Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time
February 15, 2015
From Your Pastor
Rev. Paul C. Burak
This Wednesday we will gather together and receive ashes. This strong and
vibrant symbol gives us an awareness of a sobering truth: we will not live forever
on this earth.
All that we have and all that we accomplish will turn to ashes. There is one part
of us that will never die, and that is our soul. At the moment we are conceived
God joins to the love of mother and father and gives a soul to this new child. And
that child is you.
Whether we want to admit it or not, we are all involved in a spiritual battle with
the evil one. The devil wants our soul, and it is up to us to keep the evil one far
away from our family and our Church.
This is why we have a Season of Lent each year, that we might grow in spiritual
power and profess that the victory of Jesus Christ has been won. The question is
how do we grow in spiritual power so that we can say no to the temptations and
the attacks of the evil one.
There are three main disciplines in this Lenten Season: prayer and fasting and
almsgiving.
Spend more time in prayer than you normally do the rest of the year. Fast from
food, fast from drink, fast from gossip, fast from negative thinking – but fast.
Give alms to the poor – not extra money that you will not miss. Give alms in a
stewardship way: give up something you really like and use that money for the
poor. Give till it hurts in your bank account.
This is the call of the discipline of Lent. Let us make a good beginning and be
faithful to Easter!
—Fr. Paul

St. Michael Parish:
Sacrament of Christ’s Presence
Today’s reading from the book of Leviticus deals with
the laws governing the treatment of lepers. Leprosy was a
disease that was little understood and still carries the stigma
of being mysterious and highly contagious. It symbolized
the presence of evil and the effects of sin. When Jesus
showed affection for the leper in today’s gospel, and
reached out to touch him, Jesus was doing the unspeakable.
Jesus asked the man to keep it quiet. However, when the
man was cured, he could not contain himself. Instead, he
told the world! What could be more convincing of the
power of Jesus over evil than to have a known “unclean”
leper suddenly come back from Jesus without a spot on
him?
Just think of the fear and isolation that the return of measles has caused in our country. And… there are many other
“leprosies” …. illnesses and sins that keep people apart
from the community. The Christ-like compassion of those
who work with present-day “lepers” or “outcasts” reminds
us that Jesus’ power over evil can still be seen when we
reach out and touch those lives. Ash Wednesday begins on
Wednesday, and we will be entering the season of Lent.
Our theme this Lent will be...St. Michael Parish: Sacrament
of Healing. How can our parish be a “Sacrament?” More
on this later….
 In what way have you been an imitator of Christ?
 How might the way Jesus treated the leper guide us in
the way we treat outcasts?
 The leper trusted in the power of Jesus. In what ways
have you trusted in the power of Jesus to heal you, to make
life better for you?
 In what ways have you shared the joy of being touched
by the healing power of Jesus?

LENTEN REGULATIONS
1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the
Fridays of Lent.
2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of
age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday.
3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only
one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other
meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength,
may be taken according to each one’s needs, but
together they should not equal another full meal.
Eating between meals is not permitted on these
two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit
juices are allowed. When health or ability to
work would be seriously affected, the law does
not oblige.
4. To disregard completely the law of fast and
abstinence is seriously sinful.

Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged
to develop and follow a program of voluntary selfdenial (in addition to following the Lenten
regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of
works of charity and mercy.

Lenten Crosses
Sick List
Names for the bulletin sick list need to be called
into the Parish Office by Monday, at Noon in
order to be included in the following Sunday’s
Bulletin.
During the season of Lent we are once again
reminded of our need to commit ourselves to prayer,
fasting and almsgiving. These are the practices
which have always been a part of our Lenten
experience, and these are the practices which
prompt us to consider personal change and renewal
in our lives.
The Social Concerns Ministry will place crosses
with requests from our sharing parishes and other
local charities in the Narthex beginning on Ash
Wednesday.
You may select a cross as an
expression of your commitment to the practice of
almsgiving.
We will continue to place crosses in the Narthex
during the season of Lent. Please return your
unwrapped package, with the cross attached, at your
convenience before Palm Sunday ( March 29).
We ask that any gifts you bring be new. Please
place gift cards in the collection basket—do not
leave them in the Narthex.
Please Pray For The Sick
We continue to remember the sick, the infirm, and
all those recommended to our prayers; and
especially, the following, that they may
experience the healing and power of Christ:

Do a quick check of your priorities. Where does
God rank in that list? If He’s not first, you have
some work to do. Putting God first in everything
helps develop the attitude of “ I am grateful for the

most people gratitude leads to generosity.

“You’re still grieving?” This is a difficult question for
those who mourn the death of a loved one to hear. Grief is a
process that takes time. If you are grieving the loss of a
significant person in your life, perhaps it would be helpful for
you to come together with others who are also experiencing the
difficult pain of grief.

“Refreshments Will Be Available”
How many times have you seen that announcement in the bulletin, regarding some event or
celebration taking place at St. Michael Church?
Have you ever stopped to think how it all came together, and who was responsible for its
existence?
Recently, St. Michael hosted a three-day Parish Mission in which each night refreshments
were available. Those refreshments, cookies, cakes, brownies, Danish, were all (in most
cases) prepared by approximately thirty wonderful lady parishioners of St. Michael Church.
These ladies were asked to prepare or bring a dish of goodies to one night of the event. All
volunteered without giving it a second thought.
The organizer of this wonderful tradition is our own parishioner, Rose Kessen.
Many thanks to all the ladies who contribute their baking talents and goodies whenever
requested.
Special thanks to Rose Kessen for undertaking the planning and organizing of refreshments

penitencial, no sólo interna e individualmente, sino
permite tomar leche y jugos.

Breakfast With A Cup
Of Spirituality
Saturday, February 28
9:00—11:00 a.m.
Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart
9201 W. St. Francis Road, Frankfort
The presentation after the breakfast is entitled: “Mary’s Seven
Sorrows.” As we immerse ourselves in the Lenten season, let
us take time to reflect on Mary’s unimaginable sorrows. Mary
knew from the time Jesus was forty days old that a sword
would pierce her heart. She carried those unsettling words in
her mind and heart as Jesus grew in wisdom, age, and grace
before God and man. We will accompany Mary on her life
journey noting that in a life of much suffering, there can be
grace and peace. The donation for the morning is $15. To make
reservations email: [email protected] or
call 815.464.3886
