Liturgical Books – Book of the Gospels
Liturgy Corner by Deborah Ferry
Previously, Liturgy Corner has discussed the Sacramentary and Lectionary for Mass. We will now discuss
the Book of the Gospels. In the early Middle Ages, copies of the Bible in its entirety were rare. Gospel
Books were produced for both private study and as "display books" for ceremonial and ornamental purposes.
In current usage, the Book of the Gospels contains all four gospels and is used by the priest or deacon to
proclaim the Gospel of the day during the Mass. However, use of the Book of the Gospels is not mandatory;
the Gospel readings are included in the Lectionary. Many parishes choose to use the Book of the Gospels,
particularly on Sundays because the Book of the Gospels may be carried in the entrance procession while the
Lectionary may not. (GIRM, 120)
The following taken from “Introduction to the Book of the Gospels:”
Formal liturgical books containing readings from Sacred Scripture have been common in the Church from
the time of Saint Gregory the Great. In our own day every effort is made to assure that the Scriptures are
bound in books which are w
" orthy, dignified, and beautiful."
This is particularly true of the Book of the Gospels which is venerated above all the books of readings by
Churches of both East and West. So clearly is the Book of the Gospels a sign of Christ present in the liturgy,
that it is revered with the same holy kiss given to the altar.
Every time the Church unites herself with Christ in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, the Body of the
Lord and the eternal Word of divine truth are received as from a twofold table, as a participation in the one
sacrifice of praise. While opening up a vast treasury of Sacred Scripture in the Liturgy of the Word, the
Church nonetheless acknowledges the preeminent place of the Gospels by according s"pecial marks of honor"
to their proclamation.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time:
“Good stewards must not argue about who is the most important. Today’s Gospel says clearly that those who
aspire to greatness must humbly serve the needs of all. Even Jesus came not to be served, but to serve.”

Sharing the Love of Reading
By: Kelly Flores
As the leaders of the SLEMS student body, the 8th grade
students have a lot of responsibilities. One of which is
sharing the love of reading with their 1st grade buddies. As
least once a month the 8th grade students will meet with
their 1st grade buddies and have formal reading time. During
this special time, the buddies take turns reading favorite
childhood stories with each other. This experience puts our
youngest and oldest readers in direct contact and helps
inspire a love of reading. Eighth grade teacher Ms. Haley
Hemm states “For me, it is a community building
experience. I already see the 1st and 8th graders talking to
each other outside of class. For my 8th graders, I hope they
develop into leaders in this process by guiding and inspiring
the 1st graders to love reading”. This unique interaction
between the student leaders and some of the youngest
learners is another way SLEMS creates a familial and
tight-knit school community, where each student feels
validated and inspired.
