CULTURAL ASSOCIATION MANZARABÍA: The tourist guide you are supposed to be holding in your hands at this very moment is the so-called “Cabeza del Buey Tourist Guide”. The guide is the result of the work carried out by some well-known local cultural association named as “Manzarabía” and it has also been designed in collaboration with the Town Council. Some time ago, the above-mentioned association became well aware of the need for working on this guide in both languages. There were two main reasons for doing so. First of all, because it was always our intention to present the charm and the cultural richness of our township to the general public´s knowledge and, in the second place, because, fortunately, it is more and more frequent to see tourists and foreigners arrive in our town, most of them longing for knowing more about us, our origins and our history. We would all like to sincerely thank the warm welcome, the help offered and the positive attitude shown by a great deal of enterprises, trading centers, sponsor houses and individuals which agreed to sponsor and advertise themselves on it in order to give a better service to all the citizens reading it. TOURISM AROUND CABEZA DEL BUEY: The historic village core is formed by the streets closer to the Town Hall and the Parish, together with the Santa Elena Hospital, the Constitution Square and the Fuente Square. The Santa Elena Hospital is one of the first foundations which the knight Commander Martín Rol carried out in this town in 1501. The hermitage building attached to the hospital structure, in 1655, was rebuilt some time later. This, which some claim to have been originally erected by Martínez Montañés, “the so-called master of wood”, was designed and constructed according to the principles of the baroque style and it exhibits an attic containing an Annunciation scene carved on it. During the Spanish Civil War, the chapel was seriouly damaged but it eventually survived the attacks since someone walled the entrance in. These days, “The Local Music Band” and “The Youth Center” occupy its facilities. The building is situated just behind the church and it may be visited any weekday. The Parish Church “Nuestra Señora de Armentera”: The current parish is said to have been probably built over the foundations of a former church, with a cemetery attached to it. Throughout centuries different improvements and extensions were undertaken. The bell tower was added to the whole structure in 1550, in 1703 “The Front of Forgiveness” was rebuilt and in 1861 the south front. The holy water stoup consists of a capital found in the Roman ruins of the neighbouring village of La Nava. To cover the chapel a crossed vault was used. The wall decoration, which in 1788 would illustrate the today called “Sacristía Eucarística”, is still maintained. Acceso libre a diario. The Command House: This house, nowadays used as accommodation for the Major´s Home building and best known as “La Casa de la Encomienda”, was already thought to be one of the oldest houses in town by the 17th century and it is said to date from the 14th century. Open access any day of the year. Inmaculate Conception Enclosed Nunnery: The monastery doors were opened in 1523. From the most magnificent past times a really beautiful Christ bust, attributed to the Mena School, is still kept. This is crowned with and ornamentally finished in thorns. The religious community inhabiting the convent lead an endless monastic life, in perpetual closure. The convent is located quite close to The Fuente Square. The Lodging (Home of the Hearing): It dates back to the 16th century. In archaeological terms we are dealing with the most interesting monument in town displaying a three-storey stonework turret, a wide wrought iron fence, a double-arch Renaissance large window and a railing balcony upstairs. Clearly on the very front of the building we can see signs and letters carved out of bull blood and red ochre whose meanings are still unknown. The Home of the Hearing, well-known as “The Lodging” is placed next to the Town Hall and it is closed to public visits. San Roque Hermitage: It is the oldest Hermitage in town, built in the 13th century. The porch supported on several pillars and the semicircular arches on the west front were added in the 18th century. The hermitage was named after the neighboring where it is located in, the neighboring of San Roque. Cristo del Humilladero Hermitage: The building called The Humilladero Hermitage was constructed in 1678 and it gave its name to the long street into which it leads. The main feature of this street lies in being the most important path through which all the Easter processional floats and ways come up to the Calvario site. San Vicente Hermitage: This building was designed as a pyramid-shaped small octagon, showing a beautiful and colourful skylight on the top. It is situated in the well-known San Vicente Square. Jesus Nazareno Hermitage: The hermitage we are about to describe has also undergone some major improvements, among which we could stand out the one undertaken in 1729 and by which someone set about the task of renovating the large front and the tower crowning it. The building displays a strapped vault supported by three central arches and two other on the walls, painted in oils. The present altarpiece dates back to the post-civil war years. On the top of the sidewalls one can appreciate some oil paintings; the former six have already been restored and enjoy a magnificent artistic value. Christ´s School / Jesús en la Oracion del Huerto Hermitage In 1969 already there existed the confraternity of Christ´s School, which there was founding the priest D. Antonio Gómez, who constructed in addition the hermitage in 1718. 18th century. It Is located on the Pedregoso mountain hills. DON DIEGO MUÑOZ-TORRERO He is considered to be the most famous and recognised favourite son of the municipality. He was already a member of the parliament for the Courts of Law of Cadiz in 1810 and according to Fernández de los Ríos, the whole writing of the 1812 Spanish Constitution could be entirely attributed to D. Diego. Just before his death, he entrusted a flag to the National Militia of Cabeza del Buey, a present which can be nowadays found in the Parliament. One of the most central streets, as well as both the town primary and secondary schools are named after him. The house where he was born in -situated in the so-called Convento Street which goes down from the Parish church and leads into the Fuente square- displays an inscription recalling its history on its front. The visitor can also see a bust paying tribute to Don Diego Muñoz Torrero in the small public garden of The Constitution. MUNICIPAL PARK: Truly regarded as the green area of the township, it is approximately 50 years old and it stretches to around 12.000 square metres. With plenty of shady and grey spots, any person strolling along the park may find benches, fountains and a wide variety of different trees and tree plants. For most of the town dwellers the park is the landmark and the space where summer nights pass and major shows are organized. THE FUENTE SQUARE: The main attraction of the town and the centre of population in downtown. One may easily find the place emblematic monument in its very core, the statue of an ox with a woman head resting on a pedestal surrounded by a circular water-spouting fountain and embellished all around with grass. Well-known for the “caputbovenses” as “La Jacinta”, it makes stand out as an artwork carried out by the sculptor José Antonio González López-Arza. Unique and extraordinary sceneries offer the tourist the possibility of choosing among a wide range of outdoor and leisure activities, such as hiking, trekking; or rural routes by means of which one could get to know and enjoy the natural and historic heritage and richness of the region. CAVE PAINTINGS: The abundance of caves, natural shelters and cave paintings spreading out in the ranging mountains of Cabeza del Buey are an accurate reflection and a clear indication that these fields were already dwelt in the Prehistoric times. From prehistoric ages some primitive and uncivilized traces can be found in Puerto Alonso, in the Estanislao hill, in the Cueva valley and in the Fuente del Peral. The last finding was discovered in the Encomienda mountain range, and it has been named as the “eagle shelter”. It is essential to stand out the paintings in the Morro de la Nava, a place set against the Pedregoso mountains, which extend as far as two kilometres south-soutwest Cabeza del Buey, lying between Puerto del Gato and Puerto de la Nava and facing the Fuente del Peral fountain. There, several cave paintings made in red color can be visited and appreciated. With good accessibility, these paintings are located in several caves and wells. ROMAN BATHS From the Roman times, on this occasion, we would like to draw your attention to the set of Roman Baths which can be tracked down in El Puerto de la Nava. These baths have their origins both in the abundance of different types of waters, some of them with medicinal properties, and in the beauty of the landscape surrounding. Both reasons made it an ideal resort for rest and bathing. It is thought that the baths were first erected in the 1st century B.C. and their reputation was as its peak in the late days of the century. Whether coins, some fragments of mosaic and a little female marble bust have been found. The Roman Baths are found in el Puerto de la Nava road which is facing the Municipal Swimming Pool, as far as three kilometres from the town. ALMORCHON CASTLE: The aforementioned castle dates back to the Muslim times although very few traces of the period are kept. The reason is that it underwent a great deal of transformations throughout the Christian period. Its importance lies in including one of the most relevant and strategic region sites, Las Grullas Strait. Not a long way from the crossing which leads into the Belén Sanctuary, next to “El Castillo” country estate, the castle looms up. For the visitor it would entail no difficulty to step up to the main tower. The Tiros Hill skirting either the castle or the sanctuary deserves special mention. Griffon vultures nesting in the so-called Peña Buitrera can be seen flying about the north side of the hill which happens to be parallel to the railways. The typically ordinary country estate is undoubtedly the most rational and profitable type of farm existing nowadays in the region since it clearly combines both the agricultural and the cattle-raising exploitation and, what´s more, it enables to obtain wood from the fields. The main centre of interest for all the region animal species living in the area is definitely the holm oak. It is on the oak tops, on their branches or even inside their leaky trunks where over 50 different bird species hide their nests. The acorns, their fruits, serve as nourishment for a vast campus of herbivores, from the gallant deer to the little dormouse, as well as for the wintering range of pigeons and cranes. The affluence of game species like turtledoves, pigeons, partridges, rabbits, hares. etc delight hunters and reserve owners.
