Students will need a quite stable foundation on grammar and reading/composition considering that Business Spanish provides students with technical vocabulary and communicative skills covering business concepts as they apply to the corporate dynamics of the Spanish-speaking world, with a special emphasis on Latin America. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to engage students in a Spanish business environment and communicate effectively in real life situations. This course focuses on current economic, political and crosscultural issues relevant to conducting business in the Spanish-speaking world since business negotiations, styles and strategies differ from one culture to another. It emphasizes on domestic and international marketing practices, market segmentation, advertising, export/import, financing, retail/wholesale, entry into international markets, and on cultural aspects in Spain and Latin America that affect domestic and international trade. This class will introduce realistic situations and specialized vocabulary that business and finance professionals need to use with Hispanic members of the community in the course of their daily work and will also teach the students the cultural background that they will use in the business field and how to conduct business with Spanish-speaking countries. Spanish language news media, video and Internet resources will help us to stay informed about contemporary development in the business scenes of the Spanishspeaking countries and Europe. Language skills practice will include writing, interviewing, debating and negotiating. The course will be conducted in Spanish. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. To give students a solid foundation in business vocabulary through exercises with a communicative approach and the practice of business terminology. 2. To familiarize students with basic business concepts presented by an overview of commerce in a global economy and by the discussion of the establishment of a business firm and its subsequent development. 3. To integrate student’s knowledge of business with the geographic contexts of the Spanishspeaking countries. 4. To integrate the above-mentioned business and geographic contexts with the cultural context that deals with the social and business-related cultural patterns of the Hispanic world.
