Nurture, Don't Lecture, to Promote a Love of Learning
You thought it would be fun to build a bird house for the back yard. But as
you were teaching your child how to use all the tools, you noticed that he
had lost interest.
Teaching your child is important. When he asks for it ("I sure wish I knew
how to ...."), it can be a great way to spend time together.
But in some families, kids feel like they’re always in class. When they come
home, Dad is drilling them on how to shoot free throws or how to cut the
grass the right way. Turning everything into a lesson can be a surefire way
to make kids lose interest.
Kids love to do things with their parents. Working together on a project can
be one of the best ways for parents and children to learn more about each
other. But not everything has to turn into a chance to teach kids new skills.
Sometimes, it’s just fun to putter around in the kitchen or the workshop.
So go slow. If your child is working on a project, let him do it his own way.
You might ask if there’s anything you can do to help, but let it be his
choice. If he hammers in the nail incorrectly, he’ll learn soon enough that it
doesn’t hold the wood together.

Usted pensó que sería divertido construir una casita para pájaros en el
jardín de atrás de su casa. Pero tan pronto empezó a enseñarle a su hijo a
usar las herramientas, se dio cuenta de que él ya había perdido el interés.
Enseñarle a su hijo es importante. Cuando él demuestre interés, ("Me
encantaría aprender a…."), aproveche la oportunidad de pasar tiempo con
él.
Pero en algunas familias, los niños sienten como si siempre estuvieran en
clase. Cuando llegan a casa, papá les pide que practiquen sus
lanzamientos al cesto, o les explica cómo deben cortar el césped
correctamente. Si todo se convierte en una lección, es probable que los
niños pierdan interés.
A los niños les encanta hacer cosas con sus padres. Trabajar juntos en un
proyecto es una de las mejores maneras de aprender más el uno del otro.
Pero no es necesario que todo se convierta en una oportunidad para
enseñarle a su hijo una habilidad nueva. Algunas veces, es simplemente
divertido pasar el rato en la cocina o en un taller.
Por eso, vaya despacio. Si su hijo está trabajando en un proyecto, deje que
lo haga a su manera. Podría ofrecerle ayuda, pero deje que él decida. Si
martilla un clavo de forma incorrecta, pronto aprenderá que las maderas no
se mantendrán unidas.
