school operations.
The Parent Snapshot Survey will be administered online for all parents who have provided an email
address to their student’s school and who receive all communication in English. This supports a
greener and more cost effective process by reducing the amount of paper used, mailing cost, and
data entry required. We also hope this will increase the parent participation rate. Online surveys will
be sent by email the week of February 2 to only one email address per household. If you don’t see
an invitation in your “inbox,” please check other email addresses you have given the school.
If there is not an email address associated with your household or if your primary language is Spanish, you will receive a survey via U.S. postal service consistent with last year. Paper surveys will be
mailed at the beginning of March.
Teens can apply for summer jobs with Boulder County Youth Corps
Boulder County residents ages 14-17 can now apply for summer jobs with the Youth Corps. Girls especially are encouraged to apply. Applications are available online and at counseling offices in schools. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, March 25.
The Youth Corps offers one of the best first job opportunities available in Boulder County. 160 teenagers will be hired to
work 30 hours a week, Monday through Thursday, from June 13 to August 3 on a variety of community service projects.
Projects will include such activities as trail construction and maintenance, historic preservation, forest thinning, construction and repair of fencing, landscaping and removal of Russian olive trees and noxious weeds.
Corpsmembers will earn a starting hourly wage of $8.31, with the possibility of earning a $100 bonus at the end of the
program based on merit and strong attendance.
“My first year in the Youth Corps changed my life and was where I met some of my best friends,” one of last summer’s
Corpsmembers said of the experience.
For more information or to apply online, visit www.BoulderCounty.org/YouthCorps.

Boulder County Youth Corps
