PUERTO DE MARCH 2016 BILBAO NEWS 72 INCREASE IN PORT RAIL TRAFFIC Intermodality, an essential piece for competitiveness The majority of the freight volume which enters and leaves from Bilbao's port installations happens through piping (51%), consistent with the significant importance of the market for hydrocarbons, LNG and other liquid products. Road transport is employed in 42% of cases as a complement for maritime transport. Port railway traffic’s figure, although much lower, is also an essential piece for the port's competitiveness because each mode of transport contributes value for efficient logistics. Hence, companies from Bilbao's port sector have looked after intermodality and rely on the rail, with the aim of providing a response to their clients' different needs. Cargo transported by rail in 2015 (1,694,904 metric tonnes) to/from the docks of Bilbao's port represen- ted 5% of the total traffic, 7% of the total traffic recorded on the commercial docks and 10% of the freight likely to use this mode of transport by type of industry/product. This volume of port railway tonnage means a 10% increase compared to 2014. Among the increased tonnage, 11.5% correspond to containerized cargo and 4% to other freight (general cargo and liquid bulks) which exceeded, in this case, 308,000 metric tonnes. In TEUs, the year closed with a figure of 122,000, equivalent to 19.5% of the total TEU volume and a 9% increase. The traffic is received or sent directly from the maritime terminals, which have their station or railway siding where the trains are prepared, thus optimising Bilbao's logistics position, preventing additional handling or haulage. Rail Port Services Long distance rail port services are carried out from/ to Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Guadalajara (Azuqueca de Henares), Seville, Murcia and Castellón. Short and medium distance services connect with Burgos, Navarre and Vitoria-Gasteiz. Shipping companies and operators have maintained and even strengthened the rail port services, which carry out close to one hundred trips weekly including arrivals and departures. The rail port traffic figures in 2015, in terms of absolute volume, point to a record year which justifies the importance that the Bilbao port community has given to following up on railway infrastructure projects which are being planned for the Bilbao Metropolitan Arterial Network (access to the High Speed Line to Bilbao and the South Railway Variant) SHORT SEA SHIPPING Brittany Ferries start a service with Poole In February, Brittany Services started a ro-ro service which connects the ports of Bilbao and Poole twice a week. MARÍTIMA DÁVILA BILBAO NORDIKMARITIME First call of the SDW Shipping with South America Strengthening positions in Denmark and the Baltic The call by the M/V Johanna, on 3 March, started the new direct monthly maritime link that SDW Shipping and Marítima Dávila Bilbao have implemented from the port of Bilbao with Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Bolivia. The service admits general cargo, ro-ro and IMO, heavy, over-sized and project cargo. The company offers its services principally intended for project cargo The service, represented by Bergé Marítima Bilbao, is covered by the "MV Pelican", 155 metres long, with capacity for around a hundred unaccompanied cars and accommodation for eight drivers. Included among the possible freight that can be carried are the goods typically transported by trailers (including frozen and refrigerated cargo) and transport vehicles (cars or buses). The ship also allows special transport and cargo on "mafis". To do so, the ship has a ramp which allows shipments of up to 60 tonnes (of weight on the ramp) and up to 5 m in height. VASCO SHIPPING Service to North Africa and the Middle East The ship leaves the port of Bilbao on Mondays at 12 p.m. and Thursdays at 8 p.m. Departures from Poole occur on Tuesdays at 12 a.m and Saturdays at 4 p.m. With the launch of this service, Brittany Ferries responds to the new demands of transport companies, while also freeing space on the ships which connect Bilbao and Portsmouth and which offer accompanied transport service. Thus, with the "MV Pelican", the company operates five weekly departures from the port of Bilbao to the United Kingdom, by adding these two weekly departures to the three (on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) which have connected with Portsmouth On 4 March, the Nordikmaritime service, carried out by the M/V Karion, celebrated its 45th call in the port of Bilbao. The company thus strengthens its position in Bilbao with the regular services it operates every 20 days with the Danish port of Esbjerg and with individual calls such as Nantes, Immingham and Bremerhaven, on its voyage toward Denmark, or later in the Baltic such as Kristiansand, Vasteras and Gdynia. Starting from the Swedish port of Uddevalla and the Netherlands' Port of Vlissingen, the two multi-purpose vessels with which they operate make their last European port of call at Bilbao before heading to Callao (Peru), and Iquique and Arica (Chile) as base ports. There is also the possibility of calling at Buenaventura (Colombia) and expanding the service through to Valparaíso (Chile) depending on cargo available. Additionally, the call at Arica facilitates access to the Bolivian market. With an estimated transit time of 24 days between Bilbao and Callao, the service has among its new aspects the possibility to operate with net prices (without BAF, CAF surcharges, etc.) and the multi-functionality which the vessels' ro-ro features offer Vasco Shipping Services has started a weekly service, as the representative of Cosco, from Bilbao to the ports of Alger (Algeria), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and Jebel Ali (United Arab Emirates). The connection is via Algeciras, from where Cosco has established weekly connections. In the case of Alger it is a feeder service from Algeciras, and in the case of Jeddah and Jebel Ali, it is the MINA service which connects the port with the Middle East and India BERGÉ MARÍTIMA PETRONOR Acquisition of a mobile crane Renovations of its maritime terminal Bergé Marítima Bilbao has reinforced its operating capacity with the acquisition of a new Liebherr 550 mobile crane, with a lifting capacity of up to 144 tonnes. The crane will be used for new heavy cargo projects and to handle all types of freight PUERTO DE BILBAO NEWS 72 Petroleos del Norte (Petronor) has invested nearly two million Euros in replacing the loading arms of the SP-3 berth of the Punta Lucero maritime terminal, in the port of Bilbao, with new arms equipped with the latest environmentally friendly technologies. TORO Y BETOLAZA BBG All roll trailers received In recent weeks, Toro y Betolaza has completed receiving a second round of 6 roll trailers out of an initial total order of 12 units. Toro y Betolaza's knowhow built up over decades in handling ro-ro cargo and its application to the field of general cargo allow the company to work with these over-sized 40' equipment with a 130-tonne payload. With these maffis, heavy goods can be received, which later facilitates the moves or manoeuvres needed to load the ship, with the subsequent savings in time and money in handling and additional means. An example of this is the recent delivery of 110-tonne Nacelles. This machinery is added to the new Liebherr LHM 400 mobile four-cable crane with a lifting capacity of 104 tonnes, which started operations in January Gas, a strategic business which is gaining strength The old arms had been operating for 40 years, from the time when Petronor started its activities in the port. The new arms, by the German manufacturer (SVT), have an emergency release couplers or ERC, which minimise the likelihood of a possible contamination. Furthermore, by having a hydraulic coupling system, connection and disconnection operations’ times have been reduced, thus decreasing laytime. The entire coupling manoeuvre to the ship's manifold (the ends of the loading and unloading lines) is done by remote control. The two 12-inch arms are for dirty products and the other two 10-inch arms are for clean products. All these have an air draft (maximum height from the ballast condition to the ship's manifold) and reach up to 15 metres, which can accommodate larger vessels Bahía de Bizkaia Gas (BBG), a major supplier of natural gas destined for domestic, commercial and industrial consumption, located in the port of Bilbao, unloaded 25 LNG vessels and loaded another four during 2015. BBG furthermore supplied 1,035 LNG road transport tankers. The cargo unloaded added up to a total of 3.4 million m3 and the loaded cargo reached 0.5 million m3 of LNG. BBG- owned in equal parts by Enagás and Ente Vasco de la Energy (the Basque Government’s Energy Agency)- regassified 15% of the liquid natural gas introduced in the Spanish gas system and with it contributed 7% of the total of natural gas consumed. On the other hand, it supplied 70% of the natural gas needs in the Basque Country. With all this, BBG has fulfilled its mission of guaranteeing the supply of this energy source to the Basque country and to strengthening the gas system. Euskadour A year ago BBG inaugurated its third liquid natural gas storage tank, with which it increased its capacity up to 450,000 cubic metres. Now this business has experienced a new impulse with the recent launch, by Enagas, of the compression station in Irún, which has required an investment of 20 million Euros. The new station has increased the transport capacity of Euskadour, the gas pipeline connecting Spain and France, by ten fold, allowing the regassified natural gas in BBG to be exported to Europe. Furthermore, it is prepared for the future business of bunkering, which is expected to receive an important impulse for this gas business Edited: UniportBilbao D.L.
